😒 Riiiiiiiiiight! 🙋🏿‍♀️ 60 here & weird seeing kids react to Concerts I saw in NY/NJ, mostly at MSG. 🤭 I couldn't go to all the MSG Zep shows I see everyone react to until HS. Then I used Bday, Xmas & Babysitting Money to buy my first nosebleed section tickets. 😳😒 Then I had to see EVERYBODY that played MSG, Radio City, The Coliseum, Giant Stadium. 😉 Retired early, so now I can spend money on Comic Con Tickets instead of Monthly MetroCards to get to work 5 days a week. 🤗 And it's GLORIOUS! 🥰🐰

If this gave you goosebumps you should definitely listen to the original studioversion from "Dark Side of the Moon" with Claire Torry. "Time" floats directly into "The Great Gig...". It's about submitting to death, and Claire sings tears out of my eyes each and every time... through the last 49 years.

When Richard Wright, the keyboardist, died in 2008, it was this song that was sung at his funeral by Durga Mc Broom, one if theBackgroundsinger ofthePinkFloydWorld Tour. This was his express wish during his lifetime. The rumor persists that none other than Jon Lord accompanied on the piano.

This is meant to portray in raw emotion the transitions into leaving life, the stages of dying, starting with denial, anger, fear, resistance then finally acceptance, it is amazing and makes me tear up everytime I listen to it, I'm glad you were able to listen to a Master piece, the Pink Floyd rabbit hole keeps getting deeper my friend, Enjoy !! God Bless.

This version of this song makes me WEEP every time I hear it. The first singer's name is Sam Brown, she had a massive worldwide hit of her own in the late 80s called 'Stop', which is quite superb. Check it out. Also do the finale to that concert, 'Run Like Hell', if you haven't already. It will blow your mind.

Sam brown (blonde) did a pretty good job considering she's a ukulele playing folk singer.
I was at this very concert and the girl next to me collapsed from emotion during this song.
I was 45 at the time and in floods of tears throughout this gig, but this one destroyed me.
It took me 3 days recover and I re-live it every time I watch it.
    A truly life changing experience.

I was there on that tour. Stood in line (first in line) at 3:00 AM at the door at the mall for the TicketMaster outlet. Got up and got the 7th row dead center. Actually got tickets for both nights, there were 2 shows that week. Both were amazing but glad I got tickets as one of the shows was a very rare show where they played the entire Dark Side of The Moon album in one show. Both nights were spiritual experiences. I have seen some of the greatest bands on the planet. Floyd.....they are and always have been in a league of their own.

Sam Brown is Joe Browns daughter Joe is a mich respected musician nicknamed the chirpy cockney. He had hits in the late 50s and well into the 60s with his band called the bruvvers. He also appeared in films and on stage. Her mother was also a prolific singing artist so she has quite a musical background.

I first heard this 50 years ago, and because it was so different and had no lyrics, I was not impressed. What an a*hole! Now that I understand its genesis and meaning, it has become one of my most treasured PF songs. Whether the studio version or the Pulse version, the production values are outstanding. I love when Wright and Gilmour exchange smiles of joy, I always like it when performers reveal what a good time they are having. Glad you were gob-smacked.

One thing you have to consider when you pick a favorite voice is that the first singer got the violent/denial portion of the song, so the position dictated that kind of performance. The other two were different and more subdued and reflective with the last once fading away.

The moment you mentioned, when Sam Brown (blonde singer) stepped back, looked at David and seemed to wind up, and then cut loose with that growl, has a little story behind it. In rehearsals, David really wanted her to go for it, but she was afraid of blowing out her voice (this was at the end of a long tour), so he played her a little and said something like, I know you won't go for it, you'll pull back. His little psychological manipulation worked - when she's looking at David and winding up, she's thinking about what he said and was like, oh yeah, listen to this! Magnificent singers, all three. Sam is still around, but her vocal chords were damaged (later, not with Pink Floyd). Durga (2nd singer) is still around. Claudia died in 2018 - RIP.

Fantastic reaction, bro! Most people will say they prefer the original but this version is hand down the best, imo. I'm in agreement that all three are phenomenal but Sam Brown (the first girl) is just that one step above. If you want to hear the greatest female singer of all time, listen Ann Wilson, the singer for the rock band Heart. Notable tracks to start with are Barracuda, Magic Man, Crazy On You, Alone, Wild Child, and Dreamboat Annie. But that just scratches the surface. They're fantastic live as well, try anything from their Alive In Seattle DVD from 2003. It's all on YT. Their version of Battle Of Evermore from that show will give you goosebumps.

Richard Wright wrote the music and he wrote it based on certain chords he likes from Miles Davis who was one of Richard's rights main influencers. Kind of surprised you couldn't find the studio version because it's one of the main songs on Dark Side of the Moon right after the song "Time"! A young girl named Clare Torry who was a session singer at the time improvised this whole song to Richard Wright's chords! Since she improvised most of the music she got a writing credit later on after a lawsuit that was not a angry or disputed lawsuit she just got her name in there as a co-writer! Listen for yourself to the version on Dark Side of The Moon and you probably better be sitting down when you do!!
Also in the movie School of Rock with Jack Black he tells a young girl to listen to Great Gig in the sky for inspiration in the movie!

I read that Clare was improvising vocal sounds while being shown cue cards through the control room glass by a member of the band (probably Rodger Waters) with emotion words on them "Anger", "Grief", "Sadness" ... etc. Believe it was only 2 takes and they used the first one, but both were equally great. All done in a single short studio session and she didn't think it was going to appear on the album until hearing it playing in a music store or somewhere

Saw her/them do this on this tour at Earls Court in 1994. She was rumored as having a relationship with Gilmour at the time before he met Polly, had a few good hits in the UK, and her dad was 60’s rocker Joe Brown. It’s a slide guitar yes, and the original was sung by Clare Torry, who also sang the theme tune to UK 70’s hit sitcom Butterflies. Sam Brown’s version is good but nothing on 1. The original, and 2. The version from 1988-9. Listen to the spoken words. “And I am not frightened of dying…” etc.❤❤
PLEASE please do Close to the Edge by Yes ❤❤ Don’t be put off by the chaotic start - it’s meant to be like that. Hold on to that hat: it’s among the best music ever created ❤🎉

Have a go at Gary Moore, try Still Got The Blues live of course or one of his instrumentals, The Loner Live.

IMO the best version is the one in Delicate Sound of Thunder. Rachel Fury was something appart. And David agrees

As with almost all Pink Floyd music, the best version of this particular song is the studio version.

By the way, google how this track was recorded - if only tribute to the original singer - amazing in its own right.

Great show but nothing seems to be better to me than the original with Claire Tory.

If you have nothing else to do, react to Phil Collins-In the Air Tonight. Has to be live!

Just started watching you. And yeah, goosebumps. If you love strong, emotive singing like this, may I respectfully suggest you watch the Beth Hart and Joe Bonamassa collaboration ……live in Amsterdam. Song- I’d Rather Go Blind. Talk about being gobsmacked.

It takes three of them in concert to do what Clare Torry did on the original, which is so much better.
