you were too hard on this episode . I think this kinds of episodes is what made Trek really interesting . especially the first time you watch it and don't know what's going on and it creates mystery and tension and curiosity . I wish the new trek shows did something like this
Agreed! One of my favorite TNG episodes, it's from the dreaded "early seasons" and yet it's still awesome! People don't know what they're missing when they skip season 2 entirely...
O’Brien easily could’ve called the bridge from the transporter room to tell Picard that Riker and Worf were back, but he was too busy thinking about killing Cardassians.
It's possible Riker was looking at the screen, then looked at Picard when Nagilum said Picard? And his "Yes absolutely I do indeed concur wholeheartedly" is great.
I like the take on this one. I like how I can feel as though i'm watching these episodes for the first time again even though I've been watching 'em my whole life. gets a B- from me
Btw there is a pretty big continuity error in this episode. When the Enterprise is investigating the hole in space, Data says that there has been no such occurrence ever happening before. Well, I’m the TOS episode “The Immunity Syndrome”, the Enterprise encounters the exact same thing. It is even described as “ A hole in space”. Pretty big mess right there.
i know this is very late but i always loved this episode, the creepy tone was really good and the tention was great i can see why people would think its boring. yes the opener was shitty, also i thought the design of nagilum actually is good and makes sence in this context id give this episode a B-.
I respect your opinion. But I always liked this one, it gives me the kind of halloween/pants-shitting vibe. Although, not to the level of "Genesis", Spider-Barclay still takes the cake on that one.
although, it is worth noting that this episode is better at night, because it captures the spooky/eerie vibe far better, everything feels really well put together if you have that eerie/spooky vibe, so this one gets an A from me
I gotta wonder why Q didn't show up and be like "hey, I'm the most powerful omnipotent being that plays games with the Enterprise!". ....unless this squashed faced being was actually more powerful than Q, then Q wouldn't dare to show up. hmm.....
3:00 I am disturbed by the notion that because pulaski is in a scientific field that she shouldn't have issue with accepting data is alive. By extension, that if someone is a scientist, they should have the same opinion as all other scientists?!?! They disagree, within fields, especially with cutting edge research, there is disagreement.
lol, Wesley suddenly inexplicably gets replaced by some random guy. I had to rewind and watch and sure enough within a second he's replaced. and yeah, Riker not looking at the face is one thing that always bothered me. ya'll point out a lot of things that I never noticed (wesley being replaced) so glad you didn't ignore this. why wasn't he looking at the screen. what was he looking at? so dumb
Fun Fact: The remastered version has altered Nagilum's appearance so it looks like a truly alien face, instead of a cutout with a human mouth clearly speaking through the hole. Go find any video on here that predates the remastered version and you'll quickly see what I mean. Nagilum's eyes were altered as well.
Honestly Pulaski gave me those "caring but stern" mother vibes So i cant "hate" her But yeah, parts of her personality i font like, and thats pair for the course on humanity
Weird how this Halloween-ish episode sticks with me, along with the crusher episode when she's holding onto furniture being sucked into a vortex. There's a good tone that's kinda scary
Wesley disappeared because he had to go potty and in 1988 they still didn't show toilets in the Brady house so they wouldn't mention it in tng either. Thankfully Wes didn't have drainage problems or else there'd be a spot on his light gray outfit. That's the real reason everyone else wears black pants.
One of the few good (or at least enjoyable) episodes of season 2, in my opinion. Still infinitely better than the likes of Naked Now and Code of Honor. The sense of mystery and dread that the void (and later Nagilum) invokes are almost Lovecraftian.
For some reason I actually enjoy this episode. Simple rule of thump for TNG and Voyager that if you have never been seen and show up on the bridge or an away mission.you are DEAD. Your analysis best psrt
Lets see here Wesley is sitting there, ads comes on, Haskell is now there, Haskell is killed, Wesley has returned (after more ads?), not affected that Haskell was murdered at "his" bridge station, just minutes ago (PTSD)?
If they can SEE it, it is emitting light. We have had sensors that can detect light since the 19th century, they would be able to get some reading on it even if it is totally passive.
The commentary about pulaski seems to miss the fact that data is utterly unique and there is nothing in the federation like him, except maybe Lore. Pulaski has never dealt with anything luke data before, and she's skeptical that he's really intellegent because he's the only being of his kind.
Your current options are: Live as a prisoner, and randomly be selected for death, in horrifying ways Or, kill yourself. Taking the choice away from a higher life form Im with Picard, the higher life form might let you go when he realizes your determination to be free, or you pick your end. Im game ether way
I think D+ is waaaay too harsh. Yes, Nagilium is tropey and the episode is a big mind game. But Ron Jones has the perfect score for this episode. Indeed, Ron Jones’ composing is a major saving grace for a lot of Season 1 and Season 2 of TNG. (I’m unpleasantly surprised to hear absolutely no discussion of score or soundtrack in any of your reviews so far. Star Trek is quite renown for its music. But we’ll put that aside for now.) Picard has an interesting arc in this episode. He is genuinely curious as an explorer about the void up to the point when, as Ron Jones’ score puts it, they are going nowhere. Data plays and compliments that beautifully. More to the point, Data’s childlike wonderment is effective here-right through when Nagilium impersonates Data. Riker plays a contrast as a straight man/concerned for the ship. And Worf plays off of that, like how Data plays off of Picard. But Worf’s Klingon side shines here-Klingon befuddlement easily devolves into frustration. Dr. Pulaski and Counselor Troi don’t have as much in this ep, but, they have some solid hits in Act 4. And everybody except for Data eventually hits the same wave length by Act 4. The episode takes a good and fascinating turn when Nagilium kills Haskell. It’s no longer a mind game. It’s a true threat. Picard very promptly moves back from curious explorer into full blown Starfleet Captain mode. “I will not stand by while half my crew is slaughtered….[I would rather….]Destroy the Enterprise.” That is almost a perfect parrot of “11001001”: “This vessel must not fall into hostile hands.” And so we get three beautifully scored ending scenes of Picard and Riker carrying that out, Picard waxing philosophically on what’s to come, and then, Picard finally outmaneuvering Nagilium. Ron Jones’ score really hits paydirt in that last tense minute. Right until Picard says, “Abort auto-destruct sequence” you think he really will indeed purposely destroy the Enterprise. At least, I do. (“Auto-destruct” is not a trope in my book.) I urge you, respectfully, to reconsider and reassess with Ron Jones’ score. D+ is too harsh.
If Picard just listenes to Worf more, the Enterprise would have been so much more safe.

yeah i remember it being one of the first interesting ones. like a very early draft of cause and effect
Wesley sits in the chair that Haskell was in. “Wow the chairs still moist.”
You can't just give redshirts names. Once they have names, you'll develop feelings for them.
Geordi and Worf: "Mauve it is!"
And Tasha is crying
Gold shirt, bitch slapped to death. As security officer
F in chat 😂🤦♂️
Its just rank. If they have a name, they are dressed as their alien species would be, or, they are top brass and don't die, but reoccur.
Lt. Leslie died several times in the Original Series.
O’Brien easily could’ve called the bridge from the transporter room to tell Picard that Riker and Worf were back, but he was too busy thinking about killing Cardassians.
The bloody Cardies can't be trusted! 🤣
It's possible Riker was looking at the screen, then looked at Picard when Nagilum said Picard?
And his "Yes absolutely I do indeed concur wholeheartedly" is great.
Worf : One Riker one bridge !
Isn't Nagillum mulligan backwards?
MtG. I noticed that.
When you stack the deck you have a Nagilliun 😂😂🤷♂️
I like the take on this one. I like how I can feel as though i'm watching these episodes for the first time again even though I've been watching 'em my whole life. gets a B- from me

no, it's a giant cell.
BUt i did think of that watching the Episode. the German name even is "The Hole in Space"

and despite my disagreement, I am not one of the two people that disliked this video, as I like seeing another person’s viewpoint
Ah yes, genesis. Or what it was also called: "we will never talk about the people worf ate."
It's definitely style over substance, but for all the chills and thrills, it does feel too basic at times. C+/B- for me.
Head Canon: Q got wind of what Nagilum was doing to the Enterprise crew and forced him to let them go.
Do you think they styled the miner aliens from Galaxy Quest on Ngelem?
Interesting idea, I can see the similarity.
I gotta wonder why Q didn't show up and be like "hey, I'm the most powerful omnipotent being that plays games with the Enterprise!".
....unless this squashed faced being was actually more powerful than Q, then Q wouldn't dare to show up. hmm.....
Q is not omnipotent cosmically powerfully but not omnipotent.
The actor played the dying man excellently though.
I always wanted to know exactly what Nagilum did to Haskell.
He chokes him
Probably saw cosmic morbid horror. Immaterial becoming immaterial something like that

Good catch! I never noticed Worf speaking Klingon in that scene.
I aways found it funny and set the tone
This is the serious guy, so scared he is reverting to his basic speech for quick delivery of emotion 😂😂👌
lol, Wesley suddenly inexplicably gets replaced by some random guy. I had to rewind and watch and sure enough within a second he's replaced.

They even gave Haskell a red shirt.

Am I the only one who really, REALLY dislikes Pulaski? She just gives off angry old lady vibes and is just plain uninteresting...
Honestly Pulaski gave me those "caring but stern" mother vibes
So i cant "hate" her
But yeah, parts of her personality i font like, and thats pair for the course on humanity
You're overlooking the very important difference between having the meeting on the bridge vs in the meeting room: they get to sit down. 😆
Weird how this Halloween-ish episode sticks with me, along with the crusher episode when she's holding onto furniture being sucked into a vortex. There's a good tone that's kinda scary
2:18
The most Millennial statement yet! 🤦🏼♂️
TNG: "Where Silence Has Lease." The episode that visualizes "warped spacetime" (esp when Riker & Worf are exploring the duplicate Enterprise).
Haskel’s overacted death reminds me of OJ from the Naked Gun movies
Rough D+ rating. Personally I love this episode as far as character building and the overwhelming conflict with a character hard to anticipate.
Yellow alert might have kept all the children that are on the ship safe from harm.

0:59 video artifact, massive.
Data says .. The beginning of wisdom are the words ' I do not know'.. greatest line in the series 😊
1:34 ummmm think again. Realistically, that is ENTIRELY believable.
If they can SEE it, it is emitting light. We have had sensors that can detect light since the 19th century, they would be able to get some reading on it even if it is totally passive.
Love the updated opener
Thanks. One of my favorite parts of making these is finding the goofiest parts of the season for the openings.
Who would win in a fight between Q, Nagilum, and Kevin Uxbridge?
Q.
Q.
Going to the yamata was really weird
I disagree with almost all of these!
But i keep watching.
The commentary about pulaski seems to miss the fact that data is utterly unique and there is nothing in the federation like him, except maybe Lore. Pulaski has never dealt with anything luke data before, and she's skeptical that he's really intellegent because he's the only being of his kind.
What about the rest of the crew?
Didn't they have a choice about being blown up as well?
Your current options are:

Im with Picard, the higher life form might let you go when he realizes your determination to be free, or you pick your end. Im game ether way
I like watching these like they are acadamy training videos on what to do or not do that requires an instructor to point out which is which 😅

They've mentioned the score several times for previous episodes and they confirmed that they don't like any of it.
Poor Worf
RIP hascle
Ah yes. The black face in space episode. 😂
I don't understand why they had Data ask what death is? In season 2? That's such bad writing.
AKA; the Giant Emoji episode. Oh Ensign Haskell you didn't leave soon us soon enough! A D+ episode. Agreed.
Their job is to investigate
Join Starfleet. You could get killed by Nagilum.
So you make an outer limits reference but never tell about how wesley got tricked by t-1000 to blow up earth? How lame.
#warfwasrightallalong
Gymnopedie 1, very nice
Nagilum!
Completely agree. This is one of the worst in s02.
I’m just built different
I don't think Haskell's? death is funny.
What letter of the Alphabet do I give this one? Besides a piss poor story the acting felt like a B. It is a generic C for me.
You liked episode 3 season 1 didnt you 😂😂
Callin this "bad" wile you probably think cringe is what the show is about
@@donovanulrich348 Poor writing on UA-cam is contagious. Long running shows are mixed bags.
