Although it really was nice to play as rean who starts off 17... watch his growth from student to teacher and by the end of reverie is either 20 or 21. Same can be for estelle and Joshua.. but I hear you... Its refreshing to have a adult main character from the start.
After binging Trails first 10 games (Feb-Aug 2023), I'm almost dreading a 1-and-done experience. I'm almost tempted to wait 2+ more years to be able to at least experience the entire Daybreak (Kuro/Kai) trilogy to its climax and arc conclusion in a continuous run, like I did in my initial binge for Sky & Crossbell/CS/Reverie. Also Reverie had non-teen protagonists, both Rean and Lloyd were 20 by then, and 'C' was 29.
I've been a Final Fantasy boy at heart since playing II(IV) on the SNES. But the Trails games have quickly become #2 for me and every new game announcement make me giddy! I can't wait to dive into Daybreak this weekend!
Arts take a bit to get going but get very strong once you are set up. You need the boost of the matching element + ark/judgement feather. More relevant to harder bosses and difficulties but just as viable as craft/scraft spam.
Less than a year ago I didn't even know what the Trails series was and I was only vaguely aware that some games called Trails of Cold Steel existed and had serveral sequels and I honestly thought they were part of the same franchise as those Tales Of INSERT games I also don't know anything about. Then I saw some video here on youtube talking about how underrated the series was and I saw the Sky trilogy on sale on Steam, so I bought Trails In The Sky to try it out. I liked it so much while playing it that after just a couple of days and before the sale ended I bought Trails In The Sky Second Chapter and Trails In The Sky The Third and put all the rest of the series on my wishlist to track them for discounts over the following months. I just finished Trails Through Daybreak last week and I have to say it was an amazing ride. I feel as attached to these characters and this world as I feel after reading a dozen novels in the same series or watching several seasons of the same show. It's an amazing feat of storytelling in video game format that I don't think I've ever seen anywhere else. I don't know why these games are not better known in the west. I keep telling all my friends who like video games to try them out and they just brush me off despite the fact that if someone told me "It's Final Fantasy but every sequel is part of the same story" it would've been enough to pique my interest. More people should play these amazing games.
Finished Trails into Reverie Main story a few days ago. Still playing and hope to finish the post game content before my Trails through Daybreak copy arrives!
I completed Cold Steel IV earlier this year. I will never forget "hearing" Towa's silent scream in that game. :( I'm on the finale of Reverie right now. Soon I will be playing Daybreak! WOOOOO!!! Go Trails!
Thank you for the positive review. I've played all Trails titles released domestically beginning with "Trails from Zero." I'm currently enjoying "Trails into Reverie." "Daybreak" is on order, although I don't know when I'll be able to begin that adventure. I'm obviously a fan of the series. My only observation (not a criticism, really) is that I would welcome an option to establish and to nurture at least one blatantly romantic connection between primary male characters. I won't hold my breath, but I still want what I want.
I'll have a look later. I'm playing DQ III on the Super Famicom in Japanese. 1) My routine Japanese practice 2) First time playing! Wanna finish before the remake. Will need to start Trails later Nice review, Davey!
Good to see that by searching "Trails Through Daybreak Review" the first result I see is you. Thank you once again David, my order has been placed :) have a lovely day!
Sky Trilogy is also readily available on Steam in english, as are Zero/Azure, the Cold Steel Games and Reverie. I dont see any single reason to start with Kuro.
if you haven't noticed every time an arc begins the reviewers all say its a good place to start. it's prob marketing bs. it's a narrative focused series so starting anywhere besides sky fc is pretty dumb.
As much as I would want to get started with this series already, I think I'll wait for the Sky Trilogy remaster to release. I'm the kinda guy who likes knowing the whole story firsthand. Also, I think TLoH series is an overall great series handled with care from Falcom. They really putting in the work bringing this series to the West and have done a fine job in doing so. Lastly, congrats on the 80,000 subs David, you'll make it 100k before you know it.
That's a fair reasoning to wait, just know that the sky trilogy remaster will surely start with only Sky FC and then you'll surely have to wait to have Sky SC remastered and sky the third remastered.
@@Shazam1998 Mainly because it's old and looks old, some people have a hard time going back to a game with worst graphic even if the graphic aren't bad at all. Yeah it's perfectly playable but a remaster wouldn't hurt, especially to try to find out a way to speed up a bit the start of Sky FC without removing it's charm, the start of that game is slow for someone who isn't involved yet in the serie.

Final Fantasy Dragon Quest Tales and Trails David we need to make a vidoe game with this Title or a T-Shirt much love and respect Mr RPG what a life of gaming we’ve seen from 1980-Now
Iv really loved playing the Trails games and Reviere was a great fitting end to the Rean storyline. I played the Demo for this and Im already liking the characters. Cant wait for July 5th. Thank you David for a great review. 🤗
I dropped all my gacha games because of this game. I like Rean but Van is way better, especially him being an adult too. I am halfway through the game and I love it. I can't wait to know the characters more especially Van and Elaine. Their backstory intrigued me
I wished they let you drive the car considering how obsessed Van is with his car. At first i thought he was gonna get the kevin 11 treatment with his car.
Van's definitely my second favorite character after Rean now, I mean it's still a lot of spoilers especially for the Cold Steel and Reverie Arcs gvien it happens only a few years after but as an ice breaker it's pretty good about being self-contained as all first entries in the Trails Series should.
Great review David, I've seen a friend play through all the Trails games, and it looks like such an EPIC franchise/series. I've also entered into a contest to win a copy of this, so hope to win one and get to experience this game/series for the first time personally. Great to watch and check out, but def not the same as playing it yourself. Thank you for yet another great video, and looking forward to the next one. Hope all is well and you have a wonderful day.
I did play the demo on switch, eventually may try the PS4 version on PS5 but I did enjoyed what I played and want to get it. Even tho I still have the Sky FC game on PC I kinda wanna try Daybreak as a one-off to eventually get through with the series one of these days. The combat interested me as it was the start to the swapping action and turn-based combat which I thought was cool as hell, so I do wanna pick this game up, especially with it actually coming out on my birthday too which is rare for me.
Happy early birthday! I'm of the (unpopular) opinion that the greatest strength of Trails as a series is actually its combat mechanics, so I do strongly recommend starting with a more modern entry such as Cold Steel 1 or Daybreak if that is what interests you. That is not to say that the series doesn't also do other things well, of course.
@@BlueGrovyleI have yet to play Sky (as I don't game on PC) so I started with Trails of Cold Steel 1 and played through all 4 of them. I didn't catch every reference but I was able to follow along. I then played Zero/Azure before playing Reverie so it's definitely not absolutely necessary to start with Sky.
@@drewtheunspoken3988 agreed. I started with Cold Steel 1 myself and then went back to the beginning of the series. In my opinion, starting with Sky is only the "objective" correct answer if you're already committed to playing all the games, which most prospective fans never will.
Sky is the best arc in the series for me so you're in for a treat when you do get around to it, perhaps when the remaster/remake arrives. I played them on the vita/pstv and although I think they aren't absolutely necessary as a starting point you would miss a hell of a lot of story building, don't listen when people say sky the 3rd is skipable also, it's definitely not and a great game.
Hey David, just wanted to say thank you for getting me into the YS series. I’m loving it so far if I were to try trails where should I start? Have a blessed day.
No one is better than Rean. Waiting impatiently for Daybreak to arrive in the mail, however I am not a fan of the new battle system. Thanks for another awesome informative video.
I already played through the Japanese version some time ago, but I got the Nisa CE version as well which arrived just yesterday. This is probably one of the best Trails games. I think best starting point is Sky, but for new players that just want to try this series, this one is probably the best option. It's the start of a new arc, so the main characters are new regardless of the previous titles, and more importantly, there is a very long demo for this game. That along will probably get more new players than anything else. The combat timeline is an issue. There is a key (can't remember which) that shows numbers on the combat timeline. Anyway, thankfully, this is fixed on Daybreak 2.
ooh man might have to pick up a physical of this one. Might wait for it to go on sale a little bit though. So many good RPGs this year! Love to see it.
I think with Cold Steel 4 that the series has lost any and all... Plot? Interest? With how it ends and how it just continually power scales things, I find it incredibly difficult to care any more since there's always going to be some anime godlike powerup to save the day so I can't feel any actual real threats any more. I don't trust the current team of writers to not just fall onto the same old same old tropes like with the current trends started from Cold steel onwards. The fact that you advertise the MC is "Totally a badass but he has a softer side like when talking about food" kinda says it all for me. The writers really love having these groups of people just... suddenly all talk about food as if that's a conversation I want to hear when I'm fighting a goddamn war (Cold steel anyway). There's a gluttonous part of me that still wants to play this game just to see how far this team has fallen, but there's another part of me that just doesn't want to care...
I'm really on the fence about this one. I've played every game in the series so far, but I've really felt the writing and story have been going downhill in the last few titles. I had to force myself through reverie and while I really like the idea of a fresh new cast and definitely relate to not playing as a kid, I can't help but have doubts about shallow one dimensional, predictable villains. Maybe I'll pick it up on a sale.
The differences in opinion on this game are wild. One UA-camr called it game of the year lol. I'll get it because I'm invested in the series, but another person said it takes a step back, guess it's up to whoever plays it
It's a good game but it can certainly be divisive. Something David didn't mention is that if you liked being able to steal battle bonuses like Zero EP costs and stuff, this new battle system makes it borderline impossible to do that. Because the only way to do it is to break the enemy on the turn they're going to receive it. You can't S Craft it away from them like previous games. This was an irritating change to me, personally, because now when they have a crit coming up you basically just have to eat it most of the time. I feel that stealing bonuses like that was part of what made Trails combat fun and unique but maybe other people have different opinions about it
I absolutely cracked up when you said the main character was in his 20s so he's an old man lol Japan seems to be ageist as F lol They make anyone above 25 get made fun of for being old it's like, holy crap you really aren't OLD until you are in your 60s ffs.
It's because they (mostly Aaron) are CONSTANTLY shitting on Van about it, to the point that it gets annoying, honestly. I still love Aaron though, he's a great character. But man do they beat those old man jokes to death from beginning to end.
Worst entry in the series for me, combat has been dumbed down far too much to the point where nothing matters, no strategic timings of s-breaks, quarts combos don't matter, slot in whatever arts you want as long you got healing in there and you're good, etc etc. and yeah basing all of this off of Nightmare difficulty. Probly just gonna rely on a let's play or something for the story bits as i dropped it in chapter 3 and the thought of returing to it puts me to sleep instantly. Rather spend 8 hours grinding for Sky SC Prologue on Nightmare then touch this again
Great Gaming Channel ...but I've had the game pre-ordered for several months & after watching the video, it really looks lame to me, so I'm gonna cancel it. 🙂
I feel the 2D faces in dialogue was better in Sky and Zero than 3D. Also, I really blew through Daybreak gameplay wise so it wasn't fun. The story wasn't that interesting either, and I wish Calvard was eastern styled. The more this series continues, the less I like it and only like Sky and Zero
The trails games are not for me. The overly "passionate" fan base and the mediocre storyline. Doesn't do it for me but I'm more then happy for the fans of the series that it's still going on.
So a new Trails game in 2024 and it still looks like a PS3 launch title. They flatly refuse to update their graphics engine. This is why all the games since Trails of Cold Steel 1 look exactly the same. Lazy, cheap and inexcusable and you can talk all you want about it being gameplay that matters Falcom have been using this same engine for all their games forever, including Ys which also looks 20 years out of date. Ambitious storytelling and character development locked in an ancient graphics engine basically sums up every one of their games. Shame really. Flame retardant armour now in place for incoming hate storm from Falcom fanboy army.
This is the new engine, and It looks way better that the ole One, the Phyreengine that powered Cold Steel 1-4 and Reverie. You dont have eyes in your face, so dont try to give technical lessins please.

I feel that stealing bonuses like that was part of what made Trails combat fun and unique but maybe other people have different opinions about it
@@saintfayde4438 yeah I watch Rozalins video about it, he mentioned that. He also said it's a very easy game, I might get it if it goes on sale
Games are great, but people really need to tone down on the teenagers main characters. We really need some adult for f sake
I STILL beat the full game 100% optional quests import version on VERY EASY/EASY mode in ONLY 20 HOURS.
Great game with terrible action combat element and downgraded UI in comparison to CS or Reverie.
In JRPG world hes 24 years old but he mite as well be in a nursing home. 😅🤣
Sounds like trails series just got a whole lot better
Great Gaming Channel ...but I've had the game pre-ordered for several months & after watching the video, it really looks lame to me, so I'm gonna cancel it. 🙂
I feel the 2D faces in dialogue was better in Sky and Zero than 3D. Also, I really blew through Daybreak gameplay wise so it wasn't fun. The story wasn't that interesting either, and I wish Calvard was eastern styled. The more this series continues, the less I like it and only like Sky and Zero
That's your preference I like all of them.
@@MrDiomedes1977 If it's a new engine it still looks shit, use the eyes 'in your face' dumbass. Oh and learn to spell.
Who is Ken and why am I jealous of him? 🫢
I gotta check this series out
You are right; you have to check it out.
