I am actually more excited they made the effort to do a new translation and new voice work rather than just reuse the old stuff. and I dont think having the option to use the old stuff VA is really feasible since its apparently going to be a new script. I adored working designs back in the day, but some of their dialogue choices definitely would not play well today. The old games still exist for that. I am looking forward to the remasters.
@taliefer16 I want at least some key VAs to come back such as Jennifer Stigile and John Truit. Their voices are kinda synonymous with Lunar as far as the Western Sphere is concerned.

I wish but that's not likely for both Lunar Legend and the PSP version none of the Working Designs actors showed up in either one of those Lunar games and that's because by the ttime Lunar Legend on the GBA was released Working Designs went broke and no longer exists. So its 100% likely John Truitt won't be voicing Ghaleon in both PS1 Lunar games FOR the 2025 remaster of IT.
Are you freaking kidding me?! There's no voice acting? Or not the original voice acting? I'm done...... That's what made the game special for me. Not buying if that's true. I even have the ghaleon punching puppet, and used to act out my ghaleons' favorite scenes. 😭 It will suck without working design content & voices. Glad I own silver Star story complete now I just have to buy eternal blue box set for like $5,000. I thought Victor Ireland died. I could have sworn I read that. No working design version = no buy from me.
The remake will likely use voice acting it in BUT NOT with any of the Working Designs PS1 actors for BOTH since not even Lunar legend GBA or the PSP version KEPT the PS1 actors for Lunar 1 intact at all and didn't use ANY of them.
Honestly, as someone in his early thirties who never played these, I’d love to have the original tracks just to see what people who DID grow up with these got. Also, that Disney number is too good, and I will be upset if they somehow ruin it

I got Lunar 1 on ps1, just a couple of months before the announcement of the remaster collection. Never played it before, and the voice acting is exactly what I was hoping for when starting! It's just got that 90s feel to it, and sound perfect. I honestly can't imagine playing it now with all new VA's.
I found out about Lunar from Gamer's Republic, and got curious enough to buy Silver Star Story.... and totally fell in love. I was pretty sad that it wasn't that popular here, so seeing so much love for the series makes me happy
While I'm certainly not at all a fan of Working Designs' localizations, and I am hoping we can finally get an authentic version of the games outside Japan, I do agree with MLiG that the old version should at least be an option (or maybe some free DLC somewhere down the line) for the people that DO want it. The remaster of Azure Striker Gunvolt actually did something like this. The original 3DS version has a pretty divisive localization, and they redid it from scratch (and much more accurately) for the rereleases, but it actually does have an option to play with the old localization as well
Ireland likely wanted a bundle. He overvalues himself and many who grew up with WD have likely soured on them, I know I have. Localization is being charitable too. For Silhouette Mirage he outright censored it with the demon storyline and everything. The one credit I will give them is the Playstation games they localized were filled with swag for a very reasonable price. A number of companies nowadays offering extras could take a hint. I think Xseed versions of games on the Switch and elsewhere of Trinity Trigger and others are the ONLY ones who have taken the hint. Atlus and others are now largely price gouging people with the CEs despite the exchange rate of Yen to the Dollar. It is REALLY fun for the Japanese game companies to treat Americans as cash machines to get as much USD out of them as they can instead of taking into the account the value of the exchange rate and pricing accordingly. Honestly the ONE company I will give credit for actually being accurate here is Nintendo, where the Japanese CE of Tears had a softcover artbook while the American one had a hardcover. In the opposite fashion Metaphor CE has a physical book for the Japanese market while the American has a digital that costs more. This is Atlus giving a slap in the face to American fans.
That is what worries me the most with these remakes/remasters. I don't want to see the localisation censored or butchered in anyway. Being respectful to the original creators is what I want to see, but sadly for me personally I don't think that will happen.
Damn, you know I never really thought about it but the voice acting may be the most impactful element of the PS1 releases. When I think of Lunar, the spoken dialog is always at the forefront. Hopefully it's at least decent, but at least these're also getting a graphical facelift.
I really think those of us who are old enough to remember what localizations were like (and how often they came out) before Working Designs are more likely to appreciate them. Some of my fondest memories are from playing games like Lunar and Dragon Force. They took some liberties with the translations, but most of the time they just added flavor that wooden, direct translations of the era didn't have. I really liked them. I'll be buying these of course, but it sounds like they're just putting these out there so those of us who want to play them can rather than putting any effort into them, much like the Grandia HD Remaster which I bought, started, and then went for the fan translation on my Saturn and my original Dreamcast copies of the games because they're so much better.
Yeah, I can't stand the hate WD gets. Without their work we would NEVER have gotten these games out West. They could've just translated the menus for all I care, teenage me just wanted more JRPG goodness.
@@acerimmer8338 Same boat! People need to understand that this was pretty much the figurative 'Wild West' of the localization timeline. If not for companies like Working Designs, yeah... we wouldn't have *most* of these now beloved franchises here when we did. If that industry hadn't started until, say... anime was taking off here, we'd have been at the tail end of PS1 era games, and these would have long since been skipped over. And there were much more egregious localizations, even at the time. Not just the weird translations like the infamously hilarious "All your base are belong to us", but also some companies that either accidentally, or deliberately took it upon themselves to make games harder (like 7th Saga not having proper character scaling in the latter half, so monsters outpace you at what feels like astronomical rates). Were jokey references like Nall being mistaken for the Tootsie Pop owl kinda cringe? Sure. But they were from NPCs off to the side that you didn't *need* to talk to. And the originals sometimes had no cultural relevance to westerners (not Lunar TSS/EB specifically).
Working Designs, everything included was all so incredible. And John Truitt is just so classic as Ghaleon. Ever since his first words of Luna just happening to step in on him playing his music, "Oh... it's... no bother..." Everything he wants just falling right into his lap, you feel it through and trough with John, just that little bit... And the translation was so lovingly re-crafted for the English. I admit, I regret so deeply the three of us kids being stupid kids and playing with all the collectibles and parts of the Lunar 1 and 2 Complete, and misplacing them all.... We had all the little standees with the characters' faces, we had the cloth map and the Lucia's pendant. Have no idea where it all is, now... but we still have the games, and I'm so glad I played it... Speaking of Growlanser, oh man, reminds me, I wish they could've kept the Satoshi Urushihara art for that newer version of Langrisser...

Accurate is not a word I would use to describe the PSP version. There are references to Harry Potter littered throughout Vane and the additional content added at the beginning completely undermines the entire premise of the game by having Ghaleon talk to the ghost of a dead god only he can see.
@@twilightiger Yeah... those choices were *dumb.* Even for sake of cultural references... The books in Vane are all just about magic and world lore in general. Mistaking Nall for the Tootsie Pop owl was less egregious in the original Sega CD version! (the original line shows the guy to just be a forgetful adventurer. But they're a person of zero importance, saying stuff of nearly zero importance to the story or world lore. essentially 'free space'. still dumb, but not *that* dumb! xD )
Square Enix in recent years has set a certain standard for what I expect for modern RPG remasters. I just really want this remaster collection to meet that standard.
I kind of figured that all the Working Designs elements would go by the wayside here, but it is still kind of disappointing not to at least have the original voice acting as an option. Sure, WD took a lot of liberties with their localizations and the "me" of today is not wild about that, but the "me" that grew up with these games has a lot of love and admiration for them, as well as the guys that took the time to bring the games to us. It's a really mixed bag, but I guess we'll have to see how things shape up in the next few months. I also got the Lunar games back when I was in high school, and I rocked Lucia's pendant as part of my daily attire. Of course, I was the only person at school that had one (and only my friends even knew what it was) and eventually it actually got me in trouble, as someone claimed it was "satanic"...and then I had to explain to the principal what Lunar was. 😅 Good times!

I'm 39 years old, and I played both of these at release and nearly annually since. While I'm thankful for all the work that Vic and his team did back then, game localization was in a very different place in the 90s. The localization and voice quality from the Working Designs era is very dated by today's standards, and while I have a lot of nostalgia for it, I don't think it's suitable quality for a game release these days. I'm with Gungho and the decision to try to bring modern localization and voice acting quality to two of my top 10 games if all time. The original will always exist, after all.
The original exists so long as hardware still works,the links to Emulation is still there or if the game is not delisted. Don't be naive. The Industry has ways to make your point moot.
24 years old and emulated silver star story a couple years ago on a whim and loved it. I pray they can get the original voice over. There was something "nostalgic" about it all even tho I had never played it before. Changing VAs in something like P3Re made sense because it was a total remake but if this is just a remaster, don't remake the script and voices in my opinion, especially if the owner of the rights is literally saying "here, take it, please!"
I think the fans actually need to let GungHo know they won't purchase the remaster without the original voice actor options. The Original Voice Actors MADE the game. When Sony released Lunar for the PSP way back when and didn't include the original voice actors in it, I got to the point where you meet Ghaleon for the first time and I was like Nope.. I'm out. I've since become gun-shy about purchasing any other remake of this game without first knowing the original voice acting is included.
Exactly what you said David- GIVE US THE OPTION. I'm excited to see what a new translation brings but would love the option to go back to WD's original for nostalgia's sake. (And cuz Ghaleon will always be John Truitt's voice!)

I was never a fan of the Working Designs localizations and dubbing so I'm fine with this, and will be playing this only with Japanese audio / English subs. It's still a shame that fans of that might not have that option, but for me it is a non-issue.
I hope they don't taint the Lunar games. As for Working Designs, from what I understand, they claimed bankruptcy BECAUSE of Sony, which is the 1st qualm I held against 'em. WD's last game was Growlanser Generations (PS2), & WD wanted to release the 2 games separately, but Sony said no & forced 'em to pack 'em together, forcing WD to lose out on a lot of ca$h. At least that's what I researched, as I love 'em & have just about every game they released here in the US.
CONTINUED: Oh yeah, the PSP game, Lunar Silver Star Harmony has a different translation than the WD one, which I doubt they'll use, but who knows as of yet? I just hope they get it right.
I figured they would just use the same translation that was used in the PSP ‘remake’ or the Lunar Silver Star Story Touch Port. I love the working designs translation though. If I don’t hear Mystere tell me I need a spanking I will be very upset.
I mean I suppose Working Designs is a bit infamous for their localization work and it would be interesting to see what a new one would bring to the table. But idk, that's the original one we got and it's the one people will be expecting when they buy this. Gung-ho ought to at least be open to including it as an option, but I wouldn't know if that's feasible or not.
a new translation would be the same but with modern pop culture jokes. that's what working designs did. also, there's no way they'd include the original translations. remasters usually only have an option for music and sometimes graphics if that at all
@Thatdeadpenguy I do agree that Working Designs unfortunately laid the ground work that plagues modern localization but unlike these days it is not done out of lazy malice. Richard Honeywood of Xenogears was also a GOAT in localization but even he made off color jokes such as the scene referencing Star Trek out of nowhere before a boss fight. Granted these old localizations had ZERO staff and resources put in an some cases had to be done in weeks time. These folks put modern localizers to shame.
They will also have to change/censor some of Jean's attacks in Eternal Blue the PS1 game called those 2 Moves Charm Kiss and Enchanted kiss both cause the charm status but these days the word kiss can't really BE used in video games anymore but they could just call the 2 skills as Charm/Enchanted DANCE instead.
Great video David! I actually emailed the media rep for Lunar Remastered at Gung-ho about this but haven’t heard back and don’t really expect to since I’m not a platform or outlet. I would even take this as DLC. As much as I’d prefer it on disc for the physical versions having higher quality of the WD performances available with outtakes for a small fee would be great.
Forgot to mention that in the podcast Vic said that GameArts already owns his text from the localization. That’s why the song can use the WD lyrics. They just do not own the performances.

I hope it's not because they don't want to give us English VA. I didn't even buy the Baten Kaitos collection because they didn't give us English VA in at least Origins. Origins stepped up the recording quality and they had Cat Taber (Mission Vao in KOTOR and Penelo in Final Fantasy XII) and Kym Hoy who would go on to voice Kasumi Goto in Mass Effect 2 and 3.
that's not a good enough excuse to skip it. that's why we don't get lots of remasters of lesser known games, because people don't buy for silly reasons

What I really need is a full on 3d remake, having it already on ps1 and PSP, I have no need desire to go backwards to another 2d version of the game. Give me something more open world and visually appealing like Tales of, Xenoblade, Trails, heck the Romancing Saga 2 is an example of a great remake in 3d.

I would be fine with the un-working designs rebalances, even some localization changes (I didn't like everything Working Designs did)... but I want the voices and music at the very least. *3#* As someone who bought Gungho's Grandia and Grandia 2 Remasters multiple times, I will obviously be buying this too. And complaining the whole time about the changes, while I complete them both. lol.
I'm open to whatever new voice work they will do. Can't say it is bad without hearing the final product first but the old voice acting they should include it as an option imo. This way people have options to pick what they prefer.
Man, this is worrisome. Both Lunar games are some of my all-time favorite games across all consoles. I have both games, the extra goodies, and the strategy guides. I was so hoping it would be faithful to the PS1 version. I was sorta skeptical though at the same time. The humor for one would be outdated as the jokes were around 90's culture. Like Kyle crossdressing could be considered offensive. Not to mention the scene with Lucia in the hot spring and the Bromides. I really hope they do take that offer up and make it at least an option. That way, both generations can enjoy them. Plus John Truitt is Ghaleon. John gave Ghaleon his uniqueness. Don't deprive this new generation of that. I'd love to see Lunar revived after the horrific DS game. This is a great way to reboot it.

I have never played the originals since I only started gaming in the 00s and have been playing catch up for nearly a quarter of a century. I actually want a new localization. I prefer new localizations when possible. It's the reason why I refuse to give SE any money for the FFVII-IX HD re-releases since it's the same damn script my old PS1 discs have. The only reason that I would even consider buying the potential FFIX remake would be for a new localization.
Thanks for the video David. As an owner of Lunar 1 & 2 on Sega Cd, Sega Saturn, and PS1, this just persuaded me not to pickup the new ones. I’ll go out and pickup a nice copy of the PSP one off ebay instead the day of. I know Victor Irelands passion. It can be seen throughout the interviews in working designs manuals and his interviews on extra discs. I won’t support a cash grab and something that doesn’t have that Working Designs extra. I will happily enjoy all the other versions I have. :)

I have every Lunar 1&2 U.S. and JP releases, and I understand your sentiments completely, but please support Lunar and buy it anyway. This is just business, and most IP owners will never shell out additional funds for unnecessary expenses.
Be prepared to be disappointed because the PSP version sucks. The battle system is different, the dialogue has all been changed, the characters and their motivations have been retconned and Crispin Freeman as Ghaleon is just . . . painful to listen to. Especially when he starts talking to the floating head of a dead god that only he can see. And the references to Harry Potter are just . . . why?

I was always curious about it due to the different look and a little bit of the prologue with the original four heroes but based off your assessment, I am going to stay away from that one then too and stick with my OGs from the 90s. Sorry. I can’t and won’t buy the remakes because all it does is show that I am ok with the changes when I am not and it’s particularly why the gaming industry is in the state it is in now with Microtransactions, unfinished games coming out with massive downloads to fix them down the road, piss poor storage for said downloads, and games not truly owned and on disc any longer. I cannot go along with it or it just supports and normalizes what I don’t like about the industry.
Look! I love Lunar & its sequal just like the next rpg lover! but we need to be thankful its even coming out out at all! And not "nitpick" the remasters to death! Over something like og VA. We need to show support by buying the game when its released. I think these nitpicks can be a little harsh!
This actually made me so depressed because it makes me miss actual handdrawn anime cutscenes in games. I remember playing PS1 RPGs and seeing the next voiced cutscene as a reward for progressing to the next part. In game model cutscenes can be nice and all, but a lot of the time it's limited to the Engine's animations and stuff which can look really stilted.. but having really detailed anime cutscenes for climactic moments of the story really enhanced the effect and it always gave me a dopamine rush when it cut to one of them when entering an area or speaking to someone specific.
This just confirms to me what I've long suspected about many of these remasters & remakes - they're low effort ways to repackage games & cash in on nostalgia. It's crazy how many of these supposed "remasters" run worse than the originals, despite being on significantly better hardware. Whether it's Tales of Symphonia or Star Wars Battlefront or Paper Mario TTYD, there's no excuse for these things. Then you have games like the Mario 3D All-Stars collection, Chrono Cross, FF8, Luigi's Mansion 2 HD, DK Country Returns HD, etc. that all look a bit better, but offer little else & are sold for full price (or more than the originals). I'll probably still get this game, but I'm about done supporting these types of projects.
I think we need to coordinate some sort of effort - think of the "Save Shenmue" crowd (despite what you may have thought of Shenmue 3) - they made their voices loud and heard, and got the game made. If we want the definitive Lunar remasters, we need to make sure Gung Ho knows we are loud and many! Let me know how I can help!
Okay, but I just re-watched the trailer for the remaster collection. It seems to fully English voice-acted, you even have characters talking during combat. From those few samples in the trailer the voice acting seems really good!
But Eternal Blue had 1 feature that's pure CRAP Originally using the Magic Exp system to SAVE the game and the more HOURS you have on the games TIMER + the higher Hero's EXP lv the MORE Magic exp it costs so you could either use that EXP for learning the new skills/spells in game or Save but possibly NOT BOTH at once.
@@veghesther3204 Yeah, that's the biggest issue with Sega CD Eternal Blue, and that was entirely due to it being added in by Working Designs. The OG Japanese Mega CD version of Eternal Blue didn't require Magic Exp for saving.
I miss working designs so much. I have all their ps1 and after games, and maybe half the saturn ones. I love their limited editions, their hardcover strategy guides... I wish they'd start a limited run tyoe thing. Bring back awesome snes/ps1 japan only games... I'd pay real money for their awesome quality.
I think a lot of people are attached to the WD translation because that's the only option there was. Personally I'm hoping for a better, more accurate version. Whether that will actually be the case, time will tell. I went back and compared the few voice clips from the Remastered trailer to the PS1 version. I don't have any emotional attachment to the old voices, but I didn't find the new ones worse, personally. Definitely different delivery from Jessica and Hiro, but I don't recall their characterization enough to really have a feeling one way or another. It's interesting that the few clips shown follow the same exact script as the old version. As for the songs, I'm not too worried yet. The song used in the trailer sounded good. The vocal performance was probably better, though it does sound more "produced," if that makes sense. Like singing it outside vs in the studio. Anyway, I'm cautiously optimistic so far. There is a reason some people refer to WD as "Wrecking" Designs, after all.
I'm not going to buy it if it doesn't have the work designs stuff as a an option. I can play any version of the game i like on an emulator and even if I couldn't the collection is too expensive if the people putting it out aren't interested in doing everything they can to deliver a quality product. The entire point of this remaster is to capitalize on nostalgia and if this is at all possible, it needs to happen, and if it's not possible, there's no reason to bother.
I was worried about this day 1 when they announced this. Then even moreso when they said they'd be redoing the VA. Thankfully i still have the originals, but i don't think this is gonna be the game we all remember.
@@Bit_Mingus I mean... there are 'other options' out there, if original hardware doesn't work or might be failing (though I *do* worry it may fail, one day. so far so good. and I'm currently LP'ing TSS! if I can shamelessly plug. xD ). Though I think the parts they used were actually better than most. Unlike the Gamecube, where the reader and spin motor both go to crap and it needs to 'warm up' before playing anything. Luckily the WII plays those games too! xD
@ I keep the sega cd games in collection plastic and I enjoy just taking them out to look at once in awhile! But for me, I don’t mind playing them on ps1 I have many of those systems an they’re cheap!
although i would love the actors to comeback for their English roles. I am willing to give new talent a chance as well. Wind Nocturn is a song that I loved growing up, and although I understand the lyrics are fairly different from the Japanese original, I would still love it to stay with the English translation version.
Wasn’t a fan of how WD made their localizations of games really grindy by reducing exp and money earned to a degree that made the games less fun than the Japanese originals. Also some text dialogue choices were less than ideal. But that said the original English voices should be an option available for people who want it.
Fortunately I think the game balance of this version will be better so you dont have to grind. The PS1 North American Lunar is one of the few RPGS you literally have no choice but to sit there grinding enemies to be high enough level to pass many bosses
At least you *could* still earn money and Exp at a decent rate. And HP/MP shrines were dotted about fairly well enough you could get into a higher grinding area with not much trouble ...unlike the later half of 7th Saga, where enemies just turn into an iron wall. All because someone dumped part of the code that handled character growth when leveling to like 1-3 points for all stats but HP or some stupid low amount (been a few years since my last play), while monsters were nearly 7-10 per each level.
I know many hate it but I always liked working designs translations. I enjoyed the cultural references and didn't mind the difficulty (I had no idea they made them harder until seeing people recently complain online)

Personally I’m just excited to have a way to play these older games from when I was a kid that isn’t emulation or super expensive. When I was a kid for me to get new games I always had to trade in my old ones so there’s a lot of old games I with I still had that unfortunately I don’t. Sucks to hear, but honestly I’m still excited and I’m gonna pick it up. Maybe I’m part of the problem though lol.
It might not be that easy to have multiple va options. In a lot of the cinematics WD changed the timing of lip flaps and the like. So it isn't like you can paste the audio into the video. It's why the Saturn fan patch had to use the psp dub.

Justice for the Working Designs voice acting for the remastered collection!
I wish but that's not likely for both Lunar Legend and the PSP version none of the Working Designs actors showed up in either one of those Lunar games and that's because by the ttime Lunar Legend on the GBA was released Working Designs went broke and no longer exists.
So its 100% likely John Truitt won't be voicing Ghaleon in both PS1 Lunar games FOR the 2025 remaster of IT.
Are you freaking kidding me?! There's no voice acting? Or not the original voice acting? I'm done...... That's what made the game special for me. Not buying if that's true. I even have the ghaleon punching puppet, and used to act out my ghaleons' favorite scenes. 😭 It will suck without working design content & voices. Glad I own silver Star story complete now I just have to buy eternal blue box set for like $5,000. I thought Victor Ireland died. I could have sworn I read that. No working design version = no buy from me.
The remake will likely use voice acting it in BUT NOT with any of the Working Designs PS1 actors for BOTH since not even Lunar legend GBA or the PSP version KEPT the PS1 actors for Lunar 1 intact at all and didn't use ANY of them.

I got Lunar 1 on ps1, just a couple of months before the announcement of the remaster collection. Never played it before, and the voice acting is exactly what I was hoping for when starting! It's just got that 90s feel to it, and sound perfect. I honestly can't imagine playing it now with all new VA's.

I found out about Lunar from Gamer's Republic, and got curious enough to buy Silver Star Story.... and totally fell in love. I was pretty sad that it wasn't that popular here, so seeing so much love for the series makes me happy
While I'm certainly not at all a fan of Working Designs' localizations, and I am hoping we can finally get an authentic version of the games outside Japan, I do agree with MLiG that the old version should at least be an option (or maybe some free DLC somewhere down the line) for the people that DO want it.
The remaster of Azure Striker Gunvolt actually did something like this. The original 3DS version has a pretty divisive localization, and they redid it from scratch (and much more accurately) for the rereleases, but it actually does have an option to play with the old localization as well
Ireland likely wanted a bundle. He overvalues himself and many who grew up with WD have likely soured on them, I know I have. Localization is being charitable too.
For Silhouette Mirage he outright censored it with the demon storyline and everything.
The one credit I will give them is the Playstation games they localized were filled with swag for a very reasonable price. A number of companies nowadays offering extras could take a hint. I think Xseed versions of games on the Switch and elsewhere of Trinity Trigger and others are the ONLY ones who have taken the hint.
Atlus and others are now largely price gouging people with the CEs despite the exchange rate of Yen to the Dollar. It is REALLY fun for the Japanese game companies to treat Americans as cash machines to get as much USD out of them as they can instead of taking into the account the value of the exchange rate and pricing accordingly.
Honestly the ONE company I will give credit for actually being accurate here is Nintendo, where the Japanese CE of Tears had a softcover artbook while the American one had a hardcover.
In the opposite fashion Metaphor CE has a physical book for the Japanese market while the American has a digital that costs more. This is Atlus giving a slap in the face to American fans.
That is what worries me the most with these remakes/remasters. I don't want to see the localisation censored or butchered in anyway. Being respectful to the original creators is what I want to see, but sadly for me personally I don't think that will happen.

Damn, you know I never really thought about it but the voice acting may be the most impactful element of the PS1 releases. When I think of Lunar, the spoken dialog is always at the forefront. Hopefully it's at least decent, but at least these're also getting a graphical facelift.
I really think those of us who are old enough to remember what localizations were like (and how often they came out) before Working Designs are more likely to appreciate them. Some of my fondest memories are from playing games like Lunar and Dragon Force. They took some liberties with the translations, but most of the time they just added flavor that wooden, direct translations of the era didn't have. I really liked them. I'll be buying these of course, but it sounds like they're just putting these out there so those of us who want to play them can rather than putting any effort into them, much like the Grandia HD Remaster which I bought, started, and then went for the fan translation on my Saturn and my original Dreamcast copies of the games because they're so much better.
Yeah, I can't stand the hate WD gets. Without their work we would NEVER have gotten these games out West. They could've just translated the menus for all I care, teenage me just wanted more JRPG goodness.
@@acerimmer8338 Same boat! People need to understand that this was pretty much the figurative 'Wild West' of the localization timeline. If not for companies like Working Designs, yeah... we wouldn't have *most* of these now beloved franchises here when we did. If that industry hadn't started until, say... anime was taking off here, we'd have been at the tail end of PS1 era games, and these would have long since been skipped over.
And there were much more egregious localizations, even at the time. Not just the weird translations like the infamously hilarious "All your base are belong to us", but also some companies that either accidentally, or deliberately took it upon themselves to make games harder (like 7th Saga not having proper character scaling in the latter half, so monsters outpace you at what feels like astronomical rates).
Were jokey references like Nall being mistaken for the Tootsie Pop owl kinda cringe? Sure. But they were from NPCs off to the side that you didn't *need* to talk to. And the originals sometimes had no cultural relevance to westerners (not Lunar TSS/EB specifically).
I have faith that they will do the right thing if we, the fans, make our voices heard. So speak up!

Working Designs, everything included was all so incredible. And John Truitt is just so classic as Ghaleon. Ever since his first words of Luna just happening to step in on him playing his music, "Oh... it's... no bother..." Everything he wants just falling right into his lap, you feel it through and trough with John, just that little bit... And the translation was so lovingly re-crafted for the English.
I admit, I regret so deeply the three of us kids being stupid kids and playing with all the collectibles and parts of the Lunar 1 and 2 Complete, and misplacing them all.... We had all the little standees with the characters' faces, we had the cloth map and the Lucia's pendant. Have no idea where it all is, now... but we still have the games, and I'm so glad I played it...

Honestly, I have mixed feelings about this. While I do have fond memories of the Working Designs version, I recognize that it wasn't very accurate. Victor took tons of liberties with the script, and while that had a charm back in the day, I'm a bit peeved we never got an authentic experience back on the PS1. What I find odd is that the Remaster's trailer features the lyrics Victor's team wrote. I assume Victor has a right to those lyrics, so maybe they're still paying him at least for those? I'm curious how all this will look like in the final version. It's also strange because, as far as I'm aware, the Grandia remasters used the old localization with no issue.
Accurate is not a word I would use to describe the PSP version. There are references to Harry Potter littered throughout Vane and the additional content added at the beginning completely undermines the entire premise of the game by having Ghaleon talk to the ghost of a dead god only he can see.
@@twilightiger Yeah... those choices were *dumb.* Even for sake of cultural references... The books in Vane are all just about magic and world lore in general. Mistaking Nall for the Tootsie Pop owl was less egregious in the original Sega CD version! (the original line shows the guy to just be a forgetful adventurer. But they're a person of zero importance, saying stuff of nearly zero importance to the story or world lore. essentially 'free space'. still dumb, but not *that* dumb! xD )
I was 18 when lunar sliver star story complete came out. So same when this comes out and if there is a physical edition I’ll be all cover it.

Square Enix in recent years has set a certain standard for what I expect for modern RPG remasters. I just really want this remaster collection to meet that standard.
I kind of figured that all the Working Designs elements would go by the wayside here, but it is still kind of disappointing not to at least have the original voice acting as an option. Sure, WD took a lot of liberties with their localizations and the "me" of today is not wild about that, but the "me" that grew up with these games has a lot of love and admiration for them, as well as the guys that took the time to bring the games to us. It's a really mixed bag, but I guess we'll have to see how things shape up in the next few months.
I also got the Lunar games back when I was in high school, and I rocked Lucia's pendant as part of my daily attire. Of course, I was the only person at school that had one (and only my friends even knew what it was) and eventually it actually got me in trouble, as someone claimed it was "satanic"...and then I had to explain to the principal what Lunar was. 😅 Good times!

Love working designs. Definitely going to get them, but really hope they work something out.
I'm 39 years old, and I played both of these at release and nearly annually since. While I'm thankful for all the work that Vic and his team did back then, game localization was in a very different place in the 90s. The localization and voice quality from the Working Designs era is very dated by today's standards, and while I have a lot of nostalgia for it, I don't think it's suitable quality for a game release these days. I'm with Gungho and the decision to try to bring modern localization and voice acting quality to two of my top 10 games if all time. The original will always exist, after all.
The original exists so long as hardware still works,the links to Emulation is still there or if the game is not delisted. Don't be naive. The Industry has ways to make your point moot.

24 years old and emulated silver star story a couple years ago on a whim and loved it. I pray they can get the original voice over. There was something "nostalgic" about it all even tho I had never played it before. Changing VAs in something like P3Re made sense because it was a total remake but if this is just a remaster, don't remake the script and voices in my opinion, especially if the owner of the rights is literally saying "here, take it, please!"

I think the fans actually need to let GungHo know they won't purchase the remaster without the original voice actor options. The Original Voice Actors MADE the game. When Sony released Lunar for the PSP way back when and didn't include the original voice actors in it, I got to the point where you meet Ghaleon for the first time and I was like Nope.. I'm out. I've since become gun-shy about purchasing any other remake of this game without first knowing the original voice acting is included.

Would love the original voices, but I doubt we'll get them. I'm looking forward to hearing the new voices because modern voice over are really good now compared to the 90s.
I was never a fan of the Working Designs localizations and dubbing so I'm fine with this, and will be playing this only with Japanese audio / English subs. It's still a shame that fans of that might not have that option, but for me it is a non-issue.

I hope they don't taint the Lunar games. As for Working Designs, from what I understand, they claimed bankruptcy BECAUSE of Sony, which is the 1st qualm I held against 'em. WD's last game was Growlanser Generations (PS2), & WD wanted to release the 2 games separately, but Sony said no & forced 'em to pack 'em together, forcing WD to lose out on a lot of ca$h. At least that's what I researched, as I love 'em & have just about every game they released here in the US.
CONTINUED: Oh yeah, the PSP game, Lunar Silver Star Harmony has a different translation than the WD one, which I doubt they'll use, but who knows as of yet? I just hope they get it right.
I hope the voice actors get paid fairly.

a new translation would be the same but with modern pop culture jokes. that's what working designs did. also, there's no way they'd include the original translations. remasters usually only have an option for music and sometimes graphics if that at all
@Thatdeadpenguy I do agree that Working Designs unfortunately laid the ground work that plagues modern localization but unlike these days it is not done out of lazy malice. Richard Honeywood of Xenogears was also a GOAT in localization but even he made off color jokes such as the scene referencing Star Trek out of nowhere before a boss fight. Granted these old localizations had ZERO staff and resources put in an some cases had to be done in weeks time. These folks put modern localizers to shame.
I'll be waiting on that Steam mod to plugin the old localization 😂

Like the Lunar Silver Star Harmony remake, likely they'll just get new voice actors for the remasters if they do pass on Ireland's offer.
They will also have to change/censor some of Jean's attacks in Eternal Blue the PS1 game called those 2 Moves Charm Kiss and Enchanted kiss both cause the charm status but these days the word kiss can't really BE used in video games anymore but they could just call the 2 skills as Charm/Enchanted DANCE instead.
Id rather an option for the original japanese dialogue remastered and given faithful subtitles.
Great video David! I actually emailed the media rep for Lunar Remastered at Gung-ho about this but haven’t heard back and don’t really expect to since I’m not a platform or outlet.
I would even take this as DLC. As much as I’d prefer it on disc for the physical versions having higher quality of the WD performances available with outtakes for a small fee would be great.
Forgot to mention that in the podcast Vic said that GameArts already owns his text from the localization. That’s why the song can use the WD lyrics. They just do not own the performances.

I hope it's not because they don't want to give us English VA. I didn't even buy the Baten Kaitos collection because they didn't give us English VA in at least Origins. Origins stepped up the recording quality and they had Cat Taber (Mission Vao in KOTOR and Penelo in Final Fantasy XII) and Kym Hoy who would go on to voice Kasumi Goto in Mass Effect 2 and 3.

What I really need is a full on 3d remake, having it already on ps1 and PSP, I have no need desire to go backwards to another 2d version of the game. Give me something more open world and visually appealing like Tales of, Xenoblade, Trails, heck the Romancing Saga 2 is an example of a great remake in 3d.

I'm open to whatever new voice work they will do. Can't say it is bad without hearing the final product first but the old voice acting they should include it as an option imo. This way people have options to pick what they prefer.
They shoulve gone with the PSP sprite work and spell effects. I loved that version.
Only thing is they used the source code from the Saturn and PS1 versions to make this remasters so likely it'll be closer to those.

Man, this is worrisome. Both Lunar games are some of my all-time favorite games across all consoles. I have both games, the extra goodies, and the strategy guides. I was so hoping it would be faithful to the PS1 version.
I was sorta skeptical though at the same time. The humor for one would be outdated as the jokes were around 90's culture. Like Kyle crossdressing could be considered offensive. Not to mention the scene with Lucia in the hot spring and the Bromides. I really hope they do take that offer up and make it at least an option. That way, both generations can enjoy them. Plus John Truitt is Ghaleon. John gave Ghaleon his uniqueness. Don't deprive this new generation of that.
I'd love to see Lunar revived after the horrific DS game. This is a great way to reboot it.

I have never played the originals since I only started gaming in the 00s and have been playing catch up for nearly a quarter of a century. I actually want a new localization. I prefer new localizations when possible. It's the reason why I refuse to give SE any money for the FFVII-IX HD re-releases since it's the same damn script my old PS1 discs have. The only reason that I would even consider buying the potential FFIX remake would be for a new localization.
Thanks for the video David. As an owner of Lunar 1 & 2 on Sega Cd, Sega Saturn, and PS1, this just persuaded me not to pickup the new ones. I’ll go out and pickup a nice copy of the PSP one off ebay instead the day of. I know Victor Irelands passion. It can be seen throughout the interviews in working designs manuals and his interviews on extra discs. I won’t support a cash grab and something that doesn’t have that Working Designs extra. I will happily enjoy all the other versions I have. :)

I have every Lunar 1&2 U.S. and JP releases, and I understand your sentiments completely, but please support Lunar and buy it anyway. This is just business, and most IP owners will never shell out additional funds for unnecessary expenses.
Be prepared to be disappointed because the PSP version sucks. The battle system is different, the dialogue has all been changed, the characters and their motivations have been retconned and Crispin Freeman as Ghaleon is just . . . painful to listen to. Especially when he starts talking to the floating head of a dead god that only he can see. And the references to Harry Potter are just . . . why?

I was always curious about it due to the different look and a little bit of the prologue with the original four heroes but based off your assessment, I am going to stay away from that one then too and stick with my OGs from the 90s. Thanks for helping me dodge a bullet and save some money.
Sorry. I can’t and won’t buy the remakes because all it does is show that I am ok with the changes when I am not and it’s particularly why the gaming industry is in the state it is in now with Microtransactions, unfinished games coming out with massive downloads to fix them down the road, piss poor storage for said downloads, and games not truly owned and on disc any longer. I cannot go along with it or it just supports and normalizes what I don’t like about the industry.
Look! I love Lunar & its sequal just like the next rpg lover! but we need to be thankful its even coming out out at all! And not "nitpick" the remasters to death! Over something like og VA. We need to show support by buying the game when its released. I think these nitpicks can be a little harsh!
This actually made me so depressed because it makes me miss actual handdrawn anime cutscenes in games. I remember playing PS1 RPGs and seeing the next voiced cutscene as a reward for progressing to the next part. In game model cutscenes can be nice and all, but a lot of the time it's limited to the Engine's animations and stuff which can look really stilted.. but having really detailed anime cutscenes for climactic moments of the story really enhanced the effect and it always gave me a dopamine rush when it cut to one of them when entering an area or speaking to someone specific.
This just confirms to me what I've long suspected about many of these remasters & remakes - they're low effort ways to repackage games & cash in on nostalgia.
It's crazy how many of these supposed "remasters" run worse than the originals, despite being on significantly better hardware.
Whether it's Tales of Symphonia or Star Wars Battlefront or Paper Mario TTYD, there's no excuse for these things. Then you have games like the Mario 3D All-Stars collection, Chrono Cross, FF8, Luigi's Mansion 2 HD, DK Country Returns HD, etc. that all look a bit better, but offer little else & are sold for full price (or more than the originals).
I'll probably still get this game, but I'm about done supporting these types of projects.
I think we need to coordinate some sort of effort - think of the "Save Shenmue" crowd (despite what you may have thought of Shenmue 3) - they made their voices loud and heard, and got the game made. If we want the definitive Lunar remasters, we need to make sure Gung Ho knows we are loud and many! Let me know how I can help!

Okay, but I just re-watched the trailer for the remaster collection. It seems to fully English voice-acted, you even have characters talking during combat. From those few samples in the trailer the voice acting seems really good!
Why are the Sega CD versions ignored as far as well? Break my heart twice I guess....
It's pretty sad. I actually think Eternal Blue is better on Sega CD.
But Eternal Blue had 1 feature that's pure CRAP Originally using the Magic Exp system to SAVE the game and the more HOURS you have on the games TIMER + the higher Hero's EXP lv the MORE Magic exp it costs so you could either use that EXP for learning the new skills/spells in game or Save but possibly NOT BOTH at once.

@@veghesther3204 Yeah, that's the biggest issue with Sega CD Eternal Blue, and that was entirely due to it being added in by Working Designs. The OG Japanese Mega CD version of Eternal Blue didn't require Magic Exp for saving.

I love their limited editions, their hardcover strategy guides... I wish they'd start a limited run tyoe thing. Bring back awesome snes/ps1 japan only games... I'd pay real money for their awesome quality.

I think a lot of people are attached to the WD translation because that's the only option there was. Personally I'm hoping for a better, more accurate version. Whether that will actually be the case, time will tell.
I went back and compared the few voice clips from the Remastered trailer to the PS1 version. I don't have any emotional attachment to the old voices, but I didn't find the new ones worse, personally. Definitely different delivery from Jessica and Hiro, but I don't recall their characterization enough to really have a feeling one way or another. It's interesting that the few clips shown follow the same exact script as the old version.
As for the songs, I'm not too worried yet. The song used in the trailer sounded good. The vocal performance was probably better, though it does sound more "produced," if that makes sense. Like singing it outside vs in the studio.
Anyway, I'm cautiously optimistic so far. There is a reason some people refer to WD as "Wrecking" Designs, after all.
I'm not going to buy it if it doesn't have the work designs stuff as a an option. I can play any version of the game i like on an emulator and even if I couldn't the collection is too expensive if the people putting it out aren't interested in doing everything they can to deliver a quality product. The entire point of this remaster is to capitalize on nostalgia and if this is at all possible, it needs to happen, and if it's not possible, there's no reason to bother.
I was worried about this day 1 when they announced this. Then even moreso when they said they'd be redoing the VA. Thankfully i still have the originals, but i don't think this is gonna be the game we all remember.

@@Bit_Mingus I mean... there are 'other options' out there, if original hardware doesn't work or might be failing (though I *do* worry it may fail, one day. so far so good. and I'm currently LP'ing TSS! if I can shamelessly plug. xD ). Though I think the parts they used were actually better than most. Unlike the Gamecube, where the reader and spin motor both go to crap and it needs to 'warm up' before playing anything. Luckily the WII plays those games too! xD
@ I keep the sega cd games in collection plastic and I enjoy just taking them out to look at once in awhile! But for me, I don’t mind playing them on ps1 I have many of those systems an they’re cheap!
It’s a remaster and the original audio was on CD… I don’t see why they can’t just use the original audio.
Do like they do with the music in some games. Add an option to use new or old in options
although i would love the actors to comeback for their English roles. I am willing to give new talent a chance as well.
Wind Nocturn is a song that I loved growing up, and although I understand the lyrics are fairly different from the Japanese original, I would still love it to stay with the English translation version.
Wasn’t a fan of how WD made their localizations of games really grindy by reducing exp and money earned to a degree that made the games less fun than the Japanese originals. Also some text dialogue choices were less than ideal.
But that said the original English voices should be an option available for people who want it.
Fortunately I think the game balance of this version will be better so you dont have to grind. The PS1 North American Lunar is one of the few RPGS you literally have no choice but to sit there grinding enemies to be high enough level to pass many bosses
At least you *could* still earn money and Exp at a decent rate. And HP/MP shrines were dotted about fairly well enough you could get into a higher grinding area with not much trouble ...unlike the later half of 7th Saga, where enemies just turn into an iron wall. All because someone dumped part of the code that handled character growth when leveling to like 1-3 points for all stats but HP or some stupid low amount (been a few years since my last play), while monsters were nearly 7-10 per each level.
I know many hate it but I always liked working designs translations. I enjoyed the cultural references and didn't mind the difficulty (I had no idea they made them harder until seeing people recently complain online)
Love the video thank you for the information. I’m still going to get them. Personally I’m just excited to have a way to play these older games from when I was a kid that isn’t emulation or super expensive. When I was a kid for me to get new games I always had to trade in my old ones so there’s a lot of old games I with I still had that unfortunately I don’t. Sucks to hear, but honestly I’m still excited and I’m gonna pick it up. Maybe I’m part of the problem though lol.
It might not be that easy to have multiple va options. In a lot of the cinematics WD changed the timing of lip flaps and the like. So it isn't like you can paste the audio into the video. It's why the Saturn fan patch had to use the psp dub.

I have mixed feelings towards this since I loved the localization at the time, but it was very unique and probably doesn’t fit today's humor and translation styles. It would be nice to have both old and new voice options, but it likely would be too difficult. Still love Ghaleon though 😊
i wouldent be suprised if the voices are added back in for a mod these are going to be relased on pc so it will get modded eventualy

The Arc the lad collection is what killed Working Designs. Growlanser Generations just drove the nails into the coffin
I always enjoyed WD's translations. Were they the most 1-1 accurate? No. But they were fun.
