$220 per week comes out to $11,440 per year. A full-time, minimum-wage worker in TN makes $15,080 per year. When working folks have to spend 75% of their income for non-profit housing, the system is beyond broken.
That still amounts to only $880 a month. Keep in mind, there’s no downpayment(security deposit) and no requirement for at least a month or two of rent in advance as well.

I’m now 90 minutes away. It’s devastating that even with my solid income I can no longer afford to live in the place that will always be my home.

the problem with those suites still are that people on disability or welfare only get about $6-700 a month for rent. i’m glad they are there. but i was expecting $220 A MONTH !!! Not a week. ok i get it’s not a non profit. but they shouldn’t be over $600. it’s great compared to a car. or tent. but not for the long run. they must have had to make a good profit to have built these. not a non profit. something tells me their mortgage isn’t $50,000 a month if you think about it. that’s how much it should cost for a one bedroom apartment. the mom was paying that amount for a three bedroom just a few years ago. we have allowed big corps to buy up all of our housing stock to charge whatever they want. now our children who work hard can’t afford to buy homes. i bought a home at 22 but my now twin sons at age 32 both have above living wage jobs stable jobs can’t afford to buy even an apartment in 🇨🇦. you have to make a combined $220,000 a year to afford to buy here. what have we done to them.
States need to pass laws prohibiting real estate investors from purchasing swaths of apartments and single family homes then artificially inflating the price of rent or the homes. This is not inflation, this is nothing more than corporate greed and the only way it will stop is for governments to clamp down on the vultures.
The real problem is Wages , and that is clear all over The US . A single person working a non-college degree job should be paying no more than 30% of their Take Home pay for housing . Corporate Land lords and Corporate Rental Management Companies drive up housing prices by driving up Demand and some of these companies aren't even based in The US . If nobody is going to do anything to curb The Corporate Housing problems , then we need to seriously boost Wages . Most large companies are already charging higher prices for increased labor cost but most haven't given that wage increase to the employees yet .
I remember when rent was one of the cheapest things in America! My sister's 3 bedroom, 1 bath, and 1 car garage home, was appraised at 35 thousand dollars less than 10 years ago, now it's appraised at 220 thousand dollars by her local appraisal district! Greed has destroyed this country for the working class, and poor!

The enemy called the devil tried to hinder her faith but God prevail. With the help of God, Ms. Tweedy and family was so appreciative and grateful.
10 years ago I could get a 1100 sq ft 2 bedroom 1.5 bath apartment in a good area for $900. And that’s in Canada which is way more expensive than the USA. This “feel good” story is highlighting the sad state of affairs and reality of many. But why?
Why don't they turn all of the vacant factories and office buildings into apartments? You could have a factory building transformed into a whole community with a small dining facility, small grocery, and other needed services like daycare supported by employing the residents.
Why don't the landlords of the apartments lower the rent. There's apartments for everyone but there expensive. Why make more apartments if the apartments going to be expensive. I don't understand
I’m so happy the Tweedy family have a proper place to sleep, I know this is a major burden off the mom. I pray she’s able to also find a decent job to support her family. I am in awe of her strength and ability to hold it together like she did, her children are blessed to have a mom like her. Now, where is their dad, he should be shouldering responsibility for his kids and helping out.
Ms Tweetie is so intelligent, articulate, etc...I'm wondering if she thought about applying for city, state, or federal jobs?...Given her previous experience
Amid a national housing crisis, giant private equity firms have been buying up apartment buildings en masse to squeeze them for profit, with the help of government-backed Freddie Mac. Meanwhile, tenants say they’re the ones paying the price.
DoorDash and even Uber/Lyft are dying off. I want to hear how the first lady living in her car has been applying for actual full time jobs with full time pay.
I'm sorry, but $900 a month for a studio is not low income housing. The benefit (?) it has is that it is money-only and people do not have to follow the other impossible barriers like 3x income and credit scores; as well does probably include utilities. It allows low income people to spend almost ALL their money for the privilege of a bed instead of street or car, which of course many will make that personal calculation. But please stop calling anything above $200 for a room or above $900 for a 2 bedroom dwelling, "low income housing".
Here’s a brilliant idea. We make shareholding on apartments illegal. Why should I and 340 others pay $3000 a month because of 10 rich shareholders needing half a million profits a month. When we could all pay $1800 or less and make one company or landlord $100,000?!
@outstandingstarsproductions I rented same place for 27 years and I can't afford the increase, the landlord wants all non Americans and that's the only way he could get me out is by raising the rent, I'm single no children
Where else but in this country that people who work can't afford rent even private landlords have increased their prices. I'm about to become homeless again as my lease is expiring at the end of January. There is a crack house two doors down from us and more drug activity and prostitute activity in the other direction. I tried to get into senior housing based on my income but they me I have to on a waiting list for 2 to 3 years. I have a dog that's about 40 pounds he's like my son we go everywhere together and spend most of our time together I can't give him up. So who knows what the future will bring. Where else in this country where billionaires can spend millions on boats homes and lavish wedding while others sleep in the streets.
What's crazy in the United States is that you can have a full-time job, be homeless, and the U.S. government will not consider you to be living in poverty because you make too much. Yet, you can't afford to rent, let alone buy a house.
Good the non profit was able to help the lady and her three kids. Agree, with the non profit lady, not everyone is looking for a house; just need a one bedroom apartment or studio. Many who are actually working, as this woman with three children sleeping in her car, and have had to sleep in their cars or in the streets, those definitely need help and the public does not mind that those receive temporary Welfare or shelter. The issue comes up where those who just have gone on to generational welfare, they don't work, don't go to school; just keep having child after child after child, without fathers even supporting any of those kids and it is the American taxpayer who has to foot the bill for all their kids. Then the cycle repeats when those kids have kids starting at age 14!.
SOMETHING IS terribly wrong with every city, now countries experiencing high rents and homelessness. What is going on people??? Why is this happening?? We supposedly are the richest country in the world experiencing homelessness for so many people. Even the working class. No one should be on these streets, especially whole families.

yea i was thinking the same thing... The homeless housing in my city, the cheapest option, is 50$ a month for a studio. (granted its not 'fancy', but its a warm.) They are not doing anyone a favor, my friend works for a non profit.. he says its the most money he's ever made.
@@zoraidaayala4638 Aren't the utilities included? I think it's reasonable if everything is included
That’s great either way utilities included
$220 a WEEK! THATS NOT AFFORDABLE HOUSING!
what do you expect? $50 a week?
I was going to say that’s affordable 😂
It's tough out there on the street, I'm do happy that the Tweetys found a safe secure space, especially during the Christmas holidays, small though it is, they're All dtill together ❤
220.00 a week ????
Knoxville is my hometown. I spent most of my life there. I moved away for about 7 years and when I moved back, I was dumbfounded by the asinine cost of housing, even in the low income neighborhood where I grew up off of Western Ave. My entire family has had to move to other cities. I’m now 90 minutes away. It’s devastating that even with my solid income I can no longer afford to live in the place that will always be my home.
Driving a $80,000.00+ car doesn't help? With insurance, there's your affordable housing! Missed placed priorities could possibly be an issue.as well.
If we keep ignoring the obvious, are we really helping?
I'm disabled now and after taking an early retirement, I'm barely getting by. I lost my wife to cancer, sold my home, and now in a renovated former hotel turned "apartments." It's terrible... I'm in Branson, Mo... The city cators to people with money. The old, the disabled, are forgotten. No public housing. I live in one room... Thankful to have a roof over my head but it's ran like a drug infested ghetto. No place for seniors but here we are. Sometimes converting these places for long term living is good... but in most cases, they are just about the money and put very little into them. My check pays rent... very little left for anything else.
Knoxville is getting to expensive to live in.
This is no different than renting a room in an extended stay motel, the price is even the same! It's still around $1,000/mo, double what it should be given wages. Heck I rented a house for $600 10yrs ago and wages haven't really changed since then. It's time for a general strike.
Wages have changed unless you work a dead end job
Some cant afford 220 a week. Seniors dont get that much. Sad.
Qneshia, I'm happy for you and your kids.
Wheres the fathers?
Can they put in cubicle walls so each bed has some privacy ?
Greed & cruelty rules America.
Yessss ms tweedy! a great mom doing what she can for her kids. So happy she got into some housing, whether it be temporary or not. its great to see, we need to do better as a society but anything helps now!
This is across the US, lack of affordable housing is a huge issue.
We're is her husband? 3 children and not married is poor decision no wonder people are suffering.
You don't know her circumstances. ALso, she had a good job and was doing just fine by herself before the job shut down. Not everyone wants or needs a husband and we don't know why he's not in the picture. She is doing 120% for her kids!
@EricaGamet Nice excuse everyone knows a two parent house hold is better then one you think she is suffering because she is a single mom? Nope it's because she has kids that cost money to maintain she should be married you want to give her your money to take care of the kids? Stop defending people who make poor choices then complain about it she should of been married and so more income coming in instead of her having to be dependent on government.
@@bitesizedtunes6783 You know nothing of the world (or punctuation and spelling, apparently). You don't know her situation. If a woman is married with 3 kids and doesn't work then her husband leaves or dies, she would also be in this situation through no fault of her own. She had a good paying job... good enough to raise her kids. But then the unexpected happened: She lost her job. Lots of folks without kids also find themselves in this situation. You blaming her for poor decision making is a myopic and privileged position to take.
Its big private equity. Its small landlords who aspire to be like private equity. Its not having support to adjust to the changing employment market terrain. Its wage suppression thru gig economy. I don't have a catch all solution, I'm terrified how things will be 10 years from now.
This was great of y'all to help her and the kids
Why on earth would anyone be a landlord knowing that the government can tell you at anytime you cannot collect rent or evict a tenant?
She's driving a mercedes-benz..... that tells me a lot about how she spent her money when she was working.
I work in healthcare full time and STILL cant afford a Mercedes
She was a manager and maybe she was making very good money or she got divorced or her husband died. We don't know. I had a new car that my mom bought me as I lived in low income apartments. We just never know so don't judge.
Ya noticed that too
Ownership of living space needs to be a legally guaranteed right.
I’m am so very happy to see she got a room for her family!!! I pray they keep there faith & she can breathe again for awhile. ❤❤
This brought tears to my eyes I started to cry.I'm so happy. Those kids have a warm bed and a hot shower.I can't complain about my situation when so many people had it much harder That mom can finally rest tonight 🙏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
I’m so happy for her: this is tough.
Rent 220$ a week , r u fuckin insane
that's pretty cheap. i pay %900 a month to rent a room in someone's house, that's $30 a day, which is not bad either
I think she needs financial counseling more than anything else. smh
Sooo happy for ms tweedy.
the problem with those suites still are that people on disability or welfare only get about $6-700 a month for rent. i’m glad they are there. but i was expecting $220 A MONTH !!! Not a week. ok i get it’s not a non profit. but they shouldn’t be over $600. it’s great compared to a car. or tent. but not for the long run. they must have had to make a good profit to have built these. not a non profit.
something tells me their mortgage isn’t $50,000 a month
if you think about it. that’s how much it should cost for a one bedroom apartment. the mom was paying that amount for a three bedroom just a few years ago. we have allowed big corps to buy up all of our housing stock to charge whatever they want. now our children who work hard can’t afford to buy homes. i bought a home at 22 but my now twin sons at age 32 both have above living wage jobs stable jobs can’t afford to buy even an apartment in 🇨🇦. you have to make a combined $220,000 a year to afford to buy here. what have we done to them.
How can I get information on doing the same thing here where I live?
I remember when rent was one of the cheapest things in America!
My sister's 3 bedroom, 1 bath, and 1 car garage home, was appraised at 35 thousand dollars less than 10 years ago, now it's appraised at 220 thousand dollars by her local appraisal district!
Greed has destroyed this country for the working class, and poor!
Thank God the Tweedy's family got place the family can call home. Ms. Tweedy did not fail like she stated in the first esposide of the Matter of Fact about affordable housing. The enemy called the devil tried to hinder her faith but God prevail. With the help of God, Ms. Tweedy and family was so appreciative and grateful.
4 beds perfect. Sometimes thats all you need. You have a kitchen and bathroom and keeps rent down.
Renting the never-ending cycle of making other people. Rich
Sooooooo........ NO support from Pops?
10 years ago I could get a 1100 sq ft 2 bedroom 1.5 bath apartment in a good area for $900. And that’s in Canada which is way more expensive than the USA. This “feel good” story is highlighting the sad state of affairs and reality of many. But why?
people can get that where I live in a very large city in the US today
@@royharper2003 which city?

How can I make a contribution to the tweedy family,
you guys should at least have some decency and blur out the children’s faces
Interesting this is where Soledad is up to these days.
As opposed to what?
Why don't they turn all of the vacant factories and office buildings into apartments? You could have a factory building transformed into a whole community with a small dining facility, small grocery, and other needed services like daycare supported by employing the residents.
Why don't the landlords of the apartments lower the rent. There's apartments for everyone but there expensive. Why make more apartments if the apartments going to be expensive. I don't understand
We need federal laws that say it is illegal to raise rent more than 5% per year until then stop paying taxes americans
I own a 3 flat in Chicago....i cannot afford A Mercedes SUV.....!!!!!
Affordable housing means rich people will buy them and sell/rent them for more. The question is...Who is renting/buying these homes.
It's not high demand it's corporate greed
I’m so happy the Tweedy family have a proper place to sleep, I know this is a major burden off the mom. I pray she’s able to also find a decent job to support her family. I am in awe of her strength and ability to hold it together like she did, her children are blessed to have a mom like her. Now, where is their dad, he should be shouldering responsibility for his kids and helping out.
WTH, $220 a week , that's $880 a month for a small studio?? That's not very affordable either!!
I am so happy for Quinesha and her children. Nobody should be forced to live in there cars. I needed to hear some good news❤
Ms Tweetie is so intelligent, articulate, etc...I'm wondering if she thought about applying for city, state, or federal jobs?...Given her previous experience
Is there a way to help families?
Yes. Donate to local non profits who are trying to help fix the issue. Complain to your state and local lawmakers in TN or your state where you are.
Amid a national housing crisis, giant private equity firms have been buying up apartment buildings en masse to squeeze them for profit, with the help of government-backed Freddie Mac. Meanwhile, tenants say they’re the ones paying the price.
I wonder how she lost her job? Did she got terminated, or laid off?
Downsizing means laid off. 🤦🏾♀️
DoorDash and even Uber/Lyft are dying off. I want to hear how the first lady living in her car has been applying for actual full time jobs with full time pay.
$220 a week is still expensive, and will make it really difficult to get ahead
I'm in Virginia and I'm going to be homeless for the first time
@outstandingstarsproductions I rented same place for 27 years and I can't afford the increase, the landlord wants all non Americans and that's the only way he could get me out is by raising the rent, I'm single no children
Where else in this country where billionaires can spend millions on boats homes and lavish wedding while others sleep in the streets.
move to a cheaper city or country. do you expect peolpe with money to pay your rent?
What's crazy in the United States is that you can have a full-time job, be homeless, and the U.S. government will not consider you to be living in poverty because you make too much. Yet, you can't afford to rent, let alone buy a house.
She spent all her money for rent on food clearly
It's greed, plain ansimple.
If that price includes utilities then it's not too bad but still steep for low income. That's 880.00 a month.
Look at 1:01. She's driving a Mercedes. Something doesn't add up here.
1800 units at $880 a month is insanely laughable. most social security is $980 a month. not sure what grandparents or father allowing their grandchildren to sleep in the car
Where are the kids dads?
