Making this tonight. Chetna just keeps uploading fantastic recipes. If you don’t have her books you should definitely order one. Really simple and super delicious recipes.
Thank you so much, thats very kind!
Mmmmmmmmmm
I'm going home and making this
Dunno if anyone cares but if you guys are bored like me during the covid times you can watch all the new movies and series on Instaflixxer. I've been watching with my gf during the lockdown :)
@Nikolai Gerardo yup, I have been using Instaflixxer for months myself =)
Thanks for another great recipe.
For anyone who wants to try it out too:
• 500g black eyed beans
• 1 teaspoon of salt
• 2-3 tablespoon sunflower oil
• 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
• 1 large onion, roughly chopped
• 3 garlic cloves, minced
• piece of ginger, grated
• 400g tomatoes
• 1 teaspoon turmeric powder
• 1 teaspoon garam masala
• 2 teaspoon coriander powder
• 1 teaspoon chili powder
• perhaps 100ml of water and around 200ml of boiling water
• top it with fresh coriander
Adorable! Other cooks would say, _"I'm just adding some tinned tomatoes here, but of course, if you prefer fresh tomatoes, that'd be fine too"_ ... instead, Chetna, you immediately confess you've run out of fresh tom's! I love how you treat us more as old friends than as an anonymous audience.
You lot sure are, it is all real cooking in a family home
I was shocked and excited to learn another culture loves Black-eyed peas (as I grew up calling them). A staple in our home and a must a New Year's!
found this just in time: in some parts of the US (especially in the South), eating black-eyed peas on New Year's Day is considered to be auspicious for the new year. Some consider eating them with tomatoes as extra special for success and wealth in the new year (including greens such as collards and corn bread is part of this tradition for some, as well). Thus, I might try this recipe with some greens mixed in and served with makki ki roti or even just typical American corn bread (though I tend to desi-ize it with chilies and such). Maybe gongura achar instead of adding greens to the beans.
Love it. Thank you Chetna. Going to do this with grilled fish tikka.
I just made a “curried stew” of black eyed peas today! What I found is that the peas behave like giant oversized lentils in that you can mash it before adding to the masala. There’s a very light sweetness to it that’s just lovely!
Made this on New Year's Day, it's awesome and will definitely make it again.
Namaste from NJ, USA! It's a rainy, chilly fall day over here, perfect for comfort curry!Thank you so much for sharing your Amazing recipes with us! I made the palak dal recipe today, delicious!
Be well!
Hi Chetna. Can you also use tinned black eyed peas for this?
Lovely recipe. It's also called chawli👍🏻My friend calls Lobia♥️
Oh nice
I despisseee lobia, but tried out your recipe today and was soo yumm.. Coincidentally , I was out of fresh tomatoes and I ended up using tomato paste, and it was delicious!
Wow. Perfect black beans curry cooking. Its look delicious recipe...yummy...

@@lindaharris9714 oooh how exciting! Fingers crossed it will get there soon....x
@@lindaharris9714 Did it arrive yet or still delayed in the post?
@@Gorguruga it arrived
Thank you… it’s cooking slowly for an hour now 😍
How many quarts is your pressure cooker?
Question regarding "Chetna's Healthy Indian Vegetarian": is it a vegetarian version of "Chetna's Healthy Indian"? Or is it a book with new recipes?
All new recipes
I am in the middle of cooking black eyed peas and I end up in your blog delicious dish
yeah! welcome to the channel
Hi Chetna. Love your recipe’s. My mum and grandmum used to make the exact same recipe with two potatoes. It’s just as delicious and you should give it a go. 😃 it’s so creamy and delicious with chapati’s or in a bowl.
Delicious, thanks!
Fantastic, I just love bean curries always cooking it, plus best inexpensive vegetarian protein. Mmm tasty mama! 👌👍😘
yum always!
thanks
Hi chetna love your video the pot you using looks awesome can you message me were I can buy it thanks
One week ago, I cooked it twice. It was so tasty.
It is a lovely dish
Hm... am wondering if I can't make the massala in the instant pot (sauté mode), than add the raw beans and water, and than pressure cook the lot in one go 🤔
Thanks for another great recipe Chetna
My pleasure 😊
Hi Chetna, I always find that ny curries turn out very bitter when I use tomatoes from a can. Adding some sugar helps but only a small bit. Can you recommend anything to prevent this?
Use fresh or test taste canned tomatoes before adding in pan.
You might want to try a different brand. If you are in the US, Cento and Progresso are consistently good. Some of the American brands like Red Pack and Del Monte are really tinny and bitter. America's Test Kitchen did a tinned tomato comparison a long time ago, and it was very accurate.
What if I don’t have a pressure cooker how can I make this ?? Xxx
exact same thing cooked in a pan, just takes a bit longer to cook
Have you tried Instant Pot? It's a great alternative to Pressure Cooker!
Is the chili powder any special kind? Or all chili powders the same?
Does ginger garlic paste work as well?
yes for sure
I cooked your recipe, it worked out so perfect and yummy!
I love making this as well. Yum 😋
So good!
So good!
❤❤❤
We cook black eyed peas in an Instant pot with bay leaf and cloves, salt, then for 10 minutes. Then, we add a protein, onions, spices and finish on the range.
👍🏼
Love Lobia curry and this looks so good.
Awesome recipe Chetna!!! Made yesterday for dinner and everyone just loved it. Thanks for sharing the recipe . Happy holidays!!!
yessss
Thanks
Love it
So easy
I’m puzzled. I tried this last night, and it seemed under seasoned - the flavors just felt ‘flat’. Fresh tomatoes, fresh spices, etc., just seemed bland for a Chetna recipe
200ml water is also 200g, so you were right.
Chetna no offence but you are burning the onions as well as the tomatoes, need to cook in very low heat and use a little bit more oil, once u burn onions that flavour will stay
You look like shakti mohan 😍
who is that?

We called it ‘Ruanh’. ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਰੁਆਂਹ ਕਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ ।
Hi chetna
Omg we call black eye peas loobia in Egypt too lol
Thats so interesting
@@FoodwithChetna yes other Arabs calls green beans lobia but Egyptian call that to black eye peas
Nigerians eat a black eye pea stew too, but I don't know what it is called.
@@lindaharris9714 yes i have a Nigerian friend and she told me they stew it like we do in Egypt. We love eating beans in Africa. My personal favorite is the black eye peas, fava and garbanzo beans.
This recipe is nothing like the recipe in the book (pg 94). Frankly this looks better than what is in the book, I will be trying it soon.
