Okuma Tundra TU-80 Reel Review & Anti Reverse Problem

- A review of the Okuma Tundra TU-80 spinning reel and explanation of the one fault of an otherwise decent reel.
The downfall of this reel is an intermittent problem with the Anti Reverse that causes it to simply disengage at random intervals. The problem can be traced to an undersized spring that holds tension on the anti reverse pawl.
If you have fixed a similar problem on this reel or one like it, I would love to know what solution you came up with.
*Update* On December 27, 2016 I was contacted by Okuma and given the name of a representative to speak with. After a few minutes on the telephone, I was informed they will be sending me two of the updated anti-reverse springs free of charge. I will get these installed when they arrive and do an updated video accordingly.
I took the end of the spring and put a small j bend in it and that fixed the problem right away
Thanks for the heads up.
Also don't grease use spray lube. The greasy is to thick and causes the added friction causing the spring to be ineffective
I have the same setup. I resolved the problem by loosening the screw on the post holding the spring. It was only a slight turn, not more than 1/32, only a tad.
Did that fix it?
I have the same problem with the reel. the brake does not work and the naylon does not stop coming off the reel. the difference that in your video there is a piece of black plastic that mine does not bring it. Can you get that plastic piece? I live in El Salvador. thank you.
Sub'd today due 2 ur video !!LuV Okuma reels usually" sad 2hear abt this happening !
Hello!I opened my Okuna Noir sfr40 and clean it from the salt(it was swimming in Atlantic)degrease it and when i want tu put it together this v-spring on antireverse felt out and now i dont know how tu pout it back in antireverse...Hellp!!!Maybe some explanation or picture how it looks beafore?Thank you!
I got the tu 50 same problem I fix it
My okuma avenger abf 50 just crapped out. The spool spins backwards like there is no drag but the dial is turned up? ? So I can reel up just fine but the line is easily pulled out. Any idea what the issue could be? I've Seen a few videos that make okuma spin reels look bad , maybe a trend perhaps
There are definitely folks better than I at diagnosing and repairing reels. But off the top of my head I would suspect problems with the drag washer stack. Either the drag washers have gotten contaminated and are now slipping against each other regardless of tension, or have otherwise failed.
I have 3 Okuma reels. Two line counter trolling reels and this spinning reel. The trolling reels seem to be built solidly. This reel was solidly constructed as well aside from that anti reverse spring. Doubling up on anti reverse springs made the difference and I've been using that reel ever since.
Sorry I couldn't give you a better answer.
is this a defect on all of the tundra models? now I am a bit worried if I buy this and it stalls
Yes, this is a defect on all of the Tundra spinning reels by Okuma. Please see my other video I posted a few days after this one for the solution. Since doing the repair shown in my other video, this reel has been 100% reliable as far as the anti-reverse functioning correctly. While my modification has enabled this reel to be reliably used, if I had it to do over, I would not purchase a Tundra reel. The Penn Fierce II reels, though they cost a little more, are a far more reliable and reel.
if you check you comments, I have a question about the placement of the spring that keep tha anti reverse open while reeling, 8 can seem to find the right way it goes
Send me a message through my Facebook page. I can send pics through there.
I think I will be waiting to get a little bit better one save a little bit more money
That would be my recommendation.
Get the TBF akuma tundra
I have one for 4 years it's my favorite pole u might of got a bad model
And u dont have the bait clicker on there
There is not a bait clicker on this reel.
at $34 these reels are desposible. You got some nerve
It's about being a stubborn Irishman.
But you're quite right, the reel is disposable.
anti reverse isn't a big deal is it
It only is if you don't want your reel to randomly roll backwards letting out endless amounts of line. :)
Its happens to me sometimes. Not a huge deal
Try have it happening when you're tight lining and let me know how it works out for you. This reel is good once fixed, but until it is it's junk.
I think I'm just gonna buy a different combo ehh 10ft for a river isn't very fun
I don’t know why someone would want a reel that would want to reel backwards anyways
