South Australia Rail - 1989 VHS edit

  • An assortment of rail activity from SA in 1989 including plenty of GM's, infact, GM's galore - even on the Indian Pacific! There is a BL and 2 GM's on the Leigh Creek coal, a 930 'B' end leading on a short grain and a 500 shunting plus more.
Again, the technical quality is poor as it is an old VHS to VHS edit.

AN green and gold was defiantly a vibe.

Class leader GM1 "Robert Gordon Menzies" sat in old Parkes NSW loco yard for near four years deteriorating, it left in the first week of April bound for WA, an eight day road journey on a low loader. I loved that green and gold AN livery, especially when the loco bogies were painted silver or yellow.

The green and gold was very pleasant. I especially like the 930's with yellow bogies.

That's actually some good old school filming there. It is so enthralling one barely notices the lower quality. In fact I might go so far as saying it adds a certain charm even if it is only VHS.

Thx for your comments. All these early vids were assembled between two domestic video recorders way back in the 1980's- a JVC and a Panasonic, both expensive machines at the time, with many many hours sitting on the floor with them going back and forwards and gradually piecing the videos together. As ive commented a few times elsewhere, I have digitised all the camera tapes and will digitally re-edit these and tidy them up a bit, plus fix the frame rate. Some how the setting found its way to 24 fps instead of 25, thats why a frame is dropped every second. I realised way too late.
One things for sure, the Leigh Creek coal train sequence will remain largely as is, complete with the awesome Tangerine Dream track of music - to my mind it works just nicely and is one of my favourite sequences of all the videos Ive done :-)

Nice footage of an era about to be transformed with the withdrawal of much of the GM and 930 fleet in the coming years and changes in rolling stock.
Glad you shared it with us being an old AN man.👨

1989, we rode the train from Perth to Alice, pulled by a pair of GM's like these. It was the Indian Pacific part way and The Ghan the rest. We had a great conductor who let us take a free room in the crew car on the last half of the journey because he found out we were rail fans. His name was Ivan. (Don't tell anyone because he'd probably get in trouble!) I don't recall if the IP took us all the way to Adelaide where we changed to the Ghan, or if we changed at a town in northern SA. Anyone know? My memory ain't what it used to be. Thanks.

Ah the good old Australian National.
Knew them well. Dad was one of the many drivers they had back when this was filmed.

@@tedbear4243 l was a Fireman then Loco Driver with ANR, started as Trainee Engineman Cleaner at Port Pirie, so got to see myriad of motive power, 600,700,830,GM,CL&AL on standard gauge, 700,900,930 on broad! Even occasional 80 class from NSW! Hauled a Hammersley loco back on 413 goods ex Mile End once, and I've a photo of Westrail DB at Pirie loco, would've been when Clyde's had factory at Rosewater in Adelaide. I transferred to Dry Creek when Pirie line was standardised. Forgot to mention, had English Electric 50O on Broad and Standard gauge at Port Pirie too!!

When did you transfer to Dry Creek?
My Dad was a fireman in Peterbough for ANR then he transferred to Dry Creek when Peterbough was being "shut down" in 1982. He became a driver after that & remained a driver until he decided to leave in 1993.
Curious to know if you ever met or worked with my Dad. 😊

Bravo depuis la France, une belle video d'époque (1988) de bonne qualité et bien réalisée. Les musiques de l'époque sont meilleures que la bouillie sonore d'aujourd'hui.

Some great SA stuff, the Alco’s & the 500 class 👌🏻
Did you get much other 830 stuff in SA ???! I spent 3 weeks over there in 2015 chasing them up the Barossa Valley & eyre peninsula

Seems to me the NSW 44s were a large success weras the SA 930s they were much quicker to scrap as most were gone before the 90s compared to the later model 44s which survive years longer until the great SRA Alco purge.
