What a beautiful loco. Loved these "mountain class" engines. Always did the Adelaide > Mt Lofty / Belair runs Mon to Fridays, at about 17:45 >18:00. I used to admire them from my house as they ran the hills.
What a fantastic piece of footage, I enjoyed every second of it and seeing 75 class Brills in their natural revenue duties has made this S.A.R train buff's day. Ps loved the very brief snippet of Port Wakefield Station.
The Brill rail car at Snowtown might have been bound for Wallaroo. There is a quick glimpse of one at Wallaroo might have been the same one. I have a couple of films of the Sayonara Mikado weekend (700 class farewell) nearly ready to post in the next week or few.. Saturday to Angaston and Sunday to Victor Harbour it was. There is a Brill in the former mentioned film up near Tununda working also. We didn't stop at Port Wakefield obviously. Travelled from Victoria to get these films. Looking at the map, it seems as if we must have done a figure 8 that day as we must have returned from Balaclava via Hamley Bridge in the dark. The person in the yellow shirt getting up on the loco at one of the photo stops is Dean Harvey one of the organisers. He had replied to a letter I wrote and he told me that if I wanted to see steam in South Australia I'd better hurry as it was being taken off and being got rid of.
There is one more to post very soon - 718 to Angaston the previous day.. That has a good shot of a Brill passing and also a quick gllmpse of a Brill in the distance at Angaston
Big thank you for sharing. I was on board...5 years old. Still have my dad's slide photos from the day. This film explains a lot of them now. Thanks again.
I thought the line terminated at Moonta? I am a Melburnian but I have driven to Wallaroo many times over the last 6 years. Its sad that this line is gone. It should've been a great tourist train over the summer months. Much better than getting a bus up there. I've noticed that South Australians are very lazy when it comes to retaining historic railways. Clare line shouldstill be open as well as the Mount Gambier line. Bloody disgraceful people here!
"South Australians are very lazy when it comes to retaining historic railways" That seems to be a universal complaint among rail fans. So many other sites, buildings, vehicles, etc are cherished like a gift from the gods and protected at all costs, but for some reason a lot of people don't take railways as a serious candidate for preservation. I guess it wouldn't be a huge deal if any of them came back after they were removed or scrapped.
20 were proposed but only 12 were completed when SAR changed tactic and went diesel. Great video, certainly one of those gems that need to be watched over and over. They were the stuff long since gone from South Australia.
Great footage - and thank you for sharing - it is amazing for those of us who never got to see any of these lines operational! Really appreciated!
Glad you enjoyed it

This class of steam locomotive was the finest steamer I ever rode behind. Strong, seemed to be dependable and good looking lines too.

Fantastic footage. Beet to wallaroo station about 4years ago
Sadly 526 has since been sent to the scrap heap. 523 is at NRM and the older 520 Steamranger.

Is it 526?
Yes it is. One of the ten that were cut up and scrapped. Great pity!
Thanks for that correction
