  • In the dawn of the 1990s, a striking dancehall artiste stunned the world with his baritone voice and raunchy lyrics. He went on to break records and became one of the greatest toasters in the history of reggae

SHabba was so popular, he was one of the first Jamaicans I saw on tv. He had songs in movies, tv shows, performed on the late night show, Arsenio. That was unheard of back then.

And then came Buju Banton. I remember hearing a radio DJ doing a soundclash between Shabba and Buju and thinking that Buju won, but the years have gone by and Shabba Ranks continues to hold his place as one of the top dancehall performers of all time.

I started listening to Shabba in the mid to late 80’s. Up until that time I was heavy into roots reggae, Bob Marley, Culture, Albert Griffith, Jacob Miller, Israel Vibration, Gregory Isaac etc. I would play Shabba for my friends kids who were all into hip hop and they did not like it and would often tell me to take it off. Then he signed that deal with Epic and was fairly heavily promoted. Next thing I knew those kids who rejected him years earlier were telling me about him and thought he was way cool. That’s show biz I guess.

Shabba is the best. He also influenced Puerto Rico's Reggaeton music. According to music scholar Wayne Marshall, instrumental elements from Shabba Ranks’ song “Dem Bow” have been used in over 80 percent of all reggaeton songs dating up to 2008.

The longterm success for Shabba has proven him right. I still can play loads of Shabba Tunes at a dance nowadays but only very few Ninja Hardcore-Tunes from that era.
If you play for the ladies, sooner or later the rudeboys gonna be around too, the other way doesn't work out.

@Reggae Appreciation Society I saw, forgive me - I hadn't had the chance to scroll through. How about something on the new wave of Roots Reggae in both the US and West Indies? Alborosie, Chronixx, Groundation, SOJA, etc. Also we need one on the one and only Mr. Winston Rodney - Burning Spear! Who I might add is my personal favorite and I am BEYOND thrilled is touring again! Also one on Israel Vibration! One of my best friends growing up was Dr. Dread's nephew! He got us in to meet and see Eek-a-mouse and Toots Hibbert. Got to drink Champagne w Toots on his birthday - AMAZING Memories! Great work and keep on 🔥!

He was cancelled for a reason - his homophobia. People with similar thoughts and leanings learn the hard way- through the pockets. The financial hit I the surest way society can send messages to artists and performers it disapproves of.
Of course, he tried to scale back his comments through artful PR but the damage was already done. Many artists and creatives suffered similarly.
But the evidence in lyrics, statements and attitudes was clear enough to convince enough fans to pull their support. Lesbians and gays are human beings too, and they were being extrajudicially murdered and harassed worldwide. It was time to take a stance.

For me it was Sugar Minot, nobody touches Pumpkin Belly or Sleng Ting, loved Shabba though in the early 90s, he was nuts, Roots and Culture was our jam, loved that Murderer line Tiger and Ninja were nuts too, the original front tooth gold tooth Don Gorgon.

I’m almost always disappointed when I view these retrospectives & I see the great collaborations artists produced with other artists, of the same genre or not. There’s hardly ever any continuity of pooling the talented for future ventures and networking that COULD provide a basis for economic progress, if managed successfully & consistently.
King Shabba had no real reason-other than being discriminated against-not to have translated easily into musical forms & venues that would’ve provided him a career-long livelihood!!! I despise how the industrial aspect of music throws people away. Then it lionizes mediocrity as if it’s just so much better to be ordinary, mundane, trite & pointless.
    Long Live SHABBA Ranks! 🎤🎶🏝🇯🇲

Neede Eye pum pum ..bust Shabba ...but i cant help but to think if his career would have the same trajectory if Major Worries had not passed. WORRIES was next inline behind Admiral Bailey from Jammys studio. Respect to Shabba as none of those outfits were goochie nor prawda nor balance seaga nor kalvin kline nor tommy misfigure nor versachy ...none ! But was made by a tailor ...Why nowadays artists must wear and support brands when we're just as creative ?

Hip-hop is not a offshoot of dancehall dancehall is a offshoot of hip-hop
Ska and reggae is an offshoot of rhythm and blues
Toasting was copied from American DJs
Sound systems was created to mimic American jukebox
