Tacomaholic, how many miles did you have on that transfer case oil? I change mine every 60,000 miles. I've got a 2004, I bought new. It's got the 2.7 liter, manual transmission, 16 inch wheels and no power windows or locks. I've never had any problems with it, just routine maintenance. I did replace an oxygen sensor. That's the worst problem I had. It has been a solid truck for 14 years. She's been through a few blizzards hunting antelope in Wyoming. A lot of memories are in my truck.

a crush washer is exactly as its meant to sound. It crushes as you torque. that's what keeps you from stripping the threads. for a dollar each, PLEASE REPLACE EVERY TIME! edit: Avoid the steelership at all costs

I realize this video is 4-1/2 years old, but that $135 price at the dealership isn't all that out of whack when you consider they MIGHT be using the correct fluid, versus the 75W-90 you (and most people) use. If the transfer case on the Tacoma is like the one on the Tundra, Sequoia and LC/LX, they are spec'd to get SAE75W gear oil, not 75W-90. This gear oil is not readily available anywhere and would be a special order for any parts store and you're likely not getting it in 2021/2022 or 2023... This stuff retails at the dealership for $60/quart and Blauparts sells Ravenol SAE75W for $17/quart right now. Not knocking you, just saying that substituting 75W-90 for SAE75W isn't "the same".
Yeah the oils were pretty good. This was the first T-case oil change since purchase though so I like to keep it on a regular schedule. You never know with how these things come from the factory sometimes.

I've got an 09' 2.7 4wd Manual Taco, I've recently changed the tranmission fluid with Redline MT 75w-90. SInce it's a manual (and I'm guessing a transaxle?), will the MT-90 oil be good for the trans fluid, front differential and transfer case? I'm a bit new to changing these 2 or 3 oils, and just trying to change them all accordingly. I'm doing my rear differential soon too, per your video! Thanks!
Thanks for watching! There are slight differences between manual/auto, 2.7/4.0, etc Tacomas. Check your owner's manual for the specific fluid needed for each applications. I believe the 75w90 will be ok for your rear diff though.
How much was the oil? Stealership said 134.93 and you said save 110. So was the oil and washers like 25 bucks? Was that the same for the rear diff? Love the Channel!! Have a 2011
Some great advise here!! I own a 2017 Tacoma SR5. Should you use a 75w-85 gear oil as per the owner's manual?? Or can you use a high quality 75w-90 syn. gear oil for the front/rear diff and transfer case??

@@stephenmaurer7008 I'm not sure on the 3rd gen autos, but the 2nd gens autos don't have a trans dipstick so there's a weird procedure used to check the fluid level that I'll cover in my vid.

Greetings Frank. The tcase also uses 75w90 and I while it doesn't need the limited slip additive I don't believe it's going to hurt it .... might want to ask a pro mechanic though just to be safe.

Don’t want to take any chances with diffs/transfer case/transmission fluids being contaminated with water, with that said I’ve decided to change all the fluids. I dive a 2011 tacoma sport 4.0L V6 4x4 with an ARB rear locker. My question: does the diffs and transfer case use the same oil? Do you have a video showing how to change transmission oil?
Hey David sounds like a fun trip! For my 2014 the front diff/rear diff/transfer case all uses the same oil. I'd assume the same is true for a 2011 but double check your owner's manual. I believe the transmissions on the 2nd Gen Tacomas is sealed so I'm not exactly sure how you go about changing that. Are you going to post some vids from your trip?
do you add oil until it comes out of the fill hole ? If you overfill the oil will it overheat the transfer case ? Is the oil for the three transfer boxes the same ? thanks
Yes you pump oil in until it starts to dribble out of the fill hole. Putting too much oil it could damage the parts over time. You can use 75w90 oil for the front and rear diffs and the t-case for 2nd Gen Tacomas.
It's pretty hard to overfill it considering it's at the right level when it starts slowly draining back out of the fill hole. Not sure how you'd manage to cram more in there without spilling it out in the first place.
Are those crush washers? I’m just curious if I really need to get new washers for the transfer case. I just got back from the stealership for the front and rear washers but totally forgot about the transfer case.... doh

is it a must to use the toyota transfer case oil in my 2017 trd OR? i bought the redline 75w90 gear oil for the transfer case and i am now having second thoughts with all the research i have done. i saw you used the mobil 1 75w90 but you have a 2nd gen. think it'll be ok with the redline?
Hi Michael, thanks for watching! The only HP related mod (aside from stickers) that I've done is a Flowmaster muffler. So I'd guess just a few HP/Torque over the standard 236 for the 4.0 V6.
Toyota manual says every 30k miles for the transfer case. All of the fluids in your vehicle breakdown over time which can cause damage or premature wear on the components.

Wow you are oilcoholic too, those oil are still in good condition. Heavy oil specially synthetic are good for many miles from 30,000 to 50,000 miles.

~12.99 for a quart of Lucas. So say $80 for front, rear & Transfer case. That's the only real expense if you have the tools already.

Thanks Stephen! 75w85 is certainly fine, but many (myself included) run the 75w90 without issues since it's alot less expensive.

Remember to use a GL 4 oil in a Toyota manual transmission and not GL 5 oil.
My owner's manual says GL4 or GL5.

According to the owners manual differential uses 75W-85 and transfer case uses 75W-90. I'm not sure if a makes a big difference

I have not changed my trans fluid yet but that is on my maintenance "to do" list and I will be making a video about. Looks like a fairly simple job.

Yeah should be a very similar, if not identical, process. Not sure what the torque specs are though.
