@@oysterfleet5669, Toyota care is for 25k. And they only cover 10k oil changes. Maybe the dealership paid for the 5k changes. My dealership is giving me free oil changes every 10k up till 100k. But I still change it myself after 5k
for anyone prepping to do this, I'd suggest having a larger 1/2" breaker bar and a 24 mm socket for the oil filter housing because those things can be over torqued by the dealership, at least mine was. this was the solution I'd found on tacoma world, if anyone runs into a similar thing
the "mechanics" they hire at dealerships are the worst of the worst. That's where you go to get your money stolen and shit broken. Gotta do it yourself.

Excellent video. I just got a 2023 Tacoma and Maintenance Required light came on, didn't know why. Now I understand it's the Oil service reminder from factory computer settings. The dealerships had just serviced it at 3k so the actual oil change would be at over 6k, but vehicle was just doing it's factory reminder. Thanks for being so thorough on oil change procedures and reset. Go Tacomas!
I truly enjoyed this video along with the bloopers. I hate it when videos are made and they remove any incident that may happen (Oil catcher). Thanks for sharing Sir.
Great video, I'm 64 years old, and I only rotated tires on one car out of the Many cars and trucks I have had over my lifetime. What I found out is yes it made them wear the same, but it wore out all of them at the same time, so I never rotate tires anymore, why? Because I don't want to have to buy but 2 tires at the same time rather than all 4, It's a lot cheaper to buy 2 tires over 4 or even 5. I don't believe you get more life out of your tires by rotating, but you do get more life out of the set that way because the back usually wears out faster if you have rear-wheel drive and spin your tires when you take off or the front if you have front-wheel drive. And I never included my spare tire in the rotation, which honestly is probably a good idea, especially if they all match and they are all new. I'm going to try it your way on my new Tacoma and see what happens, I don't need a new spare tire, just something to get me to the tire shop if something happens on the road. I do carry a can of fix a flat and a mini air compressor with me everywhere I go, I even carry a tire fix it kit I bought from Amazon in all my cars and trucks so if i can find the whole I can just fix it on the road. I do a lot of backpacking and white water canoeing. Right now I have a dodge ram 2500 Toyota Tacoma and a Honda CRV which doesn't even come with a spare tire at all it just the can to fix a flat lol. I'm going to try it your way this time and rotate my spare into the mix until I get my spare worn down to almost time to buy a new one and see what happens, keep up the good work.
I highly recommend getting an aftermarket oil filter housing, because mine broke trying to take it off myself due to my last maintenance person at Toyota cranking it too tight. Plus the aftermarket one, it's made of better material.
I had the oil geyser out of the same drain pan. Twice! Thought it was a fluke the first time and was ready to move the pan around the second time (Didn't help). I blamed it on the 0-20 thin oil as the 10-30 oil in my other vehicle never geyserd out like that with the same drain pan. I have since put an Oil Splash Pad in the pan and no more Geyser.
Great video! Love your Taco in that army green, and those wheels and tires! Not a bad video, basically what I do with two differences. 1) Shop vac, connect to the inlet pull vacuum while you take off the the drain plug, you don't get any oil out till you shut off the vacuum. Lazy way to keep clean. 2) Do you not have grease joints on the Drive shafts anymore? I have a 2nd gen Tacoma and I lube them up every time I change the oil. I also do 5k miles or 6 months which ever comes first (use to be 3 months or 5k miles, but I don't drive near as much with my new job).

I learned on the first oil change to use a large Tupperware container about 5 liters in volume to catch the oil. It’s about 5” tall on the sides and there is no splash what so ever. Im going to def buy the skid plate. The stock one isn’t too hard but def heavy and make your shoulders hurt after. Thanks for the awesome video! Subscribed. Edit: it is a 10liter container. 5 is way too small haha.
So, I'd recommend watching this video about this topic. Long story short, the aluminum CBI skid had a pretty dramatic failure I feel is caused by removing steel cross-braces when using an aftermarket skid plate. I now use the Toyota TRD front skid and it's been excellent. ua-cam.com/video/0_mebxQ5uBg/v-deo.html
I've used oil stabilizer in the past on older vehicles with well over 100,000 miles. I wouldn't recommend oil stabilizer in a new or low mileage vehicle. But do your own research and talk to a mechanic you trust.
Wonderful helpful tips and guide. I have a 2018 Toyota Tacoma SR5 3.5L V6. @ 36,000 miles I have a question and wanted to know if the same things you use work for mine as well or should I get a different kind of oil? Second question is what kind of transmission oil fuild do I use to change and what other things do I need to change also? It's hard to find real loyal mechanics so I came across your channel and hoping to get some help all the way from: Juneau Alaska
I’ve got a question for you Jason. My dealership uses Mobile 1 full synthetic oil when they change the oil and filter. If Havoline is better oil, why do they use Mobile 1 ? I get free oil and filter changes for as long as I own my truck, (which is about 15-20 years or 250K to 300K miles). Toyota says to change the oil and filter every 10K miles but I still change it every 5K miles, so I buy the Mobile 1 full synthetic oil and filter and crush washer, so Toyota charges me $40 every time I’m paying for it. My 23 TRD Off Road is about a year old with 8,500 miles. We’re going to MT this weekend for vacation, so I’m sure after returning home it’ll have 10K miles on it. Since our dealership uses Mobile 1 full synthetic oil, will it hurt my 3.5L to use the Havoline for the times I’m paying for the oil change? I appreciate your channel and content.
I have that exact CBI skid and shops have complained they can't access many things and asked to remove them. I told them not to touch. Have you needed to remove yours for any specific service?
@@JasonExplainsThings Yeah I always just remove the two access doors before an oil change, but at my 60,000 service the tech said "your differential fluid looks good." And I wondered how it's possible that they knew that without removing my skids. I actually have the full skids from CBI, which covers up more stuff. 🤔
Mmmmm🧐? Thank you for the tips on the oil drain tool kit, I am going to purchase one. The filter removal sockets purchased thus far have been junk. And I do use the same exact oil. Thank you for finding the cabin air filter location, I was wondering about that. Your tire rotation plan is clever. Though, what about the transmission fluid level, and you forgot the differentials. Thank you and motor on!
@@JasonExplainsThings how do you know that the current oil level in the transmission and differentials is correct? Do you have faith in the factory's procedure, and or in the dealership pre-sale inspection? Have I checked mine? You ask. NO! I feel neglectful in that respect. The all too (new practice) common practice these days is to have a sealed transmission, no dip stick. We customers are the dipsticks now days for allowing this practice to continue. And I have not checked the diffs due to blind faith that they got it right at the factory, foolish I know. This will change as soon as I return home from my journey. No, I am not driving my Tacoma currently. Now what about that transfer case, I have forgotten all about it, I have become such a slacker. 🥺
That is too long for sure. Most professionals believe Toyota and others do this as a marketing ploy to say the cost of ownership is low. DIY 5k oil changes are a great way to save money and keep your vehicle running great for hundreds of thousands of miles. I'd check out video from The Car Care Nut on this topic. He knows way more about it than I do.
I torque the oil filter cap to 18' lbs and oil cap plug to 10' lbs....every 2 days I see a small drip on my oil filter cap. Should I tighten the oil filter cap some more?
Where do you stand on low mileage vehicles? Service at the 5k mark or based on time? I work from home so my truck does not get up to 5k miles very quickly.
my 4 cyl tacoma has a traditional oil filter that i like to hand tighten. my camry has the canister style and i gotta say, i really appreciate the simplicity of the tacoma. the canister style seems like a bad design in comparison.
What size tires do you run? Also I have the same wheel set up as you. But… seems like you can install a full-size spare under the bed. Can you? I always heard that you need to modify it.
Thanks for the videos. Been watching them like crazy. I'm waiting for my very first 4runner which is on a shipping vessel right now to the states. So i know Toyota has their service package and from what I've seen, most New Toyota owners are doing the servicing on their own including a 1000 mile break in oil change. Did you happen to do the same? Are you planning to use Any of the 2 year toyota service?
We did use it for the 10k and 20k service for the 4Runner… and did my own oil changes at 5 and 15k. So by all means use it, but I highly suggest doing oil changes every 5k miles. For the Tacoma I’m currently at 8500 so I haven’t had them service it yet.
Can you get away with using a 3-ton low profile Pittsburgh (20in max height) on a 3rd Gen trd off-road? Or is there any advantage to spending more on a long reach Daytona?
Do you have TPMS on all 5 tires? I am thinking of doing this for my truck, but wondering if I only have 4 TPMS, when I put the spare to passenger rear, it will throw a code for the sensors.
It will but there’s a way around it: Toyota Tacoma TPMS Tool: Reprogram After Rotating Tires or Swapping Wheels! ua-cam.com/video/NkXqJP2j5CI/v-deo.html
Already done! I have an oil change video from last year you could check out. Tire rotation and inspection would be the same as this video: ua-cam.com/video/cUPUzN7h9zU/v-deo.html
No! Definitely not. The 4Runner is still here. My wife drives it so my default vehicle is the Tacoma. But we did a new suspension and winch bumper on the 4Runner this summer. And more stuff with it is planned.
Thank you! But K&N filters let 30 microns of dirt through the intake. Not good for sensors. Best filter is WIX 3-5 microns. Techron should be added the last tank before a oil change. Not after a oil change.
Thats why i won't us K&N. Yes they are better for performance and longevity of the filter itself but not for the longevity of the vehicle as it lets more dirt through.
Do you have any trouble with you spare tire wheel rubbing up against the undercarriage and ruining the outside wall of your tire? I have the same trd wheels and have some toyo open countries and found that rubbing was a problem
@Jason Explains Things I'm glad I saw your video lol. I bought everything for my 1st oil change and would have been a bummer to find halfway thru the process I'm missing the drain bolt gasket lol
Great question. Here's my answer and a video I highly suggest watching. Essentially 5K is infinitely better for your vehicle long term. The 10k interval became a thing predominately to market lower cost of ownership... and problems usually don't manifest until after a vehicle is out of warranty. This video is from Toyota master technician about why the 10k interval is so bad for your vehicle: ua-cam.com/video/TJhFAwFv-O0/v-deo.html
@@JasonExplainsThings thanks! I previously watched that video which is why I posed the question. I will 100% change it every 5K. My Tacoma is currently at little over 11K miles driven total and dealership is refusing to do the oil change, since there’s 5K remaining on the oil change interval, and it’s still in the free courtesy service period- currently 5K since last oil change. Do you recommend I change it myself immediately or let it ride out to 10K this time only? Especially since the truck only has 11k miles total. I’m assuming there won’t engine damage this early.
Last time I was at the stealership they quoted me $65 to replace the cabin filter. I politely said "f that" I'll do it myself. LOL

I just discovered your channel and planning on getting a Tacoma in Aug. Would you recommend Lucas oil stabilizer, or other Lucas products.
I've used oil stabilizer in the past on older vehicles with well over 100,000 miles. I wouldn't recommend oil stabilizer in a new or low mileage vehicle. But do your own research and talk to a mechanic you trust.
@@JasonExplainsThings thanks.
Yep, the engine oil would be the same. Haven’t looked into transmission oil yet since I’m only a 14k miles currently.
@@JasonExplainsThings
Ok, thanks 😇👍
Your link is for 12mm lug nuts?
Mobile 1 is great oil too. No issue in using it.
I have that exact CBI skid and shops have complained they can't access many things and asked to remove them. I told them not to touch. Have you needed to remove yours for any specific service?
For a front differential service you would need to remove it… but not for an oil change.
And this ladies and gentlemen is how its done
Wait a car manufacturer did something nice and made a cabin filter super easy to check!
Do TPMS sensors automatically reset to the position on tire rotation ?
Yes, but if you rotate the spare too, I believe it will require a reset.
Trans fluid and diff changes are more of a 30k-40k interval. When the time comes I'll definitely do those.
My Toyota care only covered 2 oil changes! They said it's synthetic so only needs a change every 10k miles
Might be worth checking.
@JasonExplainsThings I will Thank you.
Where do you stand on low mileage vehicles? Service at the 5k mark or based on time? I work from home so my truck does not get up to 5k miles very quickly.
I’ve heard a good rule of thumb is every 5k or 6 months. Some say you can stretch that to a year if you don’t drive much.
my 4 cyl tacoma has a traditional oil filter that i like to hand tighten. my camry has the canister style and i gotta say, i really appreciate the simplicity of the tacoma. the canister style seems like a bad design in comparison.
They went back to a spin on filter for the 4th Gen. 👍
Great job. How many tons is your jack?

@Jason Explains Things Thank you. New sub
Fumoto valve instead of drain plug...it is safe. .it has two safety devices to keep the splashing around.
Yeah I’ve heard good things. 👍
Good vid, but I have always just done front to back on my tire rotations
What size tires do you run? Also I have the same wheel set up as you. But… seems like you can install a full-size spare under the bed. Can you? I always heard that you need to modify it.
265/70/17… so only oversized by 1 inch. Fits in the spare spot just fine. From what I understand a 33 will fit.
Love that front hood guard, where did you get it ? Looks awesome !
Thanks! It’s from AVS. Here’s a link: amzn.to/3JfCsno
@@JasonExplainsThings thanks brother, Love your truck! Looks great!
You should tell people how to reset the tire tpms system when you rotate the tires
Good tip. I'll add that to the description.
@@JasonExplainsThings Thank you! appreciate your insight!
I love this video
Thanks Jason, you just saved me $100.00....
Dude you went to Yakima to buy your Tacoma? I had to look it up to make sure. I almost worked for them.
Do you live around Yakima?
I’m in Central WA. 👍
Sweet truck
Pro tip, put a shop vac in your fill spout and the oil wont rocket out when you pull the plug. :D
Interesting idea
What brand is the hood deflector
Can you get away with using a 3-ton low profile Pittsburgh (20in max height) on a 3rd Gen trd off-road? Or is there any advantage to spending more on a long reach Daytona?
I use the full height of the jack all the time, but you can always throw a block of wood or something in to use the shorter jack.
That’s what I used to do.
Ok the TPMS tool you use in the video is one I was looking at getting myself. Do all 5 tires have TPMS on your truck? Or just 4?
Is that oil better than amzoil
Do you have to do anything special with the TPMS when rotating tires?
There’s a procedure to reset them that I linked in the description.
Is there any reason why you can't install the smaller O ring while the housing is out of the car?
That’s a personal preference. For me it tends to fall off when you’re screwing it back in.
link to bug deflector front hood?
How hard is it to change oil pan gasket. Seem to be seeping oil. Not a bad drip. Maybe I should tighten the allen bolts.
I haven't done one on a Tacoma yet. From what I've seen it's a rubber gasket. Likely not too hard.
Where did you get your bronze badges my dude?
Hey! It’s actually an OEM “trail edition” grill. And the wheels are the same color/paint code.
Nice job 👍.
Great video! Could you do the same video for 4Runner?
Already done! I have an oil change video from last year you could check out. Tire rotation and inspection would be the same as this video:
ua-cam.com/video/cUPUzN7h9zU/v-deo.html
@@JasonExplainsThings thank you, Jason!
Just trying to get caught up on your channel. Did you trade your 4Runner for the Tacoma ?
No! Definitely not. The 4Runner is still here. My wife drives it so my default vehicle is the Tacoma. But we did a new suspension and winch bumper on the 4Runner this summer. And more stuff with it is planned.
What oil to use on the O rings? The new engine oil?
New or old. Doesn’t really matter.
Thank you! But K&N filters let 30 microns of dirt through the intake. Not good for sensors. Best filter is WIX 3-5 microns. Techron should be added the last tank before a oil change. Not after a oil change.
Thats why i won't us K&N. Yes they are better for performance and longevity of the filter itself but not for the longevity of the vehicle as it lets more dirt through.
you came up with that all by yourself didnt pal?
@@BenState Through years of research
please cite the 30 micron and sensor link.

Do you have any trouble with you spare tire wheel rubbing up against the undercarriage and ruining the outside wall of your tire? I have the same trd wheels and have some toyo open countries and found that rubbing was a problem
Hey there Kevin, no not at all. Beyond the wheel getting dirty it hasn’t gotten damaged.
Did the new gasket/crush washer for the drain bolt came with the kit or you bought separately? Thanks in advance
Bought it separately. Link below. They come in a big bag so I'm set on drain bolt gaskets for several years. :-)
@Jason Explains Things I'm glad I saw your video lol. I bought everything for my 1st oil change and would have been a bummer to find halfway thru the process I'm missing the drain bolt gasket lol
Is the 10K oil change interval correct or should it be every 5K? Both dealership and manual says 10K with full synthetic but I hear conflicting info.
Right now there is kitty litter all over my driveway thanks to that oil pan.
😂
Question for anyone. I was looking for this type of oil and couldn’t find it. But I did find the havoline pro DS. Will this work the same?
Yeah that would be just as good. They just asked me to promote the other one because it's newer. I've used both.
