This drummer's unusual doublebass drum groove is most consistent.... coupled with his hand solo proves phenomenal independence of hands and feet. You don't see many drummers with this skill. Any drummer worth his salt would know that. Indeed major respects to him....and sad for all the trollers here. That's one for Terry Bozzia.
He’s a genius - Bozzio belongs in the company of the greatest composers and instrumentalists of this century and the last. Anyone arguing that point doesn’t know what she / he is talking about.
I had the privilege of seeing him perform live and up close and personal at a drum clinic doing his melodic drumming. . He is so good he is on other levels. I'll never forget that drum clinic.
Terry Bozzio's approach to drumming and kit set-up seems to evolve in the direction of making the drum set a melodic instrument. One thing for certain he is one of the most innovative modern drummers I've listened to.
Most original musical drummer ever! I would know he taught me back in 1980 to 82,then went on tour with Terry and getting to watch and learnn so much! He's also the best teacher! Love his style and utter heart when he pounds his drums! !!!
JC,in 1983 i had a best friend and drummer who i told about Terry Bozzio's playing on Missing Person's Spring Session M album. He just scoffed at him and said it sounded more like an electronic drum kit. I disagreed and said that even if it was,he was still playing it and it sounded extraordinary to me. Fast forward to 1988 and him and i are in Hollywood CA picking up some new gear from guitar center and who do you see on giant posters plastered on the walls inside?...Terry Bozzio. I looked at my drummer and friend and said...'musta been one hell of an electric kit but it looks acoustic to me. I knew Terry Bozzio was special. I so envy your experience with him and happy for you being able to see it all.
This guy makes me realize that with all the years of playing and learning I’ve done. I’m still so inside the box with how I think about music. Even with all the jazz playing, metal, fusion, marching band. All that. There is still so much to learn and experience. And I’m 42 now.... damn I feel old
Amazing independence and I just love the way he’s tryna get loose with that left shoulder movement. Such a pure and honest expression of his personality thru music! 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾 BEAST!!!!
I saw him live a couple of years ago with the huge kit; It was inspiring.... Terry's never been afraid to be unconventional. He intentionally goes where no drummer has gone before. Terry is perfectly capable of doing a conventional monster drum solo...he absolutely has the chops, but he chooses to be unique. Good on him for taking the road less traveled!
This is no doubt one the most important, beautiful, legendary drummer's exhibition I have ever witnessed! The algorithm was right on the money with this one! Terry Bozzio is fantastic! Thanks for sharing!
I saw him doing this composition in 1998 in Gothenburg. I just hade started to listen to Zappa and when I saw that the ex Zappa drummer was going to play in Gothenburg I just had to take the train from Stockholm! The cymbal part here is what I think what really puts him in a league of his own. Too often drum solos is just a chopping matter. But Bozzio is turning the drumming to something completly different
I like how he has a melodic approach to the kit. That's one thing I like about this solo and something that I like a lot about Simon Phillips as well, they have themes or motifs in their solos. This solo had some parts that remind me kind of like Japanese taiko drumming in some parts. Wish I had that hand/foot independence.
brilliant . just brilliant. i could listen to Terrys compositions all day . what a visionary. in these times an absolute relief to hear his music. its pure energy and emotion.
Glad to see Terry getting love here seen other videos and all people are doing in comments are bitching about the size of drum kit and him not using all toms and cymbals in those songs, I’m mean yeah those songs don’t require them.
Thanks for editing the description - I deleted my previous comment - thanks for caring about musical art. This is SUCH a high-quality video on every level, thank you!!
Terry Bozzio Would be a amazing Count Dracula his face reminds me of Bella Lugosi he should try out for a Vampire movie he would kill it like he does on the drums
This is definitely the B rig. Still brought the crazy China stack upper deck . How I wish I could take some lessons from him. A true master of the art form
I saw an interview where Neil Peart talked about using dance shoes, (basically ballet slippers) so I bought a pair of cheapies. NIce. I like 'em. I guess the next stop is the army surplus store for boots.
thebarak.....the point behind the overall increase in the quantity of drums is because Bozzio loves the challenge of Melody as a means to take his compositions further. A true Melodic instrument like the guitar or piano are naturally designed to have that option, but the drums rely on the next best thing - pitch - and the more drums, of course, the greater the range of pitch available and, effectively, percussive melody!
@@2earache That may be the theory, but many of those components sound very similar, especially the cymbals, so the visual impact is at least part of his goal here.
Jeffrey the Barak.......Hmmmmmm! I’m not sure about the ‘visual impact’ having any degree of importance here unless an audience member is just there for the ‘show’ and not as a qualified musician reading between the lines of the overall composition. Even the cymbals have a reason to be there and to be placed where they are. Each one has a specific sound, vibration, length and type of tone, and there is without question a broad pitching attributed to them. Just as a fundamental aspect to a standardised cymbal, there are 3 tones which can be captured by striking it at different points and without a doubt using a drum stick, mallett or even with the hand. For a greater reference point to the use of percussion and it’s broad qualities, I suggest you listen to Edgard Varèse’s particular composition which definitely influenced Frank Zappa’s career path - and in turn, Bozzio’s, who as you know spent many of his early years working for Zappa.
Master musician. Sounds like an entire group of Tibetan monks having a jam.
Yeah! Extremely melodic.
@@paradiddle16 !
I second that ! "Strabo" is not able to listen to Terry!

@@musicM0VESme I saw him at West Coast Drums in a Clinic, also with Jeff Beck at the Greek theater, amazing talent.
Instead of playing the hi-hat left foot is on bass drum, that's how he gets that double bass groove. Ain't no thang but a chicken wing.
The pattern he’s playing with his feet is so consistent it sounds like an entire ensemble

Agreed! Hes approach to drums is so diffrent. Did a reaction on this piece: ua-cam.com/video/zp7xvi4CZi0/v-deo.html
Jesus.... his base drums have their own base drums. :0
lol
terry Bozzio, genius of the drums
This composition is pure art , It has power and sophistication
I don't even have the words to describe what I just saw and heard. Impressive.
This is not a solo , this is art & music in itself !

My favourite drummer. This is how drums should be played. Not only rythm... but also melody :)

Same we all are in comparison to Terry you aren’t alone!
Wetton, Zappa and Jobson gave direction to Terry's need for percussive meandering...:) His work in both bands is extraordinary.

The first Double beast drum solo, white olatungi
Terry is one of the greats of our time. He is such a beast. Baby Snakes
What can I say about Terry that hasn’t already been said. He is in a league of his own ,one of the best of the best .
Yes, clearly one of the best🥁🥁🥁
The Black Light Syndrome album absolutely blew my mind.. I knew all his fills by heart. Such a big influence on me.
Their second album, Situation Dangerous, is equally mind blowing.
I got here via Missing Persons, via Zappa... Wow, this guy is next level, and from deep left field. Awesome!
That's his backstage warm up kit.

A true master of the Avant Garde' Drumming approach.
So many cymbals, it looks like an alien invasion
They sound like an alien invasion too lol
The one and only, Terry Bozzio
I don't think I'll ever be this impressed by a drum solo ever again. My hats off to you sir!
I helped set this kit up at MI in 1996. Full size trucks worth of shit. Great independence and a nice guy
Whole melodic approach.
That is just nuts. Terry plays like a freaking octopus back there.
That ostinato tone is killer

looks like an ancestor of the current mangini set. Great drumming of Bozio
I see he's playing his small kit here. Ha. I always assumed his mammoth kits were a gimmick - but by golly - he's a fabulous musician. Love it!
