Here you can watch the greatest drummer ever. He influenced a lot of drummers and he has an amazing ability with the instrument, it's something magical. The other guy is Buddy Rich.
Can't argue that. Not even Bonham, Peart, or Collins truly compare, nor those who preceded Rich. Rich was...well, like Geoff Tate...in that he was in a whole other dimension in his art.
Ronnie Verrell was the drummer behind Animal (and was one of Buddy rich's all time favourite drummers) he started with the Ted heath orchestra, and as well as the muppets (Jack parnell 's band were the studios in house band) also performed with the likes of Nat King Cole, Tom Jones and Shirley bassey) This really was two artists who respected each other demonstrating their craft.
And it's really lovely how Ronnie ''humbles'' himself when doing Animal's drumming to give that stomping caverman feel and simplicity most of the time (letting slip little snips of YOUCH! THAT'S WOW!) and enjoyed staying ''in character''. What made these guys so special was their never losing their love of organic natural HUMAN rhythm, and staying away from technical dry academic boring stuff like many of the modern jjazz lot or progh/metal lot. Still playing for their teacher those guys! lol. They mostly could all read to save timemin studios or when arranging for band leading, but beyond that, they kept it human and organic. Beatiful work!
Well I mean, Floyd can literally blink with both eyes. Animal only blinks with one unibrow. These guys can blink, move their pupils, obviously move their mouth, it’s amazing how much spirit and personality they give with the movement of some fingers. This is why I love the muppets!

Anyone wondering how this was staged: Ronnie Verrel was the other drummer, and his kit was set up across from Animal, facing Buddy and Animal. That way, Buddy could still sort of see what Ronnie was doing but make it appear as though he was watching Animal. The rehearsal took 30 minutes, and this was shot in one take.
From experience, when you are "supposed" to interact with a puppet, you very soon forget the puppeteer and start to REALLY interact with the puppet. I guess the same goes for Muppets...
I saw Avenue Q where you actually saw the puppeteers on stage as they played out the performance. I soon forgot there were humans. But when I saw the Lion King, there was no sense of their being animals. and thats why the live action film of the lion king flopped compared to the cartoon. Not even Beyonce could save it
You know it! From what I remember reading this was a recreation of a drum battle between the two; Keith vs Buddy. Which Keith won. Wish that battle was filmed. What great things we could watch if only somebody had the foresight.
@@boataxe4605 Buddy Rich vs Keith Moon. Did you ever see the Muppet Show with Animal & Buddy? Dig it up on YT. It was a parody of that contest that they really did have (BR vs KM). At the end Buddy surrendered his sticks to Keith. It really did happen in the UK. Anyone out there lucky enough to see it live? I don't think it was recorded :( I only read about it in print in a book I bought in early 80s.. I love Keith's drum solo on his TV special. Don’t know if this has been mentioned below , I have read several times that Animal is based on the Late Great Keith Moon. I look at Animals facial expressions and it’s pretty uncanny. Plus if you ever listen to Keith on albums you can ALWAYS hear his distinctive scream in the mix!
Just watch old footage of Moon bouncing around while he plays. Animal is pretty much a carbon copy. Of course, there's also Animal's insatiable appetite for any & all types of drugs. However, I don't think Animal ever ran a dude over with his car. If he did, Kermit at least kept it out of the papers.

.......but Animal is still my favorite.
Holy Crap you’re right! I didn’t notice and I’m a wanna be drummer....thats’ probably why...I didn’t notice because there was NO DIFFERENCE in the sound.......
@@johnkruton9708 Yeah, it's truly insane how easily and casually he does that. I've played for years, and I've tried traditional grip a few times, but it's not as good and doesn't sound the same. He's just THAT good.
It's not every day I see my new favorite video on UA-cam, but today is one such day.
I did not know that. Thank you. Also kudoes to the puppeteer for mimicking the rhythm so well that is look like Animal is the one actually playing.
I've seen this a dozen times. Never gets old.
Buddy and Animal have got to be THE greatest drummers EVER!
Can't leave out Gene Krupa!
@@danielbass2895 absolutely
The reason I am a drummer girl. Buddy Rich and Muppets…such good times…
Like a good punch to the face, buddy rich makes those drumsticks snap on and off of the drum heads. That sounds always gives me goosebumps.
I remember this broadcast on TV way back in ‘80 I think, what a great duo, Buddy and animal together
I;m a frontline healthcare worker. I rewatch videos like these to keep me going. Be well all!
Thx man! Hope all is well! Take care
@@timvisterin Thank you, but I'm a woman lol. BE WELL my friend. :)
@@nursemedic17 Sorry, Thank you Miss! :-)
@@timvisterin :)
to quote a famous drummer "Dums!Drums!Drums!"
The drummer doing animals part must've been like "Im jamming with Buddy Fucking Rich right now"
Animal was my dad’s favorite Muppets. Brings a smile to my face and heart 😺
i love the part where animal picks up the drum and throws it at him
Channeling Keith Moon.
Why??
I remember this when I was a kid in the 70s!
Absolutely 2 of my favorite drummers ever.
I love how Buddy is watching Animal like he is actually playing! Perhaps the real drummer was just off stage?
Just think how it'd be being THAT guy, lol.
Ronnie Verrell was the drummer playing Animal.
From experience, when you are "supposed" to interact with a puppet, you very soon forget the puppeteer and start to REALLY interact with the puppet. I guess the same goes for Muppets...
Animal *was* the real drummer. :-D
I saw Avenue Q where you actually saw the puppeteers on stage as they played out the performance. I soon forgot there were humans. But when I saw the Lion King, there was no sense of their being animals. and thats why the live action film of the lion king flopped compared to the cartoon. Not even Beyonce could save it
A drumming legend....and Buddy Rich..
Oh WOW, simply fantastic! Thanks a lot for uploading and sharing.
Best regards luck and health.
I believe Animal was crafted after Keith Moon...
Keith Moon was known to scream while he played.
You know it! From what I remember reading this was a recreation of a drum battle between the two; Keith vs Buddy. Which Keith won. Wish that battle was filmed. What great things we could watch if only somebody had the foresight.
@@richardcampbell2261 It may have been a tie, I love Moon but I don’t think anyone ever topped Buddy.
It's the one with the aquarium drum set. :) It's on YT also.
Keith Moon was capable of polysyllabic speech.
Two classic drummers right there. In all seriousness, Rich was absolutely incredible.
Whooee... while The Muppets may be returning to our screens in a new series, it's sad to realise we will never see anything like this historic piece of virtuoso drumming from the late Buddy Rich.
Say what? If so they will never be as brilliant as Henson/Oz. Check out the Swedish Chef doing his popcorn solo. Masterpiece.
Fun Buddy Rich story: BR would often cross his arms and refuse to play if Frank Sinatra counted the song in too slow.
I'll bet he only got away with it once...You don't f**k with Sinatra....
Frankie couldn't hold Buddies stick bag.
Back when TV was worth watching.
I've never seen someone hitting the plates that way, absolute legend
You should see my mother in law at a buffet!
Hey oh!
@@AR-cp5dz 🤣😆🤣😆
Love the new commercial with Animal in the attic! Buddy Rich was amazing.
animal! you ready?
KILL!!!KILL!!! DRUMBATTLE DRUMBATTLE!!!! :D
Back when Ludwig was the king of drums !
I love Animal drum-offs! I loved the one he had with Dave Grohl.
Grohl is not a drummer. He is a singer / songwriter / celebrity that cashes in on Cobain's genius, and, occasionally, tries to convince the world that he plays the drums.Enter Buddy Rich. He was a real drummer and showed everybody else how it's done. Grohl is just a C+ student that needs to take some extra lessons from Animal. Extremely overrated as a drummer.
@@thejollyjoker187 💯 that drum battle had a million cuts and edits, it was so embarrassing to watch
Greatest drum battle, EVER!! The bass drum on Buddy’s head from animal was a nice touch!
He’s really trying to beat a muppet, giving it everything lol 😝
I loved to do Animal&Kermit with my dtr when she was a kid. We had the "Woman! Woman!" And she say, "Animal !" DAAA? Sit...SIT...back...BACK! ...Down, DOWN... and she would just crack up!!
I think there are more similarities between Animal and Mick Fleetwood.
Two of the most awesome drummers in history!
I would've liked to see John Bonham or Neal Peart vs Animal
Buddy Rich must have been in the Matrix. His sticks looked like Neo fighting Mr. Smith. Maybe because of speed vs frame rate, "But thats what make it so intense!" (Armageddon movie quote)
Oh wow! I didn't know this existed. They say that Buddy Rich is possibly the greatest drummer of all time. I'm on season 4 of the Muppet show now. He must be in season 5. Can't WAIT to see this episode! Animal literally stopped drumming and just watched him. I have never EVER seen Animal do that :P
The first time I saw this I was 10 years old and it made me want to learn to play the drums. So, thank you Animal and thanks a lot Mr. Buddy Rich!
WTH people...over 157,000 views and not a single like? Let me go first then. This is a great piece that I have yet to see anywhere on YT yet.
I would've loved to see the drum battle between Animal and the greatest drummer of my lifetime: Neil Peart.
One of the coolest characters to this day. Him and Oscar the Grouch are the best!
In1973 Buddy Rich actually battled with Ginger Baker, who was the inspiration for Animal.
A always thought Animal was based on Keith Moon.
All of Animal turns into a blur when he "drums," not just his sticks. Always got a big kick out of that.
And the animal roar.... arhhhhhhhhhhhh
