Easily one of the most overlooked musicians. He’s more than a percussionist and drummer. He’s his own orchestra. His technical ability is insane and he has the musicality to keep it interesting.
Thanks for all your comments & compliments! I am using pintech midi triggers on each tuned drum. that goes into 6 Roland TMC-6 units, then into m-Audio midi -usb routers and into my mac using Reason for a sign-wave pure tone of the note each drum is tuned to. that helps the melodies come out more clearly. i apologize for the slap back echo (that came from a live mix room mice i guess!)
+Terry Bozzio Hi Terry!Do you know what really amazes me about you?Of course your incredible talent but first and foremost the fact that when I hear you playing It seems to me like listenig to a whole orchestra...In my humble opinion, your use of the drums is unheard-of because the instrument is seen under a totally different point of view...new and innovative. You're a great source of inspiration,I really admire your work and in particular I love what you did during your collaboration with Mr.Zappa.Respect!
+Terry Bozzio Just saw this. Incredible!!!!! Far beyond great drumming. It's great musicianship. You are a true artist. Thanks for the explanation. I was racking my brain to try & understand how you achieved that sound.
Terry Bozzio has contributed something very unique and innovative to the world of drumming. It's not about the size of the kit. It's about breaking boundaries and unlocking the melodic potential of drumset playing. Terry's playing should put an end to the myth that drummers aren't real musicians. This is the kind of thing that can inspire drummers to think different about their player. So I say to Terry Bozzio; thanks for making this available on UA-cam for free.
Hello ! That is it : He is telling a story! That is artfull. No one is closed to Terry concerning that point. THE TROLLS SHOULD LISTEN AND LEARN ! No REASON to talk more- I will listen one more time. The Purple Love Assistant We should respect the music!
This is way beyond "normal" drumming. It''s more like speaking, talking. I'm not a musician, sorry, but I feel totally attracted by that man's intellect and musicality. A true artist!
"Terry's brain is wired so differently from most....err...all other players.... He does things we're not supposed to be able to do on a percussion set. I'm glad to be alive to witness his wonderful genius...."🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁
I saw Terry at Drum Center in Minneapolis and it was the best musical experience I have ever had! And I have been to 100's of concerts. It was truly brilliant. Cut clear to the soul.
I usually don't like monster drumsets like this because they seem gimmicky but seeing this one where all the toms are tuned to notes to play them like a pitched instrument is actually super cool and musical
John Bergeman I went to a drum clinic he had.He was demonstrating how he knows to use a drum stick to play a "sharp" or a "flat" note on any drum and he has taught himself to do it with both hands. So from the amount of toms you see him using in this video he can get 3 notes from each tom.If you can ever get to see him at a drum clinic do it.It's really worth the experience
Terry you changed my life in October 1982. I saw you with Missing Persons, and that single performance has cast a long shadow over my life for the last 35 years. I saw you in 1984 in Long Beach, Ca, 1985 in Mesa, Az, 1995 (or thereabouts) in duet with Chad at SMU in Dallas, in a clinic in Tempe around 2002, and finally in solo performance at the Musical Instrument Museum here in Scottsdale, around 2011 or so. Thanks for giving me and thousands of other drummers someone to look up to and admire.
One of the best drummers of all time. He has mastered the technique of tuning his drums so his solos and studio songs are always in key, It doesn't mater if its Jeff Beck, Steve Vai, Korn or Frank Zappa. When Terrys behind a band he elevates even the most talented players up a notch
Terry is not just a drummer, he is a true percussionist. I've been to 2 of his clinics and I was thoroughly impressed, and not to mention that he is a really nice person as well. The fact that he chases different tones not only from his toms, but also from his cymbals, sets him above the bar.
I love listening to your music when I'm laying in bed at night I'll play this in surround sound sometimes. it brings back memories from when I spent time in South America Amazon hanging out with the ticuna tribe near the border of Peru, Brazil and Colombia. thank you for everything that you do you are truly an inspiration. I hope to cross paths with you one day.
Awesome! I remember back in 2000 Terry came to Texas to do a clinic and the first thing he said to the spectators before he started the clinic was: “ I bet you all are wondering what this contraption is.” I was wondering how the heck he got all of those drums and percussion in that music store! Mesmerizing performance and he signed my Pro Shop T shirt. Amiable guy and modest. Terry has truly marked an epoch in drumming history. Cheers!
Terry's Bozzio solo's are so unique. Most; if not all, drummers just blast their drumkits. They look more like athletic endeavors than actual music. Not here, this is music, amazing. I've been listening on and off to Terry Bozzio since his Drawing the Circle album. Only now do I discover new layers to that album. Keep up the good work, you're embarrassing everyone out there.
Dr Bozzio You are a True Percussive Genius and Have Been and Forever Will Be One of My Favorite Drummers ☺☺😎👊💯💯💖 Thank You for This Upload My Most Amazing Musical Big Brother ☺☺💖💖💯
I've been inspired by Bozzio's playing since seeing him in Halifax with Frank Zappa in circa 1981. That was an awesome night and during the solo Terry did some tuned percussion that blew my mind that included simple recognizable melodies, i forgot what they were. Bozzio is a pioneer of inclusion of tuned percussion in the drum set and continues to extend this today with amazing musicality.
Terry Bozzio is a thinking man's drummer and one of the best in the world, he can not only play in a musical orchestral style but he can also compose and arrange complex pieces that will make your jaw drop. It doesn't get any better than this guy, he is a true legend and as good as they get
I grew up in drum corps and bought Bongo Fury in 7th grade and the guy you met (Rob Carson) was my private instructors nemesis in solo competition from the other corps down south of us. My son now instructs mallet percussion for them and several schools. Thanks for all the great notes you gave us to learn.
Your resume speaks for it self, this falls in to a spirit realm of drumming to me,healing capacity, you are set aside.as long as what u have is used then it's not to much.one of the icons of my generation, thanks for inspiring
This is like the coolest thing ever and just so refreshingly different! Aside from how beyond complex Terry’s drumming is it is his feel and passion that I love the most! I naturally attack when I play also but I still think of Terry when I get a solo break and go in to attack mode, huge inspiration!
That's the most beautiful drum solo I've ever heard. It is akin to drummer-induced meditation. That's the best I've got. And I too am a drummer. Floored at the sound.
Lmao! I “played drums” for 10+ years. I grew up in the 70s-80s, and always knew Terry Bozzio was a drummer extraordinaire who played with Missing Persons, and Frank Zappa. Yet, I never listened to him. I loved Neil Peart, Bill Bruford, etc., but just never got exposed yo Terry Bozzio. If I’d had internet and youtube it would’ve been a different story. Thirty odd years later I finally have an opportunity, and I’m blown away! Bravo, man! That’s crazy good! You da man!
@@terrycraig3468 Bullshit and you know it. Everything Bozio does is in simple time signatures. Bozio would not be able to play a song off Hemispheres to save his life. If you were actually better than a mediocre drummer you would know better.
I was late in getting into Terry and his F'n outadisworld drummin' chops. My first introduction was Spring Session M with Missing Persons and I WAS HOOKED! What a FANTASTIC album which also includes some of the BEST BEATS I have heard. I may be nostalgic but here we are. I regressed a bit and listened to his time with Frank Zappa and this solidified my suspicions that Terry is an unstoppable force in the drumming world. Terry's playing with Steve Vai and Jeff Beck along with many others has been a drummers delight through the years. I will admit to stealing a few tools from the box and some modification of others but you know what they say about immitation. This new stuff is beautiful, melodic, difficult to replicate and addicting. I have no complaints about this approach to percussion, only compliments. LOVE the huge set and all that comes with it, I mean ALL! Thank you Terry for the many years of innovation and inspiration.
I just recently reheard that album mainly because I wanted to hear how cool his playing was and how some of his rhythms even happened in this funky new wave band. Also to really listen to the sounds in his custom electronic set he built for Missing Persons. Some of those patterns he played were so razor sharp !!!! "Now is the time" comes to mind. Anyway this album is so underrated .
Amazing show last night in Oakland at Yoshis. Took my 12 year old son to see the master. 3rd generation drummer and his face never left the center stage during the 1:45 performance. Terry, most drummers slow down at 65, you just seem to get faster and more precise. If 1/3 of the people in the world could harness 85% of their Brain functions like you do, we'd be part of a better world.
Terry seems to have went down a very unique path from most of his peers. For the most part I didn't get it, but here he demonstrates his undoubtable talent and delivers a very creative and musical solo. Would love to hear him do some more of this stuff.
Terry, you are my favorite drummer by far,i just saw you In my hometown, and your old stomping grounds,OneWorld Theatre in Austin. What a treat!please come back soon!
Back in the day, I had only known him as the drummer for Missing Persons. Then I went to the "Fire and the Fury tour" with Stevie Ray Vaughan & Jeff Beck. Terry was playing with Jeff. He was phenomenal! I mean everyone was there to see some guitar playing. But his playing was such a huge presence that it still sticks in my mind to this day, And was one of the highlights that night. If you ever see him live you'll know what I mean.
You are killing me man. I only wish my dad were alive to hear you. Maybe he's the reason I found you.:) The healing in percussion was the basis of his medical research. I was thinking of him when I accessed the article on Neuroscience and Drumming. His technique was published but I don't think anyone ever thought to record the audio in the 1950's although some patients had told him that the sound was as good as the feel. He would have called you the drummer from another world and you are! I don't even begin to understand what you have going on there but I can't wait to listen to every recording of you I can find.
Terry you are amazing!!! I first heard you playing on the spring session M album back in the 80’s,still one of my favorite albums to this day and your drumming on that album still blows me away today when I listen to it😊I’ve been a fan of yours since then, thank you, you’re one of the greatest drummers ever!🤘
You have to come to a point to understand the God-given individuality that comes from Terry Bozzio in the sense that who would even be inspired to imagine such a type of enormous drum set with sound components that he invented...let alone be able to make sense of playing the way he does...not even to mention the immense technical proficiency that he has been gifted with!
I remember going to see Jeff Beck sometime in the early 90s and not knowing he was touring for Jeff Beck’s Guitar Shop. When the stage opened up it was apparent this wasn’t just any drummer; the kit was this monument in the left corner of the stage. I immediately knew it was Terry. It was a KILLER show with Terry conducting a percussion workshop on display.
Probably my favorite piece. Very colorful and musical. Some of your other compositions are a bit mundane, but this is pure aural beauty. What a great journey.
Absolutely stunning! At this point I can't even call you a drummer or percussionist. I'd have to say master engineer of that machine that probably costs as much as an American house. I asked my wife and she said I couldn't get one but thank you for the videos
Having been a fan of Mickey Hart and a lover of world music, I am quite fond of Terry's versatility and treatment of cultural influences. I can easily listen to Terry play all day long. What a gift to hear such diversity of sound.
Hello Terry .I'm blown away that you are ansering people's comment,s First of all you were my very first love by the way you played everything. You were a sweet heart when I met you once. God has blessed you and don't ever get down by any negative feedback. Easier said that done we human beings all know I love many drummer from Vinny to Keith carlock my old friend to Bruford,Virgil.Dennis ect. Bottom line IS that YOU Terry ,oh yes thank you God for ,#1 humble person that I felt from whenever you were asked questions and when I met you .You were always aGentalman for one and have you all seem him live like with Jeff Beck.I was sitting write behind you at the Garden when Beck was playing with Stevei Ravon or how ever you spell it. And I have also sat 6 feet away from Keith carlock for about 8,years straight when he was with Wayne Krantz at the 55 bar in NY amazing but my point is all is real Terry Bozzio lovers know .and when you are blessed to know , you know Terry, the energy that you put in to those live Jeff Beck songs live ,forget it I can go on and on . Your solos and playing and locking in with Patrick Ohhern onl Live in New York and laying down live with Missing Persons and soloing over US Drag and just the Spring session m Album came out . Every song on the incredabal album those songs and groves were write in every body,s face. Even the last missing persons album that got sadly no recognition for. You also sang your but off and the harmonies that you sang . All were perfect.shurly know that love don't come here anymore or whatever it was called .It was a beautiful day song Zappa The sleep dirt album ,the ocean is oh gosh I just blanked out now UK live .the Danger money album and the many others black napkins studio Album Group 87 Hs Ha..my point is that know buddy back then was playing like you ,period like even on w Walking in La .words , noticeable one's that in your face killer groves over and over and your harmonies were off the hook Bad streets.ect that will never get old and should all those Missing Persons albums should still be on the radio ... You always felt every note and You were s rock star also than Right The roomer flighing around for years was no no body play,s flam rolls around The set like you did back then and even now . Sorry I could go on for ever, the Brecker brothers but you been there And have done tons of things and you had that killer double Bass that i olwe all to you
You can retire now sincerely yours Chris Brennan you have no done do much and not neerly do people know of it God bless you Terry and thank you for being you for Decades .
That bass drum and hi-hat ostinato is everything here! Bass expecially has outstanding tuning and reverb, a perfect tribal context for your mystical storytelling. Thanks for the journey :)

I assume he is your husband. He is amazing! A good friend turned me on to this video & i will share it even tho your his tour is over. The music business is alot different any more and i hope he earned lots of $ touring because he definitely earned every penny.I can't imagine how much he has practiced over the years.
Fucking WOW man. Just amazing and fabulous. Thanks Terry Bozzio. I'm a big and always amazed fan. Question though. Just how the hell are any members of the audience not even casually shaking their heads? Hopefully tapping their feet or hands or something. I might be in the privacy of my living room but I can't help but move. Just WOW.
Very good! You have a nice set of gongs behind you there. I will try to catch you when you are in largo later this month. Very different sound from missing persons days😉
I love how melodic your drumming piece is here Terry. Really cool. The imagination & concept of building that kit had to be almost as time consuming as writing an album! ha ha. I play a 5 pc kit & only go for intervals between my toms but you inspire me to take that chance & work on getting that 14" rack to an A for instance instead of just a Perfect 4th over the 16" Floor Tom. Thanks for that man.
That is insane. So do you create a sample of a tuned drum that's triggered thru the midi?

John Bergeman I agree. It actually does justify the amount of drums he has

Thanks for understanding. Alot, of people commenting that he's pretentious and pompous for having that size of a kit.
I know what you mean but if I had the money I would buy a pointlessly large kit just for the hell of it.
Hello John !
Terry here is doing that what PRINCE wanted us to do : Respect the music!

Sometimes I rewrite a comment several times...searching for the correct words...amazing...
Thanks for that!
Thank you for being so dedicated WOW
Terry you are amazing!!! I first heard you playing on the spring session M album back in the 80’s,still one of my favorite albums to this day and your drumming on that album still blows me away today when I listen to it😊I’ve been a fan of yours since then, thank you, you’re one of the greatest drummers ever!🤘
we sure loved your performance last night in westland Mi. Was like the best drum lesson ever. Wish we could have met you. maybe next time.
Im scared that i one day am going to read online somewhere "Terry Bozzio dead after drumkit collapsed and fell on top of him" lol
yeah some day them gongs will fall on him
Thats what i fear.... lol
Why would you say something like that?
Is this the real life
Is this just fantasy
Caught in a DRUM slide
No escape from reality
It’s a joke, lighten up. That isn’t going to happen.
Undoubtedly you are the emperor of melodic drumming!!!
"Oh how I would LOVE to be this man's tech and roadie"!
- No one ever
That kit is fixed to a stage and is likely never disassembled...
LOL... as soon as I opened the vid, I thought "fuck being his drum tech"... then I scrolled and you said what I had thought
I would. Call me - I'll be there ;O)
@@timschnabel292 Bozzio would have to supply the steroids and NoDoz. I mean, that ain't exactly "Punky's Lips" on the setlist these days.
You would have to show up a week before the show to set it up in time.
For him to be able to have such diverse coordination and independence is amazing this is what makes him so much fun to watch
Beautiful!
wow this is incredible.. excellent job man
I saw Terry Bozzio play in person at a benefit. He is awesome to watch. I also play the drums with sticks and hands.
Thank you Terry! Since I was a baby I haves loved percussion music. I can't play for shit but i know greatness when I hear it.
Incredible complex and Beautiful at the same time. Amazing Bozzio, a Dinosaur.
Probably my favorite piece. Very colorful and musical. Some of your other compositions are a bit mundane, but this is pure aural beauty. What a great journey.
He has his 4 way coordination down that for sure i used to have a vhs of his playing back when i was in high school
that was a beautiful piece of music
Absolutely stunning! At this point I can't even call you a drummer or percussionist. I'd have to say master engineer of that machine that probably costs as much as an American house. I asked my wife and she said I couldn't get one but thank you for the videos
Having been a fan of Mickey Hart and a lover of world music, I am quite fond of Terry's versatility and treatment of cultural influences. I can easily listen to Terry play all day long. What a gift to hear such diversity of sound.
Loved the flow of this song Terry. The rhythm just draws one in.
You must soundtrack a feature film...so needed!
Terrys drum tech must be the hardest working guy in the business👍. Great piece of music😀
Magnificent, always !! - thank you so much for the share \\ |☆| //
Purely melodic drumming no ifs and or buts this is a composition!
The architecture of your kit is a thing of gothic beauty and magnificence. Accordingly it looks as though it took a hundred years to build.
All were perfect.shurly know that love don't come here anymore or whatever it was called .It was a beautiful day song Zappa The sleep dirt album ,the ocean is oh gosh I just blanked out now
UK live .the Danger money album and the many others black napkins studio Album Group 87 Hs Ha..my point is that know buddy back then was playing like you ,period like even on w Walking in La .words , noticeable one's that in your face killer groves over and over and your harmonies were off the hook Bad streets.ect that will never get old and should all those Missing Persons albums should still be on the radio ...
You always felt every note and
You were s rock star also than Right The roomer flighing around for years was no no body play,s flam rolls around The set like you did back then and even now . Sorry I could go on for ever, the Brecker brothers but you been there And have done tons of things and you had that killer double Bass that i olwe all to you
You can retire now sincerely yours Chris Brennan you have no done do much and not neerly do people know of it God bless you Terry and thank you for being you for Decades
.
That bass drum and hi-hat ostinato is everything here! Bass expecially has outstanding tuning and reverb, a perfect tribal context for your mystical storytelling. Thanks for the journey :)
One of the most unique drummers out there! 🙂
this heartbeat-like background adds a lot!
Superbly on the pocket as usual... so good to listen loud its motivation music for your spirit.☯🕉
This guy is awesome, incredible drum set.
Of all videos of him playing this giant drum set, this is the first time that i can really enjoy. Took me long time, eh?
Love your work!

Looking very forward to seeing you in October! Do you do signings after your performances? I would love to have your signature on my snare drum :)
I assume he is your husband. He is amazing! A good friend turned me on to this video & i will share it even tho your his tour is over. The music business is alot different any more and i hope he earned lots of $ touring because he definitely earned every penny.I can't imagine how much he has practiced over the years.
+Dabone Marrow FYI- he's touring again in the US and has a show in Oakland so far, but there will likely be more Cali dates
It makes me sad to see that this is a 2014 tour schedule, and not a 2018 schedule.
Just WOW.
i´ve always carried this mental note "listen to terry bozzio when someone shows you a good drumer".
There are so many amazing drummers. But Bozzio is beyond Insane.
I heard drum sessions on big kits but this truly a musical piece !
Legend.Melodic.Bozzio is a gem.
Very cool! Terry plays the drums like a melody instrument.
Best in class love the playing !!!
Very good! You have a nice set of gongs behind you there. I will try to catch you when you are in largo later this month. Very different sound from missing persons days😉
brilliant. absolutely brilliant.
On this weeks edition of Hoarders....
Im sure that behemoth cost more than my car. Hell, it might even turn into a car. With it's own built in bangin sound system!
@@xeroabyssdclxvi2570 more than a car? It costs more than my house...!!!
Lmao I think he's missing a cymbal or two
Timinator62 😂🤣 nice! 🙂
Definitely a minimalist drum set there
This makes me feel like spy on a mission in the jungle. Awesome.

Or playing fetch with your dog on Saturns rings.
U r an asshole
@@richiemitchie6818 your asshole
Hahahaha
I love how melodic your drumming piece is here Terry. Really cool. The imagination & concept of building that kit had to be almost as time consuming as writing an album! ha ha. I play a 5 pc kit & only go for intervals between my toms but you inspire me to take that chance & work on getting that 14" rack to an A for instance instead of just a Perfect 4th over the 16" Floor Tom. Thanks for that man.
