- Transcription of John Coltrane's chorus "Blue Train".
Transcribed and played by Benoît Sauvé with the Recorder*(Flûte à bec/Flauta Doce/Blockflöte).
*Keyless recorders with double-holes upside/down(Recorders for lefthanders)
Amongst the various work methods that I have experimented with in improvisation, there is one that I have found particularly beneficial: transcribing choruses from recordings.
This series of videos reflects part of the work done on a few of these amazing solos.
Why transcribing solos?
Although studying the various scales and chords, and the relations between them,is essential in learning to improve, putting these theoretical notions into practise can be very laborious.
This is why making transcriptions of actual solos can be so useful for training aural perception and instrumental technique,as well as allowing us to analyse the styles of great jazzmen, enrich our musical vocabulary, and thus help develop our own musical ideas.
Coolest guy in 6th grade.
Fantastic talent - still can't help thinking "Snape in his recorder phase".
Jo Spargo Brilliant! I laughed so hard.
Just can't believe a recorder can be played like this - the man's a god.
this 50 year old solo is an example of the timelessness of a jazz genius
this guy is right on top of it.. phenomenal.
What in the fuck, that's awesome
Wow!!! Amazing...
oh great!! just Genius...what a technique and speed.virtuoso
I've played trumpet in a jazz band and loved all these tunes but also play the recorder. YOU SIR HAVE MADE MY LIFE.
Great Work! Both the transcription and the playing. On recorder no less. Your idea about transcription as a learning technique is absolutely correct and has been used by most of the great jazz musicians.
Outrageous !! Really Great
Holy Moly!! Superb Performance!!
I wouldn't have believed it if I hadn't seen and heard it for myself. Pretty incredible!
That was fantastic!
Terrific. Makes me feel like I should be in a smokey jazz club listening to this. I like.
You are definitely the Man! Gotta see you live.
This is an amazing performance. Flawless execution. Matched Trane's articulation, tone, cadence -- everything. It reflects a massive amount of practice and hard work. Well done.
Great solo from a great master. Gosh you must've 'woodsheded' like crazy, but you nailed it! Terrific! It's not the instrument that has limitations, it's the player. Bravo! Harry, India
three words : OH MY GOD
amazing!
As written, one of the best ways to learn improvisation is by imitating the masters. This video does not only show superb virtuosity (who thought a recorder could do this?), but forces us to *truly* listen to Coltrane's solo. Despite this being a simple blues, it is uncanny what he could do. Most improvisations are a collection of riffs. The best improvisation is spontaneous composition; here is an example. Thanks for a wonderful video!
Fabulous playing! Thank you for posting this!
Great! I don't think I ever have heard this kind of jazzy recorder. Well played. And "electrified"! Fun too.
Brilliant! Thanks for posting this -- a lovely achievement.
Unbelievable ! Dude you are the Man !
Simply awesome!!! Great job man!!!
Fantastic, Benoit!
(So nice to hear you play again!)
Sincerely,
Bill McBirnie
Holy %$#@!!!! Dude, that is totally unbelievable!! Thanks for the inspiration...now, off to the shed!
oh my god! the recorder being put to actual use!
5 stars just for that. I'd give you another 5 for playing Coltrane if I could.
wow!!! wow!!! wow!!! 5 thumbs up!
Great video and great transcribing and execution. Love it.
Fantastic!
Just incredible omg..
That's an incredible amount of work.
this is so awesome! you go dude!
This is insane! :D Very well done sir!!
Enorme !!! Mille bravo !
that's incredible, congratulations!!!!!
Bravissimo !!!!!
Great ability, especially given the fact that some sharp and flat note fingerings are difficult to make, eg:#g, #d, #a,/ Ab, Eb, Bb; low C etc.
Your interest in 'Trane must be a love supreme! Well done!
Incroyable!
Superbe!
This is sweet. Good job!
Amazing !
Bravo Monsieur ! cheers from brussels ;) Keep on jazz'in around.
the man who lives inside the orange! He really exists!!

My respects for an incredible artist! I have to say that his artistry is awesome and his taste great...choosing a Coltrane solo!!
Realmente extraodinario, es una locura.
this is by far one of the best things EVER!
seriously though, this guy rocks my world.
wooooorale! qué impréesionante!!!!
Man, u are insane!! sounds DOPE!
i'm speachless. and going back to work.
You make transparent how wonderful Coltrane was, mercy
This video inspired me to learn this song, though I'm not gonna tackle the transcription, I'm buying it somewhere else. If Benoit can play it that fast with the funky recorder fingerings, playing it on a tenor sax should be a piece of cake (he he)
YOU ARE AMAZING, AWESOME
pretty cool... never thought jazz could be played on the recorder!
Awesome! I need that.
impressionnant !
absolute king
This is what i want to do on my alto recorder. Great job.
Amazing!
you proved recorder as a possible jazz instrument.
I play sax and have tried the recorder.
Absolutely amazing!!
HELL YEAH! that must have taken some shedding - on recorder! props!

this guy is a monster - also listen to his transcriptions of 'skunk funk by Michael Brecker and Clifford Brown's solo on Donna Lee
Eric, this is fantastic, very nice and fun!
Incredible!! Great!! J.K~
Superrrrrrr
Awesome. When do we get Concertina da Camera?
Is that real? Unbelievable! I have to change my mind about this instrument! :D Amazing!
I wanna be the john coltrane of the recorder too!!!
you are amazing
regards
you definately have to stand completely skill to focus like that!!!! WOW!
God of recorder
bravo benoit sauvé
sounds great, now i'd like to hear u improvise a solo on the same tune taking inspiration from this trane solo
Brutal.
niceeeeeee
amazing!!!! whithout words, I play the saxophone and this solo is very dificult!!!! In the recorder impossibleeee!!!!
ohhhhhhhhhhhh muyy wenaa musicalidad...
Great great great! I've just heard your version of Pat Metheny song...... (Have you heard). unbelievable! Go on!!!!!!!!!
okay awsome, are their any recorder players who were mainly interested in jazz in the old days?
Dude you're awesome! Let's see some more stuff... And how did you learn such an amazing technique?
OK, OK, I spent some time in college memorizing and playing this solo on tenor sax.... many hours actually.. many many many hours.... I I hear a few differences in the way coltrane played it. For example: 42: extra gliss. 1:16:extra note. 1:55: extra grace note.
For adding those extra few notes, I deduct 3 fractions of a point from his perfect 10 score. Thus, a 9.7 in my book.
Hahaha, ok, all kidding aside, this guy is a freakin' monster! A genius of the recorder!
