    I have seen a number of videos explaining recorders and people tend to go off saying too much that it makes it all difficult to follow. This video is straight to the point and makes it all easier to understand. Therefore, this video was awesome learning material and I thank you a lot for creating this video. 👍👍👍

      Florentin Tise Plus just so you know that I am 57 years old born with severe hearing loss, the good news is that I have a new pair of hearing aids that have crispy clear sound quality. With this video you stuck with the same brand instrument to explain the difference between sopranos, altos, tenors, and bass which was more easier to understand. I am hoping by learning to play this instrument will help build a foundation to learning other instrument such as guitar. Thank you again.

    Just to be clear, the Soprano and tenor instruments are C instruments ie when all holes are covered the note produced is C. The tenor sounds an octave lower than the soprano. Alto and bass are both F instruments, so covering all holes gives an F, and you are playing a scale of F major. Bass is an octave lower than alto. Easy to check - play the lowest note on each instrument one after the other. They're not all the same!

    • @communityband1
      @communityband1 5 років тому +14

      I wish the alto and bass recorders would be treated as transposing instruments, just like we see with other woodwinds that don't read concert pitch. It seems a bit crazy to me that we ask recorder players to learn different note names for the same fingerings.

    • @zenarobinson3851
      @zenarobinson3851 4 роки тому +11

      @@communityband1 i'm really glad they're NOT transposing! i have perfect pitch, so it's a nightmare playing transposing instruments! (i know - it's a pain learning 2 lots of fingering, but for me, much easier!) :-)

    • @lorenamenendez6709
      @lorenamenendez6709 4 роки тому +3

      @@communityband1 what? why would they be transposing insturments? It's likethe human voices, each voices has its range. It doesnto correlate withthe voices because the recorder is much higher

    • @communityband1
      @communityband1 4 роки тому +5

      @@lorenamenendez6709 ...for the same reason that other instruments are done that way. Look at the saxophone family or the clarinet family. English horns, alto flutes, etc. With brass instruments, Bb trumpet, C trumpet, and Eb trumpet all use the same fingerings, but just read transposed music. It's the same with french horns. Bb baritone/euphonium. And actually, part of the recorder family already is essentially treated as transposing. When we play recorders that are tuned to A415, we don't read music that's written a half step down. We just play a C, a B comes out, and we claim that it's still a C because we insist upon saying that A is no longer 440, but 415. That's what transposing instruments effectively are. We could just as easily say that a Bb trumpet is really a C trumpet in A=392, or an F Horn is really a C horn in A=294. We DON'T say it that way, because it's far more practical to keep track of things and play together if we all decide to have a steady frame of reference with A=440.
      The idea that music notation should bend to the reader, and not the other way around, is something that recorder players already embrace. We readily accept treble clefs that are transposed by an octave, or switching over to bass clef for lower instruments so that notes stay on the staff to keep them readable. These days, essentially all music is written with notation software that makes transposing take nothing more than a click of a button. And that one click can result in a much better sight-reading experience for more players. Music engravers see it as their job to make the first-time reading performance as good as it can be, and this is one of the most obvious tools they can employ. This is an evolution that many other instruments have embraced, and I see no reason that recorder shouldn't follow. The best reason I can give you is that doing this will open the door for more people to play more instruments with less trouble. I see that as an excellent goal.

    I tried an Irish whistle, some years ago. It was a big one...about an inch shorter than a clarinet, in fact. But, the holes were too far apart. I really tried to get used to it, but, after a few days, the pain in my base finger joints was so bad, I couldn't hold a cup, or a pen and I had to give it up, weeks later, when the pain showed absolutely no likelihood of ever going away. It's a shame, having to give up something loved, but...it happens. Anybody who had that pain in their fingers' base joints would give up, too. I wish keyed versions of all such instruments were available, because I'd love to take up one of these instruments, and preferably the deepest I can find, then play without terrible pain in the hands. Thank you, for your video.
