- Transcription of Pat Metheny's chorus "Have you heard".Transcribed and played by Benoît Sauvé with the Recorder*(Flûte à bec/Flauta Doce/Blockflöte)
*Keyless recorders with double-holes upside-down (recorders for lefthanders).
Amongst the various work methods that I have experimented with in improvisation, there is one that I have found particularly beneficial: transcribing choruses from recordings.
This series of videos reflects part of the work done on a few of these amazing solos.
Why transcribing solos?
Although studying the various scales and chords, and the relations between them,is essential in learning to improve, putting these theoretical notions into practise can be very laborious.
This is why making transcriptions of actual solos can be so useful for training aural perception and instrumental technique,as well as allowing us to analyse the styles of great jazzmen, enrich our musical vocabulary, and thus help develop our own musical ideas.
I came like 13 years late just to give you a congrats my dude, you played and transcribed it flawlessly.
this really shows just how amazing Metheny's phrases are
Now I have heard Pat Methny's chorus
Un super bonhomme ! Ce Sauvé m'a sauvé !!!!!!!
Wow. Somehow, hearing the solo doubled makes it more legible to me, and I was able to discern some of the intervals that usually whizz by my ears. Great work. Thanks.
Once you start transcribing Metheny, you begin to realize the truly immense depth of his genius.
ooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, fantastic!!!

Very amazing! This is very difficult to do on recorder. This guy is a monster !

I am not sure if this is one of the best ways to learn improvisation, yet this guy is great.
Тему просто супер выбрал, под флейту подходит офигенно!
Idk why, but thats so awesome how you playing at 2:00 matches EXACTLY how Pat Metheny is playing it and it all blends together beautifully into this one part. Awesome transcribing man! :D
asombrosa tecnica de digitacion para clonar el estilo de Metheny
Cara tu é fera msm!

Dude you are sick ! I the best way !!!
Sick.
You are too much! Great rendition! thumbs Up!
Dude, you've got amazing technique and that's the first time I've heard jazz sound convincing on the recording. Do you play any of your own solos? Also, I didn't know it was possible to play recorder left handed!
it's... how to say... Well, I have just one word: AMAZING!
Steve Vai playing flute? Awesome, awesome job btw. Thanks!
O M G Super!

Very nice! Thanks for posting.
Greetings from Holland,
Vinnie
well, actually most video programs in existence have that feature, but yes, I see your point.
OMWW!!!!!!!!!!
Benoït, you are fantastic and so precise. Compliments!
May I make a suggestion?
Spyro Gyra, Access All Areas (1984), Conversations (Tom Schuman).
Looking forward to it :-)
SURREAL!!!!!!!!!!!! WOULD YOU SHARE OR SELL THOSE TRANSCRIPTIONS?
Of course that a left handed is able to play recorder. In this case there are 2 possibilities:
1- The camera is digitally "mirrored".
2- The recorder is specially built for being left handed used.
Plz look at the RE and the DO. The big holes are inverted, cause in right handed recorders we have the big hole of the RE and DO at the right. This guy has got it at his left.
I would like to know your process to learn this. Do you read the music or you just play what you listen ?
Are serious right now? Awesome
very good man! keep on the jazz way!
what recorder are you playing on?
what microfon do you use? is it built in for flutes?
Cool Cooler Coolest ....COLD? (Or GOLD) and it is a recorder in a southpaw. Great
He most likely learned the whole solo by ear and then transcribed it into music notation. After that, if he's not reading it while he's playing, he probably memorized. That how most big jazz musicians learn the solos of the people they listen to.
I think improvisation means being free from anything.
Transcribe sometimes helps, but it will also makes it harder
to being free. At least it took me a long time. I suggest not to transcribe your "most" favorite player. I wish I could explain in better English. Anyway , this guy IS great.
His website confirms that he plays left-handed on recorders made specifically for left-handers.
I have died and gone to heaven.
i guess you dont work full time hehehehehe amazing
Awesome solo in general but the lick at 2:14 to 2:19 has to be one of the funkiest lines I've ever heard.
je viens de remarquer que vous jouez avec la main droite en haut et la gauche en bas : est-ce parce que vous êtes gaucher ?
only if it also shows how much free time Pat Metheny has. more useful use of free time than playing with youtube!
Is that a flute I hear?
???????????????????
You are a monster! And all these comments just make me laugh with agreement. What an accomplishment. You should send this to Pat.
I don't know wheater Pat Metheny could do this vice versa.
great ! kamikaze !
metheny's tone actually sounds like a recorder anyway
there is a such thing as a left handed flute and sax...
