The ending of the title track about her apparent friend’s death(?) makes me cry every time. “You sang those high notes high my friend / I’ll sing the low notes in the end” 😭😭😭😭 like PLEASE

Makes me silently scream every time. I get obliterated to ash from those lyrics

AVAA, this is actually my first time watching your videos. Thanks for reading that passage from Kara's book, will definitely be putting that one on my list!

AVAA, I'm so glad you ended up listening to this one! I love the way you contrasted her past poetry to her current work, it really showed how she evolved her work

This & 'My back was bridge for you to cross' are my albums of the year, beautiful beautiful albums.

AVAA, the line if your fear is what comes first you’ll run away from love you deserve makes me think about how victims of abuse are untrusting of are loving relationships, and that untrust or fear can boil up and destroy a relationship

“If your fear comes first, you’ll run from the love you deserve” sounds pretty straightforward, though i’d like to think it’s spoken as a reminder after hearing it from a friend or former lover. AVAA

AVAA, glad you got around to my AOTY! Also, your instincts were right about "Lily," it's a friend-love song. I saw her perform it at a bar in Chicago back in March with the titular Lily in attendance, it was a very cute moment!

Are commenters allowed to suggest albums for this catching up series? If yes, I highly recommended Sprain's The Lamb As Effigy. I'm sure you will be captivated by its heart-wrenching theme and incredible instrumentation. A lot to talk about and unpack on that one. Hope you cover it, sir!
    Also, what does AVAA mean?

"If your fear comes first, you'll run from the love you deserve" sounds like all these videos of attachment styles you see on UA-cam by relationship/dating coaches. Sounds like she's giving advice to the avoidant type?

No, the song already has a “you” someone she calls down from space and gives reciprocates her fear. This album may be a lot of things but it certainly isnt preachy

AVAA!!!! Its here omg ive been waiting for this one since i listened to this album. I voted for this one, definitely gonna buy that book, i knew she was a poet and I read a few of the poems online after finishing this album as i loved it so much.
Btw “He wants me, he wants therapy” is such a cold line but it has these really pretty guitars and instrumentation behind it, i think its hilarious i love it.
Brain also might be a prequel to rat given the similarities “the only thing that’s cheap seems to be his dreams” and the opposite “sleep isnt cheap and your love is no currency, you’ve gotten tell me you’re ready so I can dream already”
why does the earth give us people to love made me cry, its so hard hitting especially when she sings about her personal loss, not just love but the loss of future and this could also tie into the fear she talks about in brain, she is afraid of losing more people she cares about. Its a little bit of a stretch

I'm pretty sure this album will end up in my top 5 for the year, but I know for sure that "Rat" is my song of the year.

AVAA Easily by favorite album of the year, I knew it instantly when it came out I listened to it on repeat basically everyday on the way back from campus to my apartment just at the start of my final college semester in St. Louis. God that was a terribly written sentence but I hope that it captured a glimpse of where I am at.

AVAA professor Skye. Id love to hear what you think of the Anohni and the Johnsons record, even if you dont get a chance to review. It's pretty singular in terms of 2023 releases. First classic soul protest record i can think of since Black Messiah.

AVAA! Glad you took a look at this! You should also try Diagnosis by Sen Morimoto. He's one of the major collabortors of this album. His album is more about dealing with the negative feelings thst you get from capitalism, and tries to put a hopefully or view on it.

Happy you got to this one, I would love if you did a discography retrospective on Father John Misty because I think his perspective on love (monogamy and polyamory) and capitalism make him one of the most interesting songwriters around and it’s fun to see his worldview evolve from album to album. In his first record he also has his metamodern novel “Mostly Hypothetical Mountains”. Idk I’m Kara’s age and somehow I really connected with all of this. You are the only critic who I feel really GOT his point on Chloë and made me appreciate it more. Anyways, thanks for all you do
