It is so rare to find middle aged men who truly respect and look out for music made my women, especially in Mitski's genre of music. I have loved her for so many years and it makes me so happy to see more people finding and loving her like I do! I appreciate your vulnerability at the beginning and all of your opinions throughout! AVAA, and 2023 AOTY by a far margin! My thoughts are super unformed at the moment, but I feel like this is the album where Mitski finally finds acceptance living in an inhospitable land, mind, relationship, and career. With her prior albums it really sounded like she was unwell and wrestled with suicidal ideations, where I think this time around she’s more concerned about what she’ll leave behind when her time comes, choosing to be a beacon of love while accepting the darkness and negativity that comes with being an artist wrestling with her vices, her toxic thoughts, memories of her failed relationships, and an unforgiving consuming public.
There are so many themes densely packed in this sparse album, but one I wanna fixate on is the theme of memory. When I think of all the people I loved in the past, a lot of my memories are tinged with melancholy and regret:
How I didn’t love a certain person the way they could have received it.
How I poured love into another person without it being reciprocated or appreciated.
How down on myself that I couldn’t be unconditional in the way I loved.
How I didn’t love a certain person enough or how I took them for granted.
How I let jealousy and unregulated emotionality taint something so pure.
And yet we play these memories over and over in our heads though they provide us immense pain because my love is mine all mine. Every song, every piece of art, every social media post, every UA-cam video, every family vacation is for the purpose of preserving and reliving the memories that we are living now, so that our (hopefully positive) essence can live on when we are gone. Because as flawed and as broken as we are, it’s good that we tried to use our limited time on earth to love each other and ourselves. And I think Mitski is showing us how messy and impossible and worth it that process is, and how it’s better to have a soul than to be as inhospitable as the land.
I’ll close with my favorite quote of hers from the liner notes that made me cry when I read it:
“I don’t have a self,” Mitski observes. “I have a million selves, and they’re all me, and I inhabit them, and they all live inside me.” Loving all of these selves does not yield the easy burst of a pop song. It’s the “long, complex, deep love, that you can never get to the end of, that’s always evolving, like a person. And there’s just no end to it. It feels like space travel.”
P.S. the opposite of a Neophyte is a Agent Smith-ophyte

First time on the channel and I really loved listening to your stories. There's something so genuine and down-to-earth to the way you recorded that made me feel really comforted. I love MItski's music but it is difficult sometimes to feel the sad more-bitter-than-sweet emotions so earnestly sung! My favourite track of hers is First Love / Late Spring and honestly I can very rarely bring myself to listen to it, because it is as beautiful as it is gut-wrenching! On the other hand, I've been listening to this album on repeat since release and it provides not an overly sad but somber and mellow space to sit in. My Love Mine All Mine is now tied as my favel! AVAA!

AVAA short answer for 30:51 is that violin and fiddle are the same instruments with the terms utilized in different contexts. A longer answer would include how both terms are utilized in Euro-American (Western) classical and folk (especially Irish-Scottish-French) traditions, how both were used in African-American musical discourse, and even how the fiddle was played by the Tohono O’odham (the indigenous Desert People that straddle the border of the United States and Mexico), Hispanic Americans of New Mexico and southern Colorado, and a Mexican composer of indigent Otomi descent

I think you'd be interested to know thAt Mitski wasn't born here, which might'Ve been mentioned in the comment section. She was born in Japan and spent a lot of time there, but hAs lived in like 13 different countries. So much of her Angst has Always appeared to be from that type of not belonging that is furthered by not being from the country she lives in(she moved here by herself when she was 15, which I think is metal as hell) and she doesn't consider herself to be from anywhere. I think having lived in so many countries with so many different ways of storytelling among other forms of art might be part of the reason why her music doesn't really sound like anyone else's. I've always heard her music(my favorite album is Bury Me at Makeout Creek) and felt like it had already been really important to me in another life. I think this quality is obviously a mixture of so many talents, but I think the living everywhere might help with that.

one thing i love about mitski (and also get frustrated over) is how her voice and the music are so well blended and complimentary and her themes are so interesting-- you hear a lyric, and you're still thinking about the lyric when it's on to another verse, and you have to stop and think, then start again. and read the lyrics again, and analyze, but then! the music combined w the newly comprehended lyric gives new meaning and emotion. So you listen to the album like 10 times and feel like you're still processing something grievous and so lovely, it's like a dream where your cat died in the swamps of sadness in the neverending story and you have to just trudge along thinking your stupid little thoughts and fearing forgetting things to The Nothing. all combined with the knowledge that you'd never write anything half as good, and that your stupid little brain will hear this album again in 2 years, and it will feel like a new album bc you were too stupid or at least not in the headspace or life-stage to REALLY get it before.
maybe I'm just young w not enough sticky life experience and regret to glue her impact onto myself (right at the cusp where music is going to start not being as good as it used to be, according to your calculations), or maybe I'm suffering brain damage from law school (thank God I'm graduated, 10/10 do not recommend; will now, according to theme of this album, *regret* forcing my education/prospects-of-career-stability/qualifications-to-do-stuff-I-don't-like-doing down my throat for eternity-- should have gone to graduate school to become a literature professor specializing in russian literature as the fates intended) but Mitski really just feels like depression's well of forgetfulness and the bright mania that comes through the numbness whenever a lyric pokes you in the nipple and makes you giggle. AVAA.
