How to Memorize ANY Number - Remember Long Numbers

    Remember any number using this memorization technique from "The Memory Book", by Harry Lorayne and Jerry Lucas. This is something I learned from an early hardcover edition of the book several years ago. I've never forgotten the system, and have used it to set bank account numbers and phone numbers into memory.
    Think of each number as a consonant SOUND, using this chart:
    1 = T, D
    2 = N
    3 = M
    4 = R
    5 = L
    6 = J, SH, CH, soft G
    7 = K, Hard C, Hard G
    8 = F, V, PH
    9 = P, B
    0 = Z, S, Soft C
    Commit the above 10 number/sound associations to memory.
    VOWELS (A,E,I,O,U) have no numerical value, and go between the consonants to form the word.
    The letters W, H, and Y are treated the same as vowels (except when H follows certain consonants, like "SH", "CH", or "PH".).
    Example: The number 7394 can be remembered with the word "camper".
    Explanation: 7 = Hard C, 3 = M, 9 = P, 4 = R, and vowels go between. "Kimber" is an alternative word for the same set of numbers.

    I used this trick in the 9th grade to memorize 60 numbers of pi for a contest. However, I forgot to write the 1 in 3.14_59, so according to my math teacher, I only got three numbers, despite getting the remaining 56 numbers correct. So the runner up won, and she only got ten numbers memorized. I'm still mad about it to this day.

      Well, if it still bugs you, maybe just take some time to learn a hundred digits and this time you won't forget the 1, so you can finally have some peace of mind. Or just focus on how you helped the runner up to have one of the best days of her life. We all know you had the trick down pat anyway.

    This is excellent, and a great share, it reminds me of The Sound of music a bit, though i know it is not the same method:
    Doe, a deer, a female deer
    (Re!) ray, a drop of golden sun
    (Mi!) me, a name I call myself
    (Fa!) far, a long, long way to run
    (So!) sew, a needle pulling thread
    (La!) la, a note to follow so
    (Ti!) tea, a drink with jam and bread
    That will bring us back to do oh oh oh
    Thank you very much for sharing us something that is so useful to you!

  • @WovenThorns

    When I was taught this, we called it the “body list” going from our toes to the ceiling:
    1: Toes - T/D
    2: Knees - N
    3: “muscles” of your legs - M
    4: rear - R
    5: Love handles - L
    6: Shoulders - Sh/Ch/J
    7: Collar - K/G
    8: Face - F/V
    9: Point (on the top of your head): P/B
    0: Ceiling - S/Z
    We used these for scripture references and I still remember verses from over 10 years ago because of tricks like this.
    Your video on this is my favorite demonstration of it though! As always your channel is the only one I have notifications enabled for. I appreciate the time, energy, and personality you pour into your videos!

      Chris, thank you for this! VISUALS help memories stick, so tying numbers to images goes a long way. And not just numbers, but anything. There are things from 5th grade I can't forget if I wanted to, because I used silly images to remember them. This is before I got "The Memory Book", but I guess it's why that book made so much sense to me - because my mind works in a silly way. :)

I'm pretty impatient when it comes to art so I'm always hopping between projects - painting to molding to cake decorating to stenciling, etc. I go on UA-cam, start watching videos and the UA-cam algorithm does its thing; its awful bad thing of suggesting dumb videos/channels. I feel like that algorithm finally pointed me in the right direction; I subscribed a few days ago and you're already one of my favorite channels ever, not just art-related, but overall. (They call this condition Dyscalculia.) I am actually very good with words, so using words to remember numbers might do the trick for me. Thus, it is helpful to know such a technique exists. 1st things 1st. Hello Crafsman:-) hope you're doing great! :-) My mom taught me how to spell sorta like that. She would take the hard words and tell a short story using each letter. Like your "tables not my Fred nary" an unforgettable even stupid story. eg. "Metamorphosis" = met a mor pho sis= met a more 4 sisters. "Tropical"= Toads Run On Ponds I Carry A Lazy tadpole" But it's like you said it still takes a bit of practice, knowing where & when to drop or add #'s & ltrs. But once you've got your little formula pocketed it will never fail you. Take care and be blessed this Easter brother!

      Thank you so much! :D I enjoyed your comment. One thing that stuck out to me from learning to use memorization techniques is this: "Anything you do to help you remember something, will help you remember something." It's an interesting concept, but has held true for me. Like you said, the silly story/phrase/etc. makes it stick! :)

    Love this topic Crafsman!!
    On a similar note: A trick I use to remember lists of things (like if I need to get multiple things from the store, or run multiple errands) - I create a wild/fantastical story in my head - a sequence of events, where each one sparks the next. I think of what I need to pickup and if they are at different stores, I think of them in the order I need to get them, then create the sequence of events.
    E.g. Say I need to pick up: (from grocery store) crackers, milk, apple pie...and (from the hardware store) screws, and a plastic bin. My story/sequence would be the following:
    I surf through the doors of the local grocery store on a giant cracker (instead of a surfboard)...on a giant wave of milk...as I get through the doors I fall off and land in a massive hot apple pie; it's hot so I want to get out but can't because the filling is runny and I'm sinking...suddenly someone drills a huge screw in through the bottom of the pie and pulls it out....all the filling runs out, with me in it...into a large plastic bin (container) - Crackers, milk, pie, screws, bin (done) - Sounds crazy that I'd need to do that but I have ADHD and struggle committing things to memory....and this REALLY helps. Also it's quite quick - much quicker than explaining how to do it ;-)
    I'm using my strength (good imagination) to overcome my weakness (bad memory)

      I use my cellphone camera to take a photo of my shopping list - and I take my phone shopping with me. We make a great pair.

    This is great for people that cant remember large sequences, I only need it for small ones. My strange brain... I can remember very large sequences after seeing them just once if I say it out loud once. But lordy lordy don't ask me to remember 1,2,3,4, or 5 numbers. I just cant retain those smaller numbers. Its a pain in the rump, because I forget pin numbers all of the time. I'll have to try this method for that. Thanks Crafsman. You rock, as always.

    Dear CrafsMan, i vow to learn this system here and be able to recall large numericalized sequentials with ease. Im gonna let you know how it works out for me. You are the greatest of the greatest to ever do it. Love Kokoberry

    I got in trouble at school when I was about 8 years old - teacher asked me to bang out the chalk dust from the eraser on the wall and when he came back wondering why I had taken so long he found I'd written 'PUNK' in giant letters on the rough brick wall. He was really cross with me!
