How to memorize 70,000 digits of Pi

  • The “memory palace” is a famous technique that makes incredible feats of memory possible (the world record for “number of digits of Pi memorized” is a whopping 70,000). And yet, most of us struggle to remember a new phone number. We perform some simple tests on ourselves to make better use of our frustratingly limited recall.

    For the memory palace as they put it (when I was studying how to increase the capacity for learning) it is better when you pick places in your physical room to assign the "cards or objects" there clock-wise or counter clockwise as opposed to random locations in your room.
    It does work..
    I was studying engineering and had to remember formulas for this class and I created a story in my bedroom and the formulas were in different parts of my bedroom..

    It IS about being born with a special memory gift, but some people are better than others at training and picking up memory tasks faster. Doesn't mean you shouldn't try if your memory is bad, but people are definitely born with better memory than others.

    I do this to mess with people when I'm telling them my phone number. In the states it's just 7 numbers in a group of 3 then 4, but all you have to do to confuse people is give it to them in a group of 4 then 3. So instead of 123-4567 you simply pause after the 4, so 1234-567. I've never had anyone able to keep up if you do it truly spontaneously. I suspect it's mostly due to the fact that I'm intentionally breaking the pattern that they are primed to expect. Try it sometime.

    I tried remembering some part of Pi and got too bored after 730-ish digits (kind of a bummer since in the 760s I think there are 6 9's right after another). Really, it's mostly strategy. And I don't like most of the "famous" memory strategies. Remembering an object for each card? ...and how do I remember those? Personally, I used to play tons of games so I know a lot of games inside out, like I know all of Mario 64's star missions in order. So let's put a three dimensional digit in these locations and make use of their shapes.

    Tbh, whts the use of training to become "memory athletes"? I don't think it has any practical use in daily life. Boosting your working memory on the other hand, can be much more useful. Besides, you'll probably be spending more time creating these associations between the objects to be memorized and some other objects than actually trying to memorize it...

    • @zeugens
      @zeugens 6 років тому +3

      some memory athletes compete to learn the names of a bunch of random strangers all at once. they can get pretty good at this, to the point where they only need to look at a face for a couple seconds to remember each person's name

      @rvervuurt 6 років тому +8

      "I don't think it has any practical use in daily life."
      Good that being good at skiing, running, shooting bow & arrow and other sports have a practical use in daily life.

    • @funnyvideosfans
      @funnyvideosfans 6 років тому +2

      penile 1 I clearly did not say that. I said that training your memory to the level of said "memory athletes" is neither practical nor immensely beneficial. Give me instances when you'd actually need to memorize things to such extent unless you're working in medicine or preparing for some exam. Most modern exams also don't even test a candidate purely based on what they have memorized but also tests their logic and deductive reasoning among many others and these skills require a large working memory (as you'd need to keep several things in mind at the same time to make connections between them within the alloted timeframe). Instead of trying to become some sort of biological encyclopedia, your time would be much better spent on practicing these other skills instead of honing your long term memory. It would be great if these techniques would allow you to quickly toss everything you see into long term memory and make them stay there; however, they clearly don't (at least not significantly). The human brain is just wired to forget things that we deem unimportant. So unless you truly have the conscious desire to remember that particular thing you have memorized, it will eventually fade one way or another. Working memory in the other hand, helps you get things done at the present. It allows you to run many more complex processes at the same time. It's like your computer's RAM. Would you rather have a computer with 10 TB of HDD storage and 4 GB of RAM or one with 512 GB or HDD storage and 32 GB of RAM? If you wish to live as a backup computer that stores family photos from 15 years ago then the first one would work just fine. Otherwise, the second one beats the first one every single time. You would be able to run multiple heavier programs at the same time and still have a smooth user experience. Even though it has less long term memory, it's not like we would need to store an excel spreadsheet from 15 years ago do we? Well, at least that's my opinion. Which computer would you rather be?

    • @funnyvideosfans
      @funnyvideosfans 6 років тому +1

      penile 1 Yes I did. And for me, actually trying to understand the concept is much more helpful than trying to make vague and detached imageries of the thing you are trying to memorize. It does not only help me with memorizing the subject but also helps me with developing on those ideas more easily. I guess it's a subjective matter but regardless of how you perceive the arguments I have presented above, it still remains true that most people would prefer to become the second computer. To each his own.

    • @funnyvideosfans
      @funnyvideosfans 6 років тому +1

      penile 1 Then tell me, how long would it take to get the "right image"? Why would that be of any help to me when I can get straight As (A*s actually because A levels) with my current technique which does not involve any conscious, forceful effort to perform? Why would I waste any more time trying to invent the proper mnemonic for every single thing I learn? It could be that I simply have an atrocious imagination but well, that makes your point just as subjective as how you perceived mine. :)

    Numbers is only the dumbest things you can memorize with speed and precision for long intervals of time or for life. The memory palace technique or method of loci, memory pegging lists (mostly for numbers and alphabets) and pure imagination are the only "three" memory techniques. Following the principles of memorization: a mental location, a mental image or imagination (not only visuals) and association (LIA for short). Enter in the artofmemory.com and learn more.

    OK. I could not remember even all those objects for assignment, not to mention how I would assinging them to cards, and then.. what? Recite all of this in correct order? I have really poor memory. When I play Diablo, I have to color mouse button, to remember which one to click! :D Luckily for us YT's know we have poor memory, so they certainly acknowledge this near the end - hit the bell;)))!

      Calter Bro's I once memorised pi to 100 digits in less than a hour, but to do that, you have to use visualisation techniques like the ones described in the video. It can't be done in a very short time just trying to remember the digits on their own.

    I know only 100 digits of pi.
    For many years I've known only around 46 digits, which I flexed with to other kids in class, where at some point I could recite them without thinking, like singing a song while taking a bath, with the latter 54 digits I was looking for some pattern where there were some nice ones like 0628620, and a few digits after that 86280 and 974944, for some I needed to be a bit creative life for 164 I was thinking I have 1 copy of Super Mario 64, and 34825 is kinda like 345 where 82 ruins it.
