How to memorize 70,000 digits of Pi

- Опубліковано 28 вер 2024
- The “memory palace” is a famous technique that makes incredible feats of memory possible (the world record for “number of digits of Pi memorized” is a whopping 70,000). And yet, most of us struggle to remember a new phone number. We perform some simple tests on ourselves to make better use of our frustratingly limited recall.

Eman Sol Almost correct, the last digit is 9.
@Ninja Reflexess no its 3.14 i believe..
I can remember infinite digit of the number 0.3333333333...
wouldn't one say 0.3 repeating or 1/3?
Its just 0.4 in base 12....

I thought those are the new apple products.
Nah, it's fitting.
For the memory palace as they put it (when I was studying how to increase the capacity for learning) it is better when you pick places in your physical room to assign the "cards or objects" there clock-wise or counter clockwise as opposed to random locations in your room.
It does work..
I was studying engineering and had to remember formulas for this class and I created a story in my bedroom and the formulas were in different parts of my bedroom..
The Life of Pi
never ends
I now just realized how much that Guinness world record adjudicator had to suffer. LOL
Someone in this world can memorize 70000 digits of pi while i cant even memorize where i left my keys
Right so you know how today is Pi day?
In maths my math teacher gave us this game or something about remembering pi and after he revealed that his brother memorised 70k digits so I think the guy he was talking about at the start of the video was my maths teachers brother? 😂

K Pvp were you there? No. I didn’t think so, so just keep your mouth shut if you don’t have anything nice to say.
Lies...
This kind of makes sense, in a way. I can read a book and go back and pick out a quote easily, because I remember where in the book I saw it (which side of the page, how far down, what percentage into the book).
I forgot my verge account so I came here to comment :) This is beautifully done video. Grate work and nicely shot, special effects, cuts. Just amazeballs. Thank you
At 2:57, she says "people like you and me"! Not "like you and I"; she actually used the appropriate grammatical form of standard professional English. In a time when even New York Times columnists routinely default to the hypercorrect form, color me impressed.
0:42 lol his name is William Poor and he's the producer! amazing!
Pfft I can remember all of the digits of Pi
same
It's true, I was the pi
Same but just not in the right order

It is not like you went to google and said give me pi
There's a great book called Moonwalking with Einstein about this subject.
Guys plz tell me I am Normal, because this is the kind of stuff I watch at 1-3am. Like right now it’s almost 2am. Am I crazy? Or it’s just a thing?
Oh yea just in case you are asked what are the first 70000 digits of pi in exam
That has nothing to do with this video.
if you don't watch this vid and that happens it's flunkville for you
The first 100 digits of the pi 3.141592653589793238462643383279502884197169399375105820974944592307816406286208998628034825342117067 well that’s all I know
It IS about being born with a special memory gift, but some people are better than others at training and picking up memory tasks faster. Doesn't mean you shouldn't try if your memory is bad, but people are definitely born with better memory than others.
It’s much easier to apply a tone to every number for me 0-9 being cdefgabcde and then I can slowly translate my pitch memory to number memory over time. Search pi song. It might help.
im pretty proud of the 50 digits of pi i memorized
You can't there I saved you 6 minutes
When I was 12 I memorized over 300 digits of pi, after spending 5 minutes a day for a week memorizing it
Yeah I was 13 and got to 1000, still remember the first 600
Im over here remembering every single comment ive ever wrote and what video I wrote it on yet I can't remember something I heard yesterday
I do this to mess with people when I'm telling them my phone number. In the states it's just 7 numbers in a group of 3 then 4, but all you have to do to confuse people is give it to them in a group of 4 then 3. So instead of 123-4567 you simply pause after the 4, so 1234-567. I've never had anyone able to keep up if you do it truly spontaneously. I suspect it's mostly due to the fact that I'm intentionally breaking the pattern that they are primed to expect. Try it sometime.
just like in kpop
theres many groups with tons of members names to remember
but in loona i find myself remembering them faster because each members have a unique name and has their each and own song so i recall them by songs colors etc .. etc...
what about those with photographic/eidetic memory, wouldn't they win all the competitions?
Now tell us how to remember where the things are kept and what is the order? I think that is a heck of a problem.
This was recomended around 1 day late :(
Happy belated Pi day :)
Only in India... where people memorize 70k numbers of Pi, but poop on the streets
*draws a card*
-oh! That's banana I hanged in my bathroom!
I tried remembering some part of Pi and got too bored after 730-ish digits (kind of a bummer since in the 760s I think there are 6 9's right after another). Really, it's mostly strategy. And I don't like most of the "famous" memory strategies. Remembering an object for each card? ...and how do I remember those? Personally, I used to play tons of games so I know a lot of games inside out, like I know all of Mario 64's star missions in order. So let's put a three dimensional digit in these locations and make use of their shapes.
Welcome to another episode of why is this in my suggestions? 😂😂😂
Hahhaha! xD
I memorized up to a little over 100 digits of pi about a year ago, almost remember all of them
EDIT: I remembered them all because of PI day 2019 and I learned a few more as well
3.14159 thats all i got
*But why would you do that?*
For a Guiness Record
*-keep on learning keep on learning-*
Tbh, whts the use of training to become "memory athletes"? I don't think it has any practical use in daily life. Boosting your working memory on the other hand, can be much more useful. Besides, you'll probably be spending more time creating these associations between the objects to be memorized and some other objects than actually trying to memorize it...
some memory athletes compete to learn the names of a bunch of random strangers all at once. they can get pretty good at this, to the point where they only need to look at a face for a couple seconds to remember each person's name
"I don't think it has any practical use in daily life."
Good that being good at skiing, running, shooting bow & arrow and other sports have a practical use in daily life.
penile 1 I clearly did not say that. I said that training your memory to the level of said "memory athletes" is neither practical nor immensely beneficial. Give me instances when you'd actually need to memorize things to such extent unless you're working in medicine or preparing for some exam. Most modern exams also don't even test a candidate purely based on what they have memorized but also tests their logic and deductive reasoning among many others and these skills require a large working memory (as you'd need to keep several things in mind at the same time to make connections between them within the alloted timeframe). Instead of trying to become some sort of biological encyclopedia, your time would be much better spent on practicing these other skills instead of honing your long term memory. It would be great if these techniques would allow you to quickly toss everything you see into long term memory and make them stay there; however, they clearly don't (at least not significantly). The human brain is just wired to forget things that we deem unimportant. So unless you truly have the conscious desire to remember that particular thing you have memorized, it will eventually fade one way or another. Working memory in the other hand, helps you get things done at the present. It allows you to run many more complex processes at the same time. It's like your computer's RAM. Would you rather have a computer with 10 TB of HDD storage and 4 GB of RAM or one with 512 GB or HDD storage and 32 GB of RAM? If you wish to live as a backup computer that stores family photos from 15 years ago then the first one would work just fine. Otherwise, the second one beats the first one every single time. You would be able to run multiple heavier programs at the same time and still have a smooth user experience. Even though it has less long term memory, it's not like we would need to store an excel spreadsheet from 15 years ago do we? Well, at least that's my opinion. Which computer would you rather be?
penile 1 Yes I did. And for me, actually trying to understand the concept is much more helpful than trying to make vague and detached imageries of the thing you are trying to memorize. It does not only help me with memorizing the subject but also helps me with developing on those ideas more easily. I guess it's a subjective matter but regardless of how you perceive the arguments I have presented above, it still remains true that most people would prefer to become the second computer. To each his own.
penile 1 Then tell me, how long would it take to get the "right image"? Why would that be of any help to me when I can get straight As (A*s actually because A levels) with my current technique which does not involve any conscious, forceful effort to perform? Why would I waste any more time trying to invent the proper mnemonic for every single thing I learn? It could be that I simply have an atrocious imagination but well, that makes your point just as subjective as how you perceived mine. :)
i feel like this is totally a different kind of memory than remembering where you put yr things. i feel like its trivial for me to learn at least 20 digits of pi than know where my keys are 80% of the time.
This is how I memorize WiFi passwords.
I can’t even remember what I ate this morning and you expect me to remember 70’000 numbers DAMN
There is a type of sickness wherein you can remember all the stuff when you are still baby

That's gross
My working memeory is very good i can remember 2-3 10 digits numbers in one time....but my permanent memory is just unexistant i dont even remember what happened yesterday
That stuffed animal is terrifying
I forget what I had for lunch
Numbers is only the dumbest things you can memorize with speed and precision for long intervals of time or for life. The memory palace technique or method of loci, memory pegging lists (mostly for numbers and alphabets) and pure imagination are the only "three" memory techniques. Following the principles of memorization: a mental location, a mental image or imagination (not only visuals) and association (LIA for short). Enter in the artofmemory.com and learn more.
*and now I'm going to put the brick into the insulation pads*
Well, I take 8 numbers at a time, put a little rythm and melody on 'em and repeat them speaking and writing.
All I do is memorize 3 digits at a time because muscle memory kicks in.
From memory? That would suggest that he sat down and memorized them, which is impossible. Rajveer Meena was able to do it because he was born with incredible math skills.
I can't even count to 70,000 without giving up because it's too much, nevermind 70,000 digits of pi
I can't even remember which objects I gave to my cards...
This is making me stress about my maths test in a week stop
I memorized the periodic table
Yes I know I'm a nerd, what you gonna do about it?
*Happy Pi Day, guys!!* 😁
Memory palace... Sherlock?
God. I just realised this now but i used the memory palace when i was grade 6. God i used to assign people the I know to months, to memorize the seasons.
0:38 “....forgetting 7 digits “. -> input only 6 digits
The presenter was given information about how to remember long sequences of numbers but yet he ends the segment by saying he probably won't get better at remembering 7 digits, wow, nothing like giving it 100% effort....or even 10%.
but if i try to make a memory palace i will probably just forget wwhat cards the objects are for
I don’t wanna memorise. I just wanna listen.
So a guy memorize 70k digits of pi and got world record certificate? I would have just randomly say a number unlimitedly
Blood inside a wall is that good?
Problem with memory palaces is you might not REMEMBER what object you assigned a certain card with.
4:17 what?
now that’s scary af
Just repeating it often enough without any tricks got me to:

Depends how much RAM you have
OK. I could not remember even all those objects for assignment, not to mention how I would assinging them to cards, and then.. what? Recite all of this in correct order? I have really poor memory. When I play Diablo, I have to color mouse button, to remember which one to click! :D Luckily for us YT's know we have poor memory, so they certainly acknowledge this near the end - hit the bell;)))!

The irrationality of memorizing the base 10 representations of irrational numbers.

Calter Bro's I once memorised pi to 100 digits in less than a hour, but to do that, you have to use visualisation techniques like the ones described in the video. It can't be done in a very short time just trying to remember the digits on their own.
The question is WHY DO YOU WANT TO MEMORIZE THOSE DIGITS?
Student 1 : oh look bro I have memorize all the digits of Pie.
Student 2 : Dude this isn't math class.

I know only 100 digits of pi.
For many years I've known only around 46 digits, which I flexed with to other kids in class, where at some point I could recite them without thinking, like singing a song while taking a bath, with the latter 54 digits I was looking for some pattern where there were some nice ones like 0628620, and a few digits after that 86280 and 974944, for some I needed to be a bit creative life for 164 I was thinking I have 1 copy of Super Mario 64, and 34825 is kinda like 345 where 82 ruins it.
