@@cheshirecynic3061 He's mentioned grappling hooks a fair few times, but shit like that has already been tested and proven effective and safe, yet it's never put into commission. Those specialised police front bull-bars that fold out two poles (like a forklift) with straps entwined between them. As someone who has lived in LA for over 30 years… when you’re out there driving on the road, it’s hard to know who’s involved in a police chase and who’s not, since everyone in California speeds down the street
Not sure what area you’ve been in, but as a native Angeleno that has been here for 26 years and going, that’s half-true. Everyone normally drives 5 above the limit on the streets. If the limit is 40, everyone will is driving 43-45. There are speedsters that will do 50+ but they aren’t as common. Now the freeways are a different story. Everyone drives above the limit on the freeways when there’s no clogged traffic, 80+ stay in the express lanes.
9:47 As soon as Charlie started talking about the sniper shot and the intersection overlay came up it looked like it was showing the sniper's aim compensating for wind and distance
I was watching this live with my dad and when he got to the school with all the kids walking home we were panicking so unbelievably hard, thankfully he didn't do anything to the kids.
This was my thought. Honestly, I'm so glad that whatever small spark of morality was still within him kept him from taking a hostage or just outright going on a murder spree.

I was thinking about that when it happened maybe he ran out of ammo or jammed the gun? Or he might have been trying to decide whether or not to shoot at them because there are multiple times where he could've just went through without hitting

6:40 in some places you can get shot for cutting someone off, honking at someone, or scraping someone. Where I grew up it was common to get a gun pulled on you if you dared to honk at someone
The fact that people got scared about him opening fire into the kids even though it didn’t happen (and probably was never his intention) shows how much of a gun problem the US has. We are completely traumatized
I didn't even know live car chases were a real thing until midway through Mizkifs stream he pulls this up and oh my god, every time he came to a stop my heart dropped and I fully had thought when he stopped near those school kids he was either going to pull something or take a hostage. Scary stuff man
at 9:00 when you mentioned the "grapple gun", there is something similar police utilize but not very widely (to my knowledge). Its a net that deploys from below the grill, and the officer drives right up to the car almost tailgating it, and the net gets deployed on the wheels, making the car lose control.
There's also an EMP device that's basically like a car-mounted taser launcher, which can disable the vehicle that's being chased, called the RF Safe-Stop.
I can't be the only person who said "oh thank god" out loud when he stopped for the little kids crossing. I could hear the absolute dread in the commentator's voice too, I feel like he was probably closing his eyes for his own sanity in case he saw something happen live that would haunt him for the rest of his life.
10:40 I grew up in the LA area and my elementary school would have lockdowns if chases were in our area (honestly so smart after watching the close call in this vid) and I always remember them playing on the living room tv. I was honestly so shocked when my friends from norcal said they didn't really have them.
8:39 theres a concept for a wheel catcher that can be mounted on the front of an SUV, basically 2 forklift style forks mounted on the grill fold down in front with some kevlar straps between them, the police driver would then ram the back corner of the pursued vehicle to get the rear wheel caught in the straps, they tangle up and the kevlar spools out to a slightly longer length keeping the cars about 1-2 car lengths from each other. once thats done the SUV slams on the breaks to bring the 2 to a stop in a much more controlled way than a pit maneuver
My family and I went out to LA as a part of our vacation last year. When we were there, me and my brother were amazed by the helicopters flying around with search lights (it was late at night), the chase we watched must've been crazy
I saw it live. @ 14:46, They had to carry him like that. They beat the complete crap out of him then stood on his legs while he laid there. Sucks to be a criminal.
LA Car Chases have been a TV spectator event since OJ’s Bronco in the 90s. It hasn’t changed, just the medium through which you’re watching them and the improvement in chase cam tech.
I’m from SoCal and before live-streaming it would be broadcasted as breaking news live on all of our local news stations. Broadcasted pursuits happen pretty frequently, especially early afternoon to late evening.
11:55 HITRON is a coast guard unit of helicopter mounted marksmen, usually trained on taking out the engines of things like small boats used for drug running. I don't doubt that LAPD has something similar considering the size of the city and the budget they likely have.
4:58 I feel like a lot of times people think that if someone did a crime on video that it's the end all be all. They forget that a lot of factors could go into it, coercion is first to come to mind, if they're being held at gunpoint and forced to do things then they aren't guilty of the crime. This is why people are "innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt".
On the grappling hook idea, there's a device that some departments have experimented with which is basically a bunch of strong straps between 2 extended prongs on the front of the officers car, designed to wrap around a wheel and stop it from moving once the straps touch the tire, are pulled off, and become tangled in the wheel/axel. It works to stop the car very well, but it can be difficult to actually get it onto the wheel.
i think they had a battlebot that worked in a similar way, but thats about how id expect it to work, anything else would just rip the car apart or blast through the driver like it does the car.
This is legit like a sport in LA. Every LA news station will report a car chase at least once a week. This has been going on for as long as I can remember.

They actually have a grappler device but it works a little differently than you described. It's a net they can lower and touch the wheel of the car in front of them, then it gets tangled around the wheel and the officer can brake to force them to stop. Really needs to be used in more places

As someone who has lived in LA for over 30 years… when you’re out there driving on the road, it’s hard to know who’s involved in a police chase and who’s not, since everyone in California speeds down the street
To be fair, there's also too many of you driving 15 below the posted speed limit. I'll take the speeders
Here they speed like 40 over then tailgate ur ass even when you are already going like 10 over and arent in a fast lane
Mexicans
Not sure what area you’ve been in, but as a native Angeleno that has been here for 26 years and going, that’s half-true. Everyone normally drives 5 above the limit on the streets. If the limit is 40, everyone will is driving 43-45. There are speedsters that will do 50+ but they aren’t as common. Now the freeways are a different story. Everyone drives above the limit on the freeways when there’s no clogged traffic, 80+ stay in the express lanes.

at 9:00 when you mentioned the "grapple gun", there is something similar police utilize but not very widely (to my knowledge).
Right, they actually named it Grappler too, there's some cool videos of it being used out there
I'm convinced that people are starting car chases just to give Charlie more content.

I'm glad Charlie pointed out how few options the police had for the stopping the perp in this scenario, very tense situation.
Charlie is the only human to ever watch every single type of car chase like a book series, from the goofiest to the scariest.
Never in my life did I ever think I would see a police chase where a guy stops to ask someone for directions🤨
Hearing that they actually stopped him via a sniper from a helicopter makes it sound like something outta GTA V
8:39 theres a concept for a wheel catcher that can be mounted on the front of an SUV,
basically 2 forklift style forks mounted on the grill fold down in front with some kevlar straps between them, the police driver would then ram the back corner of the pursued vehicle to get the rear wheel caught in the straps, they tangle up and the kevlar spools out to a slightly longer length keeping the cars about 1-2 car lengths from each other.
once thats done the SUV slams on the breaks to bring the 2 to a stop in a much more controlled way than a pit maneuver
I will never get tired of Charlie’s car chase videos. Easily the best commentary content he’s putting out.

This is California... They're not allowed tools that'll help LE.
i think they had a battlebot that worked in a similar way, but thats about how id expect it to work, anything else would just rip the car apart or blast through the driver like it does the car.
That device is called the "crook hook".
This is legit like a sport in LA. Every LA news station will report a car chase at least once a week. This has been going on for as long as I can remember.
