Nice show, guys. Here is a question worthy of your considerable talents: What is it with World Tour chains and drivetrains? There are more dropped chains and gear jams in any given world tour race than there are punctures. It started three years ago, and the explanation then was that with covid parts shortages, the teams were running 12 speed cassettes on 11 speed chainrings. Well, that doesn't explain the last two years. I know myself when I changed from 10 speed cassettes to eleven, the shifting wasn't as sharp. Are 12 speed rigs that much more sensitive? Or is the wireless not as quick? Or do wireless/bluetooth signals cause problems with nearby bikes on a similar frequency? A high tech question for the top tech guys: Any answers? Surely you all have noticed this epidemic problem in the pro peleton. I this why Jumbo keeps going to 1X road machines?
On a side note: you are comparing retail prices here. As a bika manufacturer you are not paying 5000 bucks for the frame. That drops the real cost on the sponsor side significantly.
would love to see a video were GCN tech investigates if (or rather how much) the price of the top end models have gone up in price. Take some long going pro tour bike brands such as specialized, cannondal, bianchi etc. and find the price from the 1990s and very year up until today for there top spec model. Do some inflation adjustmants and plot it (inflation adjusted price vs. year). I suspect there has been some price jumps such as the introduction of carbon frames, Di2, disc breaks etc.

$18.4k is absolutely bonkers. Sure, the best of the best are riding them in the biggest race in the world, but WOW. I wonder how prices compared to the bikes from 20-30 years ago. Fantastic segment. Fascinating.
No. In 1998, I raced a Trek 5200OCLV, priced at around $3500. The 5500 was top of the line then, and that retailed for about 5k. Team Saturn were sponsored by Trek then, so they raced the bikes. Did just fine with the likes of the McCormacks, Rodriguez, and Brian Walton.

It looks like you are listing retail prices. What actually goes into costs for sponsoring a team (bike frame/part manufacturing, distribution, maintenance...) ? Can you estimate what the actual price of those bikes is ?
The first bike was like "Wow, thats expensive, but if I work hard enough and save, I could definitely buy one". And then it quickly went to "Im very much in the wrong hobby."
I wonder what the ranking would be if a points to dollar spent metric was calculated. Considering that Jasper Philipsen, on his Canyon, has got 3 stage wins now, against Mads Pedersons 1 win on his Trek. Alpecin-Deceuninck has saved 4,700 quid per bike vs Lidl Trek "Segafrado" and got much better results. Looking forward to the next two weeks of the Big yellow bike race.
Impressive bicycles, but sad how they push up the price of bicycles for the general public. I like: the Look, the Trek Madone, the Specialized Tarmac and the BMZ colour way.
It is true that sponsoring a cycling team represents a significant commitment for bike brands. However, unlike Formula One, where the cars used in races are vastly different from those available to the public, bike brands primarily sell the exact same models ridden by professional cyclists. This alignment means that the relatively small investment in sponsoring a team can yield substantial returns, as the visibility and credibility gained from success in popular races followed by millions of fans directly enhance the appeal and sales of their products. In essence, consumers can purchase and ride the same bikes that win major races, making sponsorship a highly effective marketing strategy in my opinion!

Those classic Bridgestone bikes are great 👌 Carbon bikes are great but you just can't beat the feel of a steel bike!
im surprised Giant/Merida is not the lowest/cheapest 🤔
Nothing Cadex comes cheap haha.
Giant is significantly more expensive than Merida if buying similar features from retail. (But I would have expected Merida to be the lowest, rather than near the lowest...)
Would have been nice to do another video to show those exact model but the lower end model, instead of what they are riding
fun fact.. cervelo owns cannondale, i guess thats why the two bikes are so much alike 5:50 and 6:10 and the price is exactly the same
I would be way too nervous to even ride a bike that expensive. 😮
You make a great point! For most of us crashing an expensive bike could be a disaster 😬 That's why in lots of crit style races, people choose to ride "cheaper" aluminium bikes that they worry less about.
Wait, why is the price on Dares website displayed in swedish cronwns "61.990,00kr" 1:36
It's the Norwegian Krone. Dare's website defaults to their Norwegian site if you don't choose otherwise. darebikes.no/
@@RedshiftDougal Oh okay, my bad. Almost same thing 🙃 Didnt know dare was Norwegian
Honestly! The best rider's in the world should be riding 50k bikes with all custom components! They are rich, fast and elite of the sports. Club rides have bikes worth 10k.
And the scary part is, even the cheapest bikes are on pretty high end components, you won't find a shifter cable anywhere in the peloton, even the Dare bikes are on Dura-ace DI2.
Electronic gears seem to be the future of cycling! With 105 and Apex making the electronic jump do you think we'll see this tech trickle down?
@@gcntech Hopefully Shimano will see the light and at least offer a non-electronic 105 12 speed. Even the cheapest electronic groupsets are VERY expensive.
It would be interesting to see how much difference these bikes make to the riders wouldn't it?
If everyone in a tour rode the same bike and specification I doubt very much there would be much of a change in final position, unlike F1 where the best car normally wins and not the best driver!
I would dream a Pinarello with a Campagnolo set. But the prices are going nuts... so may never could afford to own one. Still riding my 14 years old almost midrange decathlon bike with Campagnolo Veloce set... even so it's not only about the bike, 10 years ago, when I was in competitive level cycling, I "ate" quite a few Pinarello Price and other 10* costlier bike...
It doesn't cost the bike brand the retail price of the bike to supply it to the teams - that's how much they charge customers, not how much it costs them to build and supply it to whoever they want
How does Orbea’s Orca Aero compare to those bikes, would it fit in into the professional scene?
I like my Scott Addict but I'm thinking to going for a Cervelo R5 or S5.
Ooooo what a choice! Which way are you swaying? 👀
DOGMA F ,MERIDA , LOOK ARE MY FAVS but the TREK paint job rocks it and costs way too much !!
Canyon (Alpecin-Deceuninck) is one of the cheaper bikes but has 3 wins already. Trek-Lidl, $20k and little to show for it...
Don't speak too soon 😉
The alpecin deceunick is also the most beautiful bike in my personal opinion - both frame and paintjob!
Please make a video about the most/least reliable bikes of the tour. Which ones had more mechanicals, etc…
The Lidl water bottles on the most expensive bike is a cherry on the top xD
On a side note: you are comparing retail prices here. As a bika manufacturer you are not paying 5000 bucks for the frame. That drops the real cost on the sponsor side significantly.
Excellent video! Is there a reason why Campagnolo is so under-represented you reckon? Cheers!
would love to see a video were GCN tech investigates if (or rather how much) the price of the top end models have gone up in price.
I have a plan for the future, I’m going to wait on the finish line in a high viz jacket and pretend I’m there to collect the team bikes. Will grab the bike stick it in my van and get back to England. Doubt they’ll even miss it but I would really appreciate it
$18.4k is absolutely bonkers.
Sure, the best of the best are riding them in the biggest race in the world, but WOW.
I wonder how prices compared to the bikes from 20-30 years ago.
Fantastic segment. Fascinating.
The prices have certainly risen! 👀Do you think the quality of bikes has also risen?
No. In 1998, I raced a Trek 5200OCLV, priced at around $3500. The 5500 was top of the line then, and that retailed for about 5k.
Team Saturn were sponsored by Trek then, so they raced the bikes. Did just fine with the likes of the McCormacks, Rodriguez, and Brian Walton.
once peto sagan is gone will that team cut ties with specialized? to me i like the colnago and willier but also like that bmc with only campy setup. are there performance differences between these really?
Maybe it would be cool to have prices in euro too, cause I think a lot of viewers are from euro zone. By the way, very interesting video.
Merida is so underrated
100%
@@shanewiseman5729 Merida is not available in the US. For awhile some years back (denied by Specialized) due to back payments from Specialized, they had a controlling interest in the brand. Supposedly that is no longer the case. Regardless, in that they are the primary supplier of Specialized frames, there is an agreement between the companies not to sell Merida in the States.
Got two stages so far.. Merida is doing great I say
The Colnago and the Willier are my favorits🤩
Uno-X’s Dare bikes are Custom painted for weight stavings. Not the same wheelset as sold stock. Anything Else is probably stock.
What about the Bianchi bike, Arkea Team? Why isn’t it in this video?
Whatch again
I love the frame design, look and paint on the Trek, but I will stick with my somewhat cheeper MEKK.
What do they do with the bikes once the Tour is over of once the season is over?
I have two Cannondales , one Trek … just got a new Giant I am so impressed with the Giant that I hardly ride the other bikes so Giant #1 Cannondale #2 Then when I have too Trek but it still comes down to owners preference they are all capable bikes
That sounds like a pretty sweet garage!
Hello, my favorite is canondale supersixevo, It would be interesting know what of these bikes has better price/quality
When I was riding 25 years ago, campagnolo group set was more popular than the shimano sets but seem now everyone else is using shimano instead …is campagnolo still around or gone out of business ?
Campy was more popular 40 years ago. Since 25 years ago Shimano has completely taken over components. Since 10 years ago SRAM has equaled Campy in popularity. But Campy has history. Sadly one of their biggest innovations, like quick-release itself created by the man 'Tullio' is declining due to disk brakes;
@@russelfernandes8483 I used to own campy c record hub set and that iconic c record triangular brake…it felt like I had turbo on or Ferrari parts on my bike that draw admiration from others when dura ace was the next best group set follow by integra group set as been entry level price for any riders …
@@russelfernandes8483 sorry I miscalculate the years , it was 35 years ago not 25 years as I did not realise it was in late eighties not late nineties …when I was riding
When will the treks come to the middle aisle?!
Price in euro would have been appreciated.
Great and interesting video.
Great comment on the TDF bikes. How about a comparison between the cheapest and most expensive bike in TDF this year. Let's wait until the end of the race to know what we talk about.
ITs high end....... That isnt fair. Someone without that Money should Look in Low end
I'd like the Cervelo is I had the cash. wonder if it would be any better than my current ribble endurance Al
no
@@russelfernandes8483 bit lighter though.
What do you mean by 'biggest sporting event in the world'? I'd have thought that would be the Olympics or World cup? I'm sure it is in one category (live spectators, etc) but I'd be interested to know. Great channel
That trek looked beautiful 🤩
Are these prices estimations based on retail prices including build cost?
The factor shown was the new o2 vam I think, not the ostro. The new o2 vam is £12k. Which very annoyingly is way out of my budget.
Good video guys.. not sure Cuthbert should be presenting it though? He famously doesn’t know the price of Shimano components.. 🤪
I’m biased but I love my Pinarello. Not too far off adding a TT bike to my arsenal.
Nice, which one are you thinking of getting? Have you seen our Pinarello film on GCN+? 👉 gcn.eu/pinarellostory
@@gcntech of course, great documentary. Hopefully a Cervelo P Series.
Where do these bikes go after the race? Do they end up on the market? or auction?
At the end of the season you can ask the Team If they selling Them. Normally they do throigh different ways.
how are the Dare bikes, any experinces?
