That was a really in depth video, thx so much. Back in the late 90's I built a Colnago SLX and put Dura Ace on it , I was told by the shop it was a sin not to use Campagnolo components. When I saw the Colnago review I was like "yes" ..I was right .. lol
The Canyon Aeroad with the seen seatpost clamp has actually been released to the public a few weeks ago, Canyon just didn't make any public announcements about it but just silently replaced the photos on their website
I love the new bikes as much as anyone. But I ride an older, ca.2011, Pinarello FP3. Still a head turner today. Recently, I was invited on a group ride with a bunch of fellows, most of whom had very current bikes. Even amidst all these beautiful, expensive, modern masterpieces, everyone was fawning over my "old fashioned" bike. 50/34 chainwheel, 11-25 freewheel, rim brakes, alloy rims, external cabling, no power meter, no computer. Ha, I love how it's standing up.
Some very interesting stuff. 1. The fact no one runs below 7kg, because aero is king. 2. Enve wheels paired with gp5000 not enve tires. 3. How some of the best riders are using 30mm and above for gp5000. Wider tires becoming the norm are great, much more comfort for ave riders and still quick.
the cervelo s5 is a size 51cm and the sram red cassette is way bigger than the traditional 10-33 cassette. they are rumored to be running 36t to pair with their 1x crankset
Thank you for the details you provided here! Always nice to see bikes I could never afford to ride... :) If your time permits, could you please have a more detailed look at the Giant? Also, they seem to have an extreme difference between small and large frame size!?
Haha, likewise! 😀 Unfortunately, we didn't get time to have a detailed look at the Giant's this year, but we did have an in-depth look at the new Propel at last year's race - you can watch that video here: ua-cam.com/video/ZIa3vAB-6iA/v-deo.html Alternatively, you can read my full review of the Giant Propel Advanced SL 0 on our website: www.bikeradar.com/reviews/bikes/road-bikes/2023-giant-propel-advanced-sl-0-review/
Yeah, I wondered if that was the case, but the tyres on Kristoff's bike looked like normal Pro One's other than the blue stripe - the Aerothan tyres ar Eurobike appeared much thinner and had a slightly different tread pattern. It could well be a new/different TPU version of the Pro One TLE, though - hopefully we can find out more soon! Cheers for watching. Simon
It s really cool to be in such close proximity to these beautiful machines, always curious about the top level bikes. Your access is impressive, these teams must like and trust you! Does anyone ride Campagnolo anymore? How about the new BMC team bikes? I am still riding a 2011 BMC Racemachine ..but my riding skills hardly even warrants that even that degree of technology!
The teams are usually very accommodating to be fair - they want the publicity for their sponsors as much as we want to cover the bikes, so it kind of works out. But yes, we are very careful with the bikes! AG2R are still using Campagnolo - we took a close look at Ben O'Connor's prototype BMC aero road bike, which had the new Campagnolo Super Record Wireless on it, in one of our other videos from this year's Tour de France: ua-cam.com/video/uKyZq0zxj64/v-deo.html Cheers for watching! Simon
Really nice review. How on earth did you blag your way to get so intimate with the bikes!? Interesting to see the real mix up of kit and sizing in the mix!
My favourite by far is Pogacar's bike because of the matte black paintjob and silver accents on the logos, in addition to all the small considerations like the handlebars and seatpost
@@christophertan3195faster uphill, basically the same flat. These alleged speed benefits of aero bikes are firstly very minimal, and secondly from wind tunnel data which doesn’t always apply to the real wind. Remember tail fin aero helmets anyone?
Love the attention to detail. Look at Cavendish bike. If he ever starts his own company he already has the perfect brand logo 6:24 I wonder if the valve cap delete is intentional. It saves 5 grams and makes the bike slightly more aero, saving 0.007 watts/km
Yeah, that's right - the new Shimano Dura-Ace moved from 53-39t to 54-40t with the latest generation and every Shimano-sponsored rider we saw was using those at the Grand Depart. Of course, some might switch to a 52/36t or 50/34t for mountainous stages, but also maybe not - given they have access to 11-34t cassettes these days, many won't need smaller chainrings unless it's a super steep climb. Crazy how fast these guys are! Cheers for watching. Simon
I think the ultralight tubular wheels and narrow tyres help here, plus the fact that the bike is wrapped rather than painted and it's a fairly small size. But you're right, it's impressive for a proper aero road bike! Cheers for watching. Simon
@1barnet1 all I can say is the pre-face lift version in 54 which you can hardly tell apart, with a lighter dura ace groupo on our scales was 7.8kg, so also equally intrigued how facelift and heavier groupset has led to such a huge weight loss. Must be outrageously light set of wheels and tyres!!
@LordAus123 and I suppose we must also accept that perhaps the stuff the pros ride isn't quite the same as the stuff we can buy - even if it is the top of the range. I still find it odd that the commentators refer to JV R5 climbing bike they're using, that isn't actually available to the public and doesn't look like an R5....😂😂
why do these guys have "too small" frames and handlebar? if I wanna feel more agile should I go from 54 to a 52/51? (I am 178cm) - or is it for amateur riders not feasible to ride for hours in a such a sportive position?
Would be interesting to ask why jumbo has been driving shallow wheels in general on the s5 this year.. not often you see them on 50mm or deeper, even for the classics.
Incredible you can touch the bikes and take the weight 😮 I would not want that the whole world knows every detail about my bike - especially when i want to win the tour. We just ask nicely 🙂Unfortunately we didn't have time to cover the TT bikes this year, as the TT isn't until later in the race and we were only around for the Grand Depart. Cheers for watching. Simon
Very interesting to see the bike weights. Some surprises in there - how light the S5 was and how heavy the Filante was. Maybe it really is made of marble.
Hi, ENVE actually confirmed to us the integrated handlebar is new - it uses a different geometry to their previous handlebars. You can read more about it on our website, if you're interested: www.bikeradar.com/news/tadej-pogacar-enve-handlebar-tour-de-france/ Cheers for watching! Simon
Hi, in our experience, most brands actually measure handlebars centre to centre at the brake hoods and/or drops. We chose to measure at the brake hoods as that where most riders spend most of their time. Cheers for watching, Simon
Ha the teams were a bit more relaxed on that this year as the bikes were generally a little lighter - last year in Copenhagen, everyone was riding aero bikes with super deep rims and the teams were a bit more hesitant to let us weigh them! Cheers for watching. Simon
I don't know what size Aeroad MvdP rides but I have an exact identical setup to his, except saddle is fizik and tyres are 25mm GP5000s, mine is a medium & weighs 7.4kg w/pedals and bottle cages.. Weird... Don't know if the paint adds a bit? Mine was built from the frameset option and comes with polished carbon finish. Still seems quite a lot heavier? Paint, vittorias, saddle = 0.4kg? I mean my left arse cheek probably weighs more than MvdP, so......😂😂
Interesting MVDP's handlebars appear to be 40cm, whilst according to Canyon's website they can be adjusted between 39, 41 and 43cm on the current generation. I don't think he has a non-flex seatpost given his Paris-Roubaix bike also had the seat clamp on the top. If it's going to be a new model, it's quite surprising he'd be the only one riding that bike in his team.
Good spot, but I believe it's intentionally reversible (to allow the rider to choose a steeper seatpost angle) rather than in the 'wrong' way. Cheers for watching, Simon
We did measure Cav's tyres, but I guess the footage showing that didn't make the cut. For the record, Cav had 28c Vittoria Corsa Pro TLR tyres, which measured 27.4mm wide on the HED rims. If you want more detail on Cav's bike, we published a bike check on our website: www.bikeradar.com/features/pro-bike/2023-tour-de-france-hands-on-mark-cavendish-custom-wilier-filante-slr/ Cheers for watching! You should't measure stem lenghts to the end of the handlebars. F.e. lenghth of MVDP stem is 10cm (maybe 11cm) but definitely not 12cm. It should be measured to the centre of handlebars.

I just purchased the SuperSix, so I guess that is my vote.

That Super6 looks very cool but the S5 is an aero dream bike. Great video BikeRadar, thank you!

My choice: the Cannondale!
