    I think the best way to understand counter steering is to experience it for yourself. I remember being in MSF and watching these types of youtube videos, this was the only thing that didn't quite sit right with me prior to riding. Once I did it it easily became second nature. You can study all you want but some things need to be experienced. Honestly it's nothing to get worked up about :P

      Jonny Moto --> Anyone who has ridden a 'bicycle' has implemented 'Counter Steering'... We as kids, on our bicycles 'Counter Steered'. WHY does everyone think, now, that we are on a bicycle with an 'Engine', it all of a sudden has to be Complicated????

      As kids you aren't taught counter steering on a bicycle, you just kind of learn it, nobody explains it to you. I think the reason people find it complicating is because of the way it is explained which sounds a little complicated, but its not after you get on the bike and try out what you did on a bicycle does it become clear. At least that was my experience.

    You might even be doing it without even thinking about it, especially when you have experience riding a bicycle. What’s best is that this method does not require body inclination since the bike is making the turn all by itself, essentially making it way easier than cornering with your body.

      @@louis-ferdinandceline8889 it's exactly the same as a push-bike, you likely just don't think about it. You counter-steer to cause the bike to lean in the direction you want to go, and then turn the wheel back to the direction of the turn. To turn without counter-steering requires you yourself to physically lean into the turn, otherwise your bike will lean the opposite way and eventually tip over completely if you don't correct by steering back.

    Push left, lean left, go left. Push right, lean right, go right. That's how I learned it. That's how I lived it. .... But really, the "push" after the instigation of the turn, is a "resisting" action. The wheel itself, after the very initial push, is actually angled toward the direction of the turn. You can see it in the video. Once a left turn is initiated, the wheels and handlebars want to turn into the turn, and the "push" is a resistance against that. You can view the video and observe the vector of wheel and see that after the turn is initiated, the angle is toward the turn. I hope that demystifies this phenomenon for everyone who just had their mind blown watching this video. Also... maybe there should be a caveat that this is in a non-skid condition only. A really good follow up video would be to demonstrate counterstaining at high speed on a dirt track, and then compare and contrast.

"It's exactly like a bike" I used to ride bikes hard core going upward of 50-70 mph on downhill slopes, or average of 40 on straight aways. So I know how to ride a bicycle, And you telling me it's exactly like that where you're cruising at 40+ and you simply press down, even possibly with a single finger, and your bike will go that way. It helps a lot by putting what i used to do into perspective and preparing me on exactly how to turn at those average speeds above 15 ish. thank you.

      Couldn’t give a shit about the science. I don’t need to understand how a phone works to use it, I just need to know what to do. If the rider pushes forward on the left bar, the bike will fall left. If he needs a little more lean to make the bend he pushes forward a little more. If he needs a little less lean, he’s eases the pressure off the left bar a little. He never ever corrects the steering by pointing into the bend, it will stand the bike up! Guess why...... countersteering!!!!!! Think about it. The front wheel does indeed point into the bend after countersteering, but that is the bike sorting that out due to steering geometry and the castor effect of the front wheel. Hope this helps!!!

    This is only half the story. True, you do push forward on the left grip to start the bike to turn left, but this causes the motorcycle to lean and turn by the front wheel actually turning left, hence the handlebars will eventually turn slightly left too at that point. After that steady pressing on the left is needed to keep the wheel from turning even more to the left combined with just the correct amount of the throttle. .

      All wrong. You never pull. You will end up in a body bag when a fraction of a second matters or you need finesse skills to maneuver a 1000 lb bike. This is never wrong and never lets you down. As your first subconscious move it always buys you time and allows you to make secondary mistakes you can easily cover by always making this your first go to move.
      If you push steer and slide a cheek just a little, you will never run wide and 90% of the time need to consciously go wider because the bike turns so well.
      That includes those 1000 lb baggers and they will ride like a sport bike.

      This is true! Close your eyes (when seated at home!) and run your brain databases. Think about a huge curve to the right in a mountain road at 60 km/h. Instinctively you bend your bike to to the right with a smooth movement of your body and it follows your order. What are your arms doing at that moment? Your right arm should be straight, slightly pushing the right side of the steering bar; the left one should be slightly bend. This is biker instinct working. Without thinking to much. All sports are like this. We do not think. We act.

That's where your mind plays tricks on you. Your mind might say get off the throttle but you need to lean more, push harder and stay in the throttle to ride it out. Chop the throttle and you upset the suspension possibly causing you to crash. Gotta retrain ya brain and survival instincts. ✌️

      There is no more.
      Push steer is always right and never wrong.
      You push steer 100% of the time.
      In an emergency you might push a little harder but if you always push steer your bike you won't have an emergency.
      Counter steer is an engineering term that applies to cars and trikes and you would never push on your steering wheel to turn your car.
      F counter steer. It's confusing from the word counter and push steering is not counter in any way to a bike.
      Push steer is the only way to ride a bike but you need to make it the rule and not an exception because it needs to be done without thinking.

    I did the MSF course in July and got my license in New Jersey. My only two-wheel experience was 10 years of riding a bicycle to work and for fun on weekends, and you also "counter-steer" on a bicycle, unless you're only doing 10 or less. It strikes me that nobody talks about counter-steering when you're learning how to ride a bike. You just do it. If you do anything else, you'll fall off, but what else is there to do?? I ask sincerely. Why is there so much emphasis on counter-steering when learning how to motorcycle? What else could you even do? Also, using the verb "push" to describe what you're doing to the handlebar just doesn't cut the mustard, feels like such a clumsy verb, though I can't think of a better one.

How eles was i able to take the bike home in one piece lol!!!! The freeways where i live aren’t a straight line either!

      You push forward slightly. Keep pushing until you reach the desired lean, then stop pushing more, just keep a neutral pressure on the bar.

    Let’s say your taking a left at a red light do you start the turn by just gaining speed and counter steering or just usually turn the handle bars

  • @seasonedtoker
    @seasonedtoker 5 років тому

    This is not counter steering. Counter steering is most prominent when you need to avoid an obstacle. Let's say you see a pothole in the last second and you want to go around it on the left side. First you turn slightly right to get all the weight in the opposite direction, then turn left sharply. As you said, you can do that on a bicycle too. Counter steering is best demonstrated by policemen on bikes when they go through their precision driving course. They can counter steer those cruisers at ridiculously low speeds. What you did is you just held the handlebar so it wouldn't fully turn in the direction you are travelling, otherwise the bike would just fall flat on its side.

  • @muf
    @muf 2 роки тому

    WHy are you saying that you are pushing when you are obviously turning right to go right and then turning the wheel left to come out of a right turn at 3:15?

    • @softailfun
      @softailfun 2 роки тому

      He pushes right grip to turn right.
      He pushes left grip to turn left.
      The front wheel does indeed turn into the bend, but this is due to the steering geometry of the bike and not rider input. If you were a rider you’d understand this. If you are a rider, learn how your fucking bike steers.

    • @ghoodlife

      dowward forward. More force pushing the handle down than the bike it will stand itself making u push forward and down. Its natrual. Just go to a lot and try weeve left and ride by pushing the handles down on both side. U will get it within a few mins. But doing that going 100mph is kinda scary so when u first take corners just go really slow and never use front brakes and put ur right foot on rear brakes IF emergency and u enter the corner to fast than slightly tap the right foot and take the corner and acclerate out of the corner.
      And always look at the road ahead where u want to go.
      Most people crash cuz they arent looking when they corner and use the front brakes cuz they entered the corner too fast.

    Some great negative coments here, what Mr Salt is saying is absolutely correct, you push left you go left, you push right you go right. What a lot people don't understand is what happens to the front tyre when you initiate a turn this way. All to do with the change of radius. Every rider uses counter/positive steering whether they realise it or not. Ride safe guys 👍

  • @MrTaffynoel

    I’m new to biking and watching countersteer after my bro mentioned it. It just sounded odd. But after watching the vid from 5:00 as it hours around the left then right turn, it became clear to me that I’m already doing this. Just hold your phone between two clenched fists, like you are riding, and try pushing with right hand to turn left. Feels wrong at speed. Then try it as it should be done, and it feels like it dies on the road. Like leaning to generate a low speed rotational torque to offset the centripetal torque. Basically it’s just naturally what you do

  • @JackAbcjzap
    @JackAbcjzap 3 роки тому +1

    so basically it's just pushing force on the force of the handlebars instead of turning them
