You have to remember that, unlike a car, you're actually riding on an inverted pendulum. Imagine yourself balancing a broom with one hand. If you want to make it go left, you don't move your hand to the left. The tip would just be left behind and fall to the opposite side. So, you first have to make the broom *lean* left, and to do that you move your hand underneath it to the right,. Once it starts to fall to the opposite side, you "follow" it at the base. It's the same on a motorcycle. To go left, you first have to move the wheels underneath it to the right. You do that by steering to the right. That will make the bike "fall" to the left. Once it's falling, now you can "control" the fall by counteracting it with speed and steering as you go around the corner.
Easier to understand, but still confused. If you turn right and the bike leans left, then you have to quickly turn left the handlebars left to actually go left? So isn’t that just jerking the handle bars???
You know, this is one of the best presentations I’ve seen yet. I’ve tried to explain this to somebody who is just stared learning and it is very difficult to do. Thank you I’ll be using this in hopes it helps. Stay safe out there and keep the rubber side down!
This video is aimed a new riders who don't have the confidence to make the bike do want they want it to do. I have been riding 20 years and on occasion that corner is a little tighter than I first thought, understanding in those situations that a little more pressure on the counter steer will get the bike on the right line is priceless and stop you landing in a hedge or into an oncoming car. Stop critising this video, if you are an experienced rider, then this video is not for you, it is for new riders to understand the theory and gain trust in doing what initially may not feel natural.
mumbo-jumbo science-rocket notes: counter steering works for two reasons: 1) push left bar forward, front wheel points right and rolls out from under bike's balance point, and bike falls left (that is, it leans left immediately), so the bike turns left because of the lean. this is the main reason counter steering works, accounting for 85% to 90% of the effect. 2) newton's second law (F=mA, force equals mass times acceleration) applied to rotation (or t=I.alpha, torque equals moment of inertia times angular acceleration). this torque effect is often cited first by us science rockets with our fancy-pants educations, but it is typically just a 10-15% effect. but, ahem, regardless all the effects and their relative importance, the theory is useless in a split-second decision (like in that bike-vs-firetruck video that made you jump out of your chair). you don't have time to think or work out the theory in a split second. what you need is muscle memory from shit-tons of practice. so get off your computer and go counter steer, counter steer, counter steer until you do it in your sleep. (finally, for the super geeky, in mumbo-jumbo science-rocket terminology, the 1st effect is called a holonomic constraint, i.e., the contact patch of the front tire is determined by its position relative to the pavement over time, assuming you don't skid while executing this maneuver.)
Hi Dave, it's my first time watching your channel. In theory, I had no idea what counter steering was. I guess it's something I've always done. I started riding back in '78 on my friend's Honda PC50 around the neighborhood. I only got my first real bike in '92. It's channels like yours that taught me a bunch of stuff that would take me a lot longer before there was UA-cam. Have fun and be safe, it's better to lose a minute in your life than your life in a minute, take care. Mike.
The problem is its very hard to show the push, because the handlebar dips down as you push so it appears like you're pulling left. Even with one finger on top of the grip rather than at the back of the grip, it looks like you're pulling. People don't understand its such a tiny tiny movement.
Basically you push or very slight turn the inside bar to tip the bike in direction to initiate turn in. Then you apply constant pressure to maintain the turning with leaning. When you come out, you apply push to the outside bar to bring the bike upright. Easy...
I’m still a little bit confused about the counter steering but experiencing my own - I find turn left then lean right and eventually straighten the handle bar to go right, and the opposite for the other way. But love the video.
Damn that sounds complicated. Thanks again Dave for another awesome video. No matter what kinda video you upload it always puts a smile on my face. When that notification comes up on my phone to say you have uploaded nothing else around me matters. Ride Safe. I saw that you put the mirror on the grom.
Lol it's simple, really. In fact, you probably did counter-steer in your life when you ride than you'd ever imagine. Counter steer is always in your subconcious when you learn to balance your bike.
When I learned what countersteering was I went to the interstate and played in the Cloverleaf interchange. If you don't know that you're countersteering you will understand the physics of it after a few minutes. Go into the turn at a normal speed and just give a little push on the left grip when you're already leaning into a right turn and you'll feel how the bike wants to dip down for a more aggressive turn. When you're ready, start into the next cloverleaf by pushing left. The bike will drop you into the lean. A right push in a right turn will stand you up and can straighten your turn.
Iv been riding for 30 years and only heard about countersteering the other day. Now I'm gonna have to test what I have been doing all my riding life without knowing I was doing it. How bizarre. Good video 👍
3rd video of counter steering. This is the one that got thru. Thanks. Im waiting to take my motorcycle class that has the riding test later. This was the only thing I was having trouble.
By looking and pushing you essentially force the bike to lean over in the direction you want to go. While the bike is stopped if you turn the handlebars to the right you will feel the bike's weight on your left thigh. The gyroscopic effect just prevents the bike from falling over while it's leaning.
Awesome! I never even noticed I already did this. I thought I was just leaning in but yeah, pushing the bars in opposite direction to steer sharply. Maybe it's best to not think about it too much now haha. Thanks for the explanation.
Out of nowhere youtube just recommends all the "countersteering" videos out there for the past week..not sure what triggered this vicious cycle of recommendations
A guy called Venrow has commented that to practice countersteering safely you buy a bicycle. However it has 35 replies and mine would get buried so I am putting it here. I can vouch for that. It really is a good idea, go on a slight downhill so you're going quick then try it. It's very sensitive though so be easy on it
The problem is the term "countersterring". It's actually FORCE BALANCE STEERING, as you are steering the handles away from the intended lean in order to keep the bike stable, but not actually have the handles turn anywhere as the lean is making the turn by itself, you are just keeping the bike from dropping. This happens naturally without you realizing it.
AnarchoHumanism... You are incorrect, sir. The action of pushing the bar tilts the bike, as you tilt the bike the rotational diameter of the tyre decreases thus effectively increasing wheel speed and gyroscopic/centripetal forces. The effect of all this means you need to consistently pressure on the inside bar. The faster you go the harder you push. The physics involved with cornering a motorbike are ridiculous.
AnarchoHumanism The term CS does confuse some people but I am not sure "force balance steering" makes it any easier to grasp and I've never encountered it before. 🤔
The concept is genuinely counterintuitive. But I realize I do the same thing on my bicycle subconsciously. Much less weight and much lower speeds makes it more natural but when greater forces are involved or takes a more conscious effort. It makes sense when you think of it in terms of shifting your and the bikes weight around instead of steering
When I heard, "I ain't no science rocket," I expected this video to be lame. I like science. The video was one of the best practical explanations I've seen of countersteering. Thank you. It helps to understand counterintuitive physics to more quickly wire up the muscle memory by practicing the maneuvers and incrementally improving the techniques.
So what I put together as a mountain biker looking into getting a motor bike is that this is really just what we refer to as carving. Least mechanically it's the same Damn it's way to easy to do something that's honestly really natural. Just go down a big hill on your bike and feel how it does when you take a moderate turn. Same idea from his motions
Thank you I am a new rider didn't even knew there is a term called counter steering and whenever someone sit beside me I was like it's hard to lean one side and ride quick and I saw others giving cuts and confidently riding and I was like why cant I do it now I know how it works I will practice it ... Thank you Peace

I was so worried about counter steering on a motorcycle when I first hear about counter steering. What I didn't know is that I've been doing it on bicycles my whole life.
I feel like people are way overthinking this... Saw a comment about motorcycle counter steering and decided to look it up. That's what I just call turning lol. Maybe because my experience is entirely on a superbike the "steering" with the bars was only something I did when navigating into and out of a parking spot. Always was natural to just push the way I wanted to go - never thought of it as "steering." Never had any sort of training or safety course before I pulled the trigger on a 1 liter superbike as a first bike. I would suspect most people asking about what it is don't realize it's exactly what they've been doing all along - they just didn't know what it was called.
Can confirm I was so confused on counter steering when I began, but not that I'm practice driving with school and private, it was like a lightbulb It became so much more obvious when I sat on a seat
