The Spirit Temple's Music in Ocarina of Time and its Real World Influences

- The Spirit Temple in Ocarina of Time is a favorite dungeon by many of the games' fans. The Spirit Temple's music is powerful in its sense of nostalgia, but also mystery. What were some of the real world influences on the Spirit Temple's architecture and its theme music, and what can we learn about the feelings the song was designed to invoke? I present to you the final video in my series on Ocarina of Time's dungeons music: The Spirit Temple's Music in Ocarina of Time and it's Real World Influences.
Music Analysis starts at 6:56
Here is an excellent article on the architecture of the temple I highly recommend: www.architectureofzelda.com/t...

It has one of the best dungeon theme intros in Zelda, probably second to the Palace of Winds.
My personal favorite dungeon theme from OoT! Just need to point out that if the instruments are to be listed in order of appearance, the dilruba would be listed before the darbuka. I just love how the first percussive note seems to hit out of nowhere in this song. Great job identifying all of them!
Thanks! Yeah sometimes I write them down as I hear them, but I mess up and hear an instrument later and it gets out of order in my script. 😅
I'm a bit late, and idk if you will do the other zelda games too, but i'd really like you to take a look at lanayru mining facility from skyward sword
Currently my plan is to do TP after I finish MM’s dungeons, but I’ll be looking into other games after that. Skyward Sword, despite being disliked by the fanbase on the whole, does have some of my favorite songs in the series. So I’m sure I’ll tackle it at some point.
Even the pots represent duality, two pots fly at you and cause damage, yet both have hearts in them that heal the damage caused
Dang, that's a good catch!! I wish I would have noticed that!
Exactly, it's kind of a joke but a perfect interpretation at the same time
Well, based on the video its sometimes Ruppee's not hearts. So paying for your damage?
@@TakumiLucius well it looks like it’s only rupees if they miss so you need to trust the pots
@@MarioFaker1 Fun fact: In most Zelda games, hearts that are coded to spawn from grass, pots and enemies will turn into green rupees if your health meter is filled.
Everything in ocarina of time is ironically timeless. Still the best game ever made to this day
I wouldn't say it's the best game ever, I'd say it's the most timeless and ageless game ever.
@@TheQuashingoftheTub It’s definitely a contender for best game
@@boblybob74 It's a contender for one of the greatest. Not the best though.
@@TheQuashingoftheTub Fair
@@TheQuashingoftheTub 94 of us seem to think otherwise 😉
I'd love to see an analysis of Majora's Mask as well as Ganon's Tower from Ocarina of Time.
Hmm, I hadn’t thought of doing Ganon’s Tower, but if I can find some sheet music for it I will. It definitely has some stuff I can talk about!
I approve.
Yes please!!
I have actually started doing the Majora’s Mask dungeons! great bay should be done later this month!
Thank you! 😅
I always loved the Spirit Temple because the soundtrack made me feel a sense of gravity and an end to the adventure was nearing and that destiny was about to collide
I'm two years late to make this joke but
That feeling was that the two pots were destined to collide with Link
"A beautiful soul living within a withered body"
You said that at the perfect moment with the music and i felt that.
😅
Kotake: "What?"
Funny as that clip from The Mummy is, I could totally see ReDeads looking like that if there was a high budget LoZ live-action film.
And I've always seen Rick and Evy as analogous to Link and Zelda. Heck, one of my big hopes for BotW 2 is that Nintendo leans into the whole "explore an ancient civilization" aspect and lets Link and Zelda finally travel on an adventure together, a la Rick and Evy in the Mummy movies (although the 2021 trailer splashed cold water on that idea).
Well well well.. Apollo has granted you the gift of prophecy lol
I may not be the first person to say this but the music NEVER feels complete unless you have the flying pots at the beginning of the song
Can't put it any better than the way he put it. "As soon as you enter the temple, you are hit by the weightiness of the song itself. ...and the two pots that slam right into you."
0:04 You forgot the sounds of the 2 pots going after Link
This is an incredible video. Crazy to think the developers in Japan drew so much from worldwide influences. Great job with this!
Now i unterstand why the spirit temple gave a sense of home and familiarity to me.
I'd love it if you kept exploring the Ocarina of Time's soundtrack. The child dungeons, Hyrule's Field, Gerudo Valley, Kokiri's Forest, Lon Lon Ranch, the bosses' theme, etc. I'm sure it would be amazing.
Is ur profile pic really the annoying owl??
@@TonyKnight1208 What? That owl from Ocarina? Nop, guess it's from something Harry Potter.
Hey listen, Kaepora Gaebora’s theme is a strong contender for things to do a video on! 😅
@@henrique88t oh lol ok my bad
I am absolutely passionate about the Gerudo Valley theme!
I don’t know what it is but I absolutely LOVE the sound of middle-eastern instruments. So hypnotic and interesting
Yeah, I listened to an awful lot of middle eastern music while doing research and I got a ton of music to chill and relax to from this.
@@SaveDataTeam any recommendations? This song is one of my all time favorite songs, not even just among video game music. I need a 1 AM UA-cam rabbit hole dive.
@@ejc5105 ua-cam.com/video/g2yKBlrU7yg/v-deo.html&ab_channel=SGrigorian this one is a nice long banger.
@@SaveDataTeam Thanks. I'll give it a listen
Bit of a shot in the dark here but give a listen to the album Mabool by an Israeli band called Orphaned Land. It masterfully combines middle eastern melodies, scales and instruments with contemporary metal. Ocean Land or The Birth of the Three would be good songs to start with.
Duduk sounds like something a Zelda enemy would be called
😅 sounds about right
I love the sound of those instruments it really makes you feel like your in a Desert Temple.
‘Duduk’s Protection is ready to roll!’
^ this is a very good joke 😂
Then to the Hylians. It is regarded as an evil instrument.
Do an analysis on Milk Bar Theme from MM. It's an hidden masterpiece ...
It totally is!! I feel like less people remember it because it was an area you barely had to visit, but it's a certified bop!
@@SaveDataTeam You can feel the melancholy of the world ending thought it, and it's cheerful at the same time. Great song :p
I agree! It's one of my favorite songs in the game, even though it's relatively short. I'd also love to see a mini episode that breaks down the warp songs in OoT. Serenade of Water is so beautiful.
^ this is a good idea. I found an interview with Kondo about how difficult it was to compose them because he really only had 5 notes to use across all of them.
@@SaveDataTeam There are more than 5 notes in the milk bar theme
I would love a reflection on the temples of Twilight Princess! That’s my childhood, I’d love to hear how the art of music helped influence how I felt about the temples as a child!
I’ve just started working on the first video for a series on Majora’s Mask, but I’m having such fun with it I have little doubt I’ll continue into twilight Princess after!
Both Majoras Mask AND twilight princess in the near future?! Buddy, you are amazing!!! 🤩
Haha, well I’m thinking of doing one of these a month, as well as other video essays, so they might not be super soon, but I anticipate the first one will be ready by the end of this week! 😅
@@SaveDataTeam I will have to replay TP for that series. It's been over 10 years since I've played through
I do want TP after MM. Then SS and after, BotW, TotK and WW
I like the theory that the goddess of the sand is actually twinrova, who convinced the gerudo to worship her while waiting for the one destined to try and conquer the triforce, i.e. Gannondorf. It fits in so well with the duality if the temple and why the hylians believe she is evil
I remember reading this theory while doing research for this video, and I can totally see that. I think the best thing about Ocarina of Time is how much is left unsaid and how so many people have been able to fill in the cracks with so many interesting and reasonable conclusions.
Almost like how the statue within the temple is a human woman with a king cobra wrapped around her; it's like the cobra is the belief of a divine natural force/goddess, and the Gerudo lady grins as she receives worship when in reality she is simply using the snake statue to pretend to be divine. It seems like a sacred beast of the desert, but truly, it's a model used by a greedy mortal person pretending to be a goddess or golden cobra or whatever.
And turns out its din
I always thought the Goddess of the Sand was how the Gerudo interpret one (or maybe all three) of the Golden Goddesses, kinda like how many cultures IRL interpret the same gods in different ways.
6:06 I suppose it's fitting that the Gerudo words are just an ancient dialect of "Waifu"
This is definitely my fav temple theme music on OOT
mine is the haunted desert and the Forest temple
Agreed
I especially love this one. I have quite the active imagination myself, and I imagine the music playing to someone being near-hopelessly lost in the desert, either from simply being exiled, or just losing track of where they were going. Its somber, sad, and relays the ruthless and scorching heat of the desert sun.
Definitely one of my favorite temple themes for that very exotic ambiance it has
Yeah, they definitely did their research with composing this one!
It amazes me how much art depicts the Hero of Time as right-handed. He was left-handed.
He could have been dual-handed, I hold poles or sticks or shovels in either hand, Link might do this too.
In the master quest version he is right handed and it threw me off so bad the one time I played
@@MessApathy After Skyward Sword Link is supposed to be ambidexterous.
@@danielolsson7134 The Hero of Time only refers to Ocarina of Time link
they only made link right handed in SS because most people are right handed and the game relies on motion control
The "this instrument is sick, but I can't play it on horseback" like is honestly gonna be iconic for me already.
It sounds like a line from a bill wurtz video.
This Instrument is Sikh, but...
Honestly, I'll watch whatever music analysis video you make! Seeing Majora's Mask would be cool, but I wouldn't mind seeing other deep dives into other game franchises and their soundtracks.
Thank you! I might stick in the realm of N64 games since that hits a particular nostalgia for me, and the hardware placed limitations on what the developers could do, which certainly makes it somewhat easier for my tiny brain to break down 😅. But yeah maybe I’ll branch out to other game series!
@@SaveDataTeam I really, really hope you’ll consider touching Chrono Trigger.
@@SaveDataTeam I don't think your brain is tiny at all! You seem very culturally informed, and musically observant. I love it ☺️
To this day I still get goosebumps when I hear the Spirit Temple OST
Same
traumatized by that redead section but this is honestly my favorite video of your series, whenever I play the spirit temple I always stop to admire it for how beautiful it is and then watching this with all this new knowledge is just so fascinating
Appreciate it, thank you! 😅
I always assumed it was a statue of the first Gerudo woman, who was eventually looked at as a deity as time went on. The Gerudo themselves have a rough reputation, so the Hylians thinking that she's evil wouldn't be a big surprise. Down the road, I started to wonder if it represented Din. No matter what, it's a fun and enjoyable mystery, and has one of my favorite dungeon songs from a Zelda game, ever.
Old comment, I know, but I do believe you’re spot on about your last comment. I do believe the Gerudo goddess is supposed to be the Gerudo version of the Goddess Din.
I know I'm eons late but that Mummy reference was EVERYTHING 😂😂
Best theme in OoT. Best temple EVER.
It's a certified BOP
Heck yeah
The spirit temple may be the reason i love deserty themes so much, especially that music
Ancient egypt and their gods were icons for occult practise. Thats why. Game, movie, art, and music industry are all influenced by it and use it. It used to be hidden in film and music videos but in the last 10 yrs its become mainstream. And i think i know why ;)
I started 2021 with a dude explaining me the ost of my favourite game. Thanks.
This is super humbling! Thank you for starting 2021 with us!
Whoever the artist is for the stills you use at the beginning of the videos, that's the aesthetic I want for an Ocarina remake.
I recall how back in the days of my youth and to this day the music of the spirit temple would hunt me in a scary but also in a strange but beautiful way almost to the point of being hypnotic and somehow i felt empowered by the strong start the moment you set foot on the temple. Will always be the best game and have the best music ever composed in the industry.
Brutal man... I love this in particular because of the Egyptian or Phrygian Dominant kinda vibe.... Its incredible how it makes you feel inside a temple... In a nameless city... The way you break down the instruments and every part of the song is just amazing.....
I hope you’ll do analysis on the dungeons from Twilight Princess too, these videos are really good and super interesting to learn from
Yeah, I've had enough people request it, so I think I'll go there after I finish this series up!
The music at 1:33 is from twilight princess
@@SaveDataTeam Would Skyward Sword also be a possibility?
Please?
You should do an analysis on the lost woods/saria's song
Ye
I've always loved desert levels in video games. The Spirit Temple is my favorite out of the five in OOT. The music fits completely and really added to my enjoyment when I first played the game. Thanks for this video!
Glad you enjoyed!
Absolutely loved playing this dungeon when I was a kid, wished it wasn't so late in the game. Original artwork is great as well. It depicts the feeling of the setting really well
We were all born with 0 knowledge. Guys let’s appreciate this guy’s great research to bring us this educative vid prolly for kicks.
Hey, if people find enjoyment from what we do here, that's enough for me! 😄
The intro melody of the song comprises a gong, layered with a chime and a synthesizer sound... The pads that support the piece throughout are synthesized, as well, possibly based on an electronically processed trumpet sound with a chorus effect...
Spirit temple definitely has the sound of a real temple compared to the other temples (other than the fire temple, though I don't believe the fire temple to have been created by the gorons, the architecture just doesn't match goron city).
Definitely my second favorite song in the game
spoilers
i think the lore for the gorons is that they basically come in and started squatting, and then the god of the fire temple got angry and started eating them so they smashed him with a hammer, and then he gets revived as the boss of the fire temple by ganondorf
explains why the fire temple is so different since it'd be a place of worship made by someone else, the nearby fairy fountains might be linked with it too.
I speculate that the Goddess of the Sand *is* Din, or an aspect of her specific to the desert. Toward the beginning of the game, the Great Deku Tree recounts the legend of Hyrule's creation, in which Din is said to have created "the red earth." At this point in the cutscene, we see the canyon leading to Gerudo Valley--simple re-use of assets I'm sure, but noteworthy in context; in any case, the rocks of both Gerudo Valley and the desert have a distinct reddish hue. Note also that Din is associated with fire, which symbolically links her to the hot, dry climate of the desert and harsh sun conditions, and besides the numerous Egyptian-style sun motifs in the Spirit Temple, many of the puzzles involve fire or sunlight and sun imagery. Finally, Din's Triforce virtue, Power, is the one most associated with the combat-ready and proud Gerudo people. I think the ancient ancestors of the Gerudo primarily worshiped Din and developed iconography for her that they saw in the environment around them and readily associated with Power: suns, birds of prey, and serpents.
adding to the duslity/“light and darkness” point- the snake statues’ wording also plays into this, like “the pure heart of a child”
I'm 20 I remember playing this when I was 15 and the song of storms is a song I will never forget
Hooray! This is one of my favorite series on UA-cam
absolutely my favorite temple piece in OoT. Due in no small part to hearing a clip from the title screen transitions and realizing how far I'd come since starting the game :,,,,)
It has a unique feeling of playing it as both young and adult link too. Really such a fantastic level.
Holy crap, so much research~ This is so brilliant! You're AMAZING!
Awesome video bro! This is one of my favorite temples and temple music.
Hey I’m here from your ad! It popped up on a Brian David Gilbert Unraveled video! Very fitting :)
I really love this type of content on video games so you’ve def got my subscription :D

Duduk makes this song great! It makes it excellent!
Been listening to a lot of the old video game music I loved from games I played in the 90s-2000s. Watched both this and your video about the water temple and Fire Temple music. Really nicely written and presented ;)
I'm super impressed at both your research as well as Nintendo's. I always loved the music in Ocarina of Time, but this made our even better.
Glad you enjoyed! This series has deepened my appreciation for the series as well! 😅
I adore the fact you historically break down these videos before getting into the music! It gives us such a well-rounded view and appreciation of all the work that went into the designs and music!
Thanks for the work you put into these great videos!my husband and I both found your channel at the same time, and he's a huge fan!
Aw thank you very much!
I just stumbled randomly on this video and on your channel, and I absolutly love. Keep up the good work !
Awesome! Thank you!
Oh, I'll always love that theme, such a masterpiece!
One of the best Zelda themes
Thank you for this series! It's been really fun and ive been looking forward to every single one of them. Majoras Mask being my favorite Zelda game by far, I'd love you to continue with analyzing its music, maybe even tracks from other places in the game? I'm just always excited for MM content tbh.
One Zelda game where the soundtrack really struck me was Skyward Sword. It's been a long time since I've played, but the OST always stuck with me because it was so outstanding in my opinion. I'd love to see analysis on that!
For all it’s problems, Skyward Sword does have some of my favorite music in the whole series! Someone else suggested doing music in other places in the game, so I may do that too. I’ll probably focus on other topics for video essays for a short while, but I’ll definitely return to music analysis at some point. I enjoy the combination of presenting actual information and making stupid jokes that I seem to have down in this series. 😅
I love to learn about what makes song. Good work on the video.
Awesome video, really well done
You're not done with the series yet! Malon's Ranch, inside the castle, the potion shop, Zorron's domain... you've just started my friend!
A samples video would be amazing! Also when you’re done with majoras mask maybe you could explore some of the non temple music, like the gerudo valley theme, how it is flamenco music but still fits into the middle east environment because of flamenco’s roots (among other things) in arabic music
Thank you! Yeah, I might go back after I wrap up MM and do some of the other highly requested songs!
@@SaveDataTeam sounds good, they videos have been really good so far, looking forward to the rest. even great bay temple, although i can’t stand that level

It would be pretty cool to see you do Majora's Mask next, but also other franchise's music too ^^
