Why the Temple of Time's Theme in Ocarina of Time is such an Amazing Piece of Zelda Music

- The Temple of Time is one of the most frequented locations in Ocarina of Time. Just off the Hyrule Town Square sits a sacred, holy place, that not only contains the Master Sword, but has an equally divine piece of music to accompany it. But what inspired the development team behind Ocarina of Time to design the Temple of Time this way, and how did Koji Kondo compose the music for the Temple of Time's Theme? The Answer, may not surprise you, taking inspiration from Gregorian Chant! Please enjoy the next entry in our Zelda music analysis series on The Temple of Time. This time we focus on Ocarina of Time's Temple of Time and the Temple of Time's Music Theory Analysis. Sorry it's been so long since the last Legend of Zelda Music Analysis video, time sort of got away from me (again), but I hope you enjoy the newest Ocarina of Time Music Theory, and that it makes clear why the Temple of Time's Theme in Ocarina of Time is such an Amazing Piece of Music.

Around minute 16, you play the 3rd phrase of the Temple of Time theme, and the scored note in measure 3 of that line is a low C, but the audio is a D. Not trying to be pedantic, but just wanted to share since that's another example of the final appearing in the piece!
So happy these are making a comeback!! Great video
Played the original as a kid. I was capable of beating the early temples and bosses easy enough, but without a guide I was relying on asking my friend at school where to go next. The times I didn't know where to go next, I'd go to the temple wondering why it was so empty, what was behind the door, what was the secret of it? All with that atmospheric chant in the background. It felt very special. Ahhh the days you couldn't watch a walkthrough and no choice but to truly get lost in a game.
Can't wait for you to cover Twilight Princess ot my favorite Breath of the Wild's main theme.
Super glad you guys came out with another of these! Please don’t let it be the last! This series of videos got me into music, analogy, and history in games. Now I can’t seem to scratch that itch because I’ve watched them all multiple times.
Please sir, can I have some more?
The sheer fact that he was able to make 12 unique songs out of one mode of only 5 notes to lead off is worthy of a video on its own.
.. funny enough, someone already did a video of that exact concept you mentioned. Although, I'm always game to see other musically inclined people put their own takes and input on their interpretation of the artform! {:
Edit: It's actually mentioned in the video. The video by 8-bit covers this very idea.
Edit #2: I'm dumb. That's a different video, but same person. 8-bit did a whole spiel on the brilliance of writing a bunch of melodies using only five notes. It's actually given me some ideas in my own compositional journey!
not to mention majora's mask
never actually thought about that and considering this is one of the most iconic soundtracks of all time thats extremely impressive
@@Risen907 I know it's a cliche phrase, but "Restrictions Breed Creativity" is pretty true of most of the arts. Whether you're a creative writer who does daily writing prompts to focus yourself or a music composer restricting yourself to composing using only three instruments (to emulate how 8-bit music only had three channels), oftentimes those restrictions really force the creative mind to go above and beyond in order to produce within the limits.
Although, admittedly, it is pretty stressful as well when you're also on a time crunch.
Zelda game according to Nintendo it's good but we need to put this song somewhere and now it's in almost every game
Much needed video series returns to 2023. This is going to be epic. Keep them coming.... Please.
I didn't even realized it till I read your comment XD
When I was a kid playing on the N64, any time I got frustrated with a dungeon or scared by a certain area's ambiance (lookin' at you, Tomb of the Royal Family), I'd take a break from OoT's main story and just go vibe in the Temple of Time. It reminded me of the cathedral where my parents and I attended Mass every week, so it was familiar and soothing to me, without losing any of its grandeur or mystery. I've loved all the videos in this series, but I'm especially happy that the Temple of Time was the subject of your triumphant return to these essays. Really looking forward to more!
It's so cool that you have such a good memory, with family nonetheless. I hope you live more good moments so your life has a great collection of good memories!
Tomb of the Royal Family? It's been ages since I played so what area is that referring to? Shadow Temple?
@@gracenote108 It's an area beneath Kakariko Graveyard. You reach it by playing Zelda's Lullaby in front of the Royal Family's gravestone. Making your way through it rewards you with the Sun's Song, which freezes Re-Deads and allows you to skip forward to either morning or night. The Tomb mostly terrified me as a kid because of the aforementioned Re-Deads lol.
@@nikibogwater6598 I genuinely risked it all and just jumped through the acid pools to avoid them, honestly. I understand the fear.
I just hope your family didn't find its portrayal blasphemy.
Temple of Time might be the most impactful song in OoT. Not my favorite but certainly moving in a very spiritual way.
There’s a reason all of us slow walked through that area as kids
The Temple of Time always felt like a special place. I would often just slow walk through the hall just to take in the song and ambiance. It’s honestly astonishing to recognise what an achievement the songs were in OOT, especially when you learn just how many limitations there were.
I can still instantly recall at least half of the songs from OOT some 25 years later.
I did too..
I did too
I did as well.
Yup we all did that “slow walk”….. it was like a right of gaming passage back in the day
I think using 5 notes for many of the songs worked in their favor. The songs are simple, beautiful, and most of all memorable. Limitation often breeds creativity and I definitely think that is the case here. The music in OoT is probably my favorite of any game ever. It just adds so much. I also love how you can change the pitch of the ocarina with the joystick. Adding that was a nice little tidbit that they could have easily foregone, and I'm glad they didnt.
Very cool to see this series return! The Temple of Time music is definitely one of the most memorable tracks to originate in OOT, and I love how the simpleness of it plays so well into its use ingame as the Song of Time.
So many Bible spoilers in this video!
😅
@@SaveDataTeam you said you'd do Final Hours from Majora's Mask 2 years ago! Please!
I've always loved how this song can feel so haunting, yet strangly calming at the same time. It really is the perfect atmospheric piece. And Koji Kondo was a genius. I can't imagine how much time and effort must have gone into this. All the history was really interesting, especially about the architecture of the temple. You've helped me gain a new appreciation for one of the best songs in one of my favorite games. Thank you.
Thank you for the kind words 😁
I decided to do a comfort rewatch of these recently and was happy to see a few more new ones! Then I go back to finish the Playlist and find ANOTHER new video added? So glad this series is continuing lol
I love to rewatch these videos too
This is wonderful. I know Koji Kondo is a legend, but now I understand a little more about how exactly he got there. This man did his homework.
The Temple of Time was such a cool place with an absolutely breathtaking theme. The devs knew this too, since when you revisit it in Twilight Princess they reuse the exact same theme for the beginning area of the Temple.
I remember listening to this song when I first entered the Temple of Time as a kid, that was a magical experience. Thanks for making an analysis video on it, I always enjoy learning about the real-world inspiration behind my favorite games.
Same here!!!
Early Christian churches didn’t have seats or pews. They came in during the 16th century. Go into most Orthodox churches today and they don’t have pews. So the layout of the Temple of Time resembles a church more than most actual churches!
So glad to see Temple of Time’s track get the attention it deserves. I will never forget the first time playing OoT when I entered that hallowed building, playing as a Catholic child the sense of holiness and reverence it inspired so unexpectedly was moving
Most UA-cam videos numb my mind, but your Zelda videos actually inspire creativity inside of me. Thank you.
Thank you so much for the kind words! 😁
Sometimes simple works best. I needed a church song for my DnD campaign and was looking all over for it. I eventually came across a half hour long version of a remix of this song.
Yeah, hearing that while walking into a large basilica housing a dragon skeleton revered as a holy creature has an impact.
I don't suppose you still have a link?
As someone who sings Gregorian chant every Sunday, this was well done! Thank you for taking the time to look into it as remains my favorite music to sing. One thing I love in the chant notation is that all of the notes are relative, so it is very easy to change the starting pitch to fit your group.
When I was in my early teenage years, this was one of the songs I used to play in order to help me get to sleep! The song of time, regardless of Chant or Ocarina form just holds a special place in my heart!
Well-researched, well-written, well-delivered. 7/10
Thank you 😂
Been waiting for this series to continue. One of the best playlists on UA-cam.
Fingers crossed for those big numbies because I'd love to see more video essays in the future! I learned a fair bit about the history of the Catholic Church, music, and architecture, which I didn't expect from today but am quite delighted by!
Thank you very much! 😁
Bring this series back ASAP PLEEEEEASE!
I am always checking for your new Zelda music theory deep dives!!!
So happy to see another one of these videos. This series is one of my personal favorites on this channel.
I also really like the attention to some of the historical details regarding both the temple's design and the in game music.
The parallels to churches and cathedrals for the temple are very fitting considering that in the German translation of the game (that being the version I grew up with) the temple of time is called the "citadel of time"
The same goes for the song of time, with it being compared to hymns. Because once again, in the German translation the track is straight up called "the hymn of time"
Really makes me appreciate and love the German translation even more. And massive props to the translators for putting in so much detail regarding architecture history. (I think at least. I'm not really into architecture)
Oh the German word choice is really cool!! Thank you for sharing that!
The sound of Link's little footsteps tippy-tapping through the Temple of Time with the gorgeous melody in the backgroun....*chef's kiss*
I LOVE these deep dives. It makes me appreciate the craft of this game even more.
I don't know if you are still reading comments these many months later, but I want you to know that I love these videos. OOT remains my favorite LOZ game. And you keep your videos engaging enough to keep my boys interested. And we have been studying music and music theory thanks to and with the help of your videos.
So thank you for all the hard work you put in for us
Aside from the fact that domes were actually rediscovered back in the Early/High Renaissance period by Brunelleschi, most of the history research for this video is spot on! Really appreciate the beauty of the Legend of Zelda looking at it from a deeper, historical perspective :D
Years ago, I once attended evening mass at St. James Cathedral in Seattle on Saturday night. After mass was over, it's common for some people to stick around for a bit and pray. I listened to this track on my ipod and just sat in the dim, spacious Cathedral. It is a very fond memory. I have always loved this track.
In high school we had to write a Gregorian chants. I used this as a reference.
That’s amazing lol
I'm so happy to see you do another analysis video on Legend of Zelda music! I missed them! Also liked the background information on the church history and construction that influenced the Temple of Time environment design. If you do another one of these, I would LOVE it if you did an analysis of the soundtrack, Final Hours from Majora's Mask. It's so beautifully haunting, that I would love to hear what makes it tick and why it works so well.
Love the inclusion of the Dive to the Heart theme in the architecture segment
Yes! Would love a deep dive into some of Yoko Shimomura's music!
I love these videos. I've watched each one multiple times! Looking forward to the next one (fingers crossed there will be more). One quick thing though, at 15:56 the note shows a "C" but a "D" is heard. That note matches the last note in pitch but is written differently. No big deal, just thought I'd mention it in case it confused anybody. Once again, love the content! I wish this series and your channel success!
I was looking for this lmao.
first time I had use of my knowledge about Gregorian Chorals from school, very well done
Small correction at 12:47 (apologies if others have already pointed this out). Time signatures don't indicate the tempo, they merely indicate the number of beats per measure, and the length value of each beat. The tempo is however indicated just above the time signature. In the case of your example, using the phrase "Allegro moderato," which suggests a moderately brisk tempo (anywhere from 96-120 bpm). Some sheet music may specify the exact bpm (beats per minute) if the composer wants.
That aside, stellar content! I love music analyses like this.
I love coming back to this series every so often. I'm always glad to see a new video! Can't wait for more!
I thought I had somehow missed this one in your other Zelda stuff, but no, you just returned to it after a year, what a pleasant surprise. I'd definitely listen to more of these!
I marathoned your entire Dungeon Music Analysis playlist in preparation for this video, and I love how professional they are, and how much research went into all of them. You did a great job with this series, and I'd love to see more someday.
Thank you so much!
I'm so pumped to see a new video come out in this series! You dive into the depths of Zelda music like nobody else. I sincerely hope you consider making more of these, I loved the ones you did on the OoT and MM dungeons!
I really appreciate your musical and architectural analysis on each temples! I'm doing some research on OOT temples and structures and find these videos super useful!
I hope you continue this series! I'd love to see you expand into other Zelda games as well :)
That's the plan, it just becomes an issue with figuring out a way to break the pieces apart sound by sound. But I'm sure I can find a way.
This theme holds so much for me personally. It would always be the very first thing I’d heard booting up the game after a long week. I played this game for an incredibly long time on my first experience and as such, this theme got essentially engraved in my brain and I look back at it with a feeling of nostalgia, and eagerness to get back into the world of Hyrule to see what I could complete.
I implore you to find Rebecca Tripps version on youtube, it's absolutely stunning
I have loved the sound of Gregorian chanting ever since I was a little kid. I would walk slowly through the temple of time to listen to it any time I was there.
This video is impressive and humbling. I was just talking to someone earlier tonight about various Zelda lore/theory channels and how curious they make me regarding what kind of fruit such dedication, memorization, and passion would bear if it were poured into reading/studying and interpreting the Bible instead of lore/theory videos about a video game. And here your video shows up to bridge the gap between the two.
I was so excited when I saw this in my feed. Though I’ve had to quit and come back a few times, but now am watching it in full, I’m still excited. Would love to see more. Also low key enjoy when you’re talking about Zelda with Kingdom Hearts music playing sometimes
YES! I have been waiting patiently for another of these videos! Thank you so much! I love these videos!
Thank you! 😁
I know very little about music theory and architecture, but I find them both enjoyable and fascinating. These are some of my favorite videos on UA-cam because you explain these two subjects so well centered around one of my favorite franchises ever. Thank you!
Glad to see you back making these videos! Please make more of them!
Discovered your video essays on Zelda music late last year and they've been some of my favorite analytical content on UA-cam. Would love to see more!
Thank you! I don’t plan to take as long of a break for the next one! 😁
I love your insights on the Zelda games' music. Thanks for the amazing update.
I was so excited to see a new video in this vein! Thank you !
The timing of these videos is so hilarious. Last time, you analyzed the spanish influence and the influence of the moors behind Gerudo Valley, when we had exactly that in our Spanish classe. This time, I have to hold a presentation about the middle age, including its architecture and you upload this video 😂 Thank you so much for helping me in my educaion haha
Haha, glad to help you out!
my favorite series so far, please keep doing this, love the effort in every one of these
Love this series, I hope it continues to cover more Zelda songs. In particular could you cover the song of healing sometime in the near future. Being a small song maybe you can do a video covering it with some other smaller tunes to make a full video if there's just not enough to talk about. But I do love learning not just about the music but the culture behind the settings and history that you provide.
Love these videos so much, please continue more music analysis for oot! 🎉
LOVE THESE! So happy you are still posting these 🎉 you're such a cool person!
I always loved just sitting in the temple of time and listening to the music for a while when first playing on the N64. Great essay!
I really love your deep dive into the music, I've always enjoyed when the music can invoke certain feelings to match the atmosphere and storytelling of the game (or movie) Thank you so much for making this one, and I really hope you make more!!!!
More will come. I’m hoping to not take such a big break this time 😅
i love these type of videos, especially the extra attention to detail and history :)
Thank you! 😁
so excited to see this series return. great research, great info, keep up the good work
OMG THANK YOU FOR BRINGING THE SERIES BACK
Glad you did another one of these! “The perfect atmospheric song in a video game doesn’t exis-“ Love it!
This song reminds me of all the times i used to try to do the temple of time master sword door glitch because getting past all the kid dungeons was so hard for little me, thank you so much for these videos! I learn so much from them❤
this was so fun to watch! ironically, we just finished our romanesque unit in my art history class, so i got so excited when you pointed out all the architectural references! this makes me appreciate OoT even more than I already do; the devs really did their research. thank you for keeping up this series!
Oh that’s awesome! 😁 thanks for the kind words!
Loved all the extras, glad to see this series still going
Bruh, I love these vids specifically, please do more in the near near future. 🙏💯🔥
YAY!!! YOU ARE BACK!!! Looking forward to this for so long! ♥♥♥
Thanks for putting out another Zelda music analysis!!! Love this series!
Thank you! 😁
OMG I was waiting for one of these for so long! Thank you for putting out these fire video essays!!!!
Thank you 😁
Awesome job as always, man. I love these.
I found this channel through the zelda videos, and I'm so glad to see them return! You knocked it out of the park with this one, and you should feel proud 😊
Thank you so much!! 💜
Loved to see all the work that went into this!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Probably one of the best pieces of music in the game in my opinion! I am so happy you did a video! And I can’t wait to see more!
I couldn't believe it was you making another one of this at first. I actually thought someone was using your idea to do some more videos. Keep it going!
Please keep on doing theses vid essays! They are amazing, so it this the gotta thank’em all song! Brilliant!!!!
Thank you! I'll def have another one out in a shorter period of time than last time!
People who write and create music are truly amazing! I really enjoyed all your research and knowing the history behind the architecture and music!
Thank you! 😁
I hope to see you do more dungeons soon! Love this series so much.
I love these analysis videos it's why I subbed to begin with. So please keep making them!!!
i remember when i was in middle school and played Ocarina of Time 3d for the first time, i used to just leave my 3ds on in the Temple of Time to listen to the music because i found it really relaxing
Please do more of these videos! i enjoy them so much
Will do! 😀
Sooooo glad to see this series return! Would love to see more!
My favourite style of video here, hope the series continues :)
It will!
I'm SO SO SO SO SO SO SO SO glad you're doing these again! I scream at people about this playlist if they even mention Legend of Zelda!
Thanks for being you
I love these music analysis videos! They are always so interesting!
Thank you! 😄
Fantastic work as always. I'd love to see your analysis of Oath to Order.
Thank you so much for these videos. I used to major in music and LoZ is my favorite game. These help with my anxiety (except for maybe the Shadow Temple one 😂) because I don’t struggle to focus. I’ll be looking out for more like these!
Please keep this going. I’m eager to see your analysis of Wind Waker dungeons and beyond!
This is one of the video series that roped me into watching UA-cam on a regular basis, so I guess take that as encouragement
Thank you very much!
This song makes me think of time (of course). The man wrote a song that encapsulate entropy itself in sound. And the vocal track adds to the stone white spacious vibe.
Nice!!! Was waiting for this series to continue! ❤
As a kid my mind would go wild while listening to this game's soundtrack. This particular track always made me think of the middle ages where monks are singing gregorian chants in a mysterious castle that might be otherworldly or exist outside time and space. It's really hard to put into words but it still transports me far away from daily life and the current moment.
I honestly love these videos!!! Please never stop
I love this videos! Keep them coming!
Love your videos my friend I learn so much plus really entertained
I’m happy this series is back, it’s really cozy to me for some reason.
Glad your back! I love these 👍🏽
Thank you!
I had to study romanesce and gothic architecture when I was an art major.
Wouldn't have guessed that would come in handy now.
These throw back music videos are incredible and bring me so much joy!!! can you please do more, maybe from Wind Waker and Twilight Princess!!
This was both insightful and fun to listen to. I don't know a lot about Music Theory, but I'm fascinated by it! Thank you for putting this video out. I dunno if it seemed boring to you as a topic, but I absolutely LOVED it. There have been times I just stood in the Temple of Time to listen to this .... I dunno, hardly interesting song, but.... I was memorized by it. Now, I think I know why. Something in it resonates in my heart, through my body to reach out to my soul... It's amazing
Very well done! Learned a lot and, most importantly, got to listen to the Temple of Time theme. So gorgeous.
Thank you!
YYEYEEEEAAAAHHH I LOVE YOUR ZELDA MUSIC THEORY VIDEOS I love music theory and being able to know these things about some of my favorite pierces of music is literally so cool like I can't even put it into words it just makes me so happy aaaa
Thank you! 😁
