  • Little introductory guitar soloing exercise to play over a chorus section of What A Beautiful Name by Hillsong Worship. For a student who'd like to throw down some blistering guitar playing in church some day. More power to him. :)
These are simple, yet effective ideas that help with learning how to create a solo from scratch using just the chord changes as your only harmonic or melodic reference. The POINT is to begin the process of creating a simple solo in order to study how to use chord tones as target notes, NOT to go and create the world's greatest guitar solo replete with finger tapping, sweep picking, 32nd note runs, pick slides, whammy bar abuse, dive bombs, pick-tossing into the crowd, feedback, lighter fluid, windmills, guitar smashing etc. At least not right off the bat.
Other than chord tones there's a short D major pentatonic run (D E F# A B) played F# to F# which targets the major 3rd of the D major chord. Just about everything here reflects the chord tones using roots, major 3rds, and 5ths primarily. And yes, this approach can be a bit dry and pedantic but it's an important step to playing off the cuff. Another is to learn as many solos you can or just to meander around the fretboard and find ideas by ear. All important. And let's not forget, learning the melody of the song, not to mention the melody of lots of songs.
I lead into the "solo section" from a Bridge section. Can lead into it from a Verse section as well but figured it would have more impact after a Bridge. Six of one, etc...
So, a "solo" is smooshed over the chorus chords. BTW, before you launch into your big guitar solo and go all "guitar hero" in church you might want to clue in the rest of the band..............................or not! ; )
Also, for a great example of a magnificently melodic guitar solo check out Neal Schon's solo on Still They Ride for inspiration. Actually, anything by Schon is well worth studying.
Thanks and any suggestions would be appreciated. Leave a comment too.
    UA-cam seems to like that.
