UK pop rock outfit the 1975 returns with the most bloated pop record I've heard so far this year. A few decent tracks on it, tho.

Y'all know this is just my opinion, right?
now we have audio of anthony saying "i like it when you sleep"
Also "please be naked"
Review the 1975 album already
😕
+Jesse Ferguson not richard ashcroft review why ?
+Jesse Ferguson idgi would actually like it if someone explained the joke to me.
+WEAREPLAGUED The 1975 album (Deluxe Edition) has almost 40 tracks on it (though the bonus content is a mix of EPs and Remixes)
+buk lao Because he's reviewed loads of other "tasteless pieces of garbage"
no no no,review the year 1975,not the band...
nice
I hope you've become more clever over the past 2 years.
fuck you henrique with an h,the 1975 is a great band

GINSHINKZL s I’m 14 and this album title is kinda creepy
@@silverfascia Im 14 and i dont care about the title of the album, and i hate this album

I'm convinced that you just hate everything I love, and vice versa.
Beyond ARTV I come to anthony for facts not his opinions and to you for awesome music
I have a theory on partially why your guys' tastes are so different!!! Out of the four big music critics I've followed for a while now, that of which are coverkillernation, Antknee here, YOU, and Crash Thompson, there are unique vantages in which each pair of y'all looks at music; CKN and Antknee tend to veer off towards musical/sonic innovation and progression (i.e. loving artists like Swans and Death Grips and hating Green Day), while you and Crash veer off towards lyrical proficiency and sonic viscera to varying degrees (i.e. loving artists like Billie Joe Armstrong and Matthew Healy and dismissing Stefan Burnett). Keeping in mind that you admirers of poetry and prose were raised in somewhat strictly religious (Christian) environments and these innovation junkies were, I'm just assuming, not raised in it, my theory is that you were somewhat forced to read into the lyrics of music of interest to avoid having it censored by whatever religious authority, priming lyrics to be the point of first impression whereas Anthony just liked whatever was innovative and cool (which during his teen years was Nu metal, Industrial, and *gags a little bit* post-grunge xD ). It could also have something to do with the simple fact that you keep your genre scope relatively small to Anthony's desire to like all general brands of music he can (in other words, Anthony's is forced to be more picky based on the bigger listening load), but I just kinda noticed that over time and thought it was interesting.
Also, to give MY two cents on THIS album: I absolutely fuckticiously adore some of the singles here (like "She's American" and "The Sound") as well as some of the "deep cuts" ("If I Believe You", "Nana", and "Please Be Naked", to be exact), but the album as a whole is a unorganized clusterfuck of sounds that keep the album from being enjoyably cohesive for me. "She Lays Down" should have either been a little more produced or released as a B-Side, and should have NOT have been the closing track ("Please Be Naked", "Lostmyhead", or "Nana" would have been perfectly fit for that spot IMO). Also, the title track (and the album's title) are complete bullshit.
Also, HI JON FROM ARTV!!!
doolittl hit the nail on the head
doolittl The reason John is a good critic/reviewer and what brings me back to his videos is the fact that his taste IS so different to that of most critics. Beyond this he does a good job of supporting his opinions. I respect that he likes the music he likes and isn't afraid to share his opinions even though they are unpopular to much of the Internet music scene.
Akash Dave He is stating exactly what you don't want. His opinions. Just because Anthony says something doesn't make it so.
MC Ride: Hi
Anthony Fantano: 10/10
How did he not talk about somebody else one of the best songs on the album
Glodmg •
ikr its annoying. He also didnt mention the lyrics on the AM review
When he doesn't talk about a track it's usually because he has nothing to say about it, it doesn't stand out to him in any particular way.
Glodmg • agreed I was thinking the same thing omfg
Cus it's a bland boring ass song.
OR THE HEARTBREAKING SHE LAYS DOWN!!
I tell you what, I went to see them the other night (had a free ticket), and they did possibly the most visually appealing show I'd ever seen.
They put a lot of effort into their aesthetics.
agree but they also perfom very well
I literally watch this guy just to get pissed off
Morgan Kennedy I'm just picturing your profile pic as you say that 😂
Hahaha yeah I totally took that picture after watching one of his videos for a genuine look of anger 😂😂
Morgan Kennedy Someone's triggered
hahaha when you're right, you're right.
I understand that but this is just his opinion. He looked for more depth, creativity, meaning and originality in the music which I guess he couldn't find.
You rated this higher than TPAB? wtf
yeah
+Mike Lange whoa
don't even fucking try to steal my comment nigga
+Vinay Arun lol this comment ain't original bro

Edit:Anthony Fantano is a big fan of the channel
cmon Paris was so good
My favourite The 1975 song
I honestly would argue that their sound is quite distinctive, like it or not
+COSMOB3AR Peter Gabriel.
+COSMOB3AR dude chill out you're on every comment trying to defend this band with all that you can. The 1975 is not impervious to criticism chill out
m83
COSMOB3AR Huey Lewis and the news, also every other cheesy 80s band with a clean guitar sound of which there were like 450
Yeah I agree, to me their sound is very unique
I've heard a lot of things (good and bad) about this album and the 1975 in general but to say they don't have a distinct sound?? like wtf
+Jillian Elaine LMAO OK
+Charlotte Hayes That comment wasn't me. My account must have been left logged in on somebody's computer. None of the comments made earlier today were me, which is why I just deleted them., I've been at work all day wtf.
+Jillian Elaine ok
+Charlotte Hayes have had this album in my car since it came out and nearly every person who I've had in it since then has picked up it was the 1975
Jillian Elaine - that happens to me too!!! I thought I was the only one. I really hate it when whoever writes the youtube reviews go out and maxes out my credit cards. they are sneaky little bastards. can you teach me how to delete them, please. I barely know how to type. thanks.
I've actually always thought that they had a distinct "The 1975" sound. Also I love a change of heart- it's simple but the lyrics are so well thought out and connect with some of their other songs
Yh it’s sound great
Yo....the sax solo on "This Must Be My Dream" was magic. Fawk you mean???
that wasn't enough to save the whole song
True this makes it a massive tune
I completely agree!
Jamal Aalo its actually spelled 'fuck you mean', but just saying.
Absolutely! The saxophone solo only makes that song better. He's also wrong when he said the sax is a tired trope on the album when it has only been present on She's American until this song.
I know this review is 6 years old but this is one of my top 5 albums of all time honestly (The 1975 is also one of my favorite bands of all time)
My fav 1975 record!!!
Same my favorite album from them other than bfiafl
If I Believe You is easily the best and most memorable
No the RNB influence was not accidental, Matt Healy the lead singer loves 90s RnB.
I watched this review and then I watched the video for "The Sound" and was astounded because they basically acknowledge every single criticism of their style, a lot of which Anthony actually mentioned in this review. They even mentioned Huey Lewis!
@Kyle Knockaert edgy

Its from the song lets eat.
I'm pretty sure Carly Rae Jepsen's Emotion gets brought up more in Fantano's reviews than any other record and I'm here for it

I honestly think this album is fantastic
Rewatching this makes me think he's gonna rinse NOACF
Lmao he did, F
at least this is a halfway decent album from the 1975, the only album I can say I truly love from them is the self titled and i’m a huge fan of them still
i’m just wondering how he rated notes higher than this-
i like it when yaa sleep antnee
hello ! how are you my fren !
"somebody else" is my favorite song from the album
(In my opinion) the last two tracks weren't uninteresting, just softer. These were probably the most emotional and honest songs on the entire lp and that can be heard in both the lyrics and the manor in which the vocals are delivered.
Quick note, change of heart is a song that talks about their change of sound and has multiple references to songs from their debut album on it. Its a great song for the fans.
Idk why The 1975 fans begged for him to review it, they had to have seen this coming lmao
Hahaha yes...true
+Daniel Robinson I was one of those begging for it, and I just kind of wanted to see him savage it, TBH. I got pretty much the same out of it as he did - it started off amazing and got worse as the album dragged on. It's always fun hearing Fantano rip on things he doesn't like.
That’s why they did it.
Hey Anthony this isn't the first time I've requested this but can you review Kano's made in the manor , he's a UK rapper who I'm sure you would enjoy similar to kendrick
^^This!
+Chris Richardson NO NO NO. UK rappers are shit, when are you going to see that?
+briganda13 listen to the album before you judge it's actually a very good project
+Chris Richardson nah. too cringey
+Mattenance said similar in terms of 't shirt weather in the manor' yeah he hasn't got anything on kendrick but in terms of topics yeah
Jared Fogle has stated that he loves the 1975, do we really want our kids listening to this type of music?
😂😂
+clayton hogg I'm glad you understand too
+clayton hogg This guys smart.
He knows about logic and stuff.
+clayton hogg the joke -------->

+Johnny Torpedo I like that profile picture
Come on now, the 1975 is quite original. Pretty easy to identify one of their songs, especially off this album..
drawperfectvideo8 lol they're unoriginal garbage. Who would want to identify wi- oh. Ok.
drawperfectvideo8 -- you're not familiar with top 40 music? oh...ok...got it
I like the band, but their sound is anything but original
Find me a band that sounds like The 1975
@@ryano4784 m83
I've listened to it over 35 times.... I'd say 2.5/10 tbh
Why did you listen to it that many times if you hated it?
+Trynottoblink I think he realizes its bad but he still listens to it
As a longtime fan, I actually agree with you on most points and think this is a fair review. They could have trimmed down the instrumentals, reordered a couple songs, and perhaps done without the last two songs completely (not my personal favorites) and it would've been a much more succinct album. I was a huge fan of their first album primarily because of its distinct sound that I came to associate The 1975 with, and it seems like that sound is a bit lost in this album although you can still hear remnants of it. I like that they're experimenting with a newer sound, though, and I still think their musicianship is extraordinary.
80s music isnt new tho? lol
Lostmyhead was also a song they wrote before they were even called The1975. Its had a little bit of postwork done since but its still almost identical to what it was so many years ago.
This has to be one of the worst, most pretentious album titles ever
+speer every loser hipster band does that now
+speer The Idler Wheel Is Wiser than the Driver of the Screw and Whipping Cords Will Serve You More than Ropes Will Ever Do....this is not
+speer that was their point
+Aron Lewis what the fuck does 'hipster band' even mean? The 1975 are huge and mainstream, how are they in any way hipster
Feckling i think your confusing underground with hipster. Hipster and 'rap' ARE the mainstream now. Teenagers dont want to hear bland party pop songs, they want to feel 'cool' and 'original' and thats what this kind of music does. It's perfect because it can be appreciated from a music lovers, song writers view point and it can ALSO appeal to little girls who want to feel like a real 'rock chick' and 'hipster' with a band with a swoon worthy front man, it's the best of both worlds for them.

I don't even like the kind of pop-alternative genre thing The 1975 have? I don't listen to a lot of poppy music, 'cause that's just not my shit. I thought the last album was great, but I thought this one was even better.
If I Believe You stood out to me a lot because of my love for Antichrist on the last album. She Lays Down was also a favorite because Matty doesn't do a lot of soft, acoustic stuff and release it. Many of my favorite artists are releasing albums this year, but I Like It When You Sleep is probably going to be my favorite.

Some valid criticisms here, I personally feel it's a solid 7/10. It's definitely ambitious, and it can't always deliver on those ambitions. It loses some steam after the halfway point. But I've always personally felt that this sort of cheesey, sophomoric attempt at creating something artistic is (and always has been) a staple of rock and pop music. It's stupid, meaningless affluence in the guise of something genuine. It's excessive and self-serving. Just like the music industry in the 70's and 80's.
In a way, it almost seems to be trying to subvert those tropes by embodying them to a fault. In the same way that 69 Love Songs is an album *about* love songs, I feel like this record is an album *about* musical excess and pretentiousness. And I think it's done that rather well.
Exactly bro i love their style so much
+Alex Miller Not surprising when the leader sexual aura (or urban lil tarzan) seems an important part of the interest in the band... i mean girls will screamo at their next tour like neva before...
+ The singer is a well known cocaine user so... it gets all logical with the toooften unoriginal mid 80s oriented music ... it's like a car who seems stunning and shining from the outside... but disappoint a bit once you roll with it...
It's all about the 80s and Reagan days... when appearance was usually more important than the substance (thanx to highway white lines).
I do not understand the name of this band! ... i've made two playlists of the year 1975 and musically mid 70s records are 1000 miles away from this mancunian band... whatever genre is... their name is an absurd lie !
+Starry&Bohemian The name comes from a diary the lead singer found that was dated The 1975. He said he thought it was odd to put The in front of a year so they just started calling the band that. They had like 10 names before that though
Killa Milla56 I still think that they should have used another name... it can confuse people that cannot understand easily...
I thank you for your explanation
Starry&Bohemian You're welcome.
I love how y'all were anticipating this even though we app knew it was going to be below a 5 ahahaha

As a fan of The 1975 for years, I can tell a 1975 "sounding" track pretty easily, just because I attribute this type of sound with The 1975. So I disagree with your thoughts on the band not having their own sound. However, if you're not a fan of the band like you've said, then I can see how you wouldn't think they were original
I agree for the most part. For me it starts well and it ends pretty well too - but there's too much meh filling in the middle.. There only needed to be 9 or 10 tracks and this would've been a really solid pop LP! "The Sound", "Somebody Else", "Love Me", "Ugh", "She's American" are the personal highlights.
Alot of his opinions about this album are addressed in The 1975's "The Sound" music video lol
i agree with you on some points, but i do find it to be a great album. some songs, i agree, should've been cut though.
The 1975 - 6/10
ILWYS - 8/10
ABIIOR - 10/10
cagethefoxtrick agreed
not self titled getting a 6, wtf this album was one of their bests and if not, the best.
trying to rationalize things way too much. their name, their music, their lyrics, the album name - all these things scream hipsterness, but in a good way. taking old stuff and reinterpreting it, that is basically what fashion in the last few years has been like. the 1975 have realized this and used this development as a genius way of displaying their pop-making-ability. the 1975 stand for a feeling of pop nostalgia while simultaneously making fun of pop culture and themselves. they are so self aware, how can you say "they probably didn't know what they were doing". OF COURSE THEY WERE.
there is a difference between pretentiousness and pure genius - self awareness.
3:04 the best explanation ever
Anthony sounded more depressed in this review than he did in Miley and Her Dead Petz.
+Michael Ford Because he never wanted to listen to or review this album, but you guys kept fucking going.
+Michael Ford Because he actually had hopes in the beginning. And then, they were shattered.

+Michael Ford This is because... when a record start good and end badly... it's always more depressing than the contrary...
An advice to bands ! To impress Fantano put all the shit tracks on 1st side !
I didn't like their first album but i actually enjoyed this album.
I feel like people just watch his videos and don't actually listen to the albums and then they just talk shit about musicians they haven't even listened too, it's like Fantano has fanboys lmao
Very true dude
What the hell? "This Must Be My Dream" was my favorite song out of this whole album.
Well, it's really a pity you didn't like it at all. But to each one their own!
Also, you should totally watch the music video of "The Sound", even if you didn't like the song, because it's basically a summary of the points of criticism you raised here.

I can definitely agree about the instrumentals but i reallt think the highlights of this album like love me, ugh, change of heart, shes american, paris, etc. really bring it up a notch. There were almost 20 songs on the album
Anthony. Can you tell me what that album with the 3 guys behind the blue wall is?

"Nana" is one of the most emotionally raw songs I have ever heard. Credit to them for putting such a touching song on the album, for the world to hear. The lyrics are so intimate and beautiful.

Is the red polo the precessor of the red flannel? 🤔
Thanks for reviewing this. I dig this album, but like most music out there, I can fully understand why you didn't like it that much. Much love
I was extremely disappointed with this review. I feel like you looked at this album from a perspective that doesn't necessarily appreciate pop music all that much (i could be wrong but thats how it came across). My biggest let down was your disregard for the lyrical content of this album, as i would say that ESPECIALLY in a pop context the lyrics on this album were thoughtful, clever, and extremely vulnerable - which you gave no credit for. I disagree that all the throwbacks to the 80's are "tired clichés" especially in the music thats being put out nowadays, where far too many albums are trying much to hard to differentiate themselves by means of orverincorporation of odd samples and trap-style programmed drums. The way I viewed this album was with the opinion that this is what pop-music needs more of. Pop music needs people who actually play their instruments and write the songs themselves, about brutally honest situations that are real, and not written to sell records. And lastly i would like to take contest with your opinion that the album should be shorter - unlike the singles that are released and meant for radio, when you listen to an entire album, its meant for the fans who appreciate their music and the certain emotions that they know the band is trying to produce for the fans. I would ALWAYS rather have a longer album that doesn't compromise any tracks to put others on. To me a band that is willing to put out a long album regardless of what people think, is a band that cares about their fans enough to give them content that they know the fans will like, even if its not content that would ever be played on the radio or on a mass-scale. To people like me who view this band as their absolute favourite band, and relate to them on a deep emotional level, it means a lot that my favourite band made a nice long album with lots of different genres on it, that i can listen to in completely different moods. If i were to rate this album, as a fan, I would give it an 8.5 or 9.
+Jayden Miller I feel like he listened to this album purely within his comfort zone of not being a fan. To appreciate the album you have to understand the process of creating it and the progression form their very early songs. It bugs me that he gave a higher rating to Justin Bieber's album when that album was written, recorded, produced and mixed by everyone but the name on the title, but a group who write all their lyrics, write all their music and actually play their instruments and produce it themselves (with Mike Crossey) are criticised for doing so? If you go onto Ableton I guarantee you you can find every sound as stock without out any manipulation or change, but The 1975 spend ages finding the right sounds and tones to use for everything from their synths, to their guitars and drums and you'd be struggling to re create them for yourselves. You can't take anything away from the lyrics because they were so important to Matty that he wanted to stress their importance to the record by releasing them before the album was released. As for the progression, you'd have to know the length of time they've been working on this record. They had one of the most interesting advertising campaigns, and if you want to go back further, you can go on youtube and listen to their songs from before their EP's when they were just kids and listen to the (as much as I love them) the mediocre, cliche indie/punk songs like Lost boys, Ghosts and the original version of Robbers, that were oh so typical of those years and the style that was popular then. They have progressed as musicians, songwriters, producers and performes.
It doesn't matter who wrote it, this album was shite.
+Brandon MacIntyre What about it made it "shite", exactly? Legitimate question.
+Chase Marshall his opinion
+Chase Marshall Lyrically it was too simplistic and somewhat cliche. The lead singers vocal's lack range and become very annoying after a while. The album doesn't have any structure (it just feels like a bunch of songs put together). They don't sound like an original band, they sound purely like their influences... each song felt somewhat recycled. The only song I enjoyed was 'Loving Someone.'
However I must admit that their debut album (despite having some faults) is quite unique and Intriguing in comparison.
What are the two albums in the background?
I finally listened to this album and now here's my review. I really love the singles they released before, love me is so fun to sing along to, and ugh and the sound are really entertaining. I appreciate all of the references to the debut album on a change of heart. Paris is cute and Nana is one of the more heartfelt tracks on this album. my least favourite track is she lays down and my faves are love me, if I believe you and loving someone. definitely a 6/10

I'm very much interested in your views on St Lucia's Matter in comparison to this album?
How did iliwys get lower than notes
Although I was (and still am, for the most part!) a significant fan of The 1975, I agree with the review. It fell short because of prior success and slight hype towards this new album, but it still had a few "hidden gems" on it- like Paris and She's American. Idk, those are my thoughts.
I think he shows vulnerability in tracks like the ballad of me and my brain where he sings / shouts desperately or in nana where you can hear that he nearly cried at the end or in she lays down
Will you review Kvelertak's "Nattesferd" album when it comes out? Saw you comment on their new single.
I think to review this properly, you have to listen to The 1975 Deluxe Edition, because there are so many references to the old album
Chris Gallagher An album is an album by itself that shouldn't matter, but hey ho
Not everyone can understand
lack ... of ... decent ... lyrics
did you even listen to the album?
Tell me what you consider decent
Literally all of the album's lyrics are fare above 'decent'. "Loving Someone" is an example for sure and I think a running theme with The 1975 is Matty's flair for lyrics.
+Owen Rees they're the most basic 14 year old 'indie' girl pandering lyrics ever, instrumentally the album is great but can we stop with the "matty is good at deep, meaingful lyrics" meme please?
i'd be surprised to find a 14 year old who knows even a tiny proportion of matty's vocabulary
it is deep. it is good. try to find anything else coming out now in pop that is any better.
+DADVIDS pandering? They don't even know what he's talking about half the time and they certainly don't have that level of vocabulary to comprehend what he's saying. He isn't pandering at all.
I haven't listened to the album yet because it's not streaming on spotify until the 11th. Out of the 4 singles, I really liked love me, UGH!, and somebody else (which is my favorite). The single "the sound" fell very flat for me though, so i feel like im probably gonna get a mixed bag when i finally can listen to the whole album.
Been going through your videos and noticed you have never reviewed Of Monsters and Men, soo I was wondering if you could? Maybe..?
I don't know because Love Me is one of the few tracks I'm not really into, it sounds like it could be the next really annoying over played song on the radio. I loved Somebody Else, If I believe you, Ugh!, The Sound, Shes American and Nana.
Chances are you would've like this album if you knew the background to it. There's a lot behind it. As for a distinct sound....I'd like to know a band that sounds like them because I would love to listen to them
Are you going to review Too High to Riot by Bas?
What's the background records?
I just listened to this album, it honestly one of the better pop albums I heard this year (so far), The 1975 feels like a "Bit" like what Queen was doing for many albums, doing different genre's. It's nostalgic in a way.
+Daniel Dutremble wow, that was totally uncalled for.
Pop music is quite huge in meaning. Pop could be anything that is catchy and The 1975 is catchy. Even though it is an indie rock, funk, experimental, electronic influenced band. It is a pop band as well.
***** Music is supposed to be catchy, but music isn't always catchy! And of course pop musicians take influences of other genres otherwise it would be fucking boring, the point is The 1975 is popular and they are making catchy music. But they distinct themselves by having deep determined lyrics and the way they consume music, which isn't poppy at all. They are an Indie, alternative, experimental, funk, electro-pop, synth etc band! And that is so awesome that people wanna buy their records and that means to me pop (popular music) and that is why they are called a pop band. 5SOS is a popband but a pop-punk rockband as well they don't make pop music but they are called pop because people are buying their records that much.
Pop isn't a genre it is a tag for good selling music.
...it is pop
Brandon Hernandez No shit sherlock...
I really think love me sounds a lot like fame by David Bowie (which funnily enough was 1975)
I think more of Duran Duran (which of course were influenced by Bowie)
I like this album a lot and I think it's because I really like the slower songs as well as the funkier ones ("a change of heart" is actually one of my favorites). I do agree that towards the end they start rehashing things they've already done which can feel pointless. I don't think this album is way too long though. I think it's a little too long.
Subscribed.
Are you gonna do Miike Snows album iii
