  • I regret overlooking this band now. The 1975 have released a new song called “Part of the Band” and to my surprise it has blown me away. I was no expecting that nor was expecting to almost cry! What do you think? Are you a fan of them already? Do you like this song?

Honestly I think The 1975 is one of the best bands of the last decade. They've got some great pop songs, but also loads of more experimental stuff too, and they're fantastic live. A lot of people I know have them written off as a band just for teenage girls but I think they're genuinely fantastic artists.

Dude watching Matty’s life cycle through being a young rockstar with a heroin addiction to one of the most mature and gifted lyricists of our generation if not all time is worth listening to every album of theirs 10 times through. At the end of the Birthday Party he talks about his friends (the band) being the only thing that can keep him clean, and now in Part of the Band (^), the last line and the only one the whole chorus comes in for is a proclamation of how long he has been clean for. Truly tearjerking stuff from my now and always favorite band.

      Yes! I second this.
I really hope he tries them on for size. The INXS comparisons are apt....in many ways. But so is Talking Heads. Or 10 other bands I could list. The point is....Matty IS a genius songwriter and a really interesting human. And his band is one of the best there's ever been. They have LOTS of songs and albums and eras and vibes and moods etc etc. Start somewhere....and explore. Have fun. It might take you 6 months to get to that ONE song I'm convinced will change your life....but don't worry, it's waiting. They're that kind of band.
Watching this....honestly was so fun. Just watching a very intelligent cool human who _gets_ music....realizing there's a band out there that he's totally missed the boat on. GET ON THE BOAT! We got room! :)

Adore this band. My ex-girlfriend got me into them and was just amazed by how great their hooks were and how much starpower their frontman had. I think the Love Me video hooked me. Very tongue-in-cheek but undeniably the guy is a star. Think it’s sexist bullshit people write them off cause teenage girls like them. Who cares? Loads of the greatest bands of all time were beloved by teenage girls, why do people assume the artistic tastes of teenage girls is inherently bad? Fact of the matter is the 1975 takes more creative risks than most other artists existing in the mainstream. I wouldn’t say it always pays off, but that fearlessness is what really makes all the difference.

Lift the lid a little bit and you realise how clever they are. This is also a point of contention they get written off as just a boy band pop act or an arrogant, annoying and pretentious act. "The thing that put me off about this band in the first place is the smugness... but what I'm hearing here is real sincerity and beautiful and withdrawn".
Got it in one. There is an element of smugness to their music, as well as everything about the band, but it exists to wrap around the sincerity. Lyrics about French poets in the first part of the song followed by a riff on beat poetry after the first chorus, numerous references to self gratification, funny voices, and an arrangement that makes the song sound more complicated than it is. All this surrounding a simple song showing sincerity and vulnerability about isolation in the rest of the lyrics.
They're a band that get criticised for making broad pop music by some people and making fake deep inaccessible arty crap by others, and tend to play on everyone's opinions and expectations of them to the point of self parody, while still showing that beauty and sincerity that makes their songs special. If you get a chance listen to their new single 'Happiness' for your channel, as well as the album A Brief Enquiry Into Online Relationships for yourself. I think once the smugness is put into context as more than just self gratification it's a lot easier to appreciate the incredible song writing and artistic merits of the band.

Their songs when you just listen to them passively can sort of be taken the wrong way, like I can imagine some of their upbeat songs have probably been played at weddings and stuff with people not giving a second thought to how dark the lyrical message actually is

The lyrics are so complex and sophisticated, yet brought to a simplistic light with the instrumentation. Matt Healy is very observational with lyrics, and uses extremely clever metaphors and phrases. I'm the only one in my friend group of 3 who likes this song. I think it's a gorgeous tune with string instrumentation, lovely melodies, sounds of folk and acoustic (different to most the 1975 songs) plus clever lyricism.

I've literally never got The 1975 until now, despite having tried so many times. This new song is fantastic though, just incredible songwriting like our man Justin said.
I'm not saying they're as good as the Beatles but that string arrangement and the completely different styles of each section really gives me that A Day In the Life vibe. Wonderful

if you want to know where the name of the band came from, the frontman came across an old Jack Kerouac book once owned by someone suffering psychotic delusions, and he was struck but what the man had written around the poetry. at the back of the book was written the date “June 1, The 1975”.

The 1975 is maturing and this is a perfection.
This song reminds me Simon & Garfunkel, and many 70’s stuff, i know its not for everyone (basically most of their Generic Listeners/ tiktok kids fans, fvck em, really hate them.) but this is a perfect example of maturity like i said
1975 original fans know how they’re experimental and fun to their sounds ❤️

Thank you for reviewing this song. I love this band. Matty Healy is an amazing wordsmith. Lyrics like “There’s so much skin to see; it’s a simple Epicurean philosophy.” (Song:The Sound) They cross genres and experiment, so no one will like every song. But they take risks. Another great line, “If she likes it that we just don’t eat, She’s American. If she says I gotta fix my teeth, she’s so American.” (Song:She’s American)
