I’m not ashamed to be a fan of these guys. I love bands, guitars, great melodies and syncopation lyrics that make you think and I also believe that frontmen should essentially be larger than life egocentric knobheads! And Matty is just about the only contemporary singer ticking those boxes!
I’m an older fan & have been following their train for almost 7 yrs now. Their music genre hops & I love it. Matty is THE best frontman & i can absolutely go to their shows night after night & not be bored at all ❤
Nobody does it like The 1975 - they give this generation our fix of raw, incredible talent being mainstream. A small glimpse of living in the golden age of music and it really gives me hope that originality and true talent can live again in these times! (: #GodBlessThe1975
That’s the thing about the band, their music is supposed to be a commentary on modern pop music by using out dated music genres and twisting them with Mattys lyrics. They were originally writing emo music but everyone was doing that so to stand out they created this bright vibrant sound to contrast their serious look. They basically satirize pop music by making the best pop music 😆
Was in awe of every single detail overt and implied in their video. Such a brilliant creative mind. Became a fan right there and then. Thank you for breaking it down artistically. Could not find anyone else to "discuss" 1975 artistically with.
I love The 1975. Their music is well produced, incorporates lots of styles and is bombastic which I love. I'm a huge fan of 80s music so that influence is great. I also like the fact he acts like a proper rock star, which certainly at the time they started nobody was doing
This video is 100%. Seeing The 1975 this Thursday night in Independence, MO and I couldn't be more excited. Matty Healy is the quintessential post modern frontman for me personally. I love the man. He really is a genius and the music is just from the heavens. Excellent work Mr. Hawkins. Here's to hoping you dive deeper down the 1975 rabbit hole as you will find endless gold!
I'm a 50 year old, ex thrash metal drummer and I absolutely. LOVE the performance art aspect of this. And the songs aren't quite what they seem, after you dig in a bit. Trust me. They're amazing.
@@xmasburrito that's awesome!!! Honestly though I am so addicted to the entire package that the1975 have curated. They're outspoken thrash/death metal fans too. That's why Matty said what he did about Metallica.
@@xmasburrito yea. I lost interest at the black album. It had its standout tracks "Struggle within" "of wolf and man" but other than that, I was done with em.
Looking for Somebody (To Love) is just Phil Collins and Springsteen ala Tunnel of Love era. Just great in general, them live in concert, the sound quality is insane. George's kit sounds like you're behind the kit yourself, the bass sits perfectly in the mix. Everything is just pristine with them.
It’s awesome seeing someone analyze their music, I don’t usually like music like this, but for some reason, some how theyre one of my favorite modern bands
I mainly listen to punk and hardcore, but the 1975 are one of my favourite bands. If you just focus on the music, it’s clear to see how well the songs are crafted, a truly brilliant band
Just saw the 1975 for the second time recently and was blown away! It really was something special. Go see them live. I really dig the new album. I love the band. I love Matty.
Loved this review! I wish you were my Music Teacher in school. So passionate and informed. Thanks Justin! (I'm new to 1975 and have been obsessed with their music, live performances and videos. So creative.)
Because of your reviewing Part of the Band, (which I was blown away by) I checked out some more. Found the videos of the Norwegian show Sklavan: Give Yourself A Try - Matty Healy on getting clean with horse therapy - Love It If We Made It. Boy does that last song kick hard after hearing Matty so open about his addiction. Also just a fantastic performance by all. 100% camp 1975/Matty Healy if it comes down to it. They're amazing.
Went to their live show in Portland. They seriously almost sounded better live. The instrumentation was absolutely amazing sounding, matty’s voice was killer, and you could really tell they put a ton of effort into the performance. Not to mention, the set design of a house with rooms added so much to the visuals.
Seriously, who wants a boring front man, that’s a great frontman as you should know being one.I really just got into them, not many guitar rocking bands out there these days.I’m happy to have discovered them. So look forward to you videos. Love the way you honestly analyze bands etc. Ride On C
it’s more of a darker vibe versus a happy vibe. think juxtaposition between the way it sounds and what it’s about- this song is amazing and so is the whole album. there is reason we call them the best band in the world🥺
YES I was hoping he would catch on to the lyrics of this one like he did with Part of the Band; I feel like the credit he'd give would only increase. What incredibly harrowing song content juxtaposed against this happy synth rock jam
@@ilikecows44 absolutely. if juxtaposition was literally a song this would be it 😅 the first time i heard it i was literally torn between dancing and feeling immense sorrow. 💔
I saw their performance in Vegas a few weeks ago. Absolutely amazing! Certainly becoming seasoned performers that know exactly what they are doing down to the calculated second.
I thought you were literally talking about the music from the year 1975! Here we go. Down another fabulous rabbit hole. Love it! Thanks for clueing me in once again. ❤
Have loved them since I saw you do Part of the Band, I think they are a really important band, especially lyrically. they speak to modern issues / situations in a really beautiful way, in that it doesn't seem out of place...they are singing about the internet cultural divide etc but doesn't sound preachy or non-lyrical
I've been a die-hard fan since their first album, but THIS song is now my favourite of theirs. Beyond the super bop-able synth-rock groove, I find the lyrics to be quite powerful. Matty has drawn attention to American gun culture in the past in She's American ("And I think she's got a gun, divinely decreed and custom made"). But this song comes right out with it and doesn't shy away. From start to finish, it paints a vivid picture of gun violence motivated by "incel" dogma. And I think the juxtaposition of dark lyrics and upbeat hooks makes it all the more jarring and powerful.
With their first album, The 1975 instantly became one of my favorite bands. Nearly a decade later, every subsequent album has solidified them in that status. Their sound has evolved from a bit more "live" instruments to a bit more synth-based, and for me it has taken a sound I thought was fresh and beautifully poppy, and turned the pop factor up to 12. It just feels great to listen to their music. Absolutely love them.
That singer looks amazing, that song sounds amazing this channel is fucking sick! Like the music lesson I can’t wait to go to. So good to be watching something on UA-cam that isn’t trying to make me furious in some way.
That happiness-simulating clapping arrangement was great fun to do along to Saturday Night's Alright For Fighting in a stadium full of Elton John fans when I saw him in Sunderland in the summer!
The 1975 restored my hopes for the future of music. Originality and nostalgia in a beautiful amalgamation. I truly believe they are the best band around.
i've only recently become a fan but I first heard about the 1975 during my senior year of college, when their song "Chocolate" was getting really popular. I liked some of their stuff but I didn't really give their music a proper shot until this month. their albums are really good musically and very fascinating, but I also respect their courage to question everything through their music, to talk about the things that don't get brought up much (and maybe need to be). I appreciate the depth and earnestness of their songs, and how they hide deeper, darker thoughts in upbeat guitar riffs and dance rhythms. But even as musicians alone, they are insanely and undeniable talented.
Great to see them getting the recognition they deserve, incredible band who are able to evolve and somehow get even better. Show this video to anyone who doesn’t understand what is so special about The 1975, Justin sums it up perfectly 👌
I think the 1975 gets a lot of criticism from critics because their music is unashamedly poppy and in other places all over the place in terms of genres. I think critics feel like they're a pop band masquerading as a rock band and doing well, and there's more than an element of snobbery in it. Their albums are often more like mix tapes than albums. Matty himself is controversial in part because he's incredibly dry with his sense of humour and his lyrics often tow the line between beautifully self-aware and poetic, and houlier than thou political statements. I'm someone that has always gravitated to sad music as a way of wallowing in my feelings, sort of basking in my own pity. I realised over time how much music can impact your outlook for good or bad. The first time I listened to Love it if We Made it I went in a whole other direction purely because of the 1975 and started gravitating much more to uppity music. The song is the embodiment of trying to get through some very heavy times (the themes are dreadfully depressing) but the tone of the song itself is so unbelievably catchy and positive you can't help but bop along. I now love bands like the 1975 who wear shimmering happiness as a badge of honour to bring positivity to the masses, even though they might not be feeling that way internally.
another great video 😁 i think the greatest draw of the 1975’s music is that it’s just unapologetically fun, and that the band (esp matty) encourage that fun! very excited to see them next year
@@Esafc-lb2sgit is because it is satirising the whole American System- allowing guns. This song is about school shootings and how there has been so many but the government just plays along with it.
Justin is absolutely right about that clapping pattern. It's got me all revved up just sitting here at my computer. Gonna have to try that next time my baby is fussing and see if it plucks him out of it. Also, by the end I was as excited about this band as I had been dismissive at the start. Sonically, The 1975 are right up there with the best live bands I’ve seen. Their soundscape is just so unique and absolute perfection the three times I’ve seen them - arena and festival gigs.
I’m a new listener of theirs but I honestly haven’t heard a bad song yet. Being funny in a foreign language literally has no bad songs whatsoever and might be one of my favorite albums of all time.
I got to see them at the beginning of their current tour and it really was The 1975 at their very best. An absolutely incredible experience. If you weren't a fan going in the doors, you certainly were going out.
Said it on your other 1975 video and I'll say it again, that band and yours are two of my very favorites and it just makes my day to hear you give them such high praise. So awesome.
“I heard chocolate once and it was shit” was my honest opinion of the band, but I went with my best friend to see them out of sympathy.. when it got to the end of the show and they played ‘the sound’ and in the video they showed the negative comments they received.. one of which; “I heard chocolate once and it was shit”. Never did I ever think a band could be so meta. Matty always talks about the importance of feeling “personally addressed” by art, and how video game Easter eggs deliver the same effect. For me personally, I feel the lyrics were written for me: all their best songs include lines which I can relate to more than anything else, ever.
I bloody love these vids. I would love to sit down one afternoon and share a sandwich and a non-carbonated beverage with Justin and discuss all things guitar. Keep on keeping on Mr H
I met Matty Healey when I was buying my beloved Manson electric tenor guitar in notom guitars in Denmark St. I had no bloody idea who he was. I’d heard of The 1975 but it was only later when me and the shop guy were chatting with him that I decided to ask him whom he played with. He was just asking me about tenor guitars and the strymon big sky I was chucking it thru. Having no awareness I had no idea of the hate element. I can tell you all - I found him to be an utterly nice chap with no trace of that pop star bollocks :)
Used to hate them for the aesthetic and called them pretentious. I just wasn’t allowing myself to like them. Luckily my friend was persistent and I saw them live… the penny dropped and they’ve been my favourite band ever since. Genius and sincere - and genuinely incredible musicians
The poppier songs they do really give me huey lewis and the news flavor. I took my oldest to see 1975 as his first concert. He complained as teen boys are wont to do… but i had a blast :)
One of my absolute fav bands! This new album is 🔥 I never get tired of listening to them. Me, If I believe you, Sex, Love it if we made it, classics. Many more tunes.
when talking about why i like the 1975 so much, i like to think about this quote that matty once said in an interview: "And all these kids at the moment are living out their lives soundtracked to The 1975 and I think it’s because...they just, they get it. They get us." i feel the same way, i feel like they get me when i listen to their lyrics - often i cant really relate to all their lyrics but even so they make me feel something and i appreciate the sincerity and self-awareness that they have in their lyrics. their discography is so diverse that you can find a song for whatever mood and moment. i think that's what pulled me into the 1975 so much
So my normal genre interests are in midwest emo, alternative emo, hardcore etc. I've loved the 1975 since the Sex EP. I always thought they amalgamated so much influence quite clearly, including quite evidently indie and emo. One of my favourite song is a two-step garage remix of Head.Cars.Bending on Sex, how many bands can account for such variety in their discography that actually works? They're complex and simple at the same time. Healy is an odd character, definitely an enigma and it's hard to discern what is the "bit" or "act" and what is genuinely him, but that is of course the point. He's a true frontman.

I’m not ashamed to be a fan of these guys. I love bands, guitars, great melodies and syncopation lyrics that make you think and I also believe that frontmen should essentially be larger than life egocentric knobheads! And Matty is just about the only contemporary singer ticking those boxes!
Absolutely agree
couldn't have said it better
I’m with you on The 1975. I’ve only recently discovered them, I’m so excited by it all
I'm literally going to see them in concert tonight and so I loved watching this hours before I go to see my favorite band! I love them so much
Have fun! Just went and it is a blast!
I love The 1975. These guys have a great time and take us along for the ride.
Crap
Was in awe of every single detail overt and implied in their video. Such a brilliant creative mind. Became a fan right there and then. Thank you for breaking it down artistically. Could not find anyone else to "discuss" 1975 artistically with.
Your enthusiastic hand clapping sure makes me happy Justin! I dig this band, too. Thank you for adding joy to my day! 😁
Thanks Jeanne!
Art rock at scale tucked away in pop songs. Tunes galore & plenty of attitude. Glorious. Tidy assessment, Justin. Keep it up!!
I have a fourth year medical school practical exam tomorrow morning so thanks Justin for helping me chill out a little tonight
Good luck on your exam!
@@LoveBaseballLove thank you so much!
Good luck!🍀
@@heidihall4591 thank you!!
I'm a 50 year old, ex thrash metal drummer and I absolutely. LOVE the performance art aspect of this. And the songs aren't quite what they seem, after you dig in a bit. Trust me. They're amazing.
you just made think of Canadian artist Spookey Ruben - he puts prog thrash and bubblegum PoP on the same album! lol
@@xmasburrito that's awesome!!! Honestly though I am so addicted to the entire package that the1975 have curated. They're outspoken thrash/death metal fans too. That's why Matty said what he did about Metallica.
@@stevenrobbins7402 lol i lost interest in Metallica when they became MAINSTREAM tbh
@@xmasburrito yea. I lost interest at the black album. It had its standout tracks "Struggle within" "of wolf and man" but other than that, I was done with em.
speaking of which, be cool to see an episode on Spookey Ruben or Louis Cole or BILL WURTZ! Creative weirdo music.
I’ve only recently found The 1975 and I haven’t listened to anything else since. A phenomenal band and I glad you feel the same too!
This tune would fit so well in the middle of a playlist with Steve Winwood, Big Country, Thomas Dolby, Dream Academy, Howard Jones, and Peter Gabriel.
You are right about the spontaneous syncopated hand claps!!! Very happy indeed!! Love your talent Justin!!!!
Thank you Justin. I’m old music lover and I absolutely love 1975!!
Was wanting you to do this one SO BAD! Thank you!
Seriously, who wants a boring front man, that’s a great frontman as you should know being one.I really just got into them, not many guitar rocking bands out there these days.I’m happy to have discovered them.
So look forward to you videos.
Love the way you honestly analyze bands etc.
Ride On

it’s more of a darker vibe versus a happy vibe. think juxtaposition between the way it sounds and what it’s about- this song is amazing and so is the whole album. there is reason we call them the best band in the world🥺
YES I was hoping he would catch on to the lyrics of this one like he did with Part of the Band; I feel like the credit he'd give would only increase.
Justin, we love your work. Thanks for your videos, always a pleasure to watch. 💙
Great to see them getting the recognition they deserve, incredible band who are able to evolve and somehow get even better. Show this video to anyone who doesn’t understand what is so special about The 1975, Justin sums it up perfectly 👌
You are home! Glad to see (and hear) the Gibson, again.
I now love bands like the 1975 who wear shimmering happiness as a badge of honour to bring positivity to the masses, even though they might not be feeling that way internally.
another great video 😁 i think the greatest draw of the 1975’s music is that it’s just unapologetically fun, and that the band (esp matty) encourage that fun! very excited to see them next year
the way the lyrics completely contradict the vibe of the music is so genius
Is it genius?
@@Esafc-lb2sgit is because it is satirising the whole American System- allowing guns. This song is about school shootings and how there has been so many but the government just plays along with it.
@@hanjnk Wow, what a genius idea, it must take a real genius to think of that. It's never been done before.
Justin this was lovely. The beret, the badinage, the hand claps/coronation street tangent.
Just lovely stuff you lovely man.
Thxs again Justin for riding again
From AZ
Justin is absolutely right about that clapping pattern. It's got me all revved up just sitting here at my computer. Gonna have to try that next time my baby is fussing and see if it plucks him out of it.
Also, by the end I was as excited about this band as I had been dismissive at the start. Justin's enthusiasm is so contagious.
More The 1975 content!!! 🥰 Thank you, Justin. They're my favorite band & I love hearing your educated thoughts-I could talk about this band all day long. 💗
I'm so glad you said Phil Collins. I was thinking Genesis and Peter Gabriel etc
What Hawkins doesn't realize is that inside of that Gibson J-200, there is an extradimensional pocket that contains tens of thousands of missing plectrums...and socks.
I get hand-clapping happiness just knowing there are Justin Hawkins Rides Again videos for me to watch.
Cornation street theme tune....you sir never fail to surprise me, love it 👏👏👏 (that is my clapping along to the 75's & applauding you)
These boys are legends, their NA tour has been legendary so far.
So glad you had that reaction! I fell in love with the band during the pandemic, and got to see them in Boston. Healy is an amazing lyricist, as well as a great showman and musical artist.
Without a doubt the best cover version of the Coronation Street theme tune I've ever heard. Bravo sir.
Matty reminds me a lot of David Byrne when he performs with his suit, dancing and doing some fun voice changes.
Matty Healy has some pure charisma........The band is spot on!
🙏👋👋👋🤙 finally another individual who finally understands the concept of his musical talent..writer and performer ..well done.. division...love the band..❤❤❤
U cheerup my day/days. Thanks
Thanks for watching!
Hey Justin, thank you for everything you do. You really help make my day a whole lot better. Cheers
I have quite liked listening to You riff on about music, but didnt realize who You (tho so familiar looking) were till just now and it made me real happy. Loved Your music alot, and now enjoy these videos.
Just saw them for the 2nd time in years. Such a good show!!! They are the only band/artist that Id pay to see several times (without having new music) currently. I'm hoping to catch them at 1 or 2 festivals/shows next year! I didn't realize people disliked them so much (?)
Sonically, The 1975 are right up there with the best live bands I’ve seen. Their soundscape is just so unique and absolute perfection the three times I’ve seen them - arena and festival gigs.
I love you Justin! ❤🔥Love the channel, love these videos.
I’m a new listener of theirs but I honestly haven’t heard a bad song yet. Being funny in a foreign language literally has no bad songs whatsoever and might be one of my favorite albums of all time.
"I always wanna die (sometimes)" is my favourite!
As a Talking Heads enthusiast I love The 1975. They're just brilliant, a treat for the ears.
I got to see them at the beginning of their current tour and it really was The 1975 at their very best. An absolutely incredible experience. If you weren't a fan going in the doors, you certainly were going out.
I went in February and the whole performance was insane
Just saw them last night. They played maybe 1 of my top 10 favorite songs they have and it was still one of the best shows I’ve seen
I bloody love these vids. I would love to sit down one afternoon and share a sandwich and a non-carbonated beverage with Justin and discuss all things guitar.
Keep on keeping on Mr H
Had never heard this…I love it!! Thanks Justin!!!!
Brief Enquiries is hands down their best work. Just a nice bit of everything.
Been waiting for this since the album came out. Great vid 👍
1975 are a great band. I’ve seen them at Glastonbury several times, always a good set
Also this is the first time I’ve bothered to listen to them 😂
Used to hate them for the aesthetic and called them pretentious.
Been waiting for this :)
One of my absolute fav bands! This new album is 🔥 I never get tired of listening to them. Me, If I believe you, Sex, Love it if we made it, classics. Many more tunes.
Genuinely think Love It If We Made It is the best song of the last 10 years.
The 1975 is such a great band. Keeping rock alive, IMO.
when talking about why i like the 1975 so much, i like to think about this quote that matty once said in an interview: "And all these kids at the moment are living out their lives soundtracked to The 1975 and I think it’s because...they just, they get it. They get us." i feel the same way, i feel like they get me when i listen to their lyrics - often i cant really relate to all their lyrics but even so they make me feel something and i appreciate the sincerity and self-awareness that they have in their lyrics. their discography is so diverse that you can find a song for whatever mood and moment. i think that's what pulled me into the 1975 so much
Video made my day, you are such an entertaining guy thanks for all that
The 1975 is my fav band im so happy you reacted to them again! i just saw them on tour
Love the 1975. For me a huge part of it is that they are the band that I grew up with, and the honesty in their music.
I am seeing them live in five weeks! I am going to be absolutely ecstatic!
