    This is a common issue on these Kohler lawnmower engines!

      I just picked up a toro with the same engine, it’s over revving. Tomorrow I’m going to try this. But if it’s not it, you have any other ideas why it would rev high?

      I have one doing the exact opposite! Reving to the moon, adjusting the tab doesn’t work and even when I disconnect the spring the Rpms don’t change. I pulled the air filter cover off to make sure nothing was binding up the levers. I’m thinking it’s internal…

    Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! Only took 2 hours to find this video. Just been asking the wrong question in the search bar! The key word was "governor"! I wanted to reduce my revs a little. So important not to over rev if you want to prolong the life of the engine. My 34 year old Snapper with a B&S just died. No spark and can't get parts. Sad day!

    You so Rock! I was fiddling with the connector that is secured with the 10mm nut thinking it was there and it did nothing of course. One Google and there you are showing me how to do it correctly again. I appreciate your videos!

      @@donyboy73 4 years ago I replaced the ring in this mower because it was low compression. This mower runs fine just too high on the rpms even with the spring totally disconnected. I have played with that governor bar both ways with no change. How can I get the rpm down without adding a spring? If I push it back with my fingers it drops the rpm plenty good but when you let go they are too high. The mower looks brand new and I want to give it away to the needy but I have to get the rpms down. Thanks for any tips!

    Thanks alot for the video. My problem centered on that part but my mower was over revving. Kinda hard to push on a spring so I affixed a sturdy wire to each end in the open most position. Just had to bend the wire a bit to bring it to the proper rpm.

    Thank you Donny, this is the same P.O.S. my wife got me several years ago, I hate it. Slow turning, bog down and stop.
    I will try this this..
    Still prefer my Grandfathers 1964 Wards mower, It's a little 3 horse and it out cuts my new 6 horse any day.
    Plus in keeps running when I move a hose, no restart.. I can adjust the R.P.M.s

    I have a Kohler XT675 and once I start mowing I hear a knocking-noise coming from the blade area and it doesn't make the knocking sound when I'm not mowing. Also it makes the knocking sound when I am mulching the grass. Do you know what could be wrong?

    Cool video Don! One question, you said you shouldn't let the engine rev higher than 3200rpm, but I always thought 3600rpm was the correct maximum for these engines (at least for Briggs)?

    • @MrTheHillfolk
      @MrTheHillfolk 10 років тому +1

      Yes, do tell. I thought the same, and I've seen the 3200 number kicked around lately.

    • @Shryp
      @Shryp 10 років тому +3

      Most small engines (most likely that one too) are built to be able to run at 3600 RPM. The problem in the USA is residential lawn mower blades have a safety rating of 3200 RPM so the manufacturers have to run the engines slower.

    • @MrTheHillfolk

    I have same engine main problem when I tried to increase the governor as you did my engine would die and if I reduce the tension on the spring the engine would turn at 1,000 rpm. Weird the governor tension spring does not respond the way it should. Any suggestions.

    Great video Dony! How accurate are the non-contact tachs? I've read some of the reviews on Amazon and quite a few people find them inaccurate? What has your experience been? Thanks and have a great weekend!

    • @MrTheHillfolk
      @MrTheHillfolk 10 років тому +1

      I've found sometimes you have to back up or get closer to the reflective tape..move around until it reads.
      I've got a cheap harbor fright one and it works ok. You will know when it's not reading right and when it's locked on.

    Smashing tip, i might just make a paper strobe disk for mine, with mains lighting it would give me an idea :-)
    I could use frequency counters and more complex methods but its a crude engine and that would be overkill lol.

The (new) spring on mine is loose enough now it could be removed without changing anything, and the mower is still running fast. This is after I recently cleaned the carb out. Thanks to anyone willing to help. -JB
