I’m a green, gradual, practical minimalist as I used to be a hoarder and the impracticality of it hit me when I got sick. So I gradually sorted one box at a time from my bed until it was done. Then I made deliberate choices about my food n self care and got myself out of bed. The green aspect of understanding the amount of resources it takes to make my clothes, or the fossil fuels it takes to make plastics made me not re-hoard. Then I let go of painful relationships etc… when my life hurt less I started to regain my health, it’s a journey

I've always been a less is more person, even when my husband and I lived in our large country home. When we became empty nesters and decided to move into the city into an urban condo we definitely downsized. We got rid of 90% of everything we owned and slowly brought in only what was needed and or loved. We love our new home with its high ceilings, floor to ceiling windows , light wood floors and cool coloured interior.
It's definitely easier if the you live alone or your partner is on the same page as you and want to reduce and minimalize. We couldn't live any way else now, it's just such a comfortable easy way to live, so much less stress!!!

The whole suitcase minimalist started in the advent of social media. I've been a minimalist for over 30 years. It ebbs and flows. When I was single, yes I fit everything, minus furniture, into a duffle bag and backpacks. I married and I had more when my son was a baby and I needed a few things. Family life required a few more things but I also kept it decluttered and simple. He is older now and I moving back into a more curated but comfortable with a lot of frugal. LOL I am an artist, but my medium changes, so do the amount and type of supplies I use. I am an avid book reader but no longer have the shelves upon shelves of books, simply because I am moving a lot with my new job. At one point, I had 7 pets, because I could and it was where I was in my life. I now have just 2 cats. I started at minimal white everything, moved into some color in my 30's and now in my 40's, I am just piecing it together with what I absolutely love, and it's my own aesthetic. I also have had 3 different careers, so my wardrobe and lifestyle has moved with where I am. My biggest take away is do not be afraid to try something new, as long as you learn and grow from it. Be in the now, the rest really is just stuff.

I recently discovered your channel and have been happily binging on your videos. It's refreshing to see a content creator of a similar age and circumstance. I've been been slowly paring down items from earlier years and have had several epiphanies along the way of why I feel I need to keep things. It's very cleansing to have less. I think one of the simplest and so painfully obvious things that helped was getting over my need to keep "extras". Why do I need an extra bottle of shampoo, tube of toothpaste, dish soap, tins of food, etc. when I live a 15 minute walk from an area where I can purchase as I need it? Once I had that simple revelation, that spurred me on in other ways. I make a pie maybe twice a year. Why keep a pie tin when I can borrow one from a friend or family? Once I recognized much of my keeping of things was around misperceived scarcity, saying goodbye was so much easier.
A long way to say, fantastic channel and I look forward to your upcoming content. :)

Tack så mycket Benita for your lovely videos! For me, in addition to the definitions here and on Ashlynne's video, a minimalist is someone who enjoys decluttering and simplifying their life and spaces, who is repeatedly and naturally just drawn to that process, and for whom the letting go of no longer wanted items is (maybe even unusually) easy and pleasurable. Greetings from Finland!

Thank you for your inspiration and energy refill, on a wet, dark and chilly October evening. I think “simplist “ is a good word in many ways. A more simplistic life is what I am aiming for. I don’t mind if it takes some time, I’m kind of enjoying the process, and it also gives me time to do my priorities. And your life can not constantly feel like a project, sometimes you just have to live your life like it is, in this very minute. And then you’ll find some inspiration, like this film, and you make another (or maybe two…😊) adjustment, and then you continue living your everyday life, and so on. It’s a lifestyle you choose, you will never be “finished “, it’s a lifelong process. Someone might be rather daunted by the thought, while I’m quite intrigued by it. It’s good for both brain and body (and sometimes your wallet…) to change your habits. Enjoy your evening!🍁🍂🌻

I would call myself a wannabe minimalist, certainly not a maximalist. I love white walls, but I want color injected with some of my furnishings and decor. Like you, I want to feel calm when I enter my home. I achieve that by having stuff put away. One thing I struggle with is the paper clutter. When I take care of it right away, I then don’t have the burden of having to look at it later. One thing that will help me with this, I know, is to have companies remove me from their mailing lists and to have other notices be sent to me electronically. It’s a work in progress for me; I’m not giving up, though! I want calm, order, and a chance to do other stuff besides get my stuff in order. So I think I have became a gradual minimalist, going practical and probably little bit aesthetic, but my ultimate goal is to downsize as much a possible, because a simple life is better under my point of view and that doesn't mean I count daily how many items I have, it means that I have what I need and like...and everything has a place. YOu're the first minimalist I subscribed too as I love these categories! I am definitely leaning towards gradual, practical, and aesthetic by removing the clutter. I've finished my living room for now and I feel so at peace when I get home until I walk into the other rooms in my apartment..LOL

I think it’s about having a carefully curated space where there are no unnecessary things, just the items you need for a comfortable and practical home. The number of items isn’t important, that they are useful or make your home attractive is the key

    Hi Benita,
you explained in a very simple way what the types of minimalism are. For me, being minimalist means separating myself from all that is not needed. I share everything you say. I always follow you and each video is more and more interesting and beautiful.
You are a perfect minimalist. kisses from Italy

A few weeks ago we had someone come out to spray for spiders and ants and we were asked to pull everything away from the walls two feet for them to spray the baseboards. So my husband piled all our stuff from the garage into the middle and after the spray dried, he went to move it back and I told him to just leave it all there instead. Every day I have been setting my timer on my watch and I go out into the garage and spend one hour going through boxes and things and loading them into the car to drop off at the thrift store. It's been interesting because by leaving it there in the center, it gives me incentive because we can't pull our car back in unless the stuff moves, and as winter approaches, that's important. I also notice that an hour of actual purging, breaking down boxes, etc is enough for one day mentally. After an hour I notice that I start having trouble making decisions about what to keep and what to donate, and that's time to call it quits and go relax awhile. I also am putting every box I have filled with donations directly into the car and have been dropping them off as I go along. I have a few items I keep dithering over and I have told myself if I get rid of it now, I never have to deal with it again. That's usually the thing the spurs me on, like Benita I realize that the more stuff in my space, the more on my to-do list and I want time for other things.

Your thoughtful content has inspired me to reduce the amount of clutter in my home. I am working on it one room at a time, and pause to reflect the idea of "whether or not I really do need this object in my space." It is really working for me, and at the same time, decluttering allows me to appreciate the space without all the visual clutter. Your quiet demeanor and your voice are the perfect accompaniment for the valuable information you bring to your channel. Thank you Benita! I look forward to your videos every week!

I enjoy all your videos so much… but this one is special to me… we think very similar. My apartment has my identity too. It’s minimalist, but I like to mix a little with brazilian kraft and italian design and antiques that my family brought when immigrated from Italy… this made my home a quirk place, but the good thing is that it is cozy and people feel good to be here… love from Brazil! 😘❤️🌹

I agree, it's about intention. You can have 300 books and still be a minimalist in my opinion. So long as you are intentionally keeping all of them, and they add value to your life.

I love your video, the kitties, the cozy vibe, and your explanation. So many labels people want to stick on you if you're not fitting in the white, black and empty space minimalism. I use strong colours, furniture from all over the world, don't have an office but a huge table. Pillows for the kitty cats, love plants, books, lots of electric candles to add to the coziness. Still the big house all my kids fit in. Yet I am a minimalist. Living with maximalist XD

I am gradually getting there, it’s taking a while to undo 20+ years of non-minimalist life though. I am very environmentally conscious so I am using things up, selling things, etc which makes the process slower. It’s cathartic though and it teaching me patience. I am really enjoying fixing things as well. Just had two pairs of Birkenstocks resoled at the end of this summer so the are ready to go for next year.

What a nice and useful video…it allow us to be where we are in the process and also why we’re doing all the changes. And it’s true that if you were a maximalist because of the needs of the family or our parental heritage there is more to do and declutter. My father use to have more tools than the biggest hardware store of the region and he had the squirrel syndrome too.I grab it from him I think and when he died, I was the only child and with my mom the stock he had cause us some headache. I love my father a lot, but because of his life story and behaviors I catch that ´ missing something is a kind of threat’´ When I became a single parent mom with my autism son It was such a big time to go to the groceries with him and i began to bought more food to minimise the trips to the groceries., and so on. I really proud of my process to becoming a practical, aesthetic, mix in frugal and green (stil in process) but I like the way it goes for now and the futur. Benita you are inspiring and I love this video so much and thank’s to let us know the adorable girl and his catégories of minimalist those are more inclusive way to see the concept.
