The lighting issue would drive me nuts! But the apartment is so peaceful and lovely!

@@BenitaLarsson cant you just change the whole switch system...It might always be at the back of your mind even if you dont often use the lights, think it might be worth changing it up if you can so it stops bugging you! That would be the kind of thing that would annoy me so I completely get you! The flat is beautiful and spacious, I like how you've kept so much of the previous furniture and just repurposed it/are using some pieces in different areas etc Thanks for sharing it with us!
I have something similar for my lights. But just like your system Benita, my system is also somewhat unpredictable and only seems to work when it feels like it !!! Hmm
Benita I had a "friend" who came to my new home and for the first 10 minutes all they did was point out all the things they would have done or "how they could never live in such a stark/cold home". I told them I will do them one better and that they will never have to be subjected to such offensive surroundings and that the front door in which they walked through was an exit as well. Let us remember that the button reads "comment" not "critique".

When we first moved into our house the bedroom light was on the same switch as the ceiling fans. If you turned off the lights you turned off the fans. It was summer and hot so we needed the fans to sleep so every night I had to climb on the bed to unscrew the lightbulbs so I could turn off the light. It was a joyous day when we finally got that fixed.

We recently found (were found by) a stray cat who is a dead ringer for your tuxedo. He even has that little side moustache white mark. He is on the couch with me right now, looking fat and happy, apparently adjusting very well to his new indoor life and really enjoying his new human servants. Your apartment is lovely and the neighborhood looks fantastic.

An all white kitchen, with a light grey marble counter top, like in your last apartment will look great! I can see how frustrating it must be to keep wiping those mat cabines. Also about the electricals! Once you have all this settled, you place will be awesome.
I'll try to save the existing counter top because I really like it but there are no guarantees that it won't break when they take the kitchen apart. Fingers crossed!

You've just given me the info I needed to tell my landlord (I'm a renter) why I don't want a smart lighting system. Here in NYC they're becoming the rage but I personally don't want to have excessive technology throughout my apartment because I have no interest in making my living space more complicated than it needs to be. I'm so glad you posted this vlog.

is; "When It Works." Listen, I'm not apposed to technology but there's a limit to which I will acquiesce my personal life to "The Borg."
We have the Phillips Hue system and uses an internet connection with a Wi-Fi router to communicate to the individual lightbulbs with voice or programming. Otherwise turning the switch on and off works as well. It’s been awesome! Especially the color bulbs and dimming options. The one in this apartment sounds like an absolute nightmare.

Your new apartment has a lot of possibilities and I know you will turn it into something you love with your planned changes. The one thing you can never change is location...your new area of town is beautiful, convenient and near your loved ones. That's the most perfect part of your move!

So happy you are near family and friends now. I too have an old apartment with wonky lines. Its quirky, but after you get it all fixed the way you want, you will be set in a beautiful space! These adjustments make the channel real and helpful for people who live in real spaces with their own best /worst list. These discoveries enhance the channel to appeal to more people. So pleased to see your video pop up when I logged on this evening from Canada. Loved seeing all your +‘s and -‘s about your new abode. So happy for you in your new space in your old neighbourhood. It’s good to be in a place that feels so familiar and “ at home”. You know you even look more at ease and relaxed in your new space. I wondered about your nice tall windows and how weather tight they are. I noted your nice warm sweater as you went about filming. Here in Canada, I wear sweaters and a vest indoors alll winter long and often well into spring season. It’s often well into June before our weather is to be trusted without sweaters.

I will double check the weather stripping before next fall! I did quickly switch one strip out already and it made a big difference. Can’t keep the windows open to do it all mid winter though.

I like the feature of a hidden exhaust fan and love the decorative crown moldings and the medallions around the ceiling lights - they add character. White cabinetry in the kitchen will make a big difference with the ambiance and like you I would also take it apart and redo; so true that once you see it you can't be unseen❤ Your new home is looking rather welcoming already!

I'm so glad you mentioned the ill fitting kitchen. It was bugging me too, haha. I really wish we had the large light switches in Australia. Ours are tiny, only one finger fits on the surface. Looking forward to the upcoming changes.

I love it and it is coming along so well. I've loved following the progress as we have just bought an old 1910 wool store apartment so will be on a similar journey. I will also be doing the same as you with the kitchen cabinets as they are also dark and slightly squiffy! I totally agree with older buildings with some history about them are better! I will love to follow the progress 🙂

Thanks Benita, I love and look forward to all your vlogs but this series about your move are particularly interesting to me. Talking about the best and worst is a great idea. I live in Australia and have lived in detached homes and units for more than 60 years. We are now working towards moving to an apartment closer to the centre of our city and our daughter and her family. Unfortunately, many apartments here are small and poorly designed. I really like older style apartments but they generally do not have an elevator and are common in the suburbs we are looking in. Your video gave me a list of things to look out for but your approach to the problem areas also inspired me. I love your creative and practical approach to turning a space into a beautiful, liveable home.

Great video! Thank you of sharing. I agree on the light switches - I just want things to work! Any chance we could see inside the deep kitchen drawers? We just remodeled, and I have some deep ones like that. I know that I'll be stacking dishes and such in some, but I have very few uppers, and I wonder about storage of glasses and cups. Your new apartment is really coming along and seems like you are getting more settled. I would cry if I had that lighting system on apps. Hopefully, you can get that changed. Your idea with the kitchen having the white cupboards is really nice idea. I forgot where you told us long ago where you bought that rabbit light from. It is so interesting and love it in the window. Can’t wait to see you decorate your balcony. You cat seems a bit lonely being now the only one. Do you think you might get another one for company. Love the shop you showed us and the nice cafe. Your kitchen is so large, mine is 4 x 6’ and like a cupboard and I so miss my former place with a kitchen like yours. So nice to see you enjoying your new place and friends nearby. Looking forward to your next one.
I bought the lamp in a local store but if you Google Miffy Light you should find it. Bonus is doing well and I won’t get another cat. That would be another 17 year commitment that I’m not taking on.

Your apartment is coming along! It's a work in progress, as is any new place. You have very few "cons' which is wonderful. Smart devices aren't always smart! Your lighting situation and cabinetry would drive me nuts. I like simple but efficient and it can ruin your whole day when those go wrong. But, lovely apartment and great neighborhood! Charming.

Such character in older buildings and the neighbourhood looks great too. The lighting system though … oh my goodness! The usual thing of the idea being good on paper and then over complicated when applied to real life. The kitchen will look awesome once the changes are done. (Yes, the lighting issue is really annoying - I share your dislike of things that are designed to be totally dependent on the internet. And IMO, that design trend is going to hurt us eventually.) Love so much your new apartment!! The wooden floor, the windows, it's amazing!! I like old houses too, I moved in my new apartment less than one year ago, and only living day by day it is possibile to see the things that are not fixed. For me is the same, still a few things to fix that didn't notizie before buying. Enjoy this beautiful home!

Oh Benita, your apartment is adorable. I’m looking forward to seeing you remodel the kitchen in the future. I too have a cheap, flat pack kitchen. The cupboards are almost black- my fault. Now I have embraced the Swedish style ( lol, here in ultra bright Australia- have to use blinds in summer as the sun is fierce). Well done.

Great information. Am in the process of downsizing to a really cute little house. There will be lots of work to be done. I was looking into a ‘smart’ system to control lighting and heating. Now I shall just use the built in timers which are not dependent on Wi-Fi. The tip about the dark oven was also really helpful. Thank you. Looking forward to seeing how things progress. Hej då 😊

The stove vent hidden in the cabinet is a clever idea, very sleek looking. I like the gold faucet with the dark cabinets but I imagine it will be pretty with the white ones as well. The light situation must be frustrating. Technology is great until it isn’t! Glad to see Bonus in your video, he is such a handsome fellow.

Hi Benita, thank your for your honesty and I thoroughly enjoyed your very constructive and mindful rant! I am with you with the finger prints/marks on your kitchen cabinetry. I had the same issue with mine and it drove me nuts!! (and i drove my husband nuts complaining about them!) I persevered with them for 18 months - thank goodness they have now been replaced. New ideas and materials are not always what they seem to be. Look good in magazines etc but in no way practical. Benita in no time at all you will have the place exactly the way you wish for it to be - and i am so looking forward to see the progress. Best wishes

The ceiling medallions and moldings are so beautiful! I love your place. That smart lighting situation though....I was laughing but also so annoyed on your behalf at the same time! The all white kitchen is going to be a wonderful change too! I'm lucky that my old home came with 1920s hardwood cabinets up top. Unlike the ill-advised newer replacements on the bottom, they fit the house perfectly and are not crooked, lol. I totally relate to what you said about not being able to "unsee" poor workmanship! I send hugs and chin scratches to dear Bonus--I'm so glad he looks happy. Lovely to see how close you two are. *meow*

I had them in my old place before I moved and now here. Phasing them out now that we’ve been here for a while. Will keep one though.
My goodness, people are so odd. Sorry that they bothered you about light in a Swedish apartment. I am glad that you addressed it so that people will think about cutting you (and everyone) slack all of the time. Your new home is lovely and I hope that you can fix the app/light switch situation...that would make me bonkers too.

Most interesting. It always takes some time of living in a new home to work out what needs updating or changing of leaving as it is. To live in your old stomping grounds is wonderful and being so much closer to family and friends is so important and very exciting to be able to get out daily and just wander about in the city.
The cat is going to be so happy to be able to get outside when the weather improves and you have the cattio in place as I am sure it misses its dear friend. I hope you have a wonderful day. 🙂

I love the color of your kitchen - I guess I like dark and gloomy - but there is enough light for me. I love rainy days, maybe that explains why I love that color. ❤ The changes that you will be making to your kitchen area will look beautiful! Wow the lighting issue is crazy. I was going to change my thermostat to a smart one but after seeing what you are going thru I will keep what I have the old way of me changing the temp not the app. Which would be a real problem if the internet was down for a long time a few months ago it was out for over 24 hours. You new place looks great. I have a old house and there is nothing straight either. With the years of settling and years ago we had a cement plant a few miles away and they would blow up areas so that did not help either. Have a great day

Completely with you on the cabinets and lighting Bonita.. I have lighting irritations as well so put standard lamps around which I find much nicer. Hope things get sorted soon so you can relax. Glad you are happy otherwise and enjoying your old neighbourhood.
