Hi Benita! Enjoying things without purchasing them is one of my favourite things to do. I once heard someone say that they consider admiring shop displays of pretty things as akin to viewing things in a gallery. I tried it and it works!
I do this too ! I love beautiful things but no longer feel the need to buy everything I like ( thank goodness as can't afford to😆) I especially love to browse shops such as Anthropologie and department stores. I find this inspires my creativity and often reminds me of something similar I already have at home (which I then appreciate even more)😊💗
@@gillianm9367 yes I agree with you, sometimes you just need to see your things from a different perspective, how someone else has used it to inspire you 👍😁
Another thoughtful and thought-provoking message! I have a lot less' just in case' stuff in every catogory. Funny how I used to find such comfort in all those 'back up' items. Now I prefer the simplicity of just what I need, and the visual of empty space.
What a lovely home. I am inspired by the beauty of it. For books I visit the library to read hardback books I cant afford. For nice smells I drip essential oil on a nice piece of wood I keep by the bed instead of scented candles which in a block of appartments has a fire risk. I bought a yamazaki silicone soap dish from amazon so the soap can dry and started using good quality hand soap instead of lots of plastic bottle with soapy stuff in them. I have an old tea pot which was heading for the dump and now use it as a watering can for the pot plants. Once I started getting rid of the surplus things I owned I started to enjoy the things that remained much more. with respect, mark from london
This is the most beautiful and inspiring minimalism video I’ve seen. I just found your channel today and I love it. I’ve been slowing shifting toward minimalism over the past 10 years. Not buying is my new superpower. Thank you for sharing your lifestyle!
Benita I love your comment “I don’t shop for entertainment but I do window shop for entertainment”. That was such an eye opening comment for me. A trap I have fallen into probably my entire life !!
Very inspiring! I used to buy duplicates of favorite clothes and I, too, have stopped doing that because owning duplicates made the original item less special--except, like you, for daily-use pieces like underwear and socks. 🥰❤️⭐️
I am a midi-maximalist who's becoming simpler and simpler in my habits as I age. I buy SO much less than when I was younger. I enjoy your videos as relaxation and a good influence! --I no longer buy mass-produced disposable items. For instance, I now have had one razor forever, and I just change the cartridges. Same as you with nail files, too, and face cleaning pads. --No bottled water: I do have a few large containers for emergencies but I use tap water with a really good filter. --No more perfume for me either. I did keep a set of about ten beloved ones and I wear those, but got rid of all the rest and no longer buy any. --No more tchotchkes. If I buy something, it must have a use, preferably practical. I have enough pretty things (and have purged many.) --I no longer buy clothes that don't fit, which I used to do because my weight fluctuates a lot (metabolism issues.) Now I just have a box of each size range in the back of my closet, and pull out whatever set fits currently. I will only buy new items within that range--items I can wear now. --I don't buy duplicates anymore either, save, like you, underwear and socks--oh, and white t-shirts because I ruin them easily LOL. --No clothes that are not made of natural fabrics. I don't wear them and just end up giving them away. --I don't buy certain colors of clothing at all. All my wardrobe contains besides black and white is gray, dark or cinnamon brown, periwinkle, indigo or teal blue, deep red, ballet pink, and occasionally lavender or dark green. --I don't buy 99% of cat toys anymore because my cats ignore them. They ONLY like catnip bananas and cardboard boxes. And my shoelaces. --No more books, unless I find something amazing in a thrift store for 50 cents (and then I'll give away when I am done.) Anything else I want to read goes on the Kindle, or Audible for audio books. Or I get them out of the library! --No more records, especially 78s. I love very old music, but 78s are heavy, fragile and difficult to store. I kept a few rare favorites and sold or gave away the rest, and I have one shelf of my favorite LPs that I actually play. I don't buy CDs either, since I finally have a newer car which can play digital music off my phone. --In general, I don't buy new things unless it's the best/only option for something I really need (e.g. a new refrigerator.) --No new jewelry. I have a lot of pieces I made myself and occasionally buy an antique item. Of course jewelry is so small and easy to organize and store, so I don't worry about that too much.
I love my glass nail file. I’ve had it for well over 15 years now. One nice thing is that, unlike other files, you can go both directions (back and forth) without damaging your nails.
Hi, I was just reading through the comments and thought I might leave one as well. I wanted to share that as a writer I enjoy listening to stories, fiction or nonfiction. I come to your channel to listen and view the non fictional story you produce. Thank you for sharing your gift with us. A deep bow of respect to you.
yes, same here. its amazing what absence of homedecord does. i saw Benita's empty walls but just very well painted (the right colors), which some may find boring but it breaths much relaxation and ease. (less is more).
So did I! And as I have 4 kids, born over a wide range of years there is no sende to buy perfume for me anymore...well, besides I still love 4711 today!
I love your videos, sister! I figured out years ago what are my favorite colors to wear: red, purple, royal blue, emerald green, black, and white. My only neutrals are shades of grey, from medium to deep charcoal. Browns, tans, beige, etc., make my skin look sickly. Your home is gorgeous and very warm and inviting. Thanks for sharing!
So many home youtube videos show people using scented laundry detergent, fabric softener and scented beads all together. I think it binds to the fabric and doesn't allow to clean the garmet thoroughly. Also they contain chemicals and are bad for the environment. Another one, is people using paper plates on a daily basis. Love your ideas!
Benita, You are the sunshine to my morning. Perfect way to start my day while sipping some coffee. Signed up for Morning Brew. Thank you for the suggestion. There is a long list of items I no longer buy but drinking water is at the top. Here in America it is a huge, ridiculous source of pollution. Be well and stay awesome.
Thank you for the video Benita. For me the biggest impact was going paperless. I have all my favourite books in my reading apps. My business went fully digital, so no more papers or folders lying around. No more stationary. If feels really good.
Another great video, thank you. I can't remember the last time I bought fabric softener, I use vinegar to soften towels. Since March 2020 (our first lockdown here in NZ) I haven't bought or worn make-up and my skin is looking better than it has for years - I'm 57 - and I don't think I'll ever go back!
I've always been a simplistic person. It really lightens your soul when you let go of what you don't NEED. I can't even remember the last time I've worn any jewelry besides 4 good pieces. I filled 3 shoeboxes full of costume jewelry and donated them. I won't buy anymore. I truly look forward to your videos.
I have a hard time understanding why it is sooo very hard to get rid of things, I am like you, I dont wear jewelry but have three whole boxes of it I have acquired over the years, but I never have thought about getting rid of it because it is "my" jewelry, ha ha.
First thing that came to mind.. Haircuts (service). I have an electric hair clippers I've been using for 10 years and with a scissors that's all I need to cut my hair. Buying something, in this case, actually made my life simpler. I don't buy shampoo, soap is enough to wash my head / shorter hair. I don't buy fast food, everything I eat comes from a weekly grocery store visit and weekly going out to eat for Sushi on Saturday with friends! I've a digital minimalist for 15+ years. Besides a nice PC setup and Nintendo Switch most my entertainment is digital or free, like day hiking with friends, so there is no need to buy gear.
I know it's not minimalist but I like yellow and green way too much to stop wearing it, it cheers me up 🙈. But above all, I love books and my bookcase makes me happy. I declutter regularly but I can't seem to get as little as you. I still have a long way to go to be a real minimalist!
Window shopping, yay! I've been practising it for years now. Also, I love your videos, Benita, because your style, be it minimalist or whatever, is so honest. Honest minimalism at its best.
This inspired me to compile my own list of things I no longer buy (or buy far less of than I used to) 1. magazines (used to buy 5+ per month !) 2. music (remember CDs ? 🤣) 3. jewellery 4. occasion wear/ workwear 5. ornaments/crafts (still love to browse though) 6. random beauty products 7. new perfumes (my signature scent is Liz Earle No.1 botanical fragrance derived from 97% natural ingredients) 8. cushions 9. bedlinen (have 2 quality sets) 10. artwork (always end up donating to charity) I love colours and printed fabrics though so I do prefer a wider variety of clothing options HOWEVER I do stick with navy blue as my classic 'neutral ' as it is kinder on my skin tone than black, is practical and works year round. It also pairs well with my other favourite shades of fuchsia pink, indigo and teal 💕
But there are still people like me who don't use a cellphone/smartphone, so I do need my CD's and my books and magazines, and my desk top computer. But I have realized at this time in my life that I am appreciating function over the simple act of "having" and am now in the process of hauling carloads of items to the thrift shop for donation, I am fine with all of my shelves of books and my plants etc, but I am through with having the boxes and boxes in the closets "just because I have them" it is TRULY a case of "out of sight out of mind"...
@@chrisfry436 Decluttering is so therapeutic! There are no hard and fast rules, it sounds as though you have assessed what is important to YOU and are now able to let go of what no longer serves you. Others will be grateful for your donated items and you will enjoy the space you have cleared, I am certain. What I enjoy most is then rearranging those things I most value, displaying a curated selection that is attractive yet easy to clean and maintain. I still enjoy books but keep only about 15 , if I acquire a new one then 1 has to be donated! I would recommend you try a smartphone though- I find mine invaluable 😊
Thank you, I really enjoyed this video! Just looking and not buying, and only buying what you need, is really the key!!! By putting this into practice, I have the funds to treat myself to fresh flowers once and a while!
Hmmm, things I no longer buy.. Nail polish, home decor, hair styling products, makeup, disposable straws, working on finding reusable alternatives for other disposable things, dryer sheets, coffee out,... I mean I think maybe there are enough things that I could make a video like this too! It won't be as beautifully filmed as yours, however. Your videos are inspiring to me on many levels! ❤️
I am a recent subscriber, and find this channel to be so comforting, homey and cosy... I appreciate your thoughts, especially as a woman of a 'certain age', when you've been through other phases and can speak from experience, it's so valuable, I think...😊 I also want to say that I think your 'boring' wardrobe is actually a such a chic style that I think is 'practically elegant' -- practical, and such that you can still work and move, but if you have to go out, you look put together and confident. The 'legging with top' look we've seen a lot over pandemic has now become a look that I'm grateful we can transition into public places with not only acceptance, but with appreciation. Thanks for the awesome content, Benita...!
I just discovered your channel and I am enjoying it so much! Thank you for the inspiration. Just recently it has sunk in that I don't need to necessarily have multiples of belongings that I use and enjoy -(candleholders, dishes, books, clothing). I can just have one or few and that is enough. This has been very freeing.
Oh my, Benita, you’ve uncovered my secret obsession- scented candles. They can be quite pricey so I rarely burn them because once they are gone, so us the scent! So they sit in my hutch while, like you, I burn cheaper candles. I know longer buy dressy clothes, batteries for a watch I never wear, Starbucks coffee and shoes with heels.
I was nodding in agreement during your video when you spoke of embracing window shopping for “viewing enjoyment”, without the want to purchase. I’ve been moving more and more towards this mindset. It’s actually kind of freeing! Getting rid of things that are of no use to you makes sense, irrelevant of what other people do. If it’s not useful to you, someone else can enjoy it! 💜
Hi Benita, I was never a big consumer, but I have a lot of beautiful and unique things purchased over the years on travels and inherited. So my resolution has been to use all the good things as often as I can, and to enjoy them. Using beautiful things makes me really happy, and I do not replace them once I have used them unless I feel the need. I wear my French perfume every day! I wear hand embroidered Pashminas from India as my everyday winter scarves. I am unable to use special occasion clothing all the time, but everything else I have that is beautiful and expensive and unique, I try to use as much as possible and enjoy.
I no longer buy flowers every week. I look for things in my yard and on my walk. I tend to buy single stems instead of big bunches if I do buy. The elegance of one stem with some foraged greens is beautiful in its simplicity.
Lovely to have another video from you 👍all thought provoking and I'm already doing some of the same. Recently switched to a glass nail file and love it! Wish I'd discovered it years ago. For me, it leaves my nails with a beautiful smooth finish, no ragged bits. Do persevere, it's worth it. Also, I never use scented candles now after discovering that some scents are toxic for pets (we have a Border Collie.) White candles look just as beautiful 😍 thanks for your inspiring videos and it's lovely to see you looking great 👍 xx
Thank you for another inspiring video, Benita! When my son was a baby I thought cloth diapers were the way to go initially (didn't work out that way), but over the years I've kept purchasing them for their multi-use functions. They're especially nice for removing makeup or skincare products, and softer than washcloths. They're also good for dusting fragile items. Window shopping is delightful!
I started to make my own all purpose cleaning solution years ago. I only use warm water, dish soap, vinegar and 10 drops of essential oils. Works like a charm. I only use bleach on the toilet for obvious reasons but take special care with the quantity. You don’t need a huge amount for it to work as intended. Just a quick squirt, rub with the brush everything and let it sit and desinfect. Rinse after 10 minutes.
Benita, such a great idea! I have been declaring so much and only keeping what I really need or like. Still a long way from minimalism but it feels so good to have things that we can actually actually access easily. Thanks again for the motivation!
Dear Ms Benita, I agree with you about ¨ stylish & smart ¨ ; I know that it is not a luxury everyone may live by; but I have no dryer and just love hanging my clothes outside or in a warm room (when the weather does not allow to hang them out)! Oh! I did not know about Face Halo! I will opt for those now, a real fantastic discovery for me!!! I never (or at least 5 years now) buy brand new clothes; I buy second hand of good quality and I am so grateful to feel elegant as well as giving a chance to the environment! Is it what is called ¨slow fashion ¨? I shop...in my own closet or in my...friends' one ;) (like you do!) Bravo! ...Encore!!!....
This video really gave me food for thought. I am a point of purchase shoppers, but from now on I’m going to change that habit into one of just window shopping. Thank you for this. I love your channel.
I love your videos & was excited when I got the notification for this one! I’m in the process of minimizing, but I have a long way to go. Your videos greatly reduce my anxiety, and I know if I could get my own space decluttered, it would have the same effect! Take care 😀❤️
You will enjoy the space you claim back and have peace of mind. Not adding more stuff to our space will save you lots of money and time to maintain all your stuff
I love dryer balls, I have had mine for years and use essential oil sometimes on them, I don’t buy fabric softener but use 2 tablespoons off vinegar with essential oil for the rinse cycle. I just switched to laundry detergent “ sheets” no more liquid bottles in plastic for me.
We're almost 100% on the same page, Benita. :-) However, I've always been a jewelry freak and bought too much during the first year of the pandemic as "retail therapy" (the worst kind of therapy there is, IMO). Now I'm considering selling some pieces, even though I'll lose money. And I'm trying not to buy any more. But in general it does make me happyish. Thanks for the great video.
I love videos like this. I don’t buy ornaments, they are just dust collectors. I use bar soap and not shower gel in plastic bottles,no fabric softener or dryer sheets. We have always bought secondhand furniture, only new mattresses and sofas.
Love from Arkansas💗 I really enjoy your videos. They always motivate me. I also rewatch them while I wait every other week for the new one. Great content!!
Enjoyed the video. It's so difficult to be a minimalist in the States. It's consume buy, buy, buy. It gets into your head, but I try to fight it. It's an uphill battle.
I totally understand that we live under different circumstances. Keep fighting that urge to shop though and enjoy looking at things without feeling you need to have them.
It’s always a good morning when there is a new video from you. I stopped buying scented candles or anything scented because it was irritating my sinuses. I stopped wearing perfume years ago for the same reason. All great tips. Thank you for another great video.
Good morning from New York as I get more seasoned I’m doing the exact same thing you’re due eliminating all of the things I no longer used down to a minimalist setting thank you washing you helped me even more
Hello Benita! 😀 I love window shopping! Your video came at a perfect time - we have just switched over to wool dryer balls (waiting for them, and I'm excited to try)! I am not buying (or stocking up) on anything that I don't need right now, currently going through everything and using what I have and when something runs out, I am planning on trying something new! ❤ I do enjoy books ~ I think what I love the most is turning the page, lol. I love the feel of books and enjoy going to the library. I don't wear jewelry either - I have (3) pieces that were given to me, I have them, but only wear if I go out. I do have a collection of purses that I am working on slimming down - I really don't need all of them, just love purses and bags. To help curb some of my impulse buying, I have unsubscribed from emails that I have with shops and stores that I like - I think this has really helped me because I am a sucker when it comes to an great deal from an email offer. Enjoy your day, and as always I really enjoy your content. ❤💞❤
I have greatly simplified my life over the last few yrs. I am still not close to my end goals. Some of my “bad” habits I have broken, and will hopefully be able to at least lessen my remaining ones. I deal with chronic depression which sometimes slows me down for extended periods of time. But I have learned to simply pick myself up when I feel better and get back to work…..on my physical space as well as my mental/emotional space. I no longer buy multiple magazines or books and have thinned out the number of books I had to a manageable number for me. I’ve mostly broken my habit of tv/online shopping. I no longer have 4 sets of dinnerware or multiple sets of sheets or blankets/throws. Progress has been slower than I’d hoped for. But that’s ok. I’m trying to decide if I honestly want to get to a minimalistic level in my home. I suspect I’ll always want more stuff than a dedicated minimalist. I’ve been flirting with the idea of a capsule wardrobe for quite some time but I don’t honestly think I want to go in that direction. Paring down the sheer amount of clothes I have will be more manageable for me to live with. The changes I’ve made have made my life easier and more peaceful. I still like pretty things but they don’t own me any more. I no longer refer to myself as a Material Girl. 😁😁😁
Thank you for sharing : so with you on the fabric softeners (and other detergents) they are amongst the most allergenic stuff !!And i wish I had a good friend who would be of some similar size to swap clothes with when needed. Haven't given up paper books but I now buy them second-hand and re-sell so they don't have to sit on a shelf and catch dust anymore :) So many things we don't need and can be more conscious about
Good video Benita. I am slowly getting to the same point. I am not forcing myself to get rid of anything, it's happening naturally. I am not longer buying: (-) Paper towels for the kirtchen (+) kitchen fabric towels, (-) cotton for removing make up (+) mini fabric towels.
I did a book purge a while back. I left them on the table in the lobby of my apartment building for anyone to take. I only kept the books that I like to re-read from time to time. I always find something new in there no matter how many times I read them!
You are such an inspiration! I haven’t purchased paper towels or paper napkins in years. Bought cheap, white cotton napkins for cleaning and nicer, gray napkins for meals. No fabric softener or dryer sheets. Instead I use ZUM brand detergent when I want a little scent to my clothes (Patchouli, Sea Salt and Frankincense are incredible!) I have’t bought plastic (baggies) in over a year. We have beeswax wraps and a few silicone bags for on the go stuff. I have whittled my beauty/skincare items down to those that work, and have FINALLY stopped buying things to “try” them. My problem still is that if I like a clothing item, I will just continue to buy it. I love white linen shirts…so..I keep buying white linen shirts! I love GAP “Modern Fit” white/black t-shirts, and now own 12 (and find myself continuously looking at them online!) I keep trying to figure out where this “collectors mentality” comes from. Back before I even knew what minimalism or intentional living was, I owned 40 tulle skirts from Anthropologie, 80 pairs of high heeled mary jane pumps, 30 cashmere sweaters, and 50 eternity scarves! INSANE! I am at least aware of my predilection now, and try to steer myself away. I have a black velour dress from JJill I LOVE. What do I do on an almost daily basis? Scour ebay for the same dress in gray! Send help!🥸😅
Suspect, you would seem to have plenty of money or large debts. Spend your time doing something else - go and look at documentaries about how Foodbanks work and how poor folk live. Then use you time and energy to help them. They often got that way because they spent money as you do, without thinking that constant income could stop one day through accident, illness or some swindling swine. I'm not saying don't enjoy your hard earned cash as well but you did say to send help.......
@@lynnoorman2144 I have neither large sums, nor debt. I collect items from thrift stores, ebay or big sales over long periods of time. It’s the “collectors mentality” I’m referring to. Why, as humans, in the 21st century, do we still want to hunt and gather?
I think your clothes are fantastic. Love the vintage items. I am really enjoying your videos. They are calm and peaceful and beautiful. Hello from Iowa in the US.
I pretty much follow all the same non-purchasing habits. I do have jewelry from years ago but pretty much only wear my $10.00 watch from Target, two silver bracelets made for me by my cousin Rune, a few pairs of earrings and a necklace my husband gave me. Additionally, I don’t buy paper napkins as I use cloth ones. I am now a window shopper myself as I don’t see the need to spend money on decorative items. I enjoy seeing what’s new but enjoy even more using the items I have in new creative and different ways.
I don't buy make-up because I'm allergic to most make-up. So I also do not need any special make-up remover, etc. I try to combine products when I can (like olive oil soap that I can use on my face, body and as shampoo). I do like colorful tops (which I buy at a thrift store - but they are overstocks. I get them deeply discounted but they are new with tags). I own 3 pairs of jeans - so all of my tops go with every botton no matter the color. I don't color my hair or wear nail polish and I cut my own hair (my daughter trims my neck and checks that the back is even) I also do not get mani - pedi's. I've given my jewelry away to my daughters and daughter-in-law. With the exception of a few fragrances (one my daughter gave to me for my birthday) - I no longer buy perfumes/colognes either.
I have stopped buying magazines. I use Borrow Box, an app on my phone linked to the public library to borrow books and magazines digitally. I use an app simply called News to access news appropriate to Australia and my area. I try to borrow knitting needles and crochet hooks from friends if possible and if not I check charity shops before purchasing new. The hardest thing for me is stopping others in my home from buying things.
Slowly, I have been giving away many of my possessions that are still in great shape, but that I do not use. Let someone else enjoy them. Thanks for the tip about the essential oil and dryer balls. I will try that.
I worked in a gift shop that was raising money for a humanitarian organisation I loved looking at the beautiful items without needing to buy them Minimalist lifestyle is very freeing as long as it's not too rigid ♡
A new trend is the "minimalist lifestyle." Living by bare bones. A way to not only cut many expenses but also to save money which will grow wealth. But is this good for you? As I told my own subscribers this week, I contend that instead of having an existence of "minimalism," living in a shack and a sleeping bag, you should adopt the mindset instead. In other words, you don't have to deprive yourself and suffer to have the minimalist mindset which will give you money to invest. The minimalist mindset person will buy only what he needs. He won't go in the winter without a coat but will by the cheapest one that does the job--not the designer label. He won't buy a 50K car when he makes 80K a year. He'll buy the 15K Honda Civic used one and save money on a lesser car payment, insurance and gas. He doesn't go to TGI Friday's every week--he goes once a month and grills at home the other three weeks. He brings his coffee from home and doesn't spend 4 bucks twice a day at Starbucks down the street from his office. See the point? You don't have to live like a monk. The minimalist mindset just cuts down on the unnecessary. If you do this you will find that not only do financial problems disappear but you will grow a ton of assets on the side. Hope this helps someone out there---Charles
same as you since i gave away 80% of all of my belongings i dont buy or own any of those things you mentioned anymore i also dont buy seasonal decoration 🙂🥰 life is much better with less stuff .....love from Athens Greece
it's true the candles fill with dust, I try to follow your advice and I haven't bought clothes or shoes for two years because I don't need them, I love the choice of neutral colors. I don't buy newspapers anymore.Love you Benita ❤️
I don’t buy perfume also. As you said, if you have a shower and wash your hair with nice scents, what for? I will consider stop buying scented candles, because of the reason you gave.
You have inspired me to let go of perfumes. Mine have gotten old and I don’t wear them. I learned they were tested on animals and I don’t want to support that so out they go. Nice you could give yours away before it got old from not using it . I have let many things go by now, learning from your videos. Many thanks.
Hi Benita , your videos are always amazing, but this has been my favourite so far. Window shopping for entertainment- that is brilliant ! I have been missing going to the shops as I am a new minimalist on a no buy year . But I could totally enjoy just looking at things without needing to purchase them (and regretting it later .) What a wonderful idea . I was happy to see that most of the other items you mentioned I have also stopped buying . It is just such a refreshing (and money saving ) way to live . Thanks so much and regards from Melbourne , Australia 🇦🇺
Thanking you very much from Germany! You are quite inspirational and motivational! I no longer purchase: scented candles (I love the simple tealights), plastic kitchen items.. I use only glass, hobby supplies.. I have all I need for cooking and baking, cds/dvds/paid TV or movies, souvenirs, fast fashion. Please share the brand of dryer which you have! I am needing a new one!!! Thank you for all your guidance!
Just discovered your channel Benita - have watched so many of your videos this weekend and am so happy to see a new one today. Great content and so calming. Thank you!
I have gotten so many good ideas from your videos, like the laundry bag to contain microplastics and now the wool laundry balls. Things that both simplify and cut pollution are just what I look for! Thanks so much =)

It does work well!
That is a fantastic way to think of it 😊. My mom and I are also happy to window shop, we like looking at all the options.

I love beautiful things but no longer feel the need to buy everything I like ( thank goodness as can't afford to😆) I especially love to browse shops such as Anthropologie and department stores. Another thoughtful and thought-provoking message! I have a lot less' just in case' stuff in every catogory. Funny how I used to find such comfort in all those 'back up' items. Now I prefer the simplicity of just what I need, and the visual of empty space.

Yes! The visual of empty space is comforting.
I heard the expression 'admire not aquire' and it has become my mantra, especially when I am tempted to buy.
Thats such a great mantra!

For nice smells I drip essential oil on a nice piece of wood I keep by the bed instead of scented candles which in a block of appartments has a fire risk.
I have enough pretty things (and have purged many.)
--I no longer buy clothes that don't fit, which I used to do because my weight fluctuates a lot (metabolism issues.) Now I just have a box of each size range in the back of my closet, and pull out whatever set fits currently.
--In general, I don't buy new things unless it's the best/only option for something I really need (e.g. a new refrigerator.)
--No new jewelry. I have a lot of pieces I made myself and occasionally buy an antique item. Of course jewelry is so small and easy to organize and store, so I don't worry about that too much.
TKS ❤️👍😊
I love my glass nail file. I’ve had it for well over 15 years now. One nice thing is that, unlike other files, you can go both directions (back and forth) without damaging your nails.
Yes I just bought a glass nail file from dollar tree and I love it
Hi, I was just reading through the comments and thought I might leave one as well.
I wanted to share that as a writer I enjoy listening to stories, fiction or nonfiction. I come to your channel to listen and view the non fictional story you produce. Thank you for sharing your gift with us.
A deep bow of respect to you.
Thank you, that's so sweet of you!
Yes I made myself reusable rounds from flannel left over from sewing projects.
@@Connie-ts1dv I tried that first but they just ended up as knots when I washed them. Probably used the wrong fabric scraps for it 😅
@@BenitaLarsson I layered 6 or 7 pieces and zigzagged edges. Mine are about 3 inches across.
I agree with all your no buys, I also don’t buy any home decor, the few pieces I own are enough 👍🏼
Same! Done with home purchases!
Thank you so much!
yes, same here. its amazing what absence of homedecord does. i saw Benita's empty walls but just very well painted (the right colors), which some may find boring but it breaths much relaxation and ease. (less is more).
I enjoyed your video! I stopped anything perfumated when my daughter was a newborn. She’s 10 now, never looked back. My cats thank me as well!
So happy you enjoyed it!😊
So did I!
And as I have 4 kids, born over a wide range of years there is no sende to buy perfume for me anymore...well, besides I still love 4711 today!
I'm not sure what store you are showing us in the beginning but I love it!
It's Iris Hantverk!
I love that you are so practical yet stylish at the same time. Thank you for sharing. Looking forward your next video. 🙂
Thank you so much!😊
I love that you kept the silver heart necklace.
I don’t buy heeled shoes anymore. It’s flats all day, every day for me 🙌
Oh, I'm so with you on the flats! Haven't worn heals since ninth grade 😅
Benita,
You are the sunshine to my morning. Perfect way to start my day while sipping some coffee. Signed up for Morning Brew. Thank you for the suggestion. There is a long list of items I no longer buy but drinking water is at the top. Here in America it is a huge, ridiculous source of pollution.
Be well and stay awesome.
Love that! We are super lucky to have great tap water over here.
Such a good call to donate it! Someone else will be happy!
So happy you enjoy them!
This inspired me to compile my own list of things I no longer buy (or buy far less of than I used to)
1. magazines (used to buy 5+ per month !)
2. music (remember CDs ? 🤣)
3. jewellery
4. occasion wear/ workwear
5. ornaments/crafts (still love to browse though)
6. random beauty products
7. new perfumes (my signature scent is Liz Earle No.1 botanical fragrance derived from 97% natural ingredients)
8. cushions
9. bedlinen (have 2 quality sets)
10. artwork (always end up donating to charity)
I love colours and printed fabrics though so I do prefer a wider variety of clothing options HOWEVER I do stick with navy blue as my classic 'neutral ' as it is kinder on my skin tone than black, is practical and works year round.
Isn’t it great to be able to treat yourself occasionally instead of constantly buying stuff?
Hmmm, things I no longer buy.. Nail polish, home decor, hair styling products, makeup, disposable straws, working on finding reusable alternatives for other disposable things, dryer sheets, coffee out,... I mean I think maybe there are enough things that I could make a video like this too! It won't be as beautifully filmed as yours, however. Your videos are inspiring to me on many levels! ❤️
Aww, thank you so much!
Watching your videos after a very long and exhausting day is just what I need to relax and calm my body. Thank you.😍
Thank you so much for watching!
I feel the same way shopping. It can be overwhelming. Sometimes just nice to window shop and get ideas and use what I have!
So nice to just window shop!
Thank you so much for watching!😊
While I am not a minimalist I do enjoy organizing and keeping spaces tidy and cozy. I enjoy your channel regardless 🌸🙂
I love tidy and cozy!🙌🏻
I just discovered your channel and I am enjoying it so much! Thank you for the inspiration. Just recently it has sunk in that I don't need to necessarily have multiples of belongings that I use and enjoy -(candleholders, dishes, books, clothing). I can just have one or few and that is enough. This has been very freeing.
Have one or few and that is enough 🙌🏻
Oh my, Benita, you’ve uncovered my secret obsession- scented candles. They can be quite pricey so I rarely burn them because once they are gone, so us the scent! So they sit in my hutch while, like you, I burn cheaper candles.
I know longer buy dressy clothes, batteries for a watch I never wear, Starbucks coffee and shoes with heels.
Haha, you should burn them if you enjoy them though!😉
Hello Benita, a tip for 'sharpening' your glass nail files... run them under cold water 😊
My wardrope is brown-grey-light pink and dark green. They go so well together and adds color.
Yes, exactly! Thank you!
Yes, always use your best! Don't ever "save it" 🙌🏻
Love my Very Irrestible by Givency!!! Long live perfume!
Checking out books from the library is a great way to read and not own additional books. I almost always find even recent titles at the library.
I no longer buy flowers every week. I look for things in my yard and on my walk. I tend to buy single stems instead of big bunches if I do buy. The elegance of one stem with some foraged greens is beautiful in its simplicity.
Hi Benitta. Your tip of window shopping for fun, without buying anything has worked so well for me. Thanks a lot. Love and hugs xxx
Dear Benita. Please make a video of your favorite home decor\appliances\furniture\plants\organizers etc stores you like the most! Thank you
Lovely to have another video from you 👍all thought provoking and I'm already doing some of the same.
My glass file files really well but with short nails and a thicker file it's been a bit of an adjustment on angling it 😅
Thank you for another inspiring video, Benita!
Love that you found a great use for them!
I make my own cleaners too and I dont buy processed food anymore.
Loving your videos 💜
Those are both great calls!
Thanks for sharing, that's great!
Benita, such a great idea! I have been declaring so much and only keeping what I really need or like. Still a long way from minimalism but it feels so good to have things that we can actually actually access easily. Thanks again for the motivation!
Dear Ms Benita, I agree with you about ¨ stylish & smart ¨ ;
I know that it is not a luxury everyone may live by; but I have no dryer and just love hanging my clothes outside or in a warm room (when the weather does not allow to hang them out)!
Face Halo are great and feel so soft against the skin!
Un énorme merci pour la traduction française... Un énorme merci pour ce partage ... J adore vos vidéos et votre mode de Vie... Mille merci
Yes, decluttering is a great way to reduce anxiety!
Yes!!!!! I yearn for a space such as Benita's space!
@@cabayern9416 Me too! I need to figure out what’s standing in my way. 😆
You will enjoy the space you claim back and have peace of mind. Not adding more stuff to our space will save you lots of money and time to maintain all your stuff
Agree with window shopping. I can spend 2 hours in Sephora but buy just one item. I just love being surrounded by those products hehehe.
That’s so great, right?
We each enjoy different things and if you love all your jewelry, that’s fine!
I love videos like this.
I don’t buy ornaments, they are just dust collectors.
I use bar soap and not shower gel in plastic bottles,no fabric softener or dryer sheets.
We have always bought secondhand furniture, only new mattresses and sofas.
I’m totally with you on the decor items!
Love from Arkansas💗 I really enjoy your videos. They always motivate me. I also rewatch them while I wait every other week for the new one. Great content!!
Thanks so much for watching and rewatching!
I agree that window shopping is the best! I no longer waste money on things I'll eventually grow tired of and need to give away.
This video is so calming and your cat is so cute
An inspiring video! I am learning to control my impulsive shopping habits and minimize my stocked stuff. Thanks a lot.
Enjoyed the video. It's so difficult to be a minimalist in the States. It's consume buy, buy, buy. It gets into your head, but I try to fight it. It's an uphill battle.
Do you know Becoming minimalist channel ? Joshua lives in the u.s. and his videos are really insightful and helpful.
Benita has great minimalist videos that’s how I discovered her. she inspired me and I gave myself one year to fully declutter.
I totally understand that we live under different circumstances. Keep fighting that urge to shop though and enjoy looking at things without feeling you need to have them.
Aww, I'm so happy to hear that!
Omg yes, a daily uphill battle. It’s so stressful.
It’s always a good morning when there is a new video from you. I stopped buying scented candles or anything scented because it was irritating my sinuses. I stopped wearing perfume years ago for the same reason. All great tips. Thank you for another great video.
I'm wondering if I have an issue with my sinuses too since strong scents are increasingly bothering me 🤔
Good morning from New York as I get more seasoned I’m doing the exact same thing you’re due eliminating all of the things I no longer used down to a minimalist setting thank you washing you helped me even more
Hello Benita! ❤💞❤
Unsubscribing is a great call! That way you won’t get tempted by things you don’t need🤓
Watching your videos is always soothing for me. Thank you.
Thank you for sharing : so with you on the fabric softeners (and other detergents) they are amongst the most allergenic stuff !!And i wish I had a good friend who would be of some similar size to swap clothes with when needed. Haven't given up paper books but I now buy them second-hand and re-sell so they don't have to sit on a shelf and catch dust anymore :) So many things we don't need and can be more conscious about
Once more loved watching the video. I just love the way you present it. ❤ to both you and ur 🐈.
Thank you so much!
Your cat is so adorable, what a sweetheart!
She's a little sweetie!😊
I don't buy scented candles. I only buy an ordinary candles which is more cheaper and will only use it incase on emergency or power outrage.
Thank you so much for sharing!
Every other Tuesday, I watch this channel and my mind feels like it's getting a vitamin and spa treatment.
Aww, that's so sweet, thank you!
Neutrals, yes, especially paired with the brighter blue denim you wear here. Blues compliment your eyes, hair and skin tone.🎨
Oh, thank you!
I think your clothes are fantastic. Love the vintage items. I am really enjoying your videos. They are calm and peaceful and beautiful. Hello from Iowa in the US.
Thank you so much! My mom's jackets are pretty great!
Agreed the vintage jackets from her Mom are gorgeous
I pretty much follow all the same non-purchasing habits. I do have jewelry from years ago but pretty much only wear my $10.00 watch from Target, two silver bracelets made for me by my cousin Rune, a few pairs of earrings and a necklace my husband gave me. Additionally, I don’t buy paper napkins as I use cloth ones. I am now a window shopper myself as I don’t see the need to spend money on decorative items. I enjoy seeing what’s new but enjoy even more using the items I have in new creative and different ways.
I love this "enjoy seeing what’s new but enjoy even more using the items I have in new creative and different ways" 🙌🏻
I use the cotton reusable rounds instead of cotton pads, I have glass files for my nails and also sold most of my jewelry.
Let someone else enjoy them 🙌🏻
Dear Benita 🌻 🌞
Your videos motivate me to sort out, tidy up and clean. 👍👍👍
Thank you very much for your help. 🙏🌹🌹🌹
I'm so glad they are helpful!
Helpful video, Bonita. Hope your health continues to be strong. Happy day from California!
Glad you found it helpful!😊
I worked in a gift shop that was raising money for a humanitarian organisation
I loved looking at the beautiful items without needing to buy them
Minimalist lifestyle is very freeing as long as it's not too rigid ♡
Hi Benita, your organisational skills and calmness are impressive. Love your lifestyle. Thank you.
It's years already that I'm not buying any magazines or books. There are all in library and it saved me a lot of money 🙂
I love the library so much!
same as you since i gave away 80% of all of my belongings i dont buy or own any of those things you mentioned anymore i also dont buy seasonal decoration 🙂🥰 life is much better with less stuff .....love from Athens Greece
Thanks for the rec on Morning Brew. I’ve enjoyed it for weeks .
I love it too!
it's true the candles fill with dust, I try to follow your advice and I haven't bought clothes or shoes for two years because I don't need them, I love the choice of neutral colors. I don't buy newspapers anymore.Love you Benita ❤️
Aww, thank you so much!
Your videos always inspire me. Thank you for sharing a little sneak peek into your life.
Thank you so much for watching!
Very inspiring! I think I may start culling stuff from my life. Extraneous stuff.
I’m so happy if you feel inspired to window shop! It’s fun!
Love your list! My dryer was in my apartment when I moved in. It’s a Bosch, so a good brand but it’s old and started to leak a bit unfortunately.
@@BenitaLarsson oh yes Bosch is fantastic. Thank you for the information! Hope yours is fixed soon.
Yay! I've never bought any of these things and am also looking into prescription sunglasses. Snap! 😊
Just discovered your channel Benita - have watched so many of your videos this weekend and am so happy to see a new one today. Great content and so calming. Thank you!
Thank you so much for watching!
Love reading morning brew with my morning brew…
I have gotten so many good ideas from your videos, like the laundry bag to contain microplastics and now the wool laundry balls. Things that both simplify and cut pollution are just what I look for! Thanks so much =)
