Thanks for the compliments! I usually go out and look a my rocks until I see one that is shaped like something and that is what I will carve that day. I like to carve out of memory because every carving comes straight from your own imagination and is uniquely you. The Man Of Stone
Nice work! My grandfather (who also works with stone) got me started on soapstone several years ago and I enjoy it a great deal. I've never done animals, but I'm going to try it. Thanks for the inspiration!
Carving soapstone is actually really fun. Soapstone is a very soft stone so you can make a small carving in a night. Try it out, you will like it. Thanks
soapstone is mainly talc mixed with other minerals but it is mostly talc. The ancient stone masons used a lot of the same tools we use nowadays. Before metal people made blades from flint and obsidian type rocks that break off way sharper than you can sharpen metal. They would carve softer rocks like limestone with tools they made from harder rocks like granite. As soon as metal became available they basically invented all the tools we have now like files, chisels, adz, axes and hand saws.
that is a gifted tallent nice to see this guy put all that work and time recording this thats dope.and he makes it look easy but thats years off experiance anyway nice work like always peace
Very informative and helpful. Watching you work in 3d helps me imagine how to do it. Didn't realize you could use woodworking tools. The have old ones in the market here :-)
Hello, I am using flexcut tools for my chisels now and they are awesome chisels however they are a high end brand so they are a bit more expensive. I f you are serious about getting into carving I would save up and buy good tools because if you start out with cheaper tools you will want to upgrade right away. the thing about cheap tools is they will do the job but they have to be sharpened so frequently. Files are the same thing. the cheap ones lose their edge very quick and the tool.
Hi Dave, really cool. Your videos actually has inspired me to give this a shot. However, all I can find is Brazilian soapstone. Do you know how I could get the Manitoba stone in the US?
Hello, thanks for the compliments! I sell Manitoba soapstone by the pound. If you wanted to order some I could ship it to the USA. You can contact me at davezachary@yahoo.ca Thanks
What kind of minerals are in soapstone? Also if you can list me all the tools that the ancient stone masons used back in the day and what was their highest grit they might have used?
So Soup Stone is harder than a soft wood to carve such as Basswood? Looks like you do a lot of grinding and rasps rather than whittling with a knife? Also the dust is not good for your lungs? Would love to have a go though!Question: I really like to use hand tools and just started whittling wood. I would love to try Soap Stone also as I love the soft look. Do you need to be strong to do this? I am not that strong in the hands or arm strength.
BlueBird what do you use to polish it up real good I've just started messing round with soapstone coz there's an outcrop of it near where I live but I don't know how to give it that perfect polish
I use very fine sandpaper, the finest that I can get. Also, have to do it very lightly. It takes a while, but it has a nice effect. Afterwards, I put oil on it. I use 3 in 1 household oil. You could probably use other oil. The oil helps bring out the natural color of the rock. I used some soapstone that was an orange-ish color that had black stripes in it. I forget where it came from, but I got it at an art store. Most of the soapstone I have used is green in color. There are different kinds of soapstone depending where it comes from. I haven't carved in a long time, but I've made pipes.
BlueBird thanks for the handy tips I've got some fine grit wet and dry sandpaper I will give it a go with that it does a good jobe polishing steel so it shoud work nicely on the stone. yeah I feel lucky the outcrop is there it's amazing how meany different collars of soapstone you can find in one place I always thought each different collar you can get came from different places round the world but apparently not.
You're welcome, Don. I should get back into carving soon. If I can find my tools. You could probably make some money selling soapstone online. Just an idea.
Would you know of any sources for materials and tools in British Columbia. I know someone that used to carve. He is going through a bad depression now as he is no longer living in a house and can't putter in garage. He is in an apartment and has nothing to do. I was thinking that if he got involved in carving again it could really help.
If you are on a budget I would try to buy good brand tools 1 at a time. Just get the ones you will be needing and upgrade as you go. Liogier makes awesome riffler files made by hand for stone carving. These are high end tools that will last a very long time. He sells them 1 by 1. these rifflers have 2 different shaped sides so one would probably be good enough to start with. You can also buy flexcut one by one. Watch at garage sales for old antique woodworking tools they r cheap n well made.
Yes, sometimes there is no other way but to scrape it all out of certain spots. you can sometimes drill out spots you want removed to make less work scraping. I hope I answered the question. let me know if you have any more questions. thanks
hi Dave i rely like your video it is instructive your soapstone look like my i found in Quebec You made nice polar bear good job. you can also see my carvings on Google artinuitpita.pmg Thanks Pita

You do such gorgeous work. Your Moonman is my favourite. Do yo think about anything specific when you're carving?
Hi Dave,

I found it fascinating!
I carve stone too. I would love to try some soapstone I mostly use alabaster and calcite onyx... maybe a trade would be fun.

That is so beautiful. Thankyou for sharing.
what would you do if a piece that you wanted/needed were to break off? would that mean scrapping the entire thing?
beautiful.what is it like working with stone ?
#it is so satisfying !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!OMG

It cuts and carves SO easily! End result looks perfect! Easy 200$ made right there! It makes me want to have a go at it!..
My favorite part is polishing it when it is finished. You can get it as smooth as glass if you have the patience for it! :)
