  • Golf Mk3 - engine breathing heavily - engine breather smoke (fumes) creating a dirty air filter, which reduces efficient fuel combustion, creating more engine problems.
The engine breather problems are due to a worn engine.
This core problem requires a solution.
However, in the meantime, the air filter will be rapidly blocked, choking the engine.
Here is an air filter box modification, to direct the fumes into the engine, to keep the air filter clean.
If it is an old car, you might live with a heavily breathing engine, but you can't live with a dirty air filter.
This modification is applicable to many vehicles.

How about just taking the breather off fit a little filter on to top of it and plug the hole with a grommet

Yes, and this may be the day to day solution that we use, until the top end can be fixed.
      .
The objective though, was to generally solve the bad positioning of the breather entry.

Engine Tuning, how do you know that the car is breathing heavily? I have a 96 mk3 golf myself. I apologise if this question is a very basic one but i am someone with very limited mechanical knowledge.

Hi Adam, sorry for the delay; your comment was not notified to me.
      Remove the oil filler cap.
      Are fumes coming out?

@@EngineTuning Do I need to do this when the engine is running, I assume yes. Sorry if it's a basic question, I'm new to working on my own

Yes; when the engine is running.
When the fuel ignites, it creates smoke.
Normally this smoke exits through the exhaust valve.
However, when the engine is worn, the smoke, and some of the explosion pressure, passes the piston rings.
This smoke and pressure, enters the engine enclosure, and is fed, by a tube, into the air intake filter.
The idea is that these fumes will re-enter the combustion chamber.
This is fine when the engine is new.
However, when it is worn, the fumes can quickly spoil the air-filter.
