I work for an AI consultancy - Gemini and other LLMs aren’t integrated into assistants because running them is hugely expensive (which is why running smaller models locally is preferred, like Gemma) and because product-ready LLMs with all the appropriate guardrails (preventing it from saying or doing stuff you don’t want it to do) is super challenging while still retaining the power and flexibility behind the LLM promise.
This I think is the challenge for Apple. LLM like Gemini are making users think Siri is even worse than they already are. But having an assistant like Siri, and a LLM like Gemini or GPT as a separate entity is clunky and feels repetitive. How to merge the two and still be efficient is the trick I think Apple is working on, well maybe I do not think it, just hope that it is true... LOL.
Pure speculation here, but I think Apple was hesitant to start and recognized that the cost of training first gen LLMs would be a poor return of investment. Leveraging a contract with google to access a more mature system is a significantly cheaper choice and grants them a path to work on the next generation of LLMs. Ones that will make use of low-level architectural changes designed for new generations of neural-net-optimized chips.
@@christophermartinez8597 you might be right, the AWS philosophy is that models will be interchangeable and the platform is more important. Could just be that apple see models are inherently interchangeable and they’d rather focus on the ecosystem and platform that allows them to upgrade whichever model they decide to go with in future

Hopefully Siri will be opened up to use home devices from Google, Samsung, and Amazon. One of the best uses of voice control is home automation, but Apple keeps it locked down to HomeKit items which are unnecessarily expensive.
You can still do it with the shortcuts app
the move would be for google to have gemini merge with google assistant locally on device. Make it so the regular stuff like "turn off lights" works fast, but can still do the gemini stuff when need be.

Transformers were developed by google, they were using it on google translate for long. They also had some internal version of bard for years by then (you guys forgot this one worker that believed it was sentient).

Benchmarks of the 24 ultra show that the GPU is as fast as the iPhone 12 minis GPU.
So Apple could use an onboards AI that’s trained on a bunch of data. The GPUs should be able to handle it really well on the much larger modern iPhone GPUs.

Apple usually acquires companies that provide resources. But this time, they aren't acquiring it. they are having a contract with Google.
Acquisition means to buy another company for its resources

The thing i cant understand is, when does "AI" actually become AI. Because most responces and decisions ect that it makes is processed from a library of initial things its like it puts 2+2 and then 16+16 together to come up with a certain answer. Its just working with what it has initially to come up with the answer or action. Its not neccessarily "thinking" . Its just making up a answer from a bunch of answers it already had. Kinda thing
AI no longer means "artificial intelligence" - it means huge database and canned answers.
I could see a world where Apple uses on device or in account but across all devices for that account AI for command oriented use, such as "turn on my lights" or "call my mother", while at the same time using Google for search related AI such as "find me a hotel in Paris that is within a price range and serves a vegan breakfast" or "write me code that does x y and z". If they can merge that under one Siri interface giving apple hardware users a "pro" AI experience without having to buy a "pro" plan like Copilot Pro etc., I think that would help Apple a lot. Users won't care if it is Gemini or the on device intelligence, they will just care that it works. The Privacy issue will be tricky. I wonder if the interface will have some way of telling the user when a request is going off device and when it is staying on device so that you can know if it is privacy leaking or not. Maybe they could build an on device anonymizer to obfuscate things like names, sin, phone, address, etc.

Use Siri for weather, music, alarms, replying to messages while I’m riding. I rarely have issues with Siri. I don’t get the hate.
Agreed, Siri is the only bot that can be truly used as an assistant thanks to the OS integration. Copilot can’t even set timers lol

@@websurfer945 Therein lies the problem, when the best that common people had were just Siri, Alexa, etc. we had nothing to compare it to. Ever since ChatGPT-3 was released, we have a point of reference that's only getting more powerful every 6 months. Siri appears to become more obsolete overtime.

This wouldn't be the first time that Apple has used Google, so it's not out of the realm of possibility that Apple outsources it. Apple outsourced Maps when it first came out to Google. If they plan to use Google in the short term and transition away, let's all hope they do it in a better way than they did with Maps.

Seems highly unlikely that Apple would pay Google. Google needs Gemini distribution in the same way it needed search distro. AI products are going to eat into search revenue so this is likely just an evolution of the existing deal.
Do you think Apple have a H100 from NVIDIA or are they still stubborn regarding NVIDIA. If they are will it mean that they fall behind on AI?

The Siri team at apple split into two competing factions and ultimately devolved into chaos. What’s left isn’t much from what I’ve gathered from folks still there, but a lot of the resources they had focusing on the electric vehicle were repurposed for “AI” initiatives. Apple has also become super undesirable for software engineer’s for a while now. This is clear in their products lol

Well, Apple purchased a generative AI company, so I think they’re trying to use Gemini to help with the online portion of Siri. But I believe that they’ll use their own for on-device work.

I think Apple is still developing their own AI, Ferret works great already. I expect the talk is for:
- A alternative solution in case development on ferret is not on time
- Talks on marketing(Even though they have a better product with the Apple Watch, they still talk with traditional watchmaker). They are not familiar with ai thing

Google has a huge cost if they have to buy all the GPUs and laying out the infra. Of course apple is paying Google. They will probably get a discount, but there is just no point in Google paying apple to run a loss.

Google's problem is bad leadership which has led to lacklustre products in recent years.
I've been itching for a foldable, and Siri is the single worst part of the iPhone experience. I might switch to Android if things don't improve soon!

Waiting to see what apple actually does in ai but I expect apple ai on device siri then internet necessary queries will use google ai not much different than internet search is now on iphone using google, just want siri to majorly improve on all apple devices‼️

Google is terrible. If it were not for UA-cam I would be free of it. I use Apple because they are far more security conscious than Google. I don’t trust either, but Google has repeatedly been caught scraping every bit of data about its users even after they said they weren’t doing it. If Apple decides to incorporate Google AI into its products without a way to completely disable/delete those elements I fear my time with Apple will be over.
Knowing Apple, they would never let Google get hands on user’s data, so they might use an on-device LLM as well to protect user’s privacy while outsourcing the generative ai to Gemini
