The history and development of Pokemon games is fascinating, especially when it comes to the designs of Pokemon themselves. Many designs have been changed over time from what they originally were, with some even being changed after their official release. In this video, I will be documenting 78 Pokemon who have had their designs changed over time, and compare what they looked like originally, to what they look like today!

3min into your video and you finally start talking about the Pokemon that have changed... Come on dude.
Eko 2 you can skip... why do people feel the need to complain about literally everything
@@eko2_ they support him so he can keep making videos
HoopsandHipHop awesome video man! Absolutely enjoyed every single minute of it. That gold and silver Demo tho 🤤
@@eko2_ it's called skipping.
Mr. Mime with 4 fingers feels right somehow.
agreed.
Ur not alone
Yeah I love mr. Mine
*Mr. Mine*
*mr. mine*
I prefer the old girafarig design over the current one. I like how it matches the palindrome name.
Same, I like the darker, evil head. Makes me think of yin and yang
axoNNNessj It would be cool if it still looked like that and has the same ability as morpeko or something similar
It looks like a Pushmi-Pullyu from Doctor Doolittle. I like it a lot better too.
It also had a beta-pre-evolution which looks like two flying blobs similar to Haunter. The reason being that these are two spirits - one good and one evil -who then fused into Girafarig. Fans have also drawn two fictional evolutions of Girafarig being that one side takes over and the other one becomes a tail.
Yea
8:30 it's a misconception that Kakuna doesn't have arms! They're just tucked in tight to its sides! "Kakuna has a dome-shaped head and black, triangular eyes. It has two scythe-like arms in the middle of its body" :)
POKEDEXED dotCOM agreed
Madness Arcade i am pretty sure your right
I don't know for sure, but the Blastoise could also just have it's cannons retracted and tucked in.
Eh... the _only_ other time those "arms" have ever been shown is in a Bandai card from the same period. Never in the anime, never in the TCG, and never in the games, even after fully animated sprites and 3D animations came to be. More likely, they just made a conscious choice to change it after it was pointed out that it doesn't make sense for Kakuna to have usable arms when its whole thing is that it doesn't move.
The original legendary dogs look like what could have died when the tower burned down
Maybe they are, I had the same thought.
GF could easily give us what Pokemon the legendary beast were before the fire by having a NPC trainer (if the Pokemon belonged to someone) saying my ancestors Pokemon perished in the tower fire and my team honors them by being the same Pokemon or if they didn't belong to anyone and where wild people obliviously someone know of the Pokemon or someone did. so again just have a trainer say his team honors the fallen Pokemon that were reborn into legendary beast
I was gonna say they look like pre-evolutions, but I guess in a way they are.
I would have preferred the original legendary dogs to the ones we got.
Ya that what I noticed and they seem to similar to that one episode from the Pokemon company for when it was talking about it they seem to sillmiliar

@@aurahero9842 Oooooohhh, sorry, I didn't get it, it sounded different when I read it😅
I actually like the beta form for the octillery line better then the final line because its much more obvious that its a gun and a tank
Robin Goossens Octillery is a tank? I always thought it was a sniper
@@henry7486 technically it should be an artillery rather than a tank but w/e
Just a couple more to add:
Cloyster's original Red/Blue shell design being rotated 90 degrees
Rotom's Mow Forme (from gen 6 onwards)
Jynx's skin colour change (from gen 2 onwards)
Venomoth's yellow spots it used to have on the back of its wings
Arbok has its design constantly change since different regions have different markings
Nidoqueen losing her teeth
Also Smeargle's colour swap ! And Belossom had much more changes than just a skin colour, has the GSC version is pretty much different to the current version.
MrSylar91 Jynx will always be black in my mind.
Also there’s Tangrowth in the GS beta
The turtle also looks like Dreadnaw kinda.
Well it is a fossil pokemon, maybe the originals slowly evolved into the Grotle line and Dreadnaw. We assume fossil pokemon went extincted but they could have change completely.
Honestly I like the betas for the hoppip line a lot better, they're just so cute!
Also this is a little cursed but suicune's beta looks like a mixture of a mlp character and eeyore
Honestly I though that ‘an mlp’ is the official pronunciation
Because M is pronounced EM
They remind me of a Digimon but I couldn't tell you which one
Look more like that chimera dog from Fullmetal alchemist
@@guildmasterri5995 OMG NO I DID NOT NEED TO HEAR THAT
i feel like a handful of these arent actually design changes, just graphics getting better over time
I feel sad now i actuelly prefer many of the old designs
NEXUS Well yea because you’re used to the final designs so you’d obviously say you want the old designs.
@@property3959 Not really, honestly some of the beta designs are better to me. For example, I hate the hoppip line sjnce they look horrible to me, but the beta designs where they look cat like are adorable and I wish they kept those designs.
Same
@@property3959 Nah, I prefer most of the finals but do like a decent amount betas more.
Had they kept the beta versions of the Legendary beasts, I guess that there wouldn't be the theory that they are "evolved" forms of eeveelutions.
What if those were the original pokémon that got killed in the fire
Either way, it does explain the 'Legendary Dogs' moniker that the group has in spite of Raikou's feline form.
@@d-manhiser1753 Headcanon'd
@@PhoenyxRysing More to do with the fact that Raikou is the odd one out, but also because they really should be the "Legendary Beasts."
@@OtakuUnitedStudio they're all feline. Raikou is a tiger, Entei is a lion, and Suicune is a leopard. None of them are dogs.
Beta Girafarig, Remoraid, Octillery, Magby, Murkrow and Torchic OMG I wish they would've kept those!!!!
I actually would've done a combo of all of Torchic's designs, i would've had what we got with the fiery yellow down on the back of it's head plus the eggshell body like Vullaby.
Wow, Beta Merkrow looks VERY menacing i love it.
Is it me or does he say almost the exact same thing for all 78...
Don't forget to buy nordopass
He also says "also" and "as well" a lot in the same sencence as well.
I'm not sure how I felt about deaf lapras
Last time I was this early Pikachu was still round
Don’t you just love how beta remoraid was just a pistol
Absolutely no one:
HoopsandHipHop: "in any way, shape, or form"
I swear that line comes up in every single video
PlutoPlanetPower “in and of itself” is my favorite one of his lines lol
M09W41 “none the less”
He is such a professional talker
@@M09W41 that's a great one too
also we hear about every other pokemon that we "know and love" it. ugh
I love to see some of these beta design be brought back as new regional forms or Gmax forms
Or maybe a new game where you have regular Pokémon but if a Pokémon had a Beta form, its the Bet
*Beta forms that are included not the final version. Stupid computer sent before I was done.
The original designs of the legendary beasts heavily resemble the body types of their silhouettes in the scenes where they die in the fire before becoming the legendaries. That’s pretty cool.
The gen 1 Koffing sprite you were showing was actually the updated version from Blue. In Red and Green, the skull and crossbones were in the usual position, so perhaps it was some sort of error or something along those lines?
Did he just say "cute and cuddly" about Apom!? 17:30
So basically, a lot of Pokémon have seen "My 600 pound life" and were motivated to get healthy.
underrated comment
My grandmother watches my 600 pound life
Omg wtf! This video has solved the question of “who were the 3 nameless Pokémon in the burned tower.” When Pokémon origins was being created they probably used the beta sprites in the video and then when ho oh revived them it showed the new forms!!!
that "Lickylicky" looked like a Lickitung that was bitten by the same thing as Slowking
another slight change is almost all of eevee's artwork in the tcg until Skyridge, it's tail would not be consistent with the official design we currently have, also you forgot Jinx and Sirfetch'd
if we got sirfetch'd looking like in the beta version it would be so much better. It looks so stupid now.
@@inu4771 yea, I prefer the wandering samurai design over what we ended up getting decades later, really missed opportunity
Whoa whoa whoa whoa. Wait. Ledgendary beasts. Beta designs match the animated short's silhouette of the Pokemon they were before Ho-Oh changed them.
16:56 Boy you just went straight for the nerve with a chainsaw!
That kingdra tho!! It's so much better than what we got.. He's spiky and has CLAWS. Way cooler imo
And looks more like a dragon type
D-MAN Hiser but then puns like sea dragon happened:)
13:12 funnily enough if you look at the pokedex its known as a five star pokemon. the beta version has five stars on its back but the final doesn't..
Loved it! It’s nice to see most the beta and scrapped Pokemon in one video. You should do a video of all the scrapped non used Pokemon with fan art (if feasible). Would be nice to see them all in one place.
Mews old design makes me sick to look at
I love the beta mantine I wish that was truly final it is beautiful
A trend I see in this early designs is that most of them could pass as newer Pokémon from generations V and up. Goes to show how much more of an strict art design was in place that gave Pokémon its identity, contrary to how now a days most new Pokémon look like fakemon, or some unrelated mascot monsters.
Lol. People have been saying this "the new mons don't even look like Pokemon >:(" sh-t since literally Gen 2.
I’ve never seen several of these. Probably one of my favorite videos of yours
Great vid thank you for making it!
“As you can see here blastois is seen with its cannons” you let’s just grind that fact that blastois is being STABBED in that picture
Always love a fresh Hoopa and Hippowdon video
I love the beta mantine, I hope they bring it back as an evolution or mega someday
My favorite is the Noctowl beta. Sneasel and Weavile don't look like weasels to me. They look like cats with feathers.
So you talk about Lickilicky, but don't even bother mentioning that it looks a heck of a lot like Slowking?
... ok then.
I really really miss the old pastel style for the drawings I wish they would bring that back
About that Kakuna arms one, it actually still has them, the arms are those things on it's chest that look like a tie, they're just tucked in.
Hopip old's design really looks like Agumon baby form; the black one with little cat ears. Maybe it was inspired by Digimon... unless the game was made before the anime.
Some of the beta designs could be reutilized as regional variants in future games. The beta versions of Raikou, Entei, and Suicune could be how they looked before the Burned Tower incident.
Bruh the beta Hoppip line looks like something straight out of slime rancher. Also you forgot about the early tangela evolution from the gen 2 beta
One of the best videos ya've ever made.
Hoppip's original design looks like botamon from digimon
Golbat used to have his tongue hanging out, now his tongue isn't visible. Exeggutor's heads used to be bigger. Victreebell was more slim and pointed looking like a pepper. Jigglypuff's eyes have gotten more spaced apart over the years. Blastoise and used to be really fat. Charizard and charmeleon used to have a thicker jaw.
Take a shot every time he says, "If you will"
5:17 That was Blue (and the International Red and Blue) only. The Red/Green as well as Yellow sprites have the skull and crossbones in the same place it always has been.
Also, a lot of that gen 1/gen 2 beta stuff is fan art that I'm not seeing references to...
Only just found your channel today im enjoying your videos. :)
Beta Kingdra is something I never knew I needed
It's looks more a dragon
good video man!
Interesting to see all these different pokémon designs
Kakuna definitely still has its arms, very viably on its front, it always keeps them tucked up to its body
I would love to see all those designs become official new region forms of those pokemons. They could have a new region called Betania or something and have these be the betanish forms. I would love to play with that beta Raikou, such cool design.
I think the scrapped turtle look more like Dreadnaw than Tirtouga. Maybe Tirtouga was based on it, but in Dreadnaw it looks like they went back to the basics. Makes me hopeful that maybe one day we'll see the original legendary dogs in a game..
Wouldn't be the first time one scrapped design got split into multiple final designs. The shell looks like Chewtle's, the legs look like Dreadnaw's, and the head looks like Tirtouga's.
The water dragon things that he said inspired poplio's evolution line are WAAYYYY cooler than the actual poplio line.
Is it weird that I like the beta hoppip line better? They're just so cute and they look like in-training digimon which is really awesome.
woah some of these literally made my jaw drop to the floor
We live in the best timeline after seeing some of these
Something cool that might be a reference to the sharpeedo like beta is that sharpeedo is the signature Pokémon of Archie and team aqua and in oras, Archie uses an anchor to mega evolve sharpeedo.
Arbok originally had stripes on its back in its gen 1 sprite. Early versions also had different face patterns for the different regions/some tcg cards.
Smeargle has its normal and shiny spirite colors switched
The only one I realise change in was arbok with the hood. Great video Hoops
Love your videos hoops
You missed some changes from gen 1 like: 1) the color scheme of bulbasaur, 2) the color of Jynx's face, 3) the noses of Diglett and Dugtrio getting lighter through time, and 4) Dugtrio no longer having the angry eyes
Don't know if someone mentioned it, but in Gen 2 Slugma's eyes were on the "flames" as opposed to below them. Thought it was a cool one to point out.
Me: * sees beta Igglybuff*
Also me: * sees nothing but MadoMagica's Kyuubey in the face *
Kill it
Also, with how far apart the eyes are, I can just see the "W H A T" memes made with its face.
8:29 Blastoise has the ability to retract its cannons into its shell, so it could very well be that
You mentioned it the most notable ones are jinx the bulbasaur line, and charizard shiny.
Golbat had a freakin' tongue.
I'm glad they removed it.
I love so much the deformity and monstrous look from Gen1 sprites and artwork. Now they are so kid-friendly just to sell toys.
@HoopsandHipHop have you thought of bringing the pokemon remixes onto UA-cam/UA-cam music?
"multi-headed-like"
Tank? Ein, zwei, drei?…
Hmm…yeah…I can see why…
As i watch this, i got the memories from when i was playing pokemon adventure red chapter
Cool video, man.
Pikachu's been working out! And he's glad you noticed. With Pikachu, when one starts working out, they all work out.
So we’re not bringing up that original Remoraid looked like a revolver?
18:23 I don't know why it took me this long to notice, but we also never got to meet a character that looked like the woman riding the beta design that resembles a fusion of Blaziken and Latias. I mean, she reminds me of Clair and Kris(the first female player character from Pokemon Crystal), but still.
The colors of the original Tirtouga artwork are similar to the official shiny which is cool!
they should bring some of these back as reginal varients
One things I noticed you missed was Sneasel. Sneasel went through a complete color change after gold and silver.
Sneasel looked more like a tree. Brown body and has green leaves. The yellow dots near its nose and neck was originally white. The leaf on its head had a different design.
Nice video. I liked the Fullmetal Alchemist reference!
You missed the removal Delcatty’s head marking in Gen 3 to Gen 4! It’s super minor and doesn’t actually appear in its official art from Gen 3, but it’s present on the sprite!
Lol I forgot how much the beta designs of the Hoppip family remind me of In-Training/Baby stage Digimon. xD
Also, it's always been my headcanon that the Beta versions of the Legendary Beasts are actually what they looked like before they perished in the fire and were resurrected by Ho-oh. Or at the very least that the anime took design-inspiration from them when showing those shapes in the fire.
The poplio last evo beta idea looks a lot like armourless samurott too.
Also munna in G1 was hinted at
14:47
Santa=Delibird confirmed
Neutering Typhlosion by taking away the permanent flames was the worst decision I’ve ever seen
I think Lapras should still have fangs, make that boi scary. They deserve to be feared.
Yeah, it makes it look more like it can fend for itself and gives a more loch Ness look
I like the idea that perhaps these are just Pokémon who look a little different
Not as drastic as regional forms but some of them just have different patterns, are a little chubbier, have small spines on their back while others of their species dont
To be fair the concept art for the legendary beasts look like their silhouettes from the story of the burned tower.
Plus they look more like dogs
the legendary beasts starting out as Deviantart sparkledogs will never not be hilarious to me
what is that background song I *need* it
edit: the one at the very beginning oof
19:22 If we ever get a regional variant of Sharpedo or a regional evolution for Carvanha, I want it to either resemble this beta design or to look like a shark with an actual tail.
That Popplio link is a bit of a stretch!
100% agree
A long stretch xD
Some of these were interesting.
I'm sure someone has pointed this already but the legendary beasts resembles exactly what we see in that animated series of the three unknown pokemons/animals that died in the fire..
The first time I ever saw Kakuna was playing Blue Version on a GameBoy pocket. In my mind, Kakuna never lost those cool ass scythe arms. My choppy boi. That's the real Kakuna.
