Hell's Kitchen's intro is one of the coolest, most authentically beautiful and stunning pieces of music of all time. I can't thank you enough for this.
Same here. Im somewhat in love-hate relation with DT. Great band with great potential, but sometimes overdoing it, making too long albums filled with technical wanking. They did some great stuff though, Awake is one of my favorite albums for all times
My buddy says about DT "I'm a fan of the musicians, but not their music". That sums it up for me too. Sherinian's work was the last albums that I bought from them.
And don't forget that awesome solo on A change of seasons, One of my two favorite keyboard solos in the whole DT discography. The other is the one in octavarium. In general, Derek solos were always soooo full feeling and I kinda miss that over Jordan's shredding madness when it comes to soloing.
That bloody soloing style of Jordan! I still miss Derek. He was the perfect mix of Kev and Jordan- both soundscapishly musical and technical. As much as I love the original LTE, that session definitely acted like a Pandora's box.
@@AlexanderStemkowski Derek has aged like wine as a musician. I can only imagine what things could be if he was still in the band. Anyway, I love Jordan just as much
Hell's Kitchen is amazing Derek. I still get chills listening to it... You wrote some amazing stuff with DT and you still do it on your own or with BCC... Thanks for all the music man!!!
I'm aware that many of my fellow hardcore DT friends sometimes pass on " Falling Into Infinity " as they all feel it is not a " proper " DT release ( say, comparing it to Scenes From A Memory #2 ). But FII is just as important in the DT catalog. Derek came in at the right time during the " Awake " tour cycle and brought DT up another level in terms of musicianship. FII was my very first DT disc and I absolutely love it, to this very day. There's so much great playing/musicianship/tone on that album! If it wasn't for FII, I would have never known about Derek and his extraodinary work with Planet X, his solo material with Holdsworth, Luke, Yngwie, etc. . . and Sons of Apollo. Derek's music is VERY inspiring!
I hate the ballads of that album, but songs like New Millennium, Burning My Soul, Lines in the Sand, Trial of Tears are standouts... I think the album is over-criticized. Doesn't deserve all the hate
+Derek Sherinian Hell's Kitchen still is the intro to Lines in the Sand! It segues quite nicely on the album. ;) But yeah, really cool to see you play this stuff man!
I'm a huge fan of Falling into Infinity and of course Hell's Kitchen, I'm often puzzled why people dislike it so much. but I'm an even bigger fan of Planet X. Those later albums where you can appreciate quirky progressiveness and fusion.
People dislike it because Mike Portnoy has talked down about it on multiple occasions, and fans can't think for themselves so they have adopted those same connotations that he gave to it.
CodyWanKenobi He was also the ONLY ONE ever to talk down on the album. He had fights with JP about this album, which nearly ended their friendship and band.
I saw you with D.T. about 9 times around CT and NewYork areas in the 90's . Every time was outstanding. I loved all the lava lamps you had on stage. Hearing the intro to 'Lines in the Sand' live, was fucking amazing every time, just a MASSIVE sound you had. I really enjoyed that era of DT and the very organic keyboard tones you brought during that time!
Oh...so what you're saying is that DS contributed to the best two tracks on that album ;-) honestly though after getting to know DS's solo catalog I think he added a great sense of groove that typically lacks on DT albums.
Love your work in DT & post DT. I think my favorite thing you do is in Trial of Tears. Right before James sing "I'm the monster you created". Gives me chills.
Falling into Infinity has always been my favorite Dream Theater album. It may be "commercial", but it's also more focused and less wanky than most of their stuff.
The thing is, it may be "commercial," but it's still progressive rock. Intricate solos, epic drums, interesting keyboard sections... I mean it isn't like it's a Michael Buble album or something. Never understood the criticism for that album as Lines in the Sand, Hell's Kitchen and Trial of Tears are all amazing and definitely not your typical radio variety rock.
Always will be a better album than something like A Dramatic Turn Of Events. Even though Falling Into Infinity could've been doom for the band, they still managed to make something of it. Its not perfect, but oh man some of the songs are genuinely something sorely missed in todays musical world.
I think the great thing about FII is showcasing songwriting than everyone stealing thunders. That's why I love the EastWest/Elektra era. in term of production value, songwriting value. The only thing that need clashes and endless debate is fight between A Change of Seasons vs Octavarium.
Hey Derek, I saw y'all on the falling into infinity tour in December of 1997 at the masquerade in Atlanta,Ga. Y'all opened with lines in the sand, which is one of my favorite songs off the album, along with a trial of tears, which I think is a masterpiece. Cameras weren't allowed in there at that time, but I managed to get one of you and one of Mike. That was an amazing show. Big wreck was the opening act.
i saw them on the tour for Fallin into Infinity.. Amazing show. Met the band and honestly that night Derek came off a bit arrogant and didn't want to chat etc. But the albums he worked on were amazing.
@@dereksherinian6631 ha.. Sorry bro, that's just how I took it that night. But I did say the albums worked on were amazing. And they are my favorite DT albums. But at the same time I guess I should realize that going night after night meeting people etc can get a little tedious. I didn't come away upset or anything. It was one of the best shows I had ever been to. Still to this day. The band was very tight. didn't mean any disrespect. Sorry if it came across that way.
Almost unfair there. Kevin was awesome with the band, but he got 3 albums. They didn't give Derek nearly enough time. And Rudess....he has no style to his playing. It gets so bland after a while...
@@iunnox666 I agree there. ACOS is an amazing song. Don't totally count that as a Derek song though, as Kevin Moore was in the band when it was written. So I know Derek contributed for sure......but Kevin Moore did as well.
Lines in the Sand, Hell's Kitchen and Trial of Tears are some of DT's absolute best. I would've loved to have heard more DT music with Derek; the music back then had more gravitas, and was far more nuanced and textured IMO. Can't wait to check out Vortex!
i just heard lines in the sand today just by case ,and decided to go checking infos about Derek and why he left DT...mdn,hear how he follows Petrucci on the solo ,the middle break is incredible !!!
CE1 and Mutron phaser on the top in the end,the guy is a wizard both playing and sounding wise, love his solo stuff, and Planet X(?) , correct me if I'm wrong please
Cool to hear the story behind the riffs. Falling Into Infinity was the DT album that brought me into the fold. Still sounds good to this day. I still prefer Awake through Falling Into Infinity over the latter DT stuff. Less Wanky.
Hells Kitchen into Lines in the sand is probably my favorite stretch of FII…closely followed by Hollow Years. I know that was a bit of a tough period in the band’s history but your playing and contributions were a serious high point, man…as was FII, regardless of difficulty. It’s in my DT top 5, no question.
Falling into Infinity gets an unfairly bad rap amongst the hardcore DT fans but it's one of my favourites and Derek's keyboard parts play a big part in that!
Goosebumps...... i really liked him being in the band, he gave them an excellent kick ,after the Genius Kevin Moore left.......but he was maybe even ahed of them ,and they replaced him with a more similar one, to the previous incarnation of the band....

Love every song of this album
Hells Kitche and Lines in the sand, Epic sounds, epics riffs, Just Epic
You sir, Mr. Derek, have written history. I understood your style back in those years, and I can tell your keys were magnificent.
all of falling into infinity songs are the best for me
Literally, Lines in the sand was the song that made Dream Theater my favourite band.
One of my best and fav DT parts Era.. Amazing sound org.
If DT still had this ballsy sounds and groovy approach to their productions and compositions d I'd still be buying their music.

Ah. After all these years. Now i know the true reason why Hell's Kitchen and Lines in the Sand sound so good together. Good stuff. Thank you Derek.👍
Falling into Infinity is underestimated. Speaking of keyboards, particularly I love Rhodes piano line in Peruvian Skies
Petrucci, leaving his barstool a winner back in '1999: "Lewk, guys, weneedm'r odat...eeek...odat Rhodes". DT: "You mean,Rudess?"
Long time Sherinian fan. The Midas of Melodius Melodies! I hope Sherinian and Wakeman backfill my eventual funeral. Along with EVH's guitar screams!
