My mom and dad lived in Japan for 2 years just before me being born, and my dad told me about an encounter with the yakuza.
He was driving on his motorcycle to work behind a white van that was going too slow so as a frenchman he decided to drive around it. Suddenly the white van raced beside him and then hit the break to make him stop right there on the road.
Out of the van came out 5 big men who had murder in their eyes, my dad thought it was his last day. One of them came closer, lifted him and took of his helmet just to see it was a tourist.
He then put him back on the ground, smiled and they all went back to their agendas. Rather scary I must say

I've had more than one person tell me that there is no crime in Japan and everyone is an honourable law abiding citizien. And I always say "Are the Yakuza not a thing then?"

Statistically it is a very safe country for the average person, especially as a foreigner. Admittedly, it is due to some past incidents, but the yakuza are actually somewhat friendly to tourists, if you are in their area you can even ask them for directions and they will usually help. Yakuza are pretty ingrained into the Japanese economy so the biggest ones probably make as much money off of their legal proceedings as they do their illegal ones at this point
