When people talk about how destructive and vile Trump's 4 years in office, it's not just telling the world he believed Putin over our 17 US intelligence agencies, or calling Neo-Nazi's "very fine people", or scamming poor and middleclass Americans and giving the uber wealthy the biggest tax cuts in history. No. It is its things like repealing the Johnson Amendment, a sacred protection we had since 1954 that disallowed preaching politics in Churches in order to keep their tax exempt status as a non-profit religious organization, rather than serving as a pulpit for preaching politics. But like everything Trump, touches he killed that too. And now we see the result.

Yes, organizations that have a tax exempt status (such as churches) are prohibited from participating in political activity, including preaching crap like this guy is doing! And some of these churches take in a LOT of $$$. Start paying your taxes if you’re going to talk like this.

Congress really needs to start getting more serious about the Separation of Church and State. Religion has no place in politics and vice versa. We should be well beyond a daily prayer, of any or no denomination, in our Congress. If I were a member of Congress, I would take offense at such an action, being a non-religious person. I would probably make some sort of formal protest, stating that I feel any such expression of gratitude or reliance on a mythical being as being not only forced upon me, but as it's done daily, a form of coercive indoctrination to a concept the Constitution clearly says should NOT be part of politics.
That being said, I believe any church that takes a political stance, and endorses a candidate/s or party should be stripped of their tax exempt status. Also, that any politician claiming to be running 'under the guidance/will' of a religious figure/god/deity, or with a religion based agenda, should be barred from running for or taking elected office.
I know the haters are going to attack me for these statements, and sure, bring it on. The thing is, in the United States we have a Constitution that guarantees us a separation between the political sphere and religion. Our Founders knew, better than many today do, what types of atrocities arise from mixing governing and religion. I am a member of a large family on both sides. They are heavily pentecostal or church of god. My father was a pentecostal pastor for many years. He is dead now and never spoke of politics from the pulpit. He helped and supported many people and this isn't about him. It is about most of the rest of them. When Trump came along, they abandoned their religion en masse to embrace him. I'm not a church type. I gave them up long ago over their deeply seated racism. But, the family connections remained. Now that is over. I made it clear to all of them that as long as they were Trump supporters using their pulpits to support him that they would never darken my door again or sit at my table. Final point. It isn't about Trumps failings. It is about their failings choosing him. In my view, no trump supporter is or can be a Christian.

As an atheist I have always had a level of tolerance for religion because I felt that there was a segment of the population that needed it to tell them to do what is moral because they could not choose to do so on their own…. Not so much any more.
