Nah, not a nightmare. I love it. I left doing reefer because I was sick of lazy @$$ warehouse workers taking anywhere from 4-16 hours to load or unload me. That and I like to be physically active. If I'm going to sit up to 4 hours until I'm rolling, I want it to be myself who is doing the work, and myself who is the only person to blame. Not to mention how much you get to own your work and the pride in seeing the job you did rolling behind you.
I was thrown into a job where i improvised cargo handling. My shipping boss always wanted to see how i rigged payloads. My favorite tool is heavy cargo nets. The Mikes of the road keep the world safe.
Watched the first minute and a half and already found 2 issues. You're supposed to use beveled lumber for coils, most shippers won't load without it. Second, unless your dowel pins on your trailers are significantly higher rated than mine, 1 pin is only good for 5,000lbs not 8,000 lbs. 3 chains at 5,000 is 15k securement, 80% (legal minimum) on 21k coils would be 16,800 meaning you're under secure. Need a 4th chain to be legal on that load.
Ben flatbedden for 25 years We call them spools and pockets a spool is rated at 5000 pounds but they count both sides of the trailer one on each side so that's 10000 pounds tied on. But 3 ×8 isn't 21
@@robertscott305 I've always been told it doesn't matter if it's one side or 2, the lowest WLL is still 5,000 so you're securement is only 5,000. At least that's what I've been told by the DOT, and MTO trainer at work.
@@HansraRulez are chains are rated at 9400 pounds and I will use 3 on a 21,000 pound coil been do it for years we rum Benson trailers and the spoils are rated at 5,500 written right on the trailers you use two of them one on each side that a 11,000 pounds been DOT 100 of times never been written up for a inscure load. never had anything come off my trailer ever. Where you learn how to do your job
@@robertscott305 first of all, no grade 7 chain is rated for 9400lbs, it is either 6600 or 11300lbs etc. Secondly, one spool is rated 5500lbs good, one on each side doesn’t make them load bearing for 11000lbs, it is 5500lbs you have use 2 spool on both side to for 11000lbs load bearing capacity. You always count weakest link in load securement. If chain is 4700lbs rated, your securement will count as 4700lbs not 5500lbs. And if you’re using 11300lbs rated chain to secure, and you’re using single spool each side is rated 5500lbs, that securement will be count as 5500lbs not 11000lbs. And 3 chains are good for 21000lbs. As per FMSCA you need at least 50% of the weight of cargo to be secured. I prefer to do atleast 75% Attaching a fmsca cargo securement link for you, please read before you reply. Thank you, Good luck. www.fmcsa.dot.gov/sites/fmcsa.dot.gov/files/docs/Drivers_Handbook_Cargo_Securement.pdf
Shoutout to this dude, willing to get down and dirty but that guy at the end kinda scared me the way he was cranking that strap if that bar slip 😢 always crank with both hands on the bar
Isn’t the dunnage supposed to be beveled or the coil bunk built so the dunnage faces the flat edge to the coil? That’s what the CVSA NA standard specifies.
Thank YOU for doing this. This video is vital and helpful. You should 100 percent make more videos similar to this. Before I began flat bedding I had to search all over UA-cam for tips and tricks. Also can you zoom in with the camera or move closer when demonstrating the straps being folded and secured. In general go closer when demonstrating in the future. Please and thank you . Standing from a distance doesn't help lol.
You can’t use square wood for the coil bunkers. The wood has to be beveled so there’s no damage to the coil n it also sits off the deck accordingly to the Mto. And on the coil with the plastic rings still needs coil protection from chains cause the plastic isn’t a protection from the chains. Which is also illegal according to the Mto.
Hello, i have question about medical requirements. Specifically i have THYROID ilness (hashimoto, hypothyroidsm) can i be professional truck driver in Canada with this dyognose? Thanks
Do you not use coil carrier trailers over there? This is mind blowing, I'm in the UK, coil bunks were banned in the late 60s here, and if a driver was seen chaining a coil in a mill he'd be banned for life, really, it damages the outer laps particularly for autonomy or galv. You can find videos of coil carriers on UA-cam, but I'm going to watch this again since I can't quite believe what I'm seeing.
Umm. I don’t prefer to short strap in the winch. I’ve seen straps loosened up and loads shifted from relays I’ve picked. My company stresses no to short strapping. I still see some.
that's my daily job, For improvement : the rubber on the inner steel coil side is too thin. you have to replace it with thick rubber. to maintain coil quality :)
Now n days nobody knows how many chains pull back and how many pull forward , drivers just throw some chains anywhere they like in the coil..ask a flatbeder if they know how many chains go back per weight on a coil. Years back california gave us a table of how many chains go back and how many go forward per coil weight ....
U have a major problem. U can not use 4x4s with these racks u must have belvled lumber most shippers in USA wouldn't load u. There is racks that can make them right but those are for belvled lumber only ur coil can not sit on edge of board like that very unsafe
@@Invictus13666 don't make it correct they make coil racks for the 4x4 but those are not it and every facility u go to has rules some may not enforce it some will. It can damage coil and you can see board in video wants to twist cuz coil is sitting on edge the racks being used in this video are not correct boards must sit flat up against coil and must have rubber mats down and boards should hold coil off floor of trailer and the fact someone may use this video to secure thiers plz relay that info coils are nothing to mess with I haul them daily and see these people do this and they may get away with it but it's not safe inform those people who don't know this the correct racks will hold board at a angle flush against coil
This is not the guy to watch. The stake pockets should not be used like he is using them. They can tear out. Use two spools and do a teardrop attachment. The timbers are not beveled so they are illegal. They are deemed illegal because they put stress high on the arrowhed ends of the coil rack. When he straps, it is illegal too. He is lazy and is only half-strapping on the winches. To be legal, the strap is not bent in half and pushed into the winch. You must run the strap all the way through the winch. It kills me to see training videos on here where people are teaching and don't know what the hell they are doing. The first chain he hit with his hand wasn't even tight.
Mark should be on UA-cam more. Great lesson for flatbedders. Load securement, their nightmare 😅😅
Thanks for sharing! Coming up.

Why do you have 42,000LB parked right smack dab in the middle of the trailer? Space them out more so you have better coverage on the axels.
I haul coils from Hamilton on the daily basis, should definitely be spaced out more.
