    So true about newbies, it’s taking me about 2.5 hours to tarp and secure a 35’ trailer. It’s unacceptable, but it’s where I’m at. I am getting better with it each time though. Mainly, I just run out of gas and get tired. I’m dealing with 100+° temps in the Deep South and tarping just wipes me out. I have to go shower immediately, every time I tarp a load.

    OK, so I'm a company driver so I may be excluded from this conversation, but there is NO reasons to crimp any bungee. I know it's cute or whatever to have a "secret", but they will not damage your tarp if they're facing outward... Just use your damn bungee the way it was meant... There is NOT enough pressure to ever puncture a tarp strictly from outward pressure on a bungee. Do almost any load and you'll see. Just f-ing use them...

    The only problem I see is something a Utah DOT gave me a paper about. He pulled me into the scale one morning in Price,UT,now granted I pull tankers.I had 3 bags of chains tarp strapped to my catwalk behind the truck. He informed me that any device used to secure something,anything,to a commercial vehicle has to have a load rating and tarp straps do not have one. So in other words you can use the tarp straps to make it look pretty,but you’d better put a strap,or something over the tarps or it’s a load securement fine.

    The only thing you did right was putting the back sheet on first, as to the rest, politeness stops me from commenting. Except, young man, if you keep lifting a rolled sheet in that fashion your back won't last the course. You'll be knackered long before retirement. Here's the clue, stand it on end, drop into a full crouch with your knees under you, let the roll fall evenly on your shoulder then do the lifting with your thighs. Bon continuation. ;-)

    Do you actually log on duty time while you tarp/secure? Can you still run around 3k a week?

    • @pandasgarage5684
      @pandasgarage5684 2 роки тому +1

      The tarps are heavy and a bit awkward to move around, but if you just follow proper lifting technique you'll be fine. Some shippers will also lift your tarps onto the load with their forklift too, just ask them about it when you check in.
      If you're going to be a company driver you can also try and find a company that runs curtainside or rolling tarp trailers, that eliminates the hassle of tarping but it also limits the kind of freight you can haul.

    On the ends, pull the corners across first, then flap the centre over them. That way it is cleaner with fewer pockets to trap water, and less chance of the airflow ballooning the sheets.
    I see you are wearing gloves, but be wary of wearing rings. In any manual work they can catch and result in serious injury. A fellow driver lost a finger when he put his hand on the edge of a trailer as he jumped off it.
    Very good advice at 3-00. Concentrate on doing a job correctly, and you will get quicker without trying to.

    I can save you even WAY more time. Instead of rolling out the tarp on top of the load. Roll it out on the ground and have the forklift guru center the tarp on his forks. Put a small rope on each corner and have him lift it to the center of the load. Use the rope to pull the tarp over the other side of the load and secure the two corners with the rope (temporarily). As Forklift Guru backs out, the rest of tarp will fall to the side. Your tarp should now be ready to roll and bungee. EZ PZ Chicken Squeezy.

    Ok, so here's the thing...if this is such a pain, why flatbed as opposed to dry van? What are the rewards of flatbed that make it worth the extra hassle?

    Give you a thumbs up thank you for your explanation & your time, The only part that I didn't like about your video is Mercer they were real dicks to me they want me to join the dry van and I want to go and stepdeck

    • @DrivenTrucking
      @DrivenTrucking  5 років тому

      Thank you 😊 I’m sorry to hear that, I don’t hear very many of these stories but I’m sure they’re out there. If I remember correctly, I think they require 6 months minimum flatbed before you can pull a step but that’s weird they’re pushing you toward dry van.

    • @DrivenTrucking
      @DrivenTrucking  5 років тому +1

      For a load like that 30-45 minutes. Because of all the camera switching etc, it took over an hour and a half. We do get 100% of tarping pay as well

Pricey mistake: I should have watched your video first. But well, better late than never just again thank you bro.
