No i've never heard of any other Aussie's putting tomato sauce in their gravy however there is a thing in Oz where quite a lot of people put tomato sauce on nearly everything so maybe that is the origin of the line? Thanks for the reaction. Another Paul Kelly favourite of mine is "Careless". Well worth a listen.
Merry Xmas and happy gravy day to all our Australian compadres, now that’s said here’s my honest view on the track - I’m not Australian so the cultural ethos and effect of this song goes right over my head , I really like this track just as a piece of music , great chord progression, simple and easy to listen to , what’s not to like ? 👍🏴
Easy way to think about the song is its the musings of a bloke writing a letter to his family, he made some mistakes in life and is spending Xmas in Jail. He usually makes the gravy and gives advice on that as well as an apology for stuffing up and missing Xmas with family. He has written some good songs Paul Kelly, he is worth checking out.
@@iankearns774 Ian , I’m susceptible to tear jerking songs so tried NOT to follow the lyrics too closely as I knew as a dad there was a chance I’d have a wee greet and as I’ve said before , in Scotland it’s illegal for blokes to openly weep without an obvious personal injury … plus crying REALLY hurts 😆… it’s like someone rubbing a slice of Lemon in yer eye 😉.. so it’s a nice song , and though I never listened to them intently im sure the lyrics mean a lot to most folk 👌 👍🏴
@@jaymacgee_A_Bawbag_Blethering is the suicide rate high in Scotland? Because crying and showing your emotions is a NO NO here in Aotearoa New Zealand as well and it's not healthy to hold them in
I think this song actually spawned the whole ''Gravy Day'' thing in Australia. Paul Kelly hasn't done so badly for a Countdown chancer in the early 80's.
I’m making gravy on Christmas Eve while watching this. (Yes, adding flour, salt, a little red wine and a dollop of tomato sauce) My mum will miss Christmas this year as she has COVID so is staying home. This song and this reaction got me right in the feels.
Great song! He has a big songbook of greats. I first saw him perform back in the late 70's, and thought he didn't stand a chance at making it big time. Obvioiusly I was proven wrong.
Wonderful thank you . He's in prison and going to miss christmas with the family. Any other years he makes the gravy. Its too hot for a roast lunch in Australian but we have 1 anyway. Merry Christmas to you both and the noise maker out of shot. We call ketchup tomato sause by the way.
I do not like gravy or tomato sauce but it still a nice song. I remember the craziness at height of lockdown here when there was a curfew at 8pm. If you were found driving on road you needed to have some essential workers letter to show any police. I was working overnight at time and remember at one point there was basically no cars on the road and I live in a city of 5 million people. I barely saw the cops on road either so never needed to show them any letter if they had of pulled me over. You were not meant to shop anywhere more than 5 kilometres from your residence for essential items and not meant to have any visitors at your residence. Cannot remember how long this went on but seemed about six months at the height of it. My Dad passed away in 2018 so glad he did not have to live through the crap. If he was sick in hospital on his last legs at that time it would have been horrible. Feel sorry for people that lost people they loved in this time period.
My sister passed from cancer in 2019 and I had the same thought in lockdown - how horrific it would have been if she died and we couldn’t be with her in the weeks leading up to it. It’s a weird/guilty feeling, being sort of glad they died earlier.

Don't know if anyone else explained this to you, but Tomato sauce in Australia = Ketchup in the US and Canada. Lovely reaction to a touching song that breaks me every time I hear it or play it. However, now that you've been touched by it, you will also have to celebrate Gravy Day on the 21st of December like we do here in Aus.
Paul usually puts you straight into the story in the first 'Paragraph' so to speak. He usually deals with family and Indigenous matters. The words in this version were changed a bit not to upset the Alphabet people. Gravy generally is made from reducing the left over 'juice' from the cooked meat. Adding flour, wine is fairly normal. Tomato sauce is probably an Aussie thing since we use so much of it.

Australia suffered a very hard, long lockdown. Virtually 2 years, even traveling interstate. This is what makes this extra poignant. A lot of us missed significant events, personally a parents death. This is is a difficult listen
I always think of gravy as a metaphor in a sense. Joe is in prison and he's sorry for what he did and how it affected the family, "Tell them all I'm sorry". Then he talks of making it up to everyone "You know one of these days I'll be making gravy, I'll be making plenty, I'm gonna pay them all back". Maybe he took money from family members? He's going to be out in 6 months (with good behaviour), stay straight and earn enough 'gravy' to repay what he took. Maybe, or, maybe it's just about the warm condiment for the roast.
In lock down i didn't get to Hug my three boys for a year different bubble but i was allowed to travel for work and I'd do their shopping in my full biohazard suit and drop it off on the table outside their door after wiping everything down first but they would stay inside until i was gone but it kept them safe and that's all that matters to me
Hey, here’s another thought. For “Who did it better” comparisons, RockWiz duets are an absolute mother lode of great versions. Tim Rogers and Rebecca Barnard’s Stop Dragging My Heart Around; Clare Bowditch and Tex Perkins’ Fairytale of New York for instance
Yeah, he not normally music I would listen to be he such a great writer and kind of a folk singer that cannot help but respect him and listen to anything that crosses my path. Jewel is a similar artist like that over in North America.
That is an actual recipe you pull the roast out then add the flour as the song goes. Tomato sauce is kind of like your American ketchup their are less spices added I think so it is slightly different. Just a richer tomato flavour.

Melbourne was terrible in the way they treated covid, and I was very unimpressed with NSW Premier, Gladys Berejiklian. That woman was idiot.
Anyway, to leave it on a nice note, again I say Merry Christmas to you, Ian.
You are the second Reactors I've watched to day who said: "Got to change the subject." This version of this song gets everyone in the feels.
I think that the tomato sauce in the gravy is an aussie bloke thing. Tomatoes sauce is practically a food group for some people 😂 🇳🇿
Happy Gravy Day. This song always gives the feels. This is the best version to react too. It gives you a new appreciation for family & friends,
No i've never heard of any other Aussie's putting tomato sauce in their gravy however there is a thing in Oz where quite a lot of people put tomato sauce on nearly everything so maybe that is the origin of the line? Thanks for the reaction. Another Paul Kelly favourite of mine is "Careless". Well worth a listen.
Merry Xmas and happy gravy day to all our Australian compadres, now that’s said here’s my honest view on the track -
I’m not Australian so the cultural ethos and effect of this song goes right over my head , I really like this track just as a piece of music , great chord progression, simple and easy to listen to , what’s not to like ?
@@iankearns774 Ian , I’m susceptible to tear jerking songs so tried NOT to follow the lyrics too closely as I knew as a dad there was a chance I’d have a wee greet and as I’ve said before , in Scotland it’s illegal for blokes to openly weep without an obvious personal injury … plus crying REALLY hurts 😆… it’s like someone rubbing a slice of Lemon in yer eye 😉.. so it’s a nice song , and though I never listened to them intently im sure the lyrics mean a lot to most folk 👌
👍🏴
Go on Jay tell us what you really think. Your honest opinions are perfect don't apologise for them 😊
@@jaymacgee_A_Bawbag_Blethering is the suicide rate high in Scotland? Because crying and showing your emotions is a NO NO here in Aotearoa New Zealand as well and it's not healthy to hold them in
I think this song actually spawned the whole ''Gravy Day'' thing in Australia. Paul Kelly hasn't done so badly for a Countdown chancer in the early 80's.
Happy gravy day. Best wishes for the festive season
Great reaction to this song but never apologise for your emotions guys please keep it up
I’m making gravy on Christmas Eve while watching this.
Thank you for taking a chance on what is an off putting title. I really enjoyed your reaction, happy gravy day people ❤
Happy Gravy Day!!! I completely forgot until seeing this video. Anyway, I'll do my usual guide to best PK clips - recommend.
Paul Kelly And The Coloured Girls - Before Too Long nzoz1986
Paul Kelly And The Coloured Girls - Darling It Hurts nzoz1986
Paul Kelly And The Coloured Girls - Too Her Door nzoz1987
Paul Kelly And The Messengers - Dumb Things nzoz1989
Paul Kelly And The Dots - Alive And Well Antipodes
I'll leave other songs to everybody else.
Easily add Deeper Water, Love never runs on time, From Stkilda to Kings Cross and I reckon the Haniers may like an early one with the Dots, Billy Baxter.
@@iankearns774 Those I would also suggest. I think there are good quality videos that come up first in search results. Good quality videos of the ones listed above are hidden, or tough to get hold of.
I'll see what I can do with the Billy Baxter song. It seems not to be properly available on YT as an original recording. I'll talk to somebody and see if I can get a good audio. I have the original video, but the sound needs some working...
Paul Kelly - From St Kilda To Kings Cross nzoz1985
Paul Kelly & The Dots - Alive And Well Antipodes
For a Canadian link, try Paul’s nephew (I think), Dan Kelly duetting with Martha Wainwright with Slave to Love on Rockwiz. Whew. I thought they were gonna have to get a room
Paul wrote it for a Christmas album (it was a yearly thing to raise funds for the Salvo's Red Shield Appeal (Salvation Army).
Gets me every single time - been listening to it for years *sigh
I’m 57 years old, lived in Australia all my life. Never heard this song.
A modern master balladeer!
This song and White Wine in the Sun 😭💔💗
The best line is..
“Early Christmas morning , when I’m standing in line..
It's a special song, and hits a little different with the re-release through covid.
*Mike Oldfield ft Maggie Reilly - Moonlight Shadow - 4K Remastered - Official Video 1983 Austech*
Please jot this down where ever it has been requested. It's the best upload of ''Moonlight Shadow'' on UA-cam. It was a big hit in Europe and Australia, but I don't think it caught fire in North America and Canada. Should have...
I didn't want to watch this because it's one of the songs that's ALWAYS on during our Christmas. I got nothing against this song, but... every year!!!!! I'm glad I watched it now, and I am pleased to see the two of you get something out of it.
Merry Christmas xoxoxo
I cant listen to this song without welling up.
On a far lighter note , those of us who love the movie Empire Records celebrate Rex Manning day annually on April 8th & it's fun to see the name trending on social media. It is , a great day 👍
I'll check it out! 🙂
Australia suffered a very hard, long lockdown. Virtually 2 years, even traveling interstate. This is what makes this extra poignant. A lot of us missed significant events, personally a parents death. This is is a difficult listen
Please don't apologise, we love you.
“Cute”?! That’d be like us calling The Tragically Hip’s ‘Bobcaygeon’ quaint.
@@planetcountryradio8622 but how long was he in prison for before he made the phone call
In lock down i didn't get to Hug my three boys for a year different bubble but i was allowed to travel for work and I'd do their shopping in my full biohazard suit and drop it off on the table outside their door after wiping everything down first but they would stay inside until i was gone but it kept them safe and that's all that matters to me
it's true, it is gravy day.
I like to add Worcestershire sauce to my gravy, great song 🎶
Happy Gravy day!
Thank you so much for giving us a bonus reaction video! I love this song!!!! 💓
Gets me every time also. You really should try our style of gravy too.
I can never listen to how to make gravy without also listening to the other Aussie xmas song, Tim Minchin's White Wine In The Sun
Then you should check out our reaction to it. It was great. We had to blur the video, though.
What a lovely reaction! Cheers.
Great reaction Its the real deal
Happy gravy day 🇦🇺👊
🤙
Onya for checking out PK's Chrissie classic. A lot more brill stuff from this bloke.
Any Paul Kelly is good by me
Yeah, he not normally music I would listen to be he such a great writer and kind of a folk singer that cannot help but respect him and listen to anything that crosses my path.
Jewel is a similar artist like that over in North America.
don't worry guys we all cry when we listen and sing this song and yes I put a dollop of tomato sauce in🙂
That is an actual recipe you pull the roast out then add the flour as the song goes. Tomato sauce is kind of like your American ketchup their are less spices added I think so it is slightly different. Just a richer tomato flavour.
Find his other story songs - “To her door” is a classic.
We know it Christmas on gravy day we know we're about to be inundated with rellos,
Gravy Day!
If How to Make Gravy brings you to tears, this will have you an emotionl wreck. My all time favourite Paul Kelly song, Deeper Water.

Indeed.
Today is gravy day? You could cook a roast chicken out side in the heat of the day😮 i hate summer when is the toothless organisation the UN going to ban summer? I wish they would get to it yesterday it should be a crime against humanity anything over 20 degrees Celsius should be jailed 😊 . Paul Kelly is great I've seen him with the coloured girls with my dad about 35 years ago 👏👏👏 his vocals are beautiful no frills just great 👍
Happy gravy day everybody
Merry Christmas guys and all the best for the New Year 👍
Well done excitable Mel. Oi oi oi. Merry Christmas mate
Yes to tomato sauce and red wine in the gravy 😊
My eyes leak every time I watch this.
The only thing to follow that song with is 'White wine in the sun' by Tim Minchin that is Australia in 2 songs. Cheers
We did that song just recently as well. Great stuff.
I’m glad you enjoyed it, but I recommend you go back and listen to it again but pay attention to the words, it’s really a beautifully sad story
Paul kelly absolute aussie legend Who's gunna make the gravy is about the black sheep of the family being locked up in jail at xmas
I’ve just spent a cool 2 hrs going back over your archive checking to see if you’d already played songs I’d like you to consider going forward Post crimbo.. 👀
The Clash - Guns on the roof
The The - Uncertain Smile
The Stranglers - Curfew
Sisters of Mercy - This Corrosion
Steely Dan - Haitian Divorce
Green Day/U2 - The Saints are coming
The Saints - I’m Stranded
World Party - Ship of Fools
Cactus World News - Years Later …
Bit cheeky asking for that many but if you don’t ask you don’t get, I’d wager most tracks your not familiar with . If possible if/when you decide to play any of them if there’s a video for it great , if not then Top of The Pops or Old grey whistle test appearances , if not then the album cut please , I find on this medium that live gig cuts just don’t do the songs justice , just my personal preference tbh .. well cheers for hopefully considering them 👏
👍🏴
Paul isn't for everyone, but another song that has the potential to grab your heart at one point is Deeper Water.
There's a few versions, but I'd suggest this one: ua-cam.com/video/83nY6ROH3KI/v-deo.htmlfeature=shared
Like most Paul Kelly songs, the music is simple, and his vocal delivery is quasi Dylan/Springsteen, but the lyrics are where he shines so focus on the story if you can.
If you want an Australian Christmas song, try white wine in the sun by Tim minchin
We did that one.
After having the injection, they would have had the antibodies to fight off the infection. Thankfully they had the injection.

Paul Kelly & The Messengers - Careless nzoz1989
Paul Kelly And The Coloured Girls - Dumb Things nzoz1989
C n C , might as well get hung for a sheep as well as a Lamb .. 👀
May I suggest a mega “ who did it better ? “…
The Beatles - Hey Bullfrog
Fanny - Hey Bullfrog .. yes I’m aware legions of Brits n Aussies just choked on their cornflakes there 😅, but not only are they a real band but they’re bloody good too !
IF you do it please can you make the Fanny cut the live one they did for a German tv show with a vivid “ blue screen “ behind them ?
Cheers 🍻 that’s my burst of requests done for a wee while ✊

The looks I'd get at the supermarket walking in wearing my disposalable bio hazard suit fully enclosed mask suit and gloves with a tool belt full of spare gloves N95 mask's to hand out to people (we had box's and box's thousands of them for entering work site's)hand sanitizer and antibacterial wipes for everything that went into the trolley people would stay well away from me even though i was the safest person to be near
Our Bob Dylan. Big call, but he is. And unlike Bob, he can sing as well as write musical poetry.
a little bit of vegemite is good in gravy
Btw what we call tomato sauce you call ketchup
Isn't it different to hear a song from a person in prison that actually shows you they are a normal person
