The comparison to Bob Dylan isn’t because they sound alike it’s because they both write songs with wonderful imagery telling everyday stories that resonate with people.
Paul Kelly is Australia's best poet in my opinion. His song BRADMAN about the Bodyline cricket series between Aust & UK is briliant. All his songs have aussie heart. I love the line "I'm even gonna mss Roger coz there's sure as hell no one in here i wanna fight"
In Oz, this is one of our favourite Xmas songs. And of course 21st Dec is now Gravy day. Our Paul is Wonderful songwriter. He is also wonderful live. He is continuing a long and illustrious career. He wrote this for a Xmas album.
The most complex of emotions, sentiments & heartaches expressed so sweetly & simply. A story of a man in prison writing a letter to his brother about the Xmas he's going to miss being locked up. Utterly brilliant.
An absolute living treasure, with literally hundreds and hundreds of songs released in more than 40 years (sometimes releasing 2 or 3 albums in a year). He has written from every point of view and in a dozen different styles. You could spend years on his catalogue but a couple I think you would like are; 'Every Fucking City' , 'Everything's turning to white' , 'When I first met your ma' & 'To her door' Well worth a look.
My favourite Christmas song - brings a completely different perspective to that time of year. 21st December is Gravy Day in Australia. Lyrics make you tear up every time! You should do ya self a favour and also check out: - Deeper Water (live, from the same concert as this one) - To Her Door - Dumb Things - Winter Coat (might be hard to find) The 'Dylan' comparison is more about his song writing ability rather than his delivery.
Ok...now were off Jimmy and onto Paul Kelly...another icon of Aussie music. Love him❤❤❤ This is a great song... One of his first 'rocky' numbers 'Darlin' it Hurts', about a hooker in Darlinghurst. love it.❤❤ 'Under the Sun' from the album of the same name...about growing up (Fremantle, near where I live, even gets a mention)❤❤ Such a story teller...'Out the Door' is one of the most played songs. 'Don't Stand So Close To The Window', too many to list...❤❤ Glad to see you're getting to hear what a lot of us grew up listening to👍👍🇭🇲🇭🇲
21st December is gravy day down in oz a christmas song check the official vid its heartbreaking also try anything off his album post back when he was young
Apparently Paul was asked to contribute a song for a Christmas album, but the song he wanted to do was taken, so he wrote his own. And this is it. It is gritty, I have never been in jail, but I imagine this is how it would affect you, missing your kids at Christmas, worrying that someone would dance too close with your wife at Christmas, then realising it's just your head playing with you. This song is really written so well, I don't remember it being a single, but it is one of his most loved songs.
Thanks Rory for this special song, since it's release many years ago it has lasted and will last eternally as it hits the heart hard and deep. To give you some background on it, Paul was asked to cover a song for a charity Christmas album for the Salvation Army, he wanted to do a song but that was already taken so he said what if I write one myself so he went about doing that. He was concerned as it is about a guy in prison missing home at Christmas (he wanted that feel like white christmas of someone away missing home) the producer said don't worry it will get on the album and the rest is history. There is a newer version he released in 2021 during the world wide COVID waves and as so many here in Australia and elsewhere were in Lockdown fans sent in videos of them singing the song and it was edited and released, I would HIGHLY recommend you watch that or even react to it as it does give the song a whole new feel with all being like Dan locked away from those they loved at Christmas. All the best well done glad you loved it. Keep Safe Keep Strong 🦘🦘🦘🦘🎶🎶🎶🎶
Hey Rory...How is Nala going?...I swear she already looks bigger since last week. I am home in recovery from a long illness, so will try to catch your channel more often.❤
Ah! you are off down the Aussie music rabbit hole. Paul Kelly does it in a wonderful Aussie style. We have sooo many great musicians here that many around the world have never heard of. Jimmy Barnes' son, Jackie, was on the drums.
It wouldn't be a stretch to say Paul Kelly is just about Australia's most beloved entertainer. The single most diverse crowds I have ever seen. All ages, all walks of life. Paul Kelly is only comparable to Dylan insomuch as he's a story teller. I wouldn't go much further than that. Just about the worst thing you could accuse an Aussie of being is trying too hard to be American.
Words And Music is not everyone’s cuppa’ but from what you say in your reactions I think you’d like it. A song about how music strikes at our essence; there he invokes the Dylan and Beatles of his youth but by now Kelly must of made 40+ albums and his music is more diverse, far more frank, often more poetic without the wank and all from the perspective of someone who is always falling in love with the world around him as opposed to closeting himself against it as does Dylan. Kelly references literature a lot .. but I don’t think he’s ever opened a Sparks Guide to do a hack on the significance of Moby Dick.
I like seeing young people discover old greats. I first saw you reacting to John Martyn. I remember how when we first left home for the capital city and found out JM was going to appear on The OGWT at the BBC. We didn’t have a tele or a car but we found one at a dealers and had to walk it home balanced on the seat of a bicycle. But we didn’t have an antenna either so we needed someone to steer the transmission with a coat hanger and strings. It was still better than the vid you reacted to; I guess cos it was the BBC and he was on his best behaviour but when he was live he was mostly wasted as he was on the video you saw. Plus he was doing a duo and I don’t think he was good at that either. Next time you do Martyn, you should do a studio thing. He had 2 great albums.
I think he completely missed the context of the song. The fact that he is in gaol, that he screwed up, that he'll miss his family, that he will be standing in line for dinner like every other day while his family are all together.
Please don't compare Paul Kelly to Bob Dylan, Paul has been around for years and is his own person/voice. He is a wonderful song writer and singer. A great Australian story teller. Check out his other songs.
This is my favourite Christmas song, the only realistic one I’ve heard. Paul Kelly is my favourite storyteller
Beautiful pup...and song

Paul Kelly is iconic in Australia. A true story teller.
My favourite Australian song. It’s always on high rotation around Gravy Day - 21st Dec.

Just saw him at Freo prison under the stars this summer gone! Chills, amazing
So glad you were able to listen to this, it will be in your mind at Christmas now.

This never gets old - We listen to it every Xmas . It's a bit of a tradition in my household 🇦🇺 ❤❤❤
I love Paul Kelly ❤
I get goosebumps every time

Your smile said it all 🇦🇺 🦘🦘🦘❤❤❤❤❤
A song with no chorus just all straight lyrics with no repeats

Paul Kelly isn't the Aussie Bob Dylan . Bob Dylan is the American Paul Kelly .

He’s not trying to emulate Dillon in any way.

He can right a song , but he can't sing
