My physio used this exact language when discussing my diastasis recti. She never told me how big of a gap I had but instead focused on my ability to hold tension in my abdomen as well as pelvic floor/core connection. So she checked to see if I could hold tension while doing a push up so that there wasn’t any coning, she assessed to see if I had incontinence, and did a pelvic exam to see if I am able to have a good core/ pelvic floor connection. She also referenced this new study that views diastasis recti from the perspective of tension in the connective tissues (linea alba) and said that the language and mindset around this needs to change. Diastasis recti should not be seen as an injury, rather an adaptation of the body to accommodate a physiological change. So the answer to the question of healing is, you could be “healed” but still have a gap. As long as you have core strength, you’re ok.

I found this really helpful and encouraging. I thought the gap had to be gone to consider myself healed and go back to planks. Thanks, Amy!

How soon after fixing my diastasis recti can I return to normal exercises like crunches, planks and so on?

There is no answer to the question in this video, unfortunately.

Thanks for sharing! Is it normal to have no gap (firm line everywhere) but have a squishy 1 finger gap at the belly button? I can go down to the first bend in my finger at my belly button. Do I need to do anything specific to help it? Besides that I feel strong and able to do just about any exercise.

can the diastasis recti be bulging? Mine is more of a bulging. I have addressed this with a few doctors and they all brushed it off as I have 'stretched out' skin due to having 4 pregnancies. the area the most is just around the belly button area. I have two fingers wide and with my index finger- up to my second (middle) knuckle deep. Is that considered 'normal'?
Thank you for your response and support.

What is the best way to heal it?
I’ve had a problem getting my diastasis recti strength back ever since I had my last child 20 something years ago....
Even before I had kids I had, the only way to describe it, a pouch in my lower stomach.

Tummy tucks have nothing to do with ab seperation.. educate yourself before you open your mouth.

@@AC-iw5mv if you are really struggling with it, the only way to fix it, just like with loose skin, is surgery. Get over it- as in accept there may be money involved and you may need to save. Do what you need to do to be happy. This physical therapist is doing vaginal exams? Seems a bit out of scope for a PT. That's a bit concerning. Once those muscles are torn apart, they require surgery to fix. The only hope is that your abbs and core are in pretty damn good shape and you are doing some pretty serious weight training prior to pregnancy. Hope that is a bit more helpful.

Elizabeth Dulaj The person she is speaking with is a pelvic floor physical therapist, not a regular PT. They treat a huge range of issues within the pelvic floor, and a vaginal exam is very often part of their evaluations.
