Hey I have a question regarding the tuning lesson. I do not understand how to read the code, what do the numbers stand for under the letters? So I can set up a tuning without being on one specific one to start with.
The numbers are fret numbers so that you can tune by ear Eg standard style tuning gDGBD Tune your 4th string to your voice and tune the other strings 5435 5 -fifth fret 4th string and 3rd string open sound rhe same note. 4 -forth fret 3rd string and 2nd string open sound the same note 3 -third fret 2nd string and 1st string open sound te same note 5 -fifth fret 1st string and 5th string sound the same note
Tried to tune nylgut 2B (light, that came with banjo) up to A...on fretless...but broke, so I have to figure out a lower range overall...if I want to play in A, is there some other tuning I can use to make an A or C key...It is a 25" scale banjo. Love the sound just have to figure out tunings...
When I go to an OT jam I usually take my fiddle but I"d love to be able to try out banjo there, so the D and A get played a lot as you know...that's why I am looking for a good way to get to something compatible. That's the specific reason for the other question. Thanks for all your info!
There's not a ton of options with nylgut because they break so easily. I usually keep my fretless tuned in dADF#A (same as open G but lower). You might wanna get two banjos and have steel on one and nylgut on the other so you can play in whatever key your buddies are in. I just got a fretless so now i can keep nylgut on it and put steel on my open back.
Clifton, when is the next one like this for Banjo Heritage members? I don’t want to miss it!

I haven’t laughed like that in awhile

gDGBD is A tuning dropped down to G. You can also try fCFAC which is G tuning dropped to F. All three tunings work the same way.
Thank you! @@CliftonHicksbanjo
